Arizona artists told to repaint mural to be less ethnic
By Muriel Kane
The leader of a group of artists says he was ordered to lighten the skin tones of children depicted in an outdoor mural covering two walls of a Prescott, Arizona elementary school because of complaints that the faces appeared too ethnic.
"We consistently, for two months, had people shouting racial slander from their cars," R.E. Wall told AZCentral. "We had children painting with us, and here come these yells of (epithet for Blacks) and (epithet for Hispanics)." Wall explained that "because of the controversy," he was told to make the children's faces lighter and happier.
Principal Jeff Lane, however, insisted that he had only received three complaints about the mural and that all he wanted was for the artists to "fix the shading on the children's faces."
"We were looking at it from an artistic view," Lane claimed "Nothing at all to do with race." Lane's order, however, came only after City Councilman Steve Blair had used his radio talk show to start a campaign for the mural to be removed.
On May 21, Blair stated, "I am not a racist individual, but I will tell you depicting a black guy in the middle of that mural, based upon who's president of the United States today and based upon the history of this community when I grew up, we had four black families - who I have been very good friends with for years - to depict the biggest picture on that building as a black person, I would have to ask the question, 'Why?'".....................

i have a few words for the rebbe
well TWO words..................
Rabbi Bans Women From Elections
According to BBC, Chief Rabbi Elyakim Levanon of the West Bank has recently banned women from running in elections in his community. After an anonymous woman wrote to him, expressing her interest in running for Common Secretary, Rabbi Levanon said:
“The first problem is giving women authority, and being a secretary means having authority. The second problem is mixing men and women. Secretary meetings are held at night and sometimes end very late. It is not proper to be in mixed company in such situations.”
He also wrote a column in the community newspaper which suggested that ‘women must only be heard through their husbands.’

Palin's Ties To Malek, Nixon Jew Counter, Highlighted By DNC
Democratic officials clearly see an opening to score some political points after the Washington Post (following Slate) reported Thursday morning on new documents highlighting the extent to which GOP power broker Fred Malek helped target and purge Jews during the Nixon administration.
The scandal is nearly 40 years old and Malek long ago apologized for his role. But the longtime GOP hand is arguably as much of a mover and shaker within the party now as he was serving in the Executive Office. And the posting of new material related to his effort to "check the Jews throughout the administration" has given Democrats a chance to put an uncomfortable spotlight on those Republicans lawmakers with close ties to Malek.................

Conservative pundits blame Obama for Israeli raid on flotilla
By Daniel Tencer
Kucinich: Flotilla raid jeopardizes US troops in Iraq
Some conservative commentators and lawmakers are pointing the finger of blame at President Barack Obama over Israel's raid on a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla that ended with the death of nine activists.
On Tuesday, Sen. John McCain told Fox News that the Obama administration's calls for a settlement freeze in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem set the stage for the deadly May 31 incident.
"This is another step in a chain of unfortunate events beginning with President Obama’s insistence that there be a freeze, as a precondition for peace talks, a freeze on settlements in Jerusalem," McCain told Fox's Sean Hannity. "Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, not a settlement."
Talk show host Michael Savage linked President Obama to the flotilla raid much more directly. Savage told listeners that he believed the Israeli commandos sent on board the Mavi Marmara were "betrayed" so that their deaths would be "good PR" for Israel's allies. (No Israeli service members died in the raid.) And he suggested it was the Obama administration that pressured Israel into "dangling [its] soldiers like bait into a tank of sharks."...........

AT&T data plan pricing, details
AT&T is dropping its $30-a-month unlimited data plan as of Monday and replacing it with a two-tier pricing system for new customers. Current AT&T customers with unlimited data plans can stick with them.
Here are AT&T's estimates for how much a user will get out of the data allotments in the new plans. The amount can vary greatly, however. For example, one e-mail with five high-resolution photo attachments could use up 5% of the monthly allotment on the DataPlus plan............

................BP CEO: No Underwater Oil Plumes; Workers Sickened by Food Poisoning
BP has vowed to clean up the spill, but is now trying to deny aspects of its environmental damage. On Sunday, BP CEO Tony Hayward was quoted disputing experts’ claims to have discovered oil plumes trapped in large quantities and spreading miles underseas. Hayward said, "The oil is on the surface. There aren’t any plumes." Hayward also told reporters he doubts that scores of workers and fishermen have gotten sick from the toxic dispersants used to break up the oil in the water. He instead said the workers had suffered food poisoning.
Tony Hayward: "I’m sure they were genuinely ill, but whether it was anything to do with dispersants and oil, whether it was food poisoning or some other reason for them being ill, you know, there’s a—food poisoning is clearly a big issue when you’ve got a, you know, concentration of this number of people in temporary camps, temporary accommodation. It’s something we have to be very, very mindful of. It’s one of the big issues of keeping the army operating. You know, armies march on their stomachs."
A number of workers involved in the clean-up have been hospitalized. Hayward’s comment came shortly after he publicly complained about the disaster’s impact on his personal life...........

U.S. attorney general opens criminal probe of gulf oil spill
Washington Post Staff Writer
NEW ORLEANS -- Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. announced Tuesday that his office is using "the full weight" of its investigative power to pursue criminal and civil investigations into the oil spill that has devastated the Gulf Coast.
"The Department of Justice will ensure that the American people do not foot the bill for this disaster and that our laws are enforced to the fullest extent possible," he said.
Earlier in the day, President Obama vowed a "full and vigorous accounting" of the causes of the disaster, telling the leaders of a new commission that they should pursue the trail of blame without limits.
"They have my full support to follow the facts wherever they may lead, without fear or favor," Obama said in the Rose Garden on Tuesday after meeting with the co-chairmen of the commission, former Florida senator and governor Bob Graham and former EPA administrator William Reilly.
Holder's announcement came at an afternoon news conference in New Orleans, the same day the attorney general met with local law enforcement officials and surveyed part of the affected area.
"What we saw this morning was oil for miles and miles and miles, oil that we know has already affected plants and animal life along the coast and has impacted the lives and livelihoods of all too many in this region," he said. "This must not be forgotten."...............

USA Swimming Names 36 Who Were Banned For Molesting Female Swimmers
In March, the Women’s Rights section of change.org had an article about the decades-old pattern of male swim coaches molesting female swimmers. The article said that:
This suit has come about in large part because of 1972 Olympic champion Deena Deardurff Schmidt, who, over a 4-year period in the 1960′s, was molested by her coach. When Schmidt reported the abuse to the national swimming organization in the late 1980′s, she was turned aside because of the organization’s rules that a complaint must be filed by an active swimmer or the person would have to find a coach who would back up her story. So her complaint went nowhere..............A suit filed in California alleges that the the governing body of U.S. competitive swimming has failed to address widespread sexual abuse of young girls at swim clubs across the country. According to the Associated Press, the suit alleges that “more than 30 coaches nationwide have engaged in sexual misconduct with young females, and says there is a culture in competitive swimming of condoning inappropriate relationships between coaches and swimmers.”

Fisherman files restraining order against BP
By Elizabeth Cohen, CNN..............
In an affidavit, Wunstell wrote he started experiencing severe headaches and nasal irritation on May 24. Over the next few days, he also developed nosebleeds, an upset stomach, and aches.
On Friday, Wunstell was airlifted to West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero, Louisiana, where he remained hospitalized Sunday.
Eight other workers were brought to the hospital this week and were all released.
"We need to start protecting these guys," said Jim Klick, Wunstell's lawyer.
In his affidavit, Wunstell described his experience at the hospital.
"At West Jefferson, there were tents set up outside the hospital, where I was stripped of my clothing, washed with water and several showers, before I was allowed into the hospital," Wunstell said. "When I asked for my clothing, I was told that BP had confiscated all of my clothing and it would not be returned."
The restraining order requests that BP refrain from "altering, testing or destroying clothing or any other evidence or potential evidence" when workers become ill...............

Political ads are tough sell for image-conscious corporations
Washington Post Staff Writer
All over the country, corporate CEOs and trade groups are asking their lawyers the same question: How can we get our companies involved in this political election season without leaving tracks?
After a landmark Supreme Court ruling this year freed executives to spend unlimited corporate cash on campaigns, some predicted that businesses would flood television airwaves with pro-industry political ads -- but that just hasn't happened yet. Image-sensitive corporations are still trying to make sure that, if they jump into 2010 politicking, they do so as anonymously as possible, according to Republican political operatives and trade group leaders. ...........

Ocean Life Thrives On Crude Oil ! Meet Congressional Candidate Art Robinson
How far out are the candidates the GOP is fielding in the 2010 election ? Well, a few weeks ago I covered Rand Paul’s ties to the Constitution Party that’s heavily influenced by Christian Reconstructionism – whose leaders want to stone, bash to death with rocks that is, gays, overly rebellious children, and women who have sex before marriage.
Then there’s Tim D’Annunzio, a Tea-Partying congressional candidate vying to be the GOP’s nominee in North Carolina’s 8th District, who according to his ex-wife (who, admittedly, may bear a bit of a grudge) “had claimed to be the Messiah, had traveled to New Jersey to raise his stepfather from the dead, [and] believed God would drop a 1,000-mile high pyramid as the New Jerusalem on Greenland and found the Ark of the Covenant in Arizona.”
Moving along, on a more serious note, consider Arthur Robinson.
Running on the GOP ticket for Congress in Oregon’s 4th District, Art Robinson, who in 2004 wrote that the world’s ocean life was “starved” for crude oil, might want to consider adopting, as a campaign mascot, a dolphin.................

Child Brides Escape Marriage, but Not Lashes
By ROD NORDLAND and ALISSA J. RUBIN
KABUL, Afghanistan — The two Afghan girls had every reason to expect the law would be on their side when a policeman at a checkpoint stopped the bus they were in. Disguised in boys’ clothes, the girls, ages 13 and 14, had been fleeing for two days along rutted roads and over mountain passes to escape their illegal, forced marriages to much older men, and now they had made it to relatively liberal Herat Province.Instead, the police officer spotted them as girls, ignored their pleas and promptly sent them back to their remote village in Ghor Province. There they were publicly and viciously flogged for daring to run away from their husbands.
Their tormentors, who videotaped the abuse, were not the Taliban, but local mullahs and the former warlord, now a pro-government figure who largely rules the district where the girls live.
Neither girl flinched visibly at the beatings, and afterward both walked away with their heads unbowed. Sympathizers of the victims smuggled out two video recordings of the floggings to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, which released them on Saturday after unsuccessfully lobbying for government action...............

Grandson of explorer Jacques Cousteau slams ‘bullshit’ claim that oceans absorb pollution
By Stephen C. Webster
Phillippe Cousteau, Jr., grandson of famed ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau (pictured), has a unique position in today's media when it comes to discussing British Petroleum's massive Gulf of Mexico oil gusher. Unlike many others who've tried, he is capable of framing the massive and yet-unchecked disaster for the masses, placing the true scale in terms most humans can grasp.
That's why, appearing on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday, he called "bullshit" the "perfect" term to describe the right-wing media's repeated claim that the oceans can simply absorb all of mankind's pollution.
After noting that public officials in at least one Louisiana parish he'd visited have actually taken over BP's equipment to jump-start the cleanup effort, Cousteau paused, wearing a pained expression.
"It's a little too late, though," he said................
Bill Maher Interviews Ecologist Philippe Cousteau On The Gulf Of Mexico’s Future
by Frances MartelPhilippe Cousteau, Jr., the ecologist grandson of Jacques, joined Bill Maher on Real Time last night to give his assessment of the Gulf of Mexico, where he has been working to help clean up the oil washing ashore from the the open offshore oil well. While he seemed confident that there was a way to fix the problem, he stressed that the ocean ecosystem will not fix itself.
Maher asked about the situation in Louisiana, where Cousteau had been working for the past weeks– his answer was not incredibly optimistic. He did have a direct answer for people who believe the ocean is strong and healthy enough to fix itself:
“I could cut my leg off, I could cut my arm off, I could gouge my eye out, I’d still probably survive, but not very well, and that’s what we’re doing to the ocean. It’s the life support system of this planet. We’ve been dumping in it, we’ve been polluting it, we’ve been destroying it for decades, and we’re essentially maiming ourselves… It’s not a question of whether the oceans can take anymore. The ocean can’t take any more. They couldn’t take any more fifty years ago. The question is, ‘when are we going to stop?’”,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
happy memorial day

Shot by sniper in Iraq, billed for $3K by military in U.S.
By Laura Rillos KVAL News
LEBANON, Ore. -- A former Oregon National Guard soldier and Purple Heart recipient is being billed for military-issued equipment he believes was lost in Iraq after he was shot and evacuated from the country.
Gary Pfleider II feels disrespected by the charges. He said he lost sight of the gear when he left Iraq and believes he should not be responsible for it now.
He doesn't remember much about getting shot in September 2007. He knows he was riding in a truck on patrol near Balad, Iraq. ........
..............
Pfleider was taken to Landsthul Regional Medical Center in Germany and treated for a week at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, before arriving at what is now called Joint Base Lewis McChord in Washington State.
He lost one-third of the muscle in his left leg and will have to wear a brace for the rest of his life.
After one year, he left the base and the Oregon National Guard. By then, his unit had returned to Oregon.
Pfleider inventoried his belongings and discovered several personal items and military-issued gear, including clothing, canteens and grenades, were missing.
He believed the supervisors at his former unit in Albany had filed paperwork clearing him of the charges.
But in June 2009, Pfleider received a bill for $3,175.88. Shortly afterward, the federal government began taking $120 out of his Social Security disability checks each month. Pfleider said his state and federal tax returns were also frozen..................
