Former President George H.W. Bush gently condemned the polarized politics that dominate Washington in a speech Tuesday night in San Antonio.
These aren't pleasant times in Washington, D.C.," Bush said. "It's pretty tough — there's an ugliness there."
At the same time, his son's presidency is under siege, but Bush offered little commentary on George W. Bush's time in the Oval Office.
Relaxed and quick with a joke, Bush, 80, spoke to a nearly packed house in Trinity University's Laurie Auditorium. It was a largely friendly crowd, giving him two standing ovations.
Barbara Bush got her own as she entered the auditorium before the address, a Flora Cameron Lecture on Politics and Public Affairs.
In his 20-minute speech that dealt with life after the presidency, Bush highlighted his work with former President Clinton to drum up relief after the Asian tsunami of late 2004 and after Hurricane Katrina slammed into Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. .........
please take a gander at a posting the lovely and talented vanx at verb-ops did the other day. vanx was witness to speech given by papa (with a VERY inappropriate joke thrown in). it's under the paragraph "who's your daddy" toward the end of the posting.
