Daniel Schorr, veteran CBS and CNN reporter and NPR news analyst, dead at 93

Washington Post Staff Writer

Daniel Schorr, 93, a combative broadcast reporter who over six decades broke major national stories while also provoking presidents, foreign leaders, the KGB, the CIA and his bosses at CBS and CNN, died July 23 at Georgetown University Hospital. The cause of death was not reported.
Mr. Schorr, a senior news analyst with National Public Radio for the past 25 years, was one of a handful of reporters with firsthand knowledge of newsmakers from the 1950s through the 2000s.
Recruited to CBS by the legendary Edward R. Murrow in 1953, he had the first televised interview with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and won three Emmy Awards for his coverage of the Watergate scandal..............

NPR's Scott Simon Remembers Daniel Schorr

-Scott Simon

No other journalist in memory saw as much history as Daniel Schorr.
He was born the year before the Russian Revolution and lived to see the Digital Revolution. He was there before the Berlin Wall went up and there a generation later when it came down. He was born before people had radio in their homes but pioneered the use of radio, television, satellites and then the Web to report the news.
How many people were personal acquaintances of Edward R. Murrow, Nikita Khrushchev, Frank Zappa and Richard Nixon?
For all the history that he reported, Dan Schorr will always be remembered for the moment he stood before live television cameras in 1974 with a breaking bulletin about a list of enemies compiled by the White House.
Schorr began to read the names. One of them was his own. "The note here is, 'A real media enemy,'" he read, before continuing through the list.
"What went through my mind was, 'Don't lose your cool. Be professional,'" he said years later.
Dan became a professional at the age of 12. A woman jumped off the roof of his family's apartment building in the Bronx. While police and fire crews rushed to the scene, Dan called the Bronx Home News — and got paid $5 for the story..............

USDA Flap Shows 'Post-Racial' Future Has Not Arrived
by Alan Greenblatt

The decision to fire Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod — an action Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has now rescinded — is clearly part of a larger debate about discrimination and racial sensitivity in the public sphere.
It's also evidence that hopes so often expressed during the 2008 presidential campaign that Barack Obama would lead the country into a "post-racial" future have thus far gone unrealized. The controversy has brought up complaints about past government discrimination against African-Americans and highlighted a feeling among some whites that the administration is biased against them.
In video posted online, Sherrod is seen recounting her thoughts that a white farmer who came to her for aid in 1986 should go seek help from "his own kind." But the clip initially posted by blogger Andrew Breitbart failed to show the larger context of her remarks, in which Sherrod described how she had overcome such sentiments................

that rePUGnecants and tea party members are in bed together? i think  you'd have to be one stupid mf-er to NOT know this. now the next step is for them to STOP denying they're racists

By Dana Milbank

Rep. Michele Bachmann is the leader of the Tea Party -- literally.
Wednesday morning, with the blessing of House GOP leaders, the Minnesota Republican convened the inaugural meeting of her Tea Party Caucus, where two dozen GOP members of Congress sat down with a similar number of Tea Party activists behind closed doors in an Armed Services Committee room. Then it was Bachmann's job to lead the group across the street to the Capitol for an appearance before TV cameras............

Running for U.S. Senate, Arizona
J.D. Hayworth is a candidate in the Republican primary for the United States Senate in Arizona.
Mr. Hayworth served in the U.S. House of Representatives for twelve years before losing his 2006 bid for reelection in part due to his ethics issues.  While in Congress, Rep. Hayworth drew intense criticism for his extensive ties to Jack Abramoff and for employing his wife to run his political action committee (PAC).  Rep. Hayworth’s ethical issues were documented in CREW’s 2006 report on the most corrupt members of Congress.  After losing his seat, Rep. Hayworth hosted a conservative talk-radio show, but he left that job earlier this year to run for Senate. ...............

(Bump) BP photoshops fake photo of crisis command center, posts on main BP site

UPDATE: 11:14PM Eastern: BP has now posted the "original" photo, they claim. Except - surprise - they are refusing to post the high-resolution version of the new "original" photo. They posted the high-res version of the altered photo earlier, and in fact, that version is still live via a link below the new photo. Why not post the high-res version of the new "original" photo? Afraid someone is going to enlarge it and find out it's fake too?

UPDATE 10:37PM Eastern: The Washington Post has the story now. Oddly, BP is now claiming that the photo is real - but it showed blank screens, and rather than show blank screens at AP's crisis center, they instead put fake content-filled screens in the photo. Uh, a few questions.............................

Refudiate: Sarah Palin's new political language

By Alexandra Petri
Refudiate: (verb) a word Sarah Palin just coined on Twitter.
Meaning: something "peaceful muslims" should "pls" do.
Use in a sentence: "Ground Zero Mosque supporters: doesn’t it stab you in the heart, as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate."
Country of Origin: Unclear, but you can see Russia.
Explanation: "'Refudiate,' 'misunderestimate,' 'wee-wee'd up.' English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!"
Note: As someone who has never, personally, been "wee-wee’d" up but thinks it sounds like a painful process that would be difficult to reverse, I’m overwhelmed by Palin's boldness. Churchill said of Ramsay MacDonald that "He has, more than any other man, the gift of compressing the largest amount of words into the smallest amount of thought." But why even bother with the words? Sarah Palin has broken down the last boundary, and now the sky is her limit. Soon, her speeches will just be things like: "For too long, Americans have wandered in a gormless wabe, mimsy and absturpated. Can’t the U.S. government corribulate this reticulousity?" Well, can we? I'm not sure...............

Police Officer Arrested for On-Duty Sexual Assault and False Imprisonment of Ex-Girlfriend
by Cara

Trigger Warning for graphic descriptions of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and police violence.
In Illinois, a sheriff’s deputy for Lake County has been arrested on charges of attempted sexual assault while armed and false imprisonment while armed, in neighboring Kenosha County. Both crimes are felonies. Jack Johnson (left) allegedly harassed, sexually assaulted, and physically restrained an ex-girlfriend while she was at work. He is currently on administrative leave and in jail with $5,000 bail for his alleged crimes:
According to a criminal complaint, Johnson went into the cell phone store in Twin Lakes about 10:45 a.m. to talk to the clerk, a former girlfriend.
The woman said Johnson had called earlier about a broken cell phone, but when he came into the store he insisted they resume their relationship, despite his marriage and her engagement.
“What’s it matter? It’s just a piece of paper,” Johnson reportedly said.
The woman said Johnson repeatedly asked her to kiss him and promised to leave if she just “gave him what he wanted.”
After suggesting a coin toss to settle the matter..............

mad men starts up again NEXT sunday

i personally love the show. note, the following article contains a spoiler or two (EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN'T HAPPEN TO MENTION THAT PRIOR TO ME READING THE ARTICLE)

Back to Work for ‘Mad Men’

pic:
Frank Ockenfels 3/AMC
The fourth season of “Mad Men” brings major changes for the characters, including those played by, from left, Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, Elisabeth Moss and January Jones.

“WHO is Don Draper?” is the question that opens the premiere of the fourth season of “Mad Men.” And that’s an insider’s joke, a wink at viewers who have spent three years burrowing into the cryptic ad man’s buried secrets and damaged psyche.
AMC’s drama about Manhattan’s advertising world in the early 1960s isn’t just a cult favorite anymore; “Mad Men” has become a cultural phenomenon much in the way “The Sopranos” once was. The two shows are mirror opposites of course.
“The Sopranos” amused viewers with unexpected glimpses of bourgeois ordinariness — lawn mowing, school meetings, psychotherapy — inside the scary, alien world of organized crime. “Mad Men” offers a far more commonplace milieu — the rat race — and finds comedy in the distortions of a rear-view mirror..............

the allegations are baseless, baseless i tell ya!

of course blackwater xe (a pile o' shite by any other name y'all....) is denying even KNOWING about the mistreatment of women (and young grrrls - and i would suspect young boys as well). they are NOT the only contractors in the middle east. (nor are they the only soldiers or government employees).

who suffers the most in war? women and children as always.

this is how it always was and how it MIGHT always be. i am here to do my little tiny part to stop it.

at any rate, these are just allegations and nothing is proven  yet (have to say that even though i KNOW already what's true and what's not and who is guilty and who is not)

U.S. policy a paper tiger against sex trade in war zones

By Nick Schwellenbach and Carol Leonnig

An eight-year-old policy that forbids government contractors and employees to engage in sex trafficking in war zones has proved almost impossible to enforce amid indications that such activities are occurring in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The policy, instituted eight years ago by President George W. Bush and still in effect today, calls for the prosecution of government employees and contractors who engage in trafficking and the suspension or disqualification of companies whose workers do. Bush's get-tough language also threatened criminal prosecutions for solicitation of prostitutes because many of the women are forced into the work...........

.............
The former Blackwater guard also said he provided the information to a grand jury, but the Justice Department would not confirm or deny the existence of an investigation.
Stacy DeLuke, a spokeswoman for Blackwater, now known as Xe Services, said the firm "vehemently denies these anonymous and baseless allegations." She said Xe policies forbid human trafficking..................
