Yet another great religious thinker has joined Pat Robertson in pondering the most important question about the tragedy in Haiti: whether or not the 7.0 earthquake that has killed thousands and devastated the country's infrastructure was the act of a vengeful God.
"Each time there is mass devastation due to acts of nature in areas of the world there is discussion as to whether or not these are acts of God’s judgment." writes Rev. Bill Shuler, pastor of Capital Life Church, on FoxNews.com. What makes God mad enough to level an entire nation? Whoring and boobs and drinking and witchcraft, of course. Continues Shuler:
When Katrina was flooded some people pointed to the decadent offerings of Mardi Gras and the French Quarters of New Orleans. When the tsunami hit southeast Asia people noted the severe persecution of people of faith in these nations. Haiti has been described, by some, as a place where the practice of witchcraft is prevalent....................

That's how Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert began his letter to Rush Limbaugh, in which Ebert rakes the radio host over the coals for his controversial comments about the Haiti earthquake.
Ebert, better known for his stints as co-host of Siskel & Ebert and Ebert & Roeper than for his political diatribes, criticized Limbaugh for suggesting earlier this week that donations made to Haiti through the White House Web site would be stolen by the administration.
"Would you trust the money's gonna go to Haiti?" Limbaugh asked caller Justin.
"No," Justin replied............

Update at 3:13 PM: American Express announced today that processing fees for any donations made to the 65 charities listed on this website between January 12 and the end of February will be rebated back to those charities.
Update at 6:44 PM: Visa announced this evening that it, too, will not apply fees to charitable donations related to the crisis in Haiti through February.
As a massive human tragedy unfolds in Haiti, relief organizations are soliciting credit-card donations through their hotlines and websites. About 97 percent of these donations will actually make it to the designated organizations -- but the other 3 percent will be skimmed off by banks and credit card companies to cover their "transaction costs."...........

Myth: The No-Fly list includes an 8-year-old boy.
Buster: No 8-year-old is on a T.S.A. watch list.
“Meet Mikey Hicks,” said Najlah Feanny Hicks, introducing her 8-year-old son, a New Jersey Cub Scout and frequent traveler who has seldom boarded a plane without a hassle because he shares the name of a suspicious person. “It’s not a myth.”
Michael Winston Hicks’s mother initially sensed trouble when he was a baby and she could not get a seat for him on their flight to Florida at an airport kiosk; airline officials explained that his name “was on the list,” she recalled.
The first time he was patted down, at Newark Liberty International Airport, Mikey was 2. He cried............

Republican candidate Scott Brown, running to fill Ted Kennedy's Senate seat, has a problem with more than just Martha Coakley. As Coakley's new ad points out, he also has a problem with rape victims.
From Sarah Palin denying funds to reimburse hospitals for performing forensic rape examinations to the 30 Senate Republicans who voted against allowing rape victims their day in court, the new Republican party tough-on-crime platform is, apparently, that rape victims ought to have rights, as long as they don't interfere with the rights of people in Wasilla who prefer lower taxes, businesses or super-devout (and, possibly, Deuteronomy-loving) Christians or .
Scott Brown falls into, at a minimum, the latter camp. In 2005, he sponsored legislation to allow doctors and nurses to turn away rape victims from Massachusetts emergency rooms if they objected to providing rape victims with emergency contraception. He said:............

Lawyers working to have Proposition 8 -- California's ban on gay marriage -- overturned as unconstitutional played a videotape of William Tam, a leading proponent of Proposition 8, arguing that allowing gay marriage would lead to the legalization of sex with children.
Opponents of Prop 8, who launched the constitutional challenge, are using Tam's comments "to buttress the contention that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional because it was fueled by deep-seated animosity against gays," reports the Associated Press.
Earlier this week, as the trial got underway, Tam asked to have himself removed from the case, in which he was acting as a defendant. (Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and state Attorney General Jerry Brown, who are named as the defendants in the lawsuit, declined to defend Prop 8, leaving the court to appoint Prop 8 backers as defendants.)...........

I hate Oprah. There, I admitted it. What kind of curmudgeon hates the loveable, exuberant Oprah Winfrey? After all, there are plenty of valid reasons to like Oprah. Her triumph over her tragic childhood is inspiring. She tackles taboo topics. And her philanthropy is unrivaled by any other celebrity
Yet -- at the risk of offending her mob of followers -- there are also plenty of reasons to criticize, mistrust, disapprove of, and, dare I say, hate the most powerful woman in the world. Here are ten.
1) Her idea of happiness involves a lot of spending
Oprah supports her image as a modern enlightened everywoman with a lot of self-aware, self-help, positive-thinking rhetoric. But at the end of the day, her biggest contribution to the self-improvement landscape is her promotion of retail therapy -- the idea that you can spend your way to happiness and fulfillment. Her "Favorite Things" can turn a company like Carol’s Daughter into an overnight success, and so retailers beg for her approval. Her Oprah store in Chicago sells the items she endorses, to go along with paraphernalia bearing her logo and even clothing she has worn. Go for your dreams! Buy an "O" notebook to write them in! Somehow, with a straight face, she makes the contradictory claims that happiness is available for everyone and that $25 pairs of socks are the way to get it. She’s an awfully expensive person to emulate...............

The only reason that Liz Cheney makes it on the news talk show rounds is that "she's Dick Cheney's daughter," and her political pressure group is little more than an excuse "so that there is some putative reason, other than being Dick Cheney's daughter, to put her on the TV," Nation Washington editor Chris Hayes told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow.
"There is no earthly reason that anyone should be listening to Liz Cheney on anything, other than the fact that she is the progeny of an alleged war criminal," Hayes told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Monday night...................

Women outnumber men here; you knew that. Women outnumber men in US colleges; you probably knew that, too. You might not have known that women receive almost 60 percent of university degrees in America and Europe combined. So who’s going to be running the show? You tell me.
More women have jobs in the US than men. The Bureau of Labor Statistics identifies job categories most likely to grow in the next decade. In 10 of the top 15 categories, women constitute two thirds of the workforce.
Witness the battle of the apothegms: A while back, economist Paul Samuelson (who died last month at 94) acknowledged females’ second-class socioeconomic status with the famous remark, “Women are men without money.’’ More recently, conservative agitator Christina Hoff Sommers has reversed the terms of trade. Boys, she has observed, “are tomorrow’s second sex.’’.........

Palin applied the epithet to criticisms by former John McCain campaign aides in a new book and a recent 60 Minutes interview; among other things, they said the former Alaska governor didn't know why North and South Korea are separate nations.
"Yes, that surprised me," Palin said. "I hadn't seen the 60 Minutes thing. I had been warned, you know, don't watch. It's a bunch of B.S. from [Steve] Schmidt and from some of those."
As for the Korea claim, she said: "That is a lie.".........

Weber, a waiter at Washington's iconic Palm restaurant, is a 20-year professional who prides himself on fast service, deferential courtesy and, most important, impeccable and unassisted memory. During a lunch rush last week, he smoothly kept track of the food and beverage demands of almost 20 diners, an ever-shifting matrix of steaks and salads, cocktails and Cokes, running credit cards for some, describing specials to others.

The one thing that Mr. Durant worries might spook a female guest is his most recent purchase: a three-foot-tall refrigerated meat locker that sits in a corner of his living room. That is where he keeps his organ meat and deer ribs.
Mr. Durant, 26, who works in online advertising, is part of a small New York subculture whose members seek good health through a selective return to the habits of their Paleolithic ancestors.

A British woman who claims she was raped in a Dubai hotel bathroom and went to report the incident to police has found herself and her fiance arrested for drinking alcohol and having premarital sex.
The 23-year-old had been celebrating her recent engagement to her fiance at the Dubai Marina's luxurious Address Hotel when she was followed into the bathroom by a waiter who allegedly proceeded to rape her while she was semi-conscious.
The next day, after discussing the incident with her fiance, they decided to go to the Dubai police. However, according to reports, the Dubai police were more interested in her sex life prior to the incident and her alcohol consumption. The couple were subsequently arrested. The waiter has argued that the sex was consensual but has still been charged with 'illegal sex'.............

Gilbert Arenas is already under investigation for possession of firearms in the District. NBA Commissioner David Stern suspended him indefinitely and the Washington Wizards organization appears to be distancing itself from him in all marketing and promotions. If Arenas weren't already dealing with enough, he now faces the watchful eye of his shoe company, Adidas, which released a statement on Friday that is putting the three-time all-star on notice.
"We are evaluating our relationship with Gilbert Arenas based on his recent conduct and subsequent suspension from the NBA," Adidas spokeswoman Lyn Famiglietti said in a statement.............Technorati Tags:guns, gun violence, gilbert arenas, adidas, lyn famiglietti, david stern, washington wizards, festival of lunacy
