"My Name Used to Be #200343"

By David Phinney, IPS News. Posted April 7, 2007.
An American former Navy soldier and private contractor imprisoned and tortured in Iraq by the U.S. military and falsely accused of "aiding terrorists" warns that our worst fears about Iraq have come true.

A year ago, Donald Vance learned what its like to be falsely accused by the U.S. military of aiding terrorists. He was held without charge for more than three months in a high-security prison in Iraq, and interrogated daily after sleepless nights without legal counsel or even a phone call to his family.
On Wednesday, the former private security contractor was honored for his ordeal in Washington and for speaking out against the incident. At a luncheon at the National Press Club, Vance received the Ridenhour Prize for Truth-Telling, an award named in memory of Army helicopter gunner Ron Ridenhour who struggled to bring the horrific mass murders at My Lai to the attention of Congress and the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. ................

...............It was not the way the tall 29-year-old with an easy charm and keen mind had expected to be treated. Vance claims that during the months leading up to his arrest, he worked as an unpaid informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Sometimes twice a day, he would share information with an agent in Chicago about the Iraqi-owned Shield Group Security, whose principals and managers appeared to be involved in weapons deals and violence against Iraqi civilians. One company employee regularly bartered alcohol with U.S. military personnel in exchange for ammunition they delivered, Vance said. .............

wow now THIS is getting REALLY good!

they (gonzo gonzales and buds) claimed former us attorney david iglesias was an 'absentee landlord' spending TOO MUCH TIME AWAY FROM HIS JOB

guess WHY former us attorney david iglesias was away from his job? HE WAS DOING HIS DUTY AS AN OFFICER IN THE NAVEL RESERVE

this brings me GREAT delight (NOT the part where he was acutally fired of course. i'm sure former us attorney iglesias suffered when he was fired). MORE evidence (NOT that it will make ONE bit of difference. the amercian people seem to be letting ALL of this slide by. they are NOT demanding their congress people start impeachment proceedings against this INSANE administration..........anyway, i rant too much. here's the article

Docked for Duty?"

The Justice Department called David Iglesias, the U.S. attorney in New Mexico, an 'absentee landlord'—a key reason listed for his firing last December. Just one problem: Iglesias, a captain in the Navy Reserve, was off teaching classes as part of the war on terror. Now Iglesias is striking back, arguing he was improperly dismissed.

By Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball
Newsweek

April 4, 2007 - When he wasn’t doing his day job as U.S. attorney in New Mexico, David Iglesias was a captain in the Navy Reserve, teaching foreign military officers about international terrorism
But Iglesias’s military service in support of what the Pentagon likes to call the Global War on Terror (GWOT) apparently didn’t go down well with his superiors at the Justice Department. Recently released documents show that one reason aides to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales cited in justifying the decision to fire Iglesias as U.S attorney late last year was that he was an “absentee landlord” who was spending too much time away from the office.........

....;/The OSC’s inquiry into the Iglesias case—first reported this week in NEWSWEEK— injects yet another irony to the controversy over the U.S. attorney firings.
The Bush administration has vigorously promoted enforcement of USERRA—in large part because of the dramatic increase in National Guard and military reserve members who have been called into active duty due to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The law’s purpose—highlighted by Gonzales himself in a Justice Department press release last summer—is to make sure reservists and National Guard members don’t suffer in the workplace when they are called to serve their country............

see? what did i just say in the previous posting?

Bush bypassing Senate to name conservative academic to post

Ron Brynaert

President Bush intends to bypass the Senate in order to name a "conservative academic" to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), Wednesday's Wall Street Journal reports.........

................According to the paper, "Susan Dudley, the former head of regulatory studies at George Mason University's Mercatus Center, has generated opposition from environmentalists and liberal interest groups, who say she would carry out a pro-business agenda at the expense of public health and safety."
Saturday's
LA Times noted that Dudley and two others that the president wishes to appoint "have ties to industries that face costly Environmental Protection Agency restrictions, and all three have previously bypassed or questioned the EPA's scientific process."............

...............In an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle, Jon Carroll writes that Dudley "is already on record as believing that the EPA rules are too strict.".......

it's NOT (really it's not) the fact ms dudley is a 'conservative'. it's the fact ms dudly MAY not be the RIGHT person for this job. the fact ms dudley MAY not really be concerned with the environment at all

the nomination was (suspiciously) withdrawn

and bam the dude is now (suspiciously) the AMBASSADOR TO BELGIUM

yet ANOTHER example of the of the trickery the deceit the lies the appointments of pals (which happens in EVERY administration however this one picks THE most inappropriate ones)

Bush recess appoints major Swift Boat Vets donor

Michael Roston

President George W. Bush circumvented Senate opposition today and recess appointed a controversial nominee as Ambassador to Belgium. Sam Fox, who donated thousands of dollars to the anti-John Kerry Swift Boat Veterans For Truth before the 2004 Presidential election, received the nod from the White House in a quiet personnel announcement this afternoon that caught Senate Democrats off guard.
President Bush
had formally withdrawn Fox's nomination last week when it appeared likely that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee would reject it and prevent him from receiving a full vote on the Senate floor. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) issued a strong response shortly before boarding an airplane late in the day, questioning the legal basis for the action..............

ah and a bit more from the hartford courant

By DAVID LIGHTMAN, Washington Bureau Chief, The Hartford Courant

................Connecticut's senators became active on opposite sides of the controversy.Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with Senate Democrats, took the extraordinary step in February of testifying on behalf of Fox, praising his civic work and calling him a man who "represents what America is all about."The day after the 2006 election, Fox and his wife each contributed $10,500 to Lieberman's Senate re-election campaign.Last week, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, D-Conn., the second-ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, took a very different view.``His unwillingness to denounce the reprehensible activities of the Swift Boat organization, and express regret for providing $50,000 to bankroll the organization, convinced me that he would not be an acceptable candidate to represent the United States abroad," said Dodd, who usually goes along with presidential nominees...................

i received a note from dimitris rentzis

on the original posting i did on lance corporal justin bailey. let me correct that, on the DEATH of lance corporal justin bailey - who happened to be the best friend of dimitris rentzis

i wanted to post dimitris' letter. he wanted me to use names, i don't feel quite right about that (i'm sorry dimitris).

Thank you for posting the story in your blog. It is a total shame what happened. Now the VA is trying to prove me a liar claiming the staff was never warned. There are too many phone records, witnesses and taped phone conversations that will prove the staff wrong. I've dealt with people like them before and I learned how to document events when I see the warning signs of a disaster.I have overwhelming evidence that the staff was warned, including Dr. W, who started him on Methadone on Dec 12th 2006. I have phone records to prove that I warned this Dr. W on Dec 8th, four days prior to sealing Justin's fate and starting him on 30 day supply of methadone totally UNSUPERVISED, violating the FDA warning to all MDs about Methadone, issued last November.

The staff that was warned do not return my calls and they did not even show in the 2 meetings the VA held between staff and patients to discuss what happened to Justin and how to "improve" the program. This is how they show their respect for someone that fought for them in Iraq. They are nothing but spineless cowards, that murdered my best friend with their negligence and now hiding behind the VA administration. The main 4 people responsible for this tragedy are: DR W, A (the most incompetant social worker in charge of vets with Post Tramautic Stress Disorder),Dr L(Queen Bee of the domiciliary) and P (careless social worker).

But even if the staff were not warned as they claim, there is still a lot of evidence in Justin's VA medical records by previous doctors that he can not properly self medicate and abuses his medications. Why didn't Dr W and L read his medical records??? Isn't this what doctors are supposed to do in an intake??? I'll tell you why; because they see the vets as cattle that needs to be overmedicated in hope they will OD and won't collect their due dissability benefits. Because they see the VA as a source of passive income to finance their hollywood hills pads.

Plus he died under their watch. He went there to get help. He survived Iraq, street drugs and died under the "safe grounds" of VA rehab.

Plus, common sense tells you if you have an addiction to illicit drugs that that same addictive behavior will carry over to prescription drugs.

What is wrong with this picture? Is this United States in 2007 or some 3rd world country ? Even a Tijuana clinic would provide better health care .....

The media exposure is not finished with this VA. Feel free to post this in your blog.

Sincerely,

Dimitris Rentzis

and coincidentally, i found THIS in attytood today

the other day a spokesperson for king george

said he had not visited patients at walter reed because he couldn't find the time on his busy schedule.

well in this article (which isn't about walter reed - but it steams me none the less or all the more) it clearly states king george was running around yesterday so he could BEGIN HIS EASTER BREAK (wtf?????????????? is he a college student now??????????).

at any rate, if i were him i sure as shite wouldn't be taking ANY breaks. i'd be visiting our wounded, i'd be making sure our children had adequate health care AND education. i'd be making sure those displaced by hurricanes had adequate housing, i'd make sure...(you get the point). i wouldn't be taking ANY vacations or breaks.

For Bush, Fighting Democrats And Doubts

By Peter Baker Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, April 4, 2007; Page A01
He strode alone into the Rose Garden and complained that "it has now been 57 days" since he asked Congress for more money for the Iraq war and still has not gotten it. For President Bush, the fight over war-spending legislation has become the only talking point -- an opportunity, his strategists hope, to demonstrate strength and turn the tables on a Democratic Congress that may be overreaching.
But as he answered questions yesterday before heading off for an Easter break (fort lauderdale watch out!!!), Bush was confronted with another narrative, this one about friends and voters losing faith in his leadership. He is not, he said in response to a question, more "isolated from his own party in Congress" than any president of the past half-century, as one conservative columnist wrote. He has not, he said, lost his "gut-level bond with the American public," as the chief strategist of his 2004 campaign wrote..................

WaPo: Wage gap is "A Bargain At 77 Cents To a Dollar"

Did you know that making less money than men is a good thing? Oh, you like paying the bills and feeding your kids? Well don't fret, Carrie Lukas is here to set you straight!
Lukas, the
vice president of the anti-feminist organization the Independent Women's Forum, has a column in today's Washington Post assuring women that the wage gap is "a bargain." No seriously, she swears.
Yes, the Labor Department regularly issues new data comparing the median wage of women who work full time with the median wage of men who work full time, and women's earnings bob at around three-quarters those of men. But this statistic says little about women's compensation and the influence of discrimination on men's and women's earnings. All the relevant factors that affect pay -- occupation, experience, seniority, education and hours worked -- are ignored. This sound-bite statistic fails to take into account the different roles that work tends to play in men's and women's lives...............

........But that's not the point. What is the point is that Lukas is full of shit.
She argues that the wage gap exists because women "choose" to make less money by taking time off or working in jobs for "personal fulfillment" over pay. (Because there's nothing fulfilling about making money, I guess.)
But in fact,
last year on Equal Pay Day, The Washington Post ran an article debunking nonsense theories like Lukas':............

ABC News Exclusive: The Secret War Against Iran

Brian Ross and Christopher Isham Report:

A Pakistani tribal militant group responsible for a series of deadly guerrilla raids inside Iran has been secretly encouraged and advised by American officials since 2005, U.S. and Pakistani intelligence sources tell ABC News.
The group, called Jundullah, is made up of members of the Baluchi tribe and operates out of the Baluchistan province in Pakistan, just across the border from Iran.
It has taken responsibility for the deaths and kidnappings of more than a dozen Iranian soldiers and officials..................

Gingrich: When I Said ‘Language Of Living In The Ghetto,’ I Meant Hebrew (Or Maybe Yiddish)

Newt Gingrich said this past weekend that the U.S. should abolish bilingual education so that people aren’t speaking “the language of living in a ghetto.”
But last night on Hannity & Colmes, Gingrich claimed his statement “did not refer to Spanish.” Gingrich insisted, “What I meant is very clear[],” but then wouldn’t say which language he was referring to.
Gingrich said, “Now, I’ll let you pick — frankly, ghetto, historically had referred as a Jewish reference originally. I did not mention Hispanics, and I certainly do not want anybody who speaks Spanish to think I’m in any way less than respectful of Spanish or any other language spoken by people who come to the United States.” ............

Police Log Confirms FBI Role In Arrests
Group Detained, Questioned During D.C. War Protest

By Carol D. Leonnig Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, April 3, 2007; Page B01
A secret FBI intelligence unit helped detain a group of war protesters in a downtown Washington parking garage in April 2002 and interrogated some of them on videotape about their political and religious beliefs, newly uncovered documents and interviews show.
For years, law enforcement authorities suggested it never happened. The FBI and D.C. police said they had no records of such an incident. And police told a federal court that no FBI agents were present when officers arrested more than 20 protesters that afternoon for trespassing; police viewed them as suspicious for milling around the parking garage entrance............

...........The probable cause to arrest the protesters as they retrieved food from their parked van? They were wearing black -- a color choice the FBI and police associated with anarchists, according to the police records.
FBI agents dressed in street clothes separated members to question them one by one about protests they attended, whom they had spent time with recently, what political views they espoused and the significance of their tattoos and slogans, according to interviews and court records.....................

of course i won't laugh because of what we are doing to the iraqi's country. we're destroying it. we're uprooting people. we're stirring up trouble (and that's the LEAST of it)

McCain Wrong on Iraq Security, Merchants Say

By KIRK SEMPLE
Published: April 3, 2007
BAGHDAD, April 2 — A day after members of an American Congressional delegation led by Senator John McCain pointed to their brief visit to Baghdad’s central market as evidence that the new security plan for the city was working, the merchants there were incredulous about the Americans’ conclusions.

“What are they talking about?” Ali Jassim Faiyad, the owner of an electrical appliances shop in the market, said Monday. “The security procedures were abnormal!”
The delegation arrived at the market, which is called Shorja, on Sunday with more than 100 soldiers in armored Humvees — the equivalent of an entire company — and attack helicopters circled overhead, a senior American military official in Baghdad said. The soldiers redirected traffic from the area and restricted access to the Americans, witnesses said, and sharpshooters were posted on the roofs. The congressmen wore bulletproof vests throughout their hourlong visit.

“They paralyzed the market when they came,” Mr. Faiyad said during an interview in his shop on Monday. “This was only for the media.”
He added, “This will not change anything.”.........

you go boy!

this is news?

isn't this something we ALL know already? (even though there are still a ton of people denying it)

Intelligence Failures Surrounded Inquiry on Iraq-Niger Uranium Claim

By Peter Eisner Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, April 3, 2007; Page A01
It was 3 a.m. in Italy on Jan. 29, 2003, when President Bush in Washington began reading his State of the Union address that included the now famous -- later retracted -- 16 words: "The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."
Like most Europeans, Elisabetta Burba, an investigative reporter for the Italian newsweekly Panorama, waited until the next day to read the newspaper accounts of Bush's remarks. But when she came to the 16 words, she recalled, she got a sudden sinking feeling in her stomach. She wondered: How could the American president have mentioned a uranium sale from Africa?...........

...............Dozens of interviews with current and former intelligence officials and policymakers in the United States, Britain, France and Italy show that the Bush administration disregarded key information available at the time showing that the Iraq-Niger claim was highly questionable............

A Salute for His Wounded, a Last Touch for His Dead

By RICHARD A. OPPEL Jr.
Published: April 2, 2007
BAQUBA, Iraq, March 31 — In the last moments of his life, Sgt. First Class Benjamin L. Sebban saw the flatbed truck speed into the concertina wire guarding his small Army patrol base near Baquba.
Everybody get down! Get down!” he screamed. Soldiers dropped to the ground.
A combination of the strong wire and muddy gravel stopped the bomber, who then detonated explosives packed into the truck bed. A 50-foot-wide fireball enveloped the base, an L-shaped school that weeks earlier had served as an insurgent hide-out. Soldiers were slammed into walls and windows, they later recalled, battered by pieces of brick and glass turned into shrapnel......

...............At almost precisely the same time another helicopter landed in Baquba. It carried Col. David Sutherland, commander of the American combat brigade in Diyala Province. He was returning from the large military base in Balad, where he had visited wounded soldiers and gone to the morgue, where he saluted and then prayed as he placed his hands on a long black body bag containing the body of a military policeman killed that day by a sniper in Baquba.
It had been a long day for Colonel Sutherland and his brigade chaplain, Maj. Charlie Fenton, who have taken it on themselves to visit every dead and badly wounded soldier in the 5,000-strong unit, the Third Brigade Combat Team of the First Cavalry Division.......

..............For some, grief is compounded because they feel no one back home grasps the perils they endure. “We’ve just got a lot of guys dying,” said one combat soldier who did not want his name published. “This country is not getting any better. Nobody really understands what’s going on.”.........

(i want to answer that soldier by saying, you're right. i am not there. i DON'T know what is going on. i will NEVER stop thinking of you and your fellow troops though. no matter what sort of news comes out of iraq, I KNOW IT'S NOT EASY being there. i know it's dangerous. i know it's a foreign culture. i know it's NOT getting any better)

Bomber Kills 13 in Kirkuk, Wounds Dozens
By YAHYA BARZANJI

KIRKUK, Iraq (AP) - A suicide truck bomber targeted a police station in the oil-rich northern city of Kirkuk on Monday, killing at least 13 people and wounding dozens, including many children from a nearby school, police said.
The attacker rammed the truck into the concrete blast barriers protecting the back of the compound at about 11:30 a.m., detonating his explosives, which were hidden under a load of flour, local police spokesman Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qadir said.
The Rahim Awa police compound is in a predominantly Kurdish neighborhood in a northern part of the city, and other officials said U.S. troops had been visiting an Iraqi criminal investigations unit when the blast occurred.
AP Television News footage showed one U.S. soldier seen standing nearby with a bandage around his head and blood on the front of his uniform. The U.S. command in Baghdad said it was looking into the report.............

McCain strolls Baghdad with Armed Escort

Posted by Evan Derkacz at 6:20 PM on April 1, 2007.

Last week John McCain was caught with his pants down, claiming that "General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee."
It was not true -- not by a longshot -- and he was forced to beat a hasty and mealy-mouthed retreat.
Today, McCain, who also said that "There are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods, today," went out to a market very close to the Green Zone with over 100 armed guards, 3 helicopters, 2 gunships (and a partridge in a...) before holding a press conference in which
he reiterated his "it ain't as bad as they tell you in the media" storyline: "The American people are not getting the full picture of what's happening here..."..............

Visiting Iraq, McCain Cites Progress on Safety Issues

By Sudarsan Raghavan and Saad al-Izzi Washington Post Foreign Service and Washington Post Foreign Service Monday, April 2, 2007; Page A10
BAGHDAD, April 1 -- After a heavily guarded walk through a newly fortified Baghdad market, Sen. John McCain declared that the American public was not getting "a full picture" of the progress unfolding in Iraq.
McCain (Ariz.), who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, cited a drop in murders, the creation of a constellation of joint U.S.-Iraqi military outposts and a rise in intelligence tips as signs of the progress............

...............His comments came on a day when the military reported that six American soldiers had been killed by roadside bombs southwest of Baghdad. Murder rates are down, but suicide bombings continue to plague the capital, and violence in other parts of Iraq is surging. At least 152 people were killed last week in twin truck bombings that targeted Shiites in Tall Afar, according to the Interior Ministry, which would make the attack the deadliest since the U.S.-led invasion four years ago. The strike triggered reprisal attacks against Sunnis that left at least 45 dead.................

White House Claims Dowd Is Too Emotional, Turned On Bush Because Of ‘Personal Turmoil’

The New York Times reports today that President Bush’s former chief campaign strategist Matthew Dowd has “lost faith” in the president, due primarily to differences over the Iraq war. “If the American public says they’re done with something, our leaders have to understand what they want…They’re saying, ‘Get out of Iraq.’
Dowd “said he hoped in part that
by coming forward he would be able to get a message through to a presidential inner sanctum that he views as increasingly isolated.” This morning on CBS, White House Counselor Dan Bartlett crushed any such hopes that Bush’s inner circle would heed the advice of a once-trusted aide. Instead, as it has done frequently in the past, the White House engaged in a counteroffensive, assailing the character of the person sounding the alarms...........
