how cool is this?

(via makezine)

and this story just keeps getting weirder

first we hear she cloned her dog. then we hear she MAY have been the one who kidnapped and made a YOUNG mormon (missionary???) her sex slave and NOW:

Dog cloner Joyce McKinney sought over burglary to fund horse's wooden leg

Remember the story about the pit bull cloner who is suspected by many of being the same woman who kidnapped a Mormon missionary 30 years ago to be her sex slave? Well, she is now suspected of plotting a burglary in Tennessee to procure funds for an artificial horse leg. Joyce Bernann McKinney, a former beauty queen who earlier this year paid £25,000 to have her dead pet recreated, is accused of instructing a 15-year-old boy to break into a house because she needed funds to help another beloved animal, her three-legged horse. ............

Bill Would End Ban on Photos of Returning Military Dead
By Daryl Lang

NEW YORK The Pentagon would be required to grant journalists access to ceremonies honoring fallen military personnel, under a bill recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation is significant because it would, for the first time since Vietnam, let photojournalists capture the powerful images of flag-draped caskets arriving on American soil during wartime. This week the bill won the endorsement of the National Press Photographers Association. The Fallen Hero Commemoration Act, or H.R. 6662, was introduced July 30 by Rep. Walter B. Jones (R-N.C.), a member of the House Committee on Armed Services. The bill states: "The Secretary of Defense shall grant access to accredited members of the media at military commemoration ceremonies and memorial services conducted by the Armed Forces for members of the Armed Forces who have died on active duty and when the remains of members of the Armed Forces arrive at military installations in the United States." It was referred to the Committee on Armed Services.........

Fox suggests swiftboat author being swiftboated himself
David Edwards and Muriel Kane

Jeromi Corsi, the author of Obama Nation, was welcomed to Fox & Friends on Friday to respond to charges made against him and his book in a 40-page rebuttal from the Obama Campaign, "Unfit for Publication."

"Essentially it calls you a liar and a bigot," suggested Fox's Steve Doocy.

"I think some juvenile leftists have taken over the Obama campaign and gotten a hold of Photoshop," Corsi replied. "Now I'm getting death threats and hate mail from Obama supporters."

"You're getting these death threats because you wrote a book," Doocy agreed, "and in fact there's a website, Daily Kos, that's published your home address."

RAW STORY has been unable to find Corsi's home address at Daily Kos -- only his email and the address and phone number of one of his employers -- but it is possible that it was posted and then removed by site moderators.......

'Obama the Antichrist?' CNN actually asks
David Edwards and Nick Juliano

Just so we're clear: Barack Obama is in fact not the Anti-Christ, sent here to feed on the souls of the innocent, resume Satan's reign over earth and bring about the apocalypse as foretold in Revelation.

Not. The. Anti-Christ.

That such a subject is even speculated about in any but the most backwards, unreconstructed segments of American society -- let alone on a 24-hour cable network -- is a testament (no pun intended) to the depths to which political debate has fallen. But there was the caption on CNN Friday in big bold letters: "OBAMA THE ANTICHRIST?"......

buzzflash chose a GREAT media putz of the week!

and this week, the 'honor' goes to cokie roberts. why? well the way i see it, she turned the meaning of one word, 'exotic' into the "n" word (or close) without actually SAYING the "n" word on national tv.

she faulted a man who was going to see his ailing grandmother (whom he hadn't seen in over a year)

hey cokie - WE ACTUALLY HAVE 50 STATES NOW YA KNOW

Cokie's Slanders on Obama and Hawaii May be Just What the RNC Ordered

Cokie Roberts

For reporting that is an embarrassment to the profession of journalism, and for being beholden to corporate paymasters rather than the citizens of America.

Cokie Roberts went on attack this week, trying to portray Sen. Barack Obama's vacation to the state in which he was born and raised, and where close family members still live, as seditious. Instead, we think she came off looking like a bigoted tool of the RNC, which more than qualifies her to be this week's Media Putz.

Roberts began her attack on ABC's This Week on Aug. 10. She somehow managed to admit Hawaii's statehood, while in the same breath erroneously calling it "foreign."

"I know his grandmother lives in Hawaii and I know Hawaii is a state, but it has the look of him going off to some sort of foreign, exotic place. He should be in Myrtle Beach, if he's going to take a vacation at this point."

Then on National Public Radio's Morning Edition the next day, Roberts repeated the attack to host Renee Montagne:

"I know that he is from Hawaii, he grew up there, his grandmother lives there, but he's made such a point about how he is from Kansas and, you know, the boy from Kansas and Kenya and it makes him seem a little bit more exotic than perhaps he would want to come across as at this stage in the presidential campaign."

Basically, Roberts is attacking Obama for not making his vacation into a political stunt. He usually visits Hawaii yearly, for Christmas vacation, but had to skip last year due to the campaign. He recently lamented the fact that he hasn't seen his grandmother, who is unable to travel due to health problems for about 19 months...........

i think it's important for you to

read the following piece. it's not that long and it's well written

The Tragic Arkansas Shooting and Conservative Hate-Speech

Posted by Steven D., Booman Tribune

I've waited until today to make my first comments about the murder of the Chair of Arkansas' Democratic Party. I wanted to make sure that there was no personal connection between the shooter and Bill Gwatney, and apparently there wasn't one. Instead, there are some initial eerie similarities between the shooter Timothy Dale Johnson, and the man who massacred members of the Unitarian church in Knoxville, Tennessee last month. Both, for example had just lost their jobs, and both were very, very angry about that fact:

Wreaths and flowers lined the sidewalk in front of Arkansas' Democratic Party headquarters Thursday while police and others tried to explain why a man who lost his job at a Target store drove more than 30 miles and fatally shot the party's chairman.
Until Wednesday morning, when he wrote profanity-laced graffiti on a store wall, Timothy Dale Johnson had been a good employee in a stockroom, a Target spokeswoman said.........

And the winner of the worst writing of 2008 is ...

SAN JOSE, California (AP) -- A grotesque comparison of a steamy love affair to a New York City street has won a Washington man this year's grand prize in an annual contest of bad writing.
Garrison Spik, a 41-year-old communications director and writer, took top honors in San Jose State University's 26th annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest with this opening sentence to a nonexistent novel:
"Theirs was a New York love, a checkered taxi ride burning rubber, and like the city their passion was open 24/7, steam rising from their bodies like slick streets exhaling warm, moist, white breath through manhole covers stamped 'Forged by DeLaney Bros., Piscataway, N.J."'...............

Purple Prose? His Is Truly Bruising

Washington Post Staff Writer

The results for the 26th annual Bulwer-Lytton contest were announced last week, and for the first time, the winner is a Washingtonian.

And the Bulwer-Lytton is . . .

"It's like the Nobel Prize for Literature," explains 2008 recipient Garrison Spik, whose day job is communications director for Mervis Diamond Importers. "But at the other end of the spectrum. And the prize money is $999,750 less."

The Bulwer-Lytton, in fact, rewards the most wretched, the most inept, the most fantastically awful abuses of English writing. The kind of language that should be taken out and shot. Each year applicants submit putrefying one-sentence openings to bogus novels; this year Spik's was chosen from some 8,000 entries.......

i would like to understand why anyone would

Alleged KBR Rape Victim Sues the U.S.

There’s a new lawsuit in the sad and sordid saga of Jamie Leigh Jones.

A former KBR employee who made national headlines with her heart-wrenching account of being raped while working at Camp Hope in Baghdad, Jones filed a lawsuit several days ago in Houston federal court against the United States of America. She filed a lawsuit against her former employer more than a year ago.

The Houston woman is suing the government for negligent supervision and hiring of its contractors and for failing to provide a safe living and working environment.

Jones claims that in July 2005, she was living in a two-story barracks with 420 men and only 20 other women, and that the facility was under the “direct control and supervision” of the U.S. government and its employees. Jones complained about constant sexual harassment and asked to be moved to a safer location, but her superiors did not transfer her.

Instead, later that same evening, according to the lawsuit, Jones was drugged and “brutally raped” in her room by several Halliburton/KBR firefighters............

NRA to gun owners: Beware of Obama

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The National Rifle Association said Wednesday that Barack Obama is trying to mislead voters about his past support of gun control, calling the Democratic candidate "a poster child of the extremist, elitist gun control movement."

The group was responding to recent remarks by Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat who supports gun rights and told reporters this week that Obama "ain't ever going to take your gun away." Schweitzer, who has the NRA's support in his re-election bid, added that there is little difference between the Democrat and Republican John McCain.........

as a little aside, my favorite are the close up slight of hand illusions/misdirections. i KNOW how most of them are done (i had a magician friend). the point is, if they're good, my brain is STILL fooled.

While a Magician Works, the Mind Does the Tricks

By BENEDICT CAREY
A decent backyard magic show is often an exercise in deliberate chaos. Cards whipped through the air. Glasses crashing to the ground. Gasps, hand-waving, loud abracadabras. Something’s bound to catch fire, too, if the performer is ambitious enough — or needs cover.

“Back in the early days, I always had a little smoke and fire, not only for misdirection but to emphasize that something magic had just happened,” said The Great Raguzi, a magician based in Southern California who has performed professionally for more than 35 years, in venues around the world. “But as the magic and magician mature, you see that you don’t need the bigger props.”

Eye-grabbing distractions — to mask a palmed card or coin, say — are only the crudest ways to exploit brain processes that allow for more subtle manipulations, good magicians learn.

In a paper published last week in the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience, a team of brain scientists and prominent magicians described how magic tricks, both simple and spectacular, take advantage of glitches in how the brain constructs a model of the outside world from moment to moment, or what we think of as objective reality...........

Media Go Wild Over Edwards' Infidelities, But Continue to Ignore Those of McCain

While the '04 Democratic VP Nominee is Raked Over the Coals Over His Admission of an Extramarital Affair After Months of Heated Denials, the '08 GOP Presidential Nominee-Elect's Own Affairs Continue to be Ignored by the Mainstream Media -- But Now McCain's Ex-Wife Has Spoken Out, Breaking a Nearly 30-Year Silence

Forgotten woman: Carol Shepp McCain, former wife of Republican presidential nominee-elect John McCain, emerges from her car near her home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, The Arizona senator's ex, now 70, stayed faithful to him throughout his ordeal as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. But after she was severely injured -- and disfigured -- in a 1969 car crash, the man who's now running for president carried on a series of extramarital affairs. His marriage to Carol eventually ended in divorce in 1980, but now the former Mrs. McCain has broken her nearly 30-year public silence..........

SPECIAL REPORT
By Sharon Churcher
London Daily Mail

LONDON -- It has been more than two months since Senator Hillary Clinton of New York formally withdrew from the hard-fought race for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

Since then, the eyes of America -- and the world -- have been focused on the two major parties' apparent nominees: Democratic Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and his Republican Party rival, Senator John McCain of Arizona, as they do battle to win the White House in November's general election.

While Obama will surely press his credentials as the embodiment of the American dream – a handsome, charismatic young black man who was raised on food stamps by a single mother and who represents his country’s future – McCain will present himself as a selfless, principled war hero whose campaign represents not so much a battle for the presidency of the United States, but a crusade to rescue the nation’s tarnished reputation.

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fiber by referring to his five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the former U.S. Navy pilot -- who will turn 72 on August 29 -- pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

But there is another Mrs. McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator’s presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being the mother of McCain’s three eldest children and two sons from a previous marriage...............

Mike Myers Demands McCain Pull Ad with "Wayne's World" Clip

Michael Connery's blog
....................

I'm writing about it now, days after the fact, because Mike Myers, who's Wayne's World sketch is used in the web ad, demanded that the McCain campaign remove the video from YouTube or face legal action for copyright infringement. McCain pulled the video, though as you can see others have already reposted it. My bad, the McCain campaign doesn't seem to care. It's still up on their YouTube page, and it's also still featured on their website.

Again, I think this continues to play right into McCain's hands, as the message on his blog is clearly gleeful about the reaction from Myers. It plays right into their messaging. Still, I did want to point out that this is not the first time something like this has happened to McCain. John Hall and John Mellencamp (not exactly paragons of contemporary cool, but pop culture stars nonetheless) both requested that McCain stop using their songs at his rallies, to say nothing of the recent Paris Hilton video..............

GOP Rep. To Environmentalists: Jesus Already Saved The Planet

By Eric Kleefeld -
We like to keep track of the, er, intriguing sayings of Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, the Christian Right champion from Minnesota. But this latest is really out there -- Bachmann says we don't need pesky environmentalists like Nancy Pelosi around, because Jesus already saved the planet!

"[Pelosi] is committed to her global warming fanaticism to the point where she has said that she's just trying to save the planet," Bachmann told the right-wing news site OneNewsNow. "We all know that someone did that over 2,000 years ago, they saved the planet -- we didn't need Nancy Pelosi to do that."..........

you can feel racism oozing from the right (and parts of the left as well. don't be naive). i'm sick of the negative ads coming from mccain. i am more interested in what he CAN do for america than what he thinks his opponent can't do

Observers ask: What's with all the white women in anti-Obama ads?
Nick Juliano
The handful of white women fawning over Barack Obama in John McCain's latest attack ad hardly seems an accident, nor does the Republican's decision to include the line, "Hot chicks dig Obama."

Some observers say the Web video is a not-so-subtle attempt by McCain to play on white voters' racial fears, comparing the attack to the infamous "call me" spot attacking African American Democrat Harold Ford in his unsuccessful Senate run two years ago.

Predictably, conservatives are rushing to McCain's defense, saying that the accusations of racism coming from some on the left are far worse than the underhanded racism McCain is accused of deploying.

A McCain adviser tells ABC's Jake Tapper, who counts four white women professing their Obama love in the vid, that the campaign's intention was only to point out that "the kids think he's dreamy," apparently ignoring any suggestion of racial overtones..........

and their contracts. nothing we don't already know. i've already posted about them and the small business adminisration. and of course even though they may (OR MAY NOT BE) under investigation, sadly, most likely NOTHING will be done about them or TO them

Auditors Question Blackwater Contracts

by: Elizabeth Olson, International Herald Tribune
Washington - Blackwater Worldwide, the contractor whose provision of private security in Iraq has been under scrutiny, and its affiliated companies may have improperly obtained more than $100 million in contracts meant for small businesses, according to federal auditors.

A report by the Small Business Administration's inspector general, issued in July, found that Blackwater and its affiliates, including Presidential Airways, won 39 contracts in the fiscal years 2005, 2006 and 2007 despite
indications that the companies employed more than the number specified by the U.S. government. In some cases, the report said, the companies also had higher revenues than allowed for a small business............

..........When rival firms had challenged the 2006 contract for helicopter services to Presidential Airways on grounds that the company was too large, the airline provided data that 28 Blackwater-affiliated entities had a total of only 715 employees.

But the inspector general found that Blackwater had hired more than a thousand independent contractors and treated them as if they were regular employees, with scheduled shifts, for example, which called the size determination into question. The report also said the Small Business Administration should have "attempted to reconcile discrepancies" in the data Blackwater provided...........

Halliburton's Hidden Treuhand
by: Shelley Stark, t r u t h o u t
Halliburton takes advantage of a European loophole that lets corporations hide beneficiaries and assets.

Little is known of a customary European legal practice that offers corporations and individuals an opportunity to profit from assets while maintaining complete anonymity of the beneficiary's identity. This practice is referred to as "Hidden Treuhand" in the English language. The practice of Hidden Treuhand submits to legal local customs in Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg and Switzerland, but due to globalization, has moved beyond European borders via corporations and individuals, who put it to personal use...........

...........Given these attributes, it is alarming when a Hidden Treuhand is discovered in a subsidiary that is fully owned by Halliburton USA. Halliburton's Hidden Treuhand is evident in the firm's corporate records. Halliburton International GmbH was created in Austria in June of 1992, although another subsidiary, at the same address, was in existence in Austria since 1958. The new subsidiary, Halliburton International GmbH, has no apparent reasons for existing other than to house a Hidden Treuhand in its corporate structure, receive dividends from other subsidiaries and acquire other subsidiaries. This firm has no employees. It creates no income. Another company, Halliburton Company Austria GmbH, at the same address, could have equally performed whatever function this subsidiary has, but it has no Hidden Treuhand. The obvious conclusion is Halliburton USA needed a subsidiary with a Hidden Treuhand.........

she's right

go on maury if you want to continue to talk about this shite. sure it's somthing to be BRIEFLY reported. mention it ONCE. let it go. our men and women are dying in iraq. there is a war in georgia (which our king and his henchmen like cheney have the ENORMOUS BALLS to talk about and condem. of course it should be condemed BUT so should OUR INVASION AND CONTINUED PRESENCE IN IRAQ). on a 'news' show, TALK ABOUT STORIES OF SUBSTANCE. talk about stories with depth. then again, this is FAUX 'NEWS' we're talking about.

Fox anchor refuses to talk about anything but Edwards' affair

In the clip below, Fox News' Greg Jarrett deflects repeated attempts by U.S. World and News Report columnist Bonnie Erbe to direct the on-air discussion away from "watercooler talk" such as former Senator John Edwards' recently admitted affair with video producer Rielle Hunter to matters such as the Russians' invasion of Georgia.

"We have these huge stories going on like the one you're reporting in Georgia where you have both candidates, McCain and Obama, taking positions that the American public wants to know more about," Erbe said.

"You know," Jarrett responded, "his excuse for lying is absolutely stunning. He claims he denied the affair because the reporting by the National Enquirer was '99% wrong.' Well, so far, they've been about 100% right.

They were right about the affair, the pregnancy, the recent Beverly Hills late-at-night liaison, and what appears to be hush money that was paid to her. And until he takes a paternity test, he might still be lying, right?"

"He might be," Erbe responded, "and, Greg, let him go on Maury Povich and talk about it. They'll get great ratings. But the American public have told pollsters [that] this political season, they want substance...........

a giant WTF?

hawaii isn't a state? a presidential candidate can't visit his boyhood home without a fuss? a presidential candidate cannot visit his grandmother without a newscaster complaining? south carolina is a BETTER state than hawaii......because??????????????

Cokie Roberts slams Obama for visiting his Grandmother

From ABC's This Week on 8/10/08. Cokie Roberts: '...I know his grandmother lives in Hawaii and I know Hawaii is a state, but it has the look of him going off to some sort of foreign, exotic place. He should be at Myrtle Beach if he’s going to take a vacation at this time. I just think this is not the time to do that.'

While Cokie gives her best impression of a concerned objective observer(*cough*cough)...it's clear that she is trying a new spin on the 'Obama is an elitist' meme.

No mention of the fact that John McCain doesn't work weekends at all, and is no doubt relaxing with his young heiress wife in one of their at least seven homes, that they can easily get to in one of Cindy McCain's corporate jets................

Not So Set Free Soldiers
According to the LA Times, members of a Christian biker gang have run afoul of the law, by allegedly attacking members of the Hell's Angels.
Officers arrested eight members of an Anaheim biker gang and charged them with attempted murder this morning as part of an ongoing operation, authorities said.

The charges stem from a fight last week at a Newport Beach bar between two biker gangs, said Anaheim police Sgt. Tim Schmidt. The group arrested this morning are members of a Christian biker gang named Set Free Soldiers, and the victims are members of the Hells Angels, Schmidt said.

The operation, which included SWAT teams, began about 5 a.m. today, Schmidt said. No injuries were reported, Schmidt said, adding that officers served 11 warrants, all on attempted murder charges............

Paul Crouch
Trinity Broadcasting Network

Dear Pastor Crouch,

I know you're a big supporter of Phil Aguilar and his Set Free Soldiers Christian Motorcycle Gang. You've had him on your show, held fundraisers for him, and partnered with him on a couple of faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. It's too bad you closed them down. The aversion therapy approach you seemed to have used sounds interesting. I know I'd stop using crack if I had to blow a counselor to get it.
I imagine the news that police arrested Pastor Phil and six other Set Free Soldiers on murder charges must have been quite a shock at first, but I hope that after you learned more about the killings you understood them for what they were: battles in the war between good and evil.........

"Mr. President," she said, "want to?"

coincidentally, my friend mikey and i had an argument yesterday about beach volleyball. i have two very strong feelings about it
#1) it is NOT a sport. it's a beach game. a game. next thing you know, JARTS will be in the olympics
#2) when they (i am not sure who the 'they' is but i think the 'they' are people with penises) decided (and it's a rule. not optional) the WOMEN MUST WEAR BIKINIS TO PLAY FUCKING BEACH VOLLEYBALL (i have no problems with bikinis but it should be a CHOICE by the woman. what do men wear you ax? well, i'll tell you. FUCKING BAGGIES that's what). oh and there are regulation MEASUREMENTS ON THOSE BOTTOMS TOO.
anyway, i wake up to THIS picture

Pres. Bush declines to slap Misty May-Treanor's bikinied butt

President George W. Bush, who played baseball, coached Little League, owned a big league team and watches the Texas Rangers at every opportunity, can't stay away from the U.S. teams at the Beijing Olympic games.

Today, as the busy crowd over at our Olympics blog notes, after an hour's brisk bit of mountain-biking himself, Bush paid another visit to the American athletes, watching the women warm up for softball, regretting the disappearance of that sport from the next Olympics ("It's good for the world to have girls playing softball and these women are going to show young girls how to win") and trying his hand, so to speak, at volleyball.

Bush knuckled off a couple of lobs, but defending gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh gave the chief executive some pointers. Then after a good play, in the tradition of female volleyballers, May-Treanor turned, bent over slightly and offered her bikinied rear-end for the 43rd president to slap................
