AP Exclusive: Corruption probe stymies US efforts to rebuild Iraq and win hearts and minds

CHELSEA J. CARTER
AP News

U.S.-funded reconstruction in a one-time Sunni insurgent stronghold has been suspended because of a corruption probe, including allegations that the mayor and police chief were involved in a multimillion-dollar oil smuggling ring, The Associated Press has learned.

The problems in Hit, a dusty, ramshackle western town along the Euphrates River, provide a glimpse of the challenges in rebuilding a country where years of war and misrule have destroyed the social fabric.

Reconstruction is a key part of the U.S. military strategy against both Sunni and Shiite extremists, but many projects have long been dogged by mismanagement and allegations of corruption.

The U.S. government suspended its efforts in Hit this month after the police chief, Col. Salah Rasheed al-Gaoud, was fired for his alleged role in the scheme, U.S. and Iraqi officials familiar with the investigation told the AP............

AP News

A news discussion site and The Associated Press have resolved a dispute over an AP demand that the site remove some of the news agency's content.

In a statement Friday, Rogers Cadenhead said he is "glad" the dispute over his site, the Drudge Retort, has ended. He said a larger conflict remains between AP's view of acceptable use of its content and the practices of many bloggers. Cadenhead declined to comment further, referring all questions to his attorney.

An AP statement Thursday night said the company had provided additional information to Cadenhead about posting its material online, and both sides considered the matter closed. It also said the AP was having a "constructive exchange" with a "number of interested parties in the blogging community" about the relationship between bloggers and news providers, and intended to continue the dialogue............

Hasselbeck on Obama: "[H]e seemed for a while more willing to give the fist bump to Ahmadinejad than our own General Petraeus"

On the June 18 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, co-host of ABC's The View, asserted of Sen. Barack Obama: "[I]t bothered me that he seemed for a while more willing to give the fist bump to [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad than our own General [David] Petraeus." Hasselbeck continued: "It bothers me. It bothers me as a mom. It bothers me as a working woman. It bothers me as a citizen of this country."

Hasselbeck's reference to Petraeus is not the first time that someone on Fox News has echoed attacks by conservatives for what they suggest falsely is Obama's refusal to discuss the situation in Iraq with Petraeus. Vets For Freedom chairman Pete Hegseth, on the May 29 edition of Fox News' Your World, falsely claimed that Obama has "never met with General Petraeus," which host Neil Cavuto did not challenge. In fact, Obama has, as recently as April 8, questioned Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker at a Senate Committee on Foreign Relations hearing on Iraq......

Military Told Press and Family It Was 'Friendly Fire' -- But It Was Murder
By Greg Mitchell
NEW YORK For five years now, E&P has been chronicling the disturbing number of “noncombat” deaths in Iraq, often suicides, which usually come to light only due to the diligence of local newspapers. As part of that effort, last August I briefly described yet another case, involving a 20-year-old Texas woman named Kamisha Block, who apparently was much loved in her Vidor hometown. It was said to be death by “friendly fire,” which officially is fairly rare in Iraq, so I kept an eye on it for days, in case of an update. ...........

....
Forget friendly fire. It turns out that Spc. Block was actually murdered, and the killer, another soldier, Staff Sgt. Brandon Norris, then turned the gun on himself. .,

our next president

absolutely

NO comments are necessary EXCEPT this one: is losing 4,101 of our men and women's lives (these are DEATHS only. that figure doesn't include the tens of thousands of men and women who are still alive but whose souls and bodies and minds were ruined in iraq) worth it?

By Brave Nation

It's hard to call someone younger than 18 years old a "legend," but Ava Lowery is just that in progressive circles. She created a website at fourteen where she made videos railing against the war in Iraq. Today, her site, peacetakescourage.com, gets nearly two million hits per month. And she doesn't live in a liberal hotbed like San Francisco or New York, rather in a small town in Alabama. Anthony Romero is the son of Puerto Rican emigrants and grew up to not only be the first in his family to go to college, but to become the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union--the first Latino and openly gay head of the venerable organization, and someone we thought Ava should have on her cell phone speed dial. Just in case. Together they discuss the legal quagmire the country has sunk into since 9/11, among other quagmires created by George W. Bush and his Administration. .........

'Flight Risk' and 'Dangerous' -- But Judge Loosens Bail For CEO"

By Jonathan Dienst

Just days after a convicted CEO faked his own death and fled to avoid prison, a federal judge on Long Island reduced bail conditions for a separate CEO accused of a massive fraud even though prosecutors maintain he is a "flight risk" and "dangerous."Judge Joanna Seybert reduced restrictive bail conditions for David Brooks, who ran DHB Industries -- a company that sold bulletproof vests to the military.Brooks is accused of looting funds and committing securities fraud to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. Prosecutors said he then funneled his ill-gotten gains to accounts overseas. Even though Seybert called Brooks a "danger to the community" because of past threats he allegedly made, she agreed to loosen his home confinement. Her new order allows Brooks to leave his Manhattan home unescorted between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.........

i don't know if this manual actually exists. that part i don't know if it's true or not. HOWEVER, there is no doubt in my heart, mind and soul, we (the we here is the united states secret deep in the bowels of the earth government) support this sort of thing. governments we think will be good for us even if they're murderous insane dictators (take libya for ONE example)

How to train death squads and quash revolutions from San Salvador to Iraq

How to covertly train paramilitaries, censor the press, ban unions, employ terrorists, conduct warrantless searches, suspend habeas corpus, conceal breaches of the Geneva Convention and make the population love it

JULIAN ASSANGE (investigative editor)
Monday June 15, 2008

Wikileaks has released a sensitive 219 page US military counterinsurgency manual. The manual, Foreign Internal Defense Tactics Techniques and Procedures for Special Forces (1994, 2004), may be critically described as "what we learned about running death squads and propping up corrupt government in Latin America and how to apply it to other places". Its contents are both history defining for Latin America and, given the continued role of US Special Forces in the suppression of insurgencies, including in Iraq and Afghanistan, history making.

The leaked manual, which has been verified with military sources, is the official US Special Forces doctrine for Foreign Internal Defense or FID.

FID operations are designed to prop up "friendly" governments facing popular revolution or guerilla insurgency. FID interventions are often covert or quasi-covert due to the unpopular nature of the governments being supported ("In formulating a realistic policy for the use of advisors, the commander must carefully gauge the psychological climate of the HN [Host Nation] and the United States.")

The manual directly advocates training paramilitaries, pervasive surveillance, censorship, press control and restrictions on labor unions & political parties. It directly advocates warrantless searches, detainment without charge and (under varying circumstances) the suspension of habeas corpus. It directly advocates employing terrorists or prosecuting individuals for terrorism who are not terrorists, running false flag operations and concealing human rights abuses from journalists. And it repeatedly advocates the use of subterfuge and "psychological operations" (propaganda) to make these and other "population & resource control" measures more palatable.

The content has been particularly informed by the long United States involvement in El Salvador........

i downloaded it yesterday (v3)

i was late to the firefox party. i have only been using it for about 6 or 7 months. it took me a little while to adjust to the tabs for multiple sites, but now i love it. unfortunately though, i can't use it at work. i'd love to use it there as well.

Building a Better Browser: Firefox Keeps Innovating

By Rob Pegoraro

Mozilla Firefox, the little Web browser with the quirky name, has grown up fast. Four years ago, Firefox was an obscure project Microsoft felt free to ignore. Now it has grabbed about a fifth of the market worldwide.

And while Microsoft has shipped only one upgrade to its Internet Explorer in that time, Firefox just hit its fourth major release.

Like the earlier 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 versions, Firefox 3 -- a free download for Windows 2000, XP and Vista; Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5; and recent Linux releases at http://mozilla.com-- makes the Web easier and safer to use in a few distinct ways.

Its tabbed browsing lets you switch among multiple sites in one window, and a small box at the top right of every window lets you direct a query to your choice of Web search engines. "Find as you type" text searching jumps to a given word on a page in moments. Its separation from the guts of Windows makes it safer and more reliable than Internet Explorer. And Firefox's open-source code allows inspection by anybody, making for fast bug fixes.....

women in sports

i don't know how i came across dave zirin's edge of sports but i did. i was absolutely blown away by his posting excerpted and linked below. it's how i feel and it's what i knew deep down in my core. a couple of weeks ago, i heard danica being interviewed (as usual it was on the radio either on my way to work or coming home from work). i couldn't listen too long because they were concentrating on her body. she was gushing about what a 'grrrl' she was. how feminine she was and THAT is why she poses in leather draped over cars or in bikinis for men's magazines. i have NOTHING against seeing someone's body (male OR female). nothing against seeing an athlete's body. as a matter of fact, i was at the half door for brunch last weekend and track and field was on. i was telling my friend matt how beautiful i thought the bodies of the athletes (runners in particular. i like divers bodies too, but of course there were no divers in the track and field competition) were.

hey danica, no one is gonna think you're a lesbian if you don't pose in a bikini. and by the way, so the fuck what if they do

The Over-Exposure of Danica Patrick

By Dave Zirin

It has been quite a year for Danica Patrick. She became the first woman to win an Indy Car race, coming in first at the Indy Japan 300 on April 20. She also became the first race care driver to pose for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

The good people at SI never thought to give us Richard Petty in a speedo, but Danica, bent over in a white ruffle bikini, must for some reason have seemed like a winner. In accomplishing this dubious double play, Patrick has revived a debate as old as Sonia Henie skating figure eights at the 1926 Olympics: Does sex sell—or perhaps more aptly phrased, does sexism sell—women’s sports? Does objectifying women athletes, highlighting their bodies over their skill, putting them in swimsuits or on the covers of yuppie porn like FHM or Stuff, actually increase the interest and fanbase of women’s sports? The debate has always had Faustian overtones: Is it worth turning proud women athletes into frat house cheesecake if it’s for the greater good, the greater exposure, of the games themselves?..............

just so you know

i'm having some memory issues (yeah, with my mind AND my laptop). i thought i could fix it by getting an external hard drive. it DID help with the pictures (my new camera has a higher megapixel count than my old one. i had NO idea the pictures reflected this by taking up more space). my body AND my laptop are running very slowly these days. i then purchased a registry cleaner since it seemed this sort of thing was more than likely to help speed up the laptop (my body is my problem i guess). the registry cleaner did help but not enough. so if you see funny postings, or no titles or odd bits here and there, that's the reason why

so now i have a choice
1) buy more memory
2) buy a new laptop

Italian man accused of kidnapping ex-girlfriend to get ironing, dishes done

ROME - An Italian man was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend from a pub, taking her home and forcing her to iron his clothes and wash the dishes, police said Monday.

The 43-year-old man dragged the woman out of a pub in the port city of Genoa, shoved her into a car and took her to his home, where he made her iron and wash dishes after threatening her, they said.

Police arrived at his house after being tipped off by a friend of the woman who watched the scene at the pub...

McCain’s ‘100 years’ comment focus of new MoveOn, AFSCME ad

By Nick Juliano
John McCain’s observation that he wouldn’t mind keeping US troops in Iraq for 100 years is the focus of another new advertisement from liberal interests.

The anti-war group MoveOn.org is teaming up with a prominent labor union to run a new television spot in three swing states for the next week. The ad features a young mother worried that McCain’s prolonged commitment to Iraq would suck a new generation of Americans into the war. “Hi John McCain,” the woman says, holding her infant son on her knee. “This is Alex. And he’s my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can’t have him.”............

CIA Played Larger Role In Advising Pentagon
Harsh Interrogation Methods Defended

By Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writer

A senior CIA lawyer advised Pentagon officials about the use of harsh interrogation techniques on detainees at Guantanamo Bay in a meeting in late 2002, defending waterboarding and other methods as permissible despite U.S. and international laws banning torture, according to documents released yesterday by congressional investigators.

Torture "is basically subject to perception," CIA counterterrorism lawyer Jonathan Fredman told a group of military and intelligence officials gathered at the U.S.-run detention camp in Cuba on Oct. 2, 2002, according to minutes of the meeting. "If the detainee dies, you're doing it wrong."

The document, one of two dozen released by a Senate panel investigating how Pentagon officials developed the controversial interrogation program introduced at Guantanamo Bay in late 2002, suggests a larger CIA role in advising Defense Department interrogators than was previously known. By the time of the meeting, the CIA already had used waterboarding, which simulates drowning, on at least one terrorism suspect and was holding high-level al-Qaeda detainees in secret prisons overseas -- actions that Bush administration lawyers had approved.

The new evidence, along with hours of questioning of former Pentagon officials at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday, shed light on efforts by top aides to then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to research and reverse-engineer techniques used by military survival schools to prepare U.S. service members for possible capture by hostile forces. ..........

Army Overseer Tells of Ouster Over KBR Stir

By JAMES RISEN
WASHINGTON — The Army official who managed the Pentagon’s largest contract in Iraq says he was ousted from his job when he refused to approve paying more than $1 billion in questionable charges to KBR, the Houston-based company that has provided food, housing and other services to American troops.

The official, Charles M. Smith, was the senior civilian overseeing the multibillion-dollar contract with KBR during the first two years of the war. Speaking out for the first time, Mr. Smith said that he was forced from his job in 2004 after informing KBR officials that the Army would impose escalating financial penalties if they failed to improve their chaotic Iraqi operations.

Army auditors had determined that KBR lacked credible data or records for more than $1 billion in spending, so Mr. Smith refused to sign off on the payments to the company. “They had a gigantic amount of costs they couldn’t justify,” he said in an interview. “Ultimately, the money that was going to KBR was money being taken away from the troops, and I wasn’t going to do that.”............

Radio host Heidi Harris on Hardball: Women vote for Dems because they "tend to think with their hearts and not with their minds"

On the June 16 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, when host Chris Matthews asked why "most women vote Democrat," radio host Heidi Harris responded, "Most women? I don't know. I think women -- sadly, a lot of women are very emotional, and they tend to think with their hearts and not with their minds about some of these issues. They tend to feel more of these kind of things than think it through." She added, "I hate to say it, but it's true."
In response to Harris' comments, Matthews asked, "You mean it's not hard issues like abortion rights, or Social Security, or minimum wage? Logical reasons?" Harris replied: "You know what it is? I don't think, Chris, that most women under 50 care about abortion rights, and here's why. Because women at that age have -- Roe v. Wade was passed in '73, as you know. So all the women growing up -- my generation, the women 10, 15 years younger than I am, it's always been legal. I don't think that 30-year-old women have any concept of what it's like not to have that right."...........

The Greatest Story Never Told
Finally, the U.S. Mega-Bases in Iraq Make the News

by Tom Engelhardt

It’s just a $5,812,353 contract — chump change for the Pentagon — and not even one of those notorious “no-bid” contracts either. Ninety-eight bids were solicited by the Army Corps of Engineers and 12 were received before the contract was awarded this May 28th to Wintara, Inc. of Fort Washington, Maryland, for “replacement facilities for Forward Operating Base Speicher, Iraq.” According to a Department of Defense press release, the work on those “facilities” to be replaced at the base near Saddam Hussein’s hometown, Tikrit, is expected to be completed by January 31, 2009, a mere 11 days after a new president enters the Oval Office. It is but one modest reminder that, when the next administration hits Washington, American bases in Iraq, large and small, will still be undergoing the sort of repair and upgrading that has been ongoing for years.

In fact, in the last five-plus years, untold billions of taxpayer dollars have been spent on the construction and upgrading of those bases. When asked back in the fall of 2003, only months after Baghdad fell to U.S. troops, Lt. Col. David Holt, the Army engineer then “tasked with facilities development” in Iraq, proudly indicated that “several billion dollars” had already been invested in those fast-rising bases. Even then, he was suitably amazed, commenting that “the numbers are staggering.” Imagine what he might have said, barely two and a half years later, when the U.S. reportedly had 106 bases, mega to micro, all across the country.

By now, billions have evidently gone into single massive mega-bases like the U.S. air base at Balad, about 60 miles north of Baghdad. It’s a “16-square-mile fortress,” housing perhaps 40,000 U.S. troops, contractors, special ops types, and Defense Department employees. As the Washington Post’s Tom Ricks, who visited Balad back in 2006, pointed out — in a rare piece on one of our mega-bases — it’s essentially “a small American town smack in the middle of the most hostile part of Iraq.” Back then, air traffic at the base was already being compared to Chicago’s O’Hare International or London’s Heathrow — and keep in mind that Balad has been steadily upgraded ever since to support an “air surge” that, unlike the President’s 2007 “surge” of 30,000 ground troops, has yet to end..........

China dissident commits suicide after forcible deportation

The suicide of a man who was forcibly returned to China by Australian immigration authorities has prompted calls by refugee advocates for better treatment of people seeking protection visas.

The man, known as Mr Zhang, was beaten and tortured when he was deported to China a year ago.

He spent almost a decade arguing his case for asylum, repeatedly telling Australian authorities he was at risk because of his involvement with pro-democracy groups in China.

His last two years were spent in Sydney's Villawood immigration detention centre.

But immigration advocates say that after being denied asylum on numerous occasions, in the end he lost hope and committed suicide.

When he spoke to the ABC's AM program just over a year ago Mr Zhang described how he was beaten up and tortured by Chinese police after being deported from Australia.

"And the two PSB (Public Safety Bureau) police men, they pushed me down on the ground, One PSB stamped on me and one, my hand, was broken, the left hand my middle finger," Mr Zhang said at the time through an interpreter.

Refugee advocate Frances Milne worked on Mr Zhang's case and kept in touch with him after he was deported........

this isn't really news

we know about it. we've known about it awhile. we either ignore it or deny it. we don't care. it's not US it's happening to. yet let someone else do it to our sons and daughters and mothers and fathers and sisters and brothers. we're up in arms.

what WOULD be news is if someone was made accountable for these crimes. they ARE crimes.

Report Questions Pentagon Accounts

Officials Looked Into Interrogation Methods Early On

Washington Post Staff Writer

A Senate investigation has concluded that top Pentagon officials began assembling lists of harsh interrogation techniques in the summer of 2002 for use on detainees at Guantanamo Bay and that those officials later cited memos from field commanders to suggest that the proposals originated far down the chain of command, according to congressional sources briefed on the findings.

The sources said that memos and other evidence obtained during the inquiry show that officials in the office of then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld started to research the use of waterboarding, stress positions, sensory deprivation and other practices in July 2002, months before memos from commanders at the detention facility in Cuba requested permission to use those measures on suspected terrorists.

The reported evidence -- some of which is expected to be made public at a Senate hearing today -- also shows that military lawyers raised strong concerns about the legality of the practices as early as November 2002, a month before Rumsfeld approved them. .........

Bush is MIA, again...

Nearly three years ago as people were drowning in NOLA, the so-called leader of this nation dashed eagerly from one side of the country to another -fund-raising for his party- without a moment's care for his fellow Americans in their time of crisis. In fact, whenever a national crisis has occurred, Bush has been conspicuously absent. During the fourth or fifth day of the Katrina massacre and the missing leadership of this nation, I wrote the following:

We have no leadership, no captain at the helm as it were. We are, in effect, being led from disaster to disaster by a headless horseman run amok with stuffed pockets and an empty conscience.

We are here, again. This time in Iowa, where tens of thousands of Americans are without a home, many dead, many injured and once again, during this national crisis Bush is busy playing voodoo politics (This time in Europe).

Here is what is happening in Iowa:
More national guard troops deploy into disaster territory
Iowa in a drinking water emergency
Culver City, 36,000 homeless
Des Moines is mostly underwater
Death toll as of today at 20 (from what they have been able to determine in the chaos)
83 Iowa Counties declared disaster zones

Kurtz: Town hall meeting was ‘Fox infomercial for John McCain’

By David Edwards and Nick Langewis

“I think Americans are tired,” Senator John McCain said at a Thursday town hall meeting. “They’re tired of the spin rooms, they’re tired of the soundbites, they’re tired of taking people’s comments out of context.”

The meeting’s audience was comprised entirely of Senator McCain’s supporters, and the broadcasting rights were granted exclusively to Fox News, who also relinquished editorial control of the broadcast.

“That was like a Fox infomercial for McCain,” said CNN’s Howard Kurtz. “Don’t you usually have to buy TV time to get that exposure?”

“It was a sweetheart deal for the McCain campaign,” said TIME Magazine’s Karen Tumulty. “There’s just no way around it.”...........

the term 'PRO LIFE' that pisses me off. most of 'these people' (and yes, normally i hate that term, THESE PEOPLE - hate hate hate it, USUALLY), don't give a f**k about a fetus once it's born. they're pro-life up to the point of birth and then, POOF, WHO GIVES A FLYING YOOHOO. i have no figures to back me up except my own experiences. just ask THESE PEOPLE if they believe in capital punishment. just ask 'em. i'll bet close to 9 out of 10 (if not 10 out of 10) will say YEAH, FRY ''EM. what kind of 'PRO LIFE' attitude is that i ask you?

so let's say someone made a HORRIBLE mistake when they were younger and picked up some king of std. let's say herpes. let's say they've seen the light and changed their ways. they've settled down and gotten married. let's say in order to protect their partner (SPOUSE of course because as i've said, they've changed their ways) they wish to use condoms. well THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO GET CONDOMS (at the very least) at dmc pharmacy. pro-life my big fat ass

'Pro-Life' Drugstores Market Beliefs

No Contraceptives For Chantilly Shop

Washington Post Staff Writer

When DMC Pharmacy opens this summer on Route 50 in Chantilly, the shelves will be stocked with allergy remedies, pain relievers, antiseptic ointments and almost everything else sold in any drugstore. But anyone who wants condoms, birth control pills or the Plan B emergency contraceptive will be turned away.

That's because the drugstore, located in a typical shopping plaza featuring a Ruby Tuesday, a Papa John's and a Kmart, will be a "pro-life pharmacy" -- meaning, among other things, that it will eschew all contraceptives.

The pharmacy is one of a small but growing number of drugstores around the country that have become the latest front in a conflict pitting patients' rights against those of health-care workers who assert a "right of conscience" to refuse to provide care or products that they find objectionable...........

oh and by the way, which gender do you think gets hurt by this lunacy more?

Bush renews attempt to capture Osama bin Laden
Andrew McLemore
In a last ditch effort to capture Osama bin Laden before leaving office, President Bush has enlisted the help of British special forces, the Times Online reported Saturday.

The article cited “defense and intelligence sources in London and Washington” as having confirmed the information.
“If he [Bush] can say he has killed Saddam Hussein and captured bin Laden, he can claim to have left the world a safer place,” said a US intelligence source.

Britain’s Special Boat Service and Special Reconnaissance Regiment have been taking part in US operations to capture bin Laden in northern Pakistan, the Times Online reported.

But the little reliable information about bin Laden means locating him would be, at best, difficult, according to an NBC analysis released Friday.

“We don’t have a clue where he is or even may be,” a Western military analyst said in the article. “We have had NO credible intelligence on OBL since 2001. All the rest is rumor and rubbish either whipped up by the media or churned out in the power corridors of western capitals.”..........

let's make sure

he effs up EVERYTHING he can possibly eff up prior to his leaving. he's doing THE best job of that i have ever seen! (so he IS good at something)

Bush gives OK for oil companies to harm polar bears
Andrew McLemore
Last month, the Bush administration declared polar bears a threatened species because of global warming.

This month, the administration gave permission for companies to “annoy and potentially harm them in the pursuit of oil and natural gas,” the Associated Press reported Saturday.

The article reported the Fish and Wildlife Service as having already issued regulations for legal protection of seven oil companies with a provision that only “small numbers” of polar bears and Pacific walruses be harmed in the process.

“The oil and gas industry in operating under the kind of rules they have operated under for 15 years has not been a threat to the species,” H. Dale Hall, the Fish and Wildlife Service’s director, told The Associated Press on Friday. “It was the ice melting and the habitat going away that was a threat to the species over everything else.”......
