Time Traveler Caught in Museum Photo?
“Reopening of the South Fork Bridge after flood in Nov. 1940. 1941 (?)”
It’s the short description for the photograph shown at the virtual Bralorne Pioneer Museum, from British Columbia, Canada. The image can be seen specifically on this page (scroll down to the middle), among other items of the online exhibit. Did you notice anything out of place? Or perhaps, out of time?
The man with what appears to be very modern sunglasses seems to be wearing a stamped T-shirt with a nice sweater, all the while holding a portable compact camera!..............

Wajeha Al Huwaider, a woman, driving in Saudi Arabia
Lisa KatayamaThis incredible video from 2008 shows Saudi activist Wajeha Al Huwaider driving a car in Saudi Arabia on International Women's Day. Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive; by shooting footage of herself driving and then posting it on YouTube, she was able to send a message out to the world while also protecting herself from punishment through international exposure...........

To Oliver North, I have three words for you: Iran Contra Affair
Posted by Larisa AlexandrovnaSo right after Sean Hannity was yanked from the Cincinnati tea-bagger rally by angry Fox News executives, he hosted a show on which guest Oliver North had this to say about the POTUS:
In discussing the current tension between the Obama administration and the Israeli government (of which Hannity does not approve), Hannity pitched Lt. Col. North a standard, almost rhetorical question on his program: “Is President Obama emboldening America’s enemies?” North responded with a scathing critique of President Obama’s foreign policy:
Okay, let me see if I understand this. North committed treason by selling weapons to Iran, our then (and now) designated enemy. Oh, and Israel shares that enemy in common with us by the way. North used the profits from these illegal arms sales to fund terrorism in Central America. This money funded a rag-tag collection of terrorists known as the Contras, who in turn used the money to wage an illegal proxy war against the democratically elected government of Nicaragua. .........“This president is willing to be obsequious to our adversaries, to denigrate our allies, and essentially to walk away from the only real democracy in that part of the world. And no one can say he’s big on oil, because he’s not in the oil business, so what is it? It is his core philosophy of being anti-American.”

Right-Wing March Organizer Doesn’t Repudiate Racist Cartoon
Posted by Adele Stan
At yesterday’s rally by sponsored by the Virginia chapter of the Constitutional Sovereignty Alliance on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, I asked organizer David A. Turner, Jr., about a disturbing cartoon I found on the Web site of one of the three links to the sites of “Partners & Friends” listed on the “links” page of the CSA site. Turner was fresh from a meeting with House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, to whom Turner delivered the “Virginia Sovereignty Letter” signed by members of the commonwealth’s state legislature.
As I reported yesterday, on the site of Freedom for US Now — one of CSA’s three “Partners & Friends” — trumpeted as “New!” on the front page was a post called “The Raping of America” that features a bare-chested Barack Obama donning his shirt, leaving behind in a disheveled bed a naked and distraught Statue of Liberty.............

Mexico bishop says porn, tv to blame for priest abuse
Reuters) - A prominent Roman Catholic bishop in Mexico blamed eroticism on television and Internet pornography for child abuse by priests, in the latest incendiary comments on sex scandals in the church.
"With so much invasion of eroticism, sometimes it's not easy to stay celibate or to respect children," Bishop Felipe Arizmendi said during an annual meeting of Mexican bishops near Mexico City on Thursday.
"If on television and on the Internet and in so many media outlets there is pornography, it is very difficult to stay pure and chaste," said Arizmendi, an influential bishop from the colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas in southern Mexico.

Wall Street-backed senator can’t explain why he opposes financial reform, asks reporter what’s wrong with it
By John Byrne
Ted Kennedy's replacement in the Senate doesn't appear to be quite as articulate as his predecessor.
Newly minted Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA), elected to the late Kennedy's seat in a special election, stumbled after reporters asked him why he opposed financial reform. The new legislation will take a financial toll on the nation's largest banking institutions in an effort to forestall future financial meltdowns.
Asked by the Boston Globe how he'd like to see the bill improved, Brown fumbled -- appearing not even to know what it was he wanted changed in order to garner his support.
Brown left open the possibility that he could support a compromise.
"I want to see when it's going to come up, how it's going to come up,'' he said. "I'm always open to trying to work something through so it is truly bipartisan.''..............
...............ThinkProgress, the blog of the progressive thinktank Center for American Progress, noted that their analysis found that Brown received $200,000 in campaign donations from Wall Street and business executives. $106,000 came from Wall Street executives alone.................

U.S. Indicts 5 Blackwater Ex-Officials
By JAMES RISEN and MARK MAZZETTI
WASHINGTON — Federal prosecutors charged the former president of Blackwater Worldwide and four other former senior company officials on Friday with weapons violations and making false statements in the first criminal inquiry to reach into the top management ranks of the private security company.
The executives were some of the closest advisers to Blackwater’s founder, Erik Prince, and helped him steer the company during its swift rise to become the leading contractor providing security for American diplomats in Iraq and Afghanistan, working for the State Department, the C.I.A. and the Pentagon.
They were also the senior executives in charge during the company’s most turbulent period, after its security guards were involved in a series of shootings, including one in Baghdad in 2007 that left 17 Iraqi civilians dead.
Mr. Prince, who was not charged, remains at the helm of the company, now known as Xe Services, while many other executives have left as the company has sought to reshape its public image in the face of mounting legal and political scrutiny.........

HATE MAIL FROM THIRD GRADERS
"It's not easy being a public enemy," writes Neil deGrasse Tyson in his book The Pluto Files. When Neil's museum grouped Pluto not among the planets but rather with icy comets in an obscure region called the Kuiper Belt, he heard from thousands of outraged Pluto defenders. It's tough being called a heartless Pluto-hater, particularly by a dismayed eight-year-old. Below, peruse a few of the letters elementary schoolkids sent Neil, and see how their tone shifted over the years, as the public slowly came to accept Pluto's fall from planethood.—Susan K. Lewis
Madeline's protest
September 19, 2006
The debate over Pluto's status continued to percolate, but in August 2006 the International Astronomical Union took a key vote that officially knocked Pluto out of the pantheon of planets. Young Madeline Trost of Plantation, Florida disagreed.

White House complains about CBS News blog post saying that possible Supreme Court nominee is gay
The White House ripped CBS News on Thursday for publishing an online column by a blogger who made assertions about the sexual orientation of Solicitor General Elena Kagan, widely viewed as a leading candidate for the Supreme Court.
Ben Domenech, a former Bush administration aide and Republican Senate staffer, wrote that President Obama would "please" much of his base by picking the "first openly gay justice." Obama extends hospital visitation rights to same-sex partners of gays
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, April 16, 2010
President Obama mandated Thursday that nearly all hospitals extend visitation rights to the partners of gay men and lesbians and respect patients' choices about who may make critical health-care decisions for them, perhaps the most significant step so far in his efforts to expand the rights of gay Americans.
The president directed the Department of Health and Human Services to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation in a memo that was e-mailed to reporters Thursday night while he was at a fundraiser in Miami.
Administration officials and gay activists, who have been quietly working together on the issue, said the new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding, a move that covers the vast majority of the nation's health-care institutions. Obama's order will start a rule-making process at HHS that could take several months, officials said.........

Ask the card-carrying socialists: Is Obama one of them?
By John Blake, CNN
Billy Wharton should be happy.
"Socialized health care" is on its way. The "socialist agenda" is taking over America. And best of all, Barack Obama, a "committed socialist ideologue," is in the Oval Office.
But Wharton, co-chair of the Socialist Party USA, sees no reason to celebrate. He's seen people with bumper stickers and placards that call Obama a socialist, and he has a message for them: Obama isn't a socialist. He's not even a liberal.
"We didn't see a great victory with the election of Barack Obama," Wharton says, " and we certainly didn't see our agenda move from the streets to the White House.".......

VA GOP Attorney General To Share Stage With "Gay Demon" Exorcist
Bruce Wilson
As noted last night on the Rachel Maddow Show, Virginia GOP Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and evangelist Cindy Jacobs will be appearing (and, it would seem, sharing a stage together) at the Freedom Federation anti-health care reform Awakening 2010 conference, scheduled to be held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia this April 15th and 16th. Noting Cuccinelli's plan to attend the conference Maddow observed, "A lot of conservative politicians admit they want to repeal health reform, but it takes a brave new Virginia style conservative politician to say they want to repeal health reform while appearing at an event with a faith healer -- repeal and replace indeed." People For The American Way's Kyle Mantyla has posted footage of Cindy Jacobs' attempts at faith healing of HIV and cancer during a March 2010 conference in Dallas but Jacobs is not just a faith healer. As shown in video footage from the 18th International Transformation Network Institute on Nation Transformation conference, held October 2008 in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Cindy Jacobs claims the power to cast out gay demons. During an October 7, 2008 evening ceremony at the conference Jacobs conducted a mass exorcism, casting out not only "spirits" of homosexuality but also spirits of pornography, addiction, lust, bisexuality, and perversion. [below: exorcism of "homosexual spirits" begins 40 seconds into video]....................

I've noticed this thing about Mike Huckabee and the way that people perceive him. Maybe this is just me, and if it is please comment and tell me I'm wrong because I'll feel better, but it seems to me like a lot of people have this 'he's not so bad' attitude about him. Like, he's always cracking goofy jokes, he's Chuck Norris approved, he has a TV show where he interviews E list celebrities and plays the guitar, he takes embarrassing matching outfits photos with his family. He's funny and dorky and harmless, that Mike Huckabee. So in a twisted way, I'm almost glad when he comes out and says stuff like this:
Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher, remains in favor of keeping in place ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,’ the policy that requires the military to expel openly gay service members. “I wouldn’t support a repeal if I were commander-in-chief,” he said. “You don’t see foot soldiers out there demanding it. I’m not sure that’s the most important thing we ought to be doing for the military.”.............

Rick Sanchez Slams Tea Partier Who Blamed His Racism On The Bee Gees
by Frances Martel
Rick Sanchez was outraged on his afternoon program today. I know what you’re thinking, but this time he had a legitimate reason– and delivered one of the most graceful take-downs of an unabashed racist since the head of the Sons of Confederate Veterans debated Roland Martin.
The racist in question is, unfortunately for conservatives, the head of the Springboro, Ohio Tea Party movement. His name is Sonny Thomas, and he would like all his Twitter followers to know that he is not comfortable with the amount of Latin Americans surrounding him lately. He tweeted: “Illegals everywhere today! So many sp— make me feel like a speck. Grrr. Where’s my gun?!”...........

Arizona Passes Anti-Illegal Immigrant Bill Requiring Police Checks
By Frank James
Arizona's legislature passed one of the toughest anti-illegal immigrant bills in the nation Tuesday that would require law enforcement officers in the state to request immigration documents during police stops.
The controversial bill, which passed the state's Senate Tuesday after being approved earlier by its House, would cement Arizona's reputation for having perhaps the nation's strictest approach to illegal immigration.
The legislation would also bar any city in the state from declaring itself a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.............

Susannah Breslin: Certifiable Asshole
Posted by Vanessa
Susannah Breslin, the writer who called feminism "cultural roadkill" has now taken it upon herself to mock the shit out of a very serious term: trigger warnings. You know, because it's so uncool and passe to care about rape victims.
Her post on True/Slant today begins by calling us folks at Feministing self-victimizing, angry man-haters (*yawn*), setting the tone for this oh-so-expert account of contemporary feminism. What follows is joking banter about Feministing and other blogs' use of trigger warnings with seemingly no knowledge of what they're actually for:
I've noticed as of late a new addition to their bloggy style, which is the inclusion of the phrase, often IN ALL CAPS or TOTALLY BOLDED, which announces incoming SCARY content with a "TRIGGER WARNING." WTF is a "trigger warning"? Yeah, I had to look that one up myself. Thankfully: Google.According to Yahoo! Answers (which, BTW, is a great place to turn if you're worried that having sex while pregnant could result in a pregnant fetus), a trigger warning is: "A warning placed in the title of an e-mail or post to let possible readers know that the content might trigger (or upset) them." This seems different than the more widely used "spoiler alert," which is used if you've seen a movie that other fanbois haven't, and you want to reveal the ending, but you don't want all your fanbois to freak the fuck out.................

Dumped documents: Sarah Palin demanded bendable straws, Learjet for Cal State speech
By Steven Harmon
Contra Costa Times
SACRAMENTO "” From bendable straws to a Learjet, the list of Sarah Palin"s demands for her speaking engagement at Cal State Stanislaus is a striking portrait of the rock star perks and comforts a celebrity speaker can command.
But it was how some details of Palin"s contract with the Cal State Stanislaus Foundation came to light that had Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, outraged Tuesday. A pair of Cal State Stanislaus students said they recovered from a Dumpster parts of the very contract that Yee had sought in a public records request, along with bags of other shredded documents.
"When we have individuals that are deceiving people and obfuscating, we are in deep trouble "” our democracy is in trouble," said Yee, the author of a bill, SB330, that would require public university foundations to be subject to the same scrutiny as schools. "It is truly shocking and a gross violation of the public trust that such documents would be thrown away and destroyed during a pending investigation."...........

Priest calls for pope's resignation
From Adam Reiss, CNNEast Longmeadow, Massachusetts (CNN) -- The phones are ringing off the hook at the parish of St. Michael's Church, where the Rev. James Scahill called in a sermon last weekend for the pope to resign over the church's sexual abuse scandal.
Pope Benedict XVI has found himself tied to the crisis after news broke last month that 30 years ago, when he was an archbishop, he approved accommodations in his diocese for a priest accused of child sex abuse so the priest could undergo therapy.
The priest, who was not identified, was let go from church service in 2008, according to church officials in Germany..............

Bishop 'blames Jews' for criticism of Catholic church record on abuse
Tom Kington, Rome
A furious transatlantic row has erupted over quotes that were attributed to a retired Italian bishop, which suggested that Jews were behind the current criticism of the Catholic church's record on tackling clerical sex abuse.
A website quoted Giacomo Babini, the emeritus bishop of Grosseto, as saying he believed a "Zionist attack" was behind the criticism, considering how "powerful and refined" the criticism is.
The comments, which have been denied by the bishop, follow a series of statements from Catholic churchmen alleging the existence of plots to weaken the church and Pope Benedict XVI.
Allegedly speaking to the Catholic website Pontifex, Babini, 81, was quoted as saying: "They do not want the church, they are its natural enemies. Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God killers."
The interview was spotted on Friday by the American Jewish Committee, which said Babini was using "slanderous stereotypes, which sadly evoke the worst Christian and Nazi propaganda prior to world war two".
On its website, the American Jewish Group Committee quoted bishop Vincenzo Paglia, an official at the Italian Bishops' Conference, as saying Babini's remarks were "entirely contrary to the official line and mainstream thought of the Catholic church"............

NY Tea Party gov. candidate sent videos of bestiality, pics of Obama as pimp

The Tea Party-backed Republican candidate for governor of New York State sent dozens of sexually explicit and racially insensitive mass emails as a matter of course in recent years, including one featuring bestiality and another that was made popular by a neo-Nazi organization.
An online news source in western New York has uncovered dozens of emails from Carl Paladino, a Buffalo-area land developer who threw his hat into the ring for governor last week.
Among the emails Paladino forwarded to numerous people was one of a photo of President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama dressed in pimp and prostitute outfits. The email subject line read "White House Ball."
Another email featured an embedded clip of a hard-core bestiality video featuring a woman and a horse; yet another email was entitled "Miss France 2008 f**king.".............

Palin: America does not need ‘this snake oil science stuff’
By Stephen C. Webster
Up yours, scientists.
That's essentially the message sent by former politician Sarah Palin during a recent speech to the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, where she disparaged the work of thousands of the world's top minds to the delight of a large crowd that laughed, clapped and cheered her on the whole way.
She was addressing the increasingly urgent matter of global climate change when Palin whipped out a gem of a quote, telling the conference-goers that American does not need "this snake oil science stuff" and calling climate science "Gore-gate."..........
