Rep. Steve King slams hate crimes bill as protecting 'sexual idiosyncrasies'
By Michael O'Brien

The hate crimes amendment attached to a defense authorization bill is Orwellian and provides protection to "sexual idiosyncrasies," Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) asserted Friday.

King, a conservative Republican lawmaker, also charged that the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, which provided some impetus for hate crimes legislation, was not motivated out of hate against Shepard, who was gay.

"It takes us to a place in the law where we have never been before," King said in an interview on a conservative news radio program. "And that's the place where the hate crimes legislation gives us special protective status for sexual orientation and gender identity."

King said that the hate crimes bill results in a "pedophile protection act," and is meant to create "thought crimes" and protect "sexual idiosyncrasies."

yeah lowry it's a REALLY funny joke

to stick someone's initials on a target and shoot at it with an ak-47 (or any kind of gun). really funny. it's very mature too. that's that sort of person i'd want to vote for. someone with a great sense of humor AND mature. too bad i don't live in florida, huh?

Wasserman Schultz Rival Takes Aim At Rifle-Range Target Marked 'DWS'

A bunch of Broward County, Fla. Republicans convened at a local rifle range to talk politics and squeeze off a few rounds at bullseyes. One of them was a poster of a scary dude in a traditional Middle Eastern headdress -- another was human likeness with the initials of local Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Among the members of the Southeast Broward Republican Club shooting their handguns and AK's Robert Lowry, who is waging an uphill campaign to unseat the popular Democratic incumbent in a district where D's outnumber R's two-to-one.

Lowry's target -- a paper silhouette -- had "DWS" written on it, a stunt Lowry first called a "joke" and later a "mistake."..........

yes, someone has actually come right out and used the 'n' word. of course the very same person had a kkk mannequin in their restaurant (according to the reporter on the video). so to the best of my knowledge lanzo is the first. he will NOT be the last. all of those who like lanzo claim they're NOT racists will PROVE THEY ARE RACISTS

the dude says he's NOT a racist. that's my FAVORITE part. yup. the dude actually has the nerve to say he's a member of the naacp (if he IS and they allow his ass to remain a member that's CRAZY)

i have friends who own guns

if i am aware they DO have guns, i avoid visiting their homes. i feel strongly about this. i think the only people who should be allowed to own them and use them are the military and law enforcement (including park rangers and the like). nothing can convince me otherwise. i have seen death because of guns and i do not wish that on anyone.

that said, my thoughts and prayers go to the three children of meleanie hain.

Soccer Mom Shooting Highlights Danger of Gun Ownership

Freedom States Alliance Editorial, Oct. 9th, 2009

On September 11th, 2008, Meleanie Hain, did something that most mom’s don’t do. She openly carried a loaded Glock pistol to her 5-year-old daughter’s soccer game, claiming her right to protect herself and family as the key motivation. Doing so, launched her onto the national stage making her a poster mom for the gun lobby and open carry advocates alike.

Sadly, this past Wednesday night, Meleanie was shot and killed in her Pennsylvania home reportedly by her husband before taking his own life. The couple’s three young children were home at the time and ran from the house to notify neighbors of the shooting. Ironically, it was Meleanie’s law enforcement husband, Scott, who had taught her to shoot.

At the time of the murder-suicide, Meleanie was embroiled in a $1 million lawsuit she had filed against Lebanon County, Pennsylvania and Mike DeLeo, the sheriff who revoked her gun permit due to complaints filed following the soccer game incident. In the suit, Meleanie claimed her civil and constitutional rights had been violated.

This tragic shooting highlights the recklessness of myths being perpetuated by the gun lobby on several levels:....................

Under H.B. 1595, the state of Oklahoma is going to spend over a quarter of a million of its taxpayers' dollars annually to try to shame women into foregoing abortions. Isn't that special? It's almost enough to make one long for the martini-clouded days before Roe v. Wade, when women only had to deal with the life-threatening dangers of back alley abortions, without the additional stigma of government-sponsored Internet shunning.

The following is the posted information that the Gilead Oklahoma legislators believe will be generic enough to avoid that irksome HIPAA:

1. Date of abortion
2. County in which abortion performed
3. Age of mother
4. Marital status of mother
(married, divorced, separated, widowed, or never married)
5. Race of mother
6. Years of education of mother
(specify highest year completed)
7. State or foreign country of residence of mother
8. Total number of previous pregnancies of the mother..............

which i for one HATE in case you're wondering

it shites a big one
Culture news site Boing Boing recently tried a daring experiment — redesign its immensely popular website using some largely untested tools of the open web.

Unfortunately for Boing Boing, its ambitious plan resulted in a small disaster.

The team decided to use CSS3’s @font-face rule in its recent site redesign, which would enable it to use a custom font to display its text. However, far from delivering the look BoingBoing was going for, @font-face fell flat on its face; when the changes went live Tuesday, not only were the fonts Boing Boing wanted to use not legally available for the web, the font it settled on — specifically BPreplay — ended up looking terrible for most users.

The result was hordes of angry Boing Boing fans complaining that the new headline font was “ugly,” “an abomination” and “plain nasty.” Of course, the culprit wasn’t really the font, but rather how different it looked depending on which browser and operating system the viewer was using.........

In Saudi Arabia, a Campus Built as a 'Beacon of Tolerance'

High-Tech University Draws the Ire of Hard-Line Clerics for Freedoms It Provides to Women

Washington Post Foreign Service

THUWAL, Saudi Arabia -- On this gleaming high-tech campus edged by the Red Sea, May Qurashi crossed a barrier the other day. She played a game on PlayStation with some male fellow students. Her best friend, Sarah al-Aqeel, is also reaching for the forbidden. She's getting her driver's license.
Under Saudi Arabia's strict constraints, Saudi women like Qurashi and Aqeel may neither mingle with men nor drive. But at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, which opened last month on this sprawling site 50 miles north of Jiddah, men and women take classes together. Women are not required to wear traditional black head-to-toe abayas or veil their faces -- and they can get behind a steering wheel.

egypt?

it's causing an effing uproar right here in my chair. WTF????????????????

number one, it's made in china - they're not known for their safety measures. wtf is the 'blood' made out of? ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

number two, virginity ain't that big a deal. if you wish to be one, be one. if not, don't. easy as that. it should be YOUR choice though. either way. YOUR choice

‘Like A Virgin’ Kit Causes Uproar in Egypt

The Artificial Virginity Hymen Kit has been causing a legit uproar in Egypt.  What’s in the phony purity pack?  Why, a diaphragm that trickles a blood-like liquid, of course!  And it’s all in an effort to trick new hubbies into thinking their brides are carrying a V-card.

The kit is seen as a tool of empowerment to some, but Egyptian conservatives believe it promotes promiscuity and ultimately threatens Islam.  Members of the Muslim Brotherhood (who control 20% of the seats in Egypt’s parliament) have called for a ban on the kit and jail time for anyone that is caught peddling it..........

i was flipping channels

i got out of work early today (and i'm off tomorrow too!!!!) and i went to my pops house. he's not home (he's always dashing about) and i wanted to watch tv (i don't have one any more). in flipping the channels, i came across outrage on hbo

i knew about it, i had read about it. i knew they were 'outing' politicians who were ranting and raving and foaming at the mouth about how important the sanctity of marriage is. how faggots and dykes are the devil and will burn in hell

i really don't like the idea of outing. it's rather unsettling to me. so, i didn't plan on watching it. in flipping the channels, i saw it was playing right now. (we're 1/2 hour in right now). i am drawn to it. i can't switch it off. i'm impressed. i'm intrigued. it's a VERY good movie (so far - as i've not watched the whole thing yet).

In First Lady's Roots, a Complex Path From Slavery
By RACHEL L. SWARNS and JODI KANTOR

WASHINGTON — In 1850, the elderly master of a South Carolina estate took pen in hand and painstakingly divided up his possessions. Among the spinning wheels, scythes, tablecloths and cattle that he bequeathed to his far-flung heirs was a 6-year-old slave girl valued soon afterward at $475.
In his will, she is described simply as the “negro girl Melvinia.” After his death, she was torn away from the people and places she knew and shipped to Georgia. While she was still a teenager, a white man would father her first-born son under circumstances lost in the passage of time.
In the annals of American slavery, this painful story would be utterly unremarkable, save for one reason: This union, consummated some two years before the Civil War, represents the origins of a family line that would extend from rural Georgia, to Birmingham, Ala., to Chicago and, finally, to the White House............

GOP votes against measure to help victims of rape at govt. contractors
By Daniel Tencer
Political commentators are accusing Senate Republicans of hypocrisy -- and even outright support of rape -- after thirty of them voted against a measure to de-fund military contractors who prevent rape victims from seeking justice.
Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) introduced an amendment to a defense appropriations bill that would prevent the federal government from funding contractors whose employee contracts prevent workers from pursuing allegations of rape against co-workers.
The measure passed the Senate by a vote of 68 to 30, with all 30 'no' votes being cast by Republicans. Notably, 10 Senate Republicans voted for the measure, including all four female Republican senators.
Franken was inspired to push the amendment by the story of Jamie Leigh Jones, who was an employee of KBR -- at the time a subsidiary of Halliburton -- working in Baghdad's Green Zone when she was allegedly gang-raped by other KBR workers.
In a harrowing expose, ABC News recounted how Jones was locked in a shipping container, denied access to communication with the outside world, and told she would lose her job if she left Iraq or sought medical attention..............

Fox's Shepard Smith says public option isn't government takeover
By David Edwards and Stephen Webster
Fox News host Shepard Smith has broken with the ideology of his conservative network yet again.
Speaking with Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) on Tuesday, Smith took exception to the allegation that offering a public insurance policy through the federal government is somehow a "takeover" of health care.
"Over the last ten years health care costs in America have skyrocketed," he said. "Regular folks cannot afford it. So, they tax the system by not getting preventative medicine. They go to the emergency room in the last case and we all wind up paying for it."
He continued: "As the costs have gone up, the insurance industry's profits, on average, have gone up more than 350 percent. And it is the insurance companies which have paid, and who have contributed to Senators and Congressmen on both sides of the aisle to the point where now we cannot get what all concerned on Capitol Hill seem to believe and more 60 percent of Americans say they would support, which is a public option."..................

i had never heard of the indian sculpture park

i love the cool, the unusual, the surreal. this park sure looks like it's ALL of those things

Ireland's Indian Sculpture Park
From Independent.ie: “Since he saw Dresden being bombed as a boy, Victor Langheld wanted to know ‘why these things happen’. So at 25 he went to India to try to find the answer. The result is a unique sculpture park in Co Wicklow. Alison Bourke reports In a field, behind a raggedy hedge near Roundwood in Co Wicklow, live six giant granite Indian elephants, a fasting Buddha, and a huge forefinger. Set a little behind these, a ferryman claws his way out of a small pond, a maze leads towards enlightenment, and a ‘bell of forgetfulness’ stands waiting to be pulled. Set in front of the humble Irish countryside, each piece looks about as at home as if it had been beamed down by an alien spaceship.”.................

By Daniel Tencer

'God hates Diet Pepsi'
A group that advocates "traditional family values" claims it has the signatures of 500,000 people who have pledged to boycott Pepsi over what it says are the company's activities promoting gay rights.
The American Family Association, which boasts "2.5 million online supporters," "asked PepsiCo to be neutral in the culture war and not support the homosexual agenda," it said in a press release Tuesday. "PepsiCo refused. The company continues to give financial support to homosexual organizations."
The AFA launched its boycott campaign in January over PepsiCo's "continued support of same-sex marriage and homosexual advocacy." The group said it had received a "condescending letter" from Pepsi that "refused to address Pepsi's support of the homosexual agenda."
In particular, the AFA decried PepsiCo's donations to groups that funded the effort against California's Proposition 8 last year. The AFA said PepsiCo gave $500,000 to the Human Rights Campaign, which had worked to defeat Proposition 8............

human sacrifices?

alito really IS funny ain't he? the deal here is dog fighting is ILLEGAL in almost all if not all states. it's cruel and people who participate in it have something very wrong with them. people who watch cock fights (we even recently had a case of FINCH fighting here in connecticut) or even bull fights (fuck being a part of 'our culture') in my personal opinion have something wrong with them.

i just don't see how ANYONE can hurt an animal or watch an animal being hurt or pay to see which animal wins a fight. something isn't quite connected inside of someone who enjoys watching an animal (or human) suffer. (i'm going to address the bdsm s&m world in another posting when i'm good and ready. i have lots to say on that and i have the background to say it)

yes, i think hunting and fishing is wrong. yes, i think we shouldn't tear into the flesh of other creatures (i don't preach as a rule, except for now of course AND i don't think i'm  'better' than someone who DOES eat the flesh and bones of other creatures).

i'm not a judge (or lawyer obviously) but can someone 'splain to me, how come if dog fighting is illegal why a video of dog fighting (unless it was educational) as sport SHOULD be legal?
am i for free speech? of course i am EXCEPT when a person or animal is being abused or otherwise hurt against their will

Court Wary of Ban On Cruelty Videos
Animal Rights Law Finds Little Support

Washington Post Staff Writer

It has been 25 years since the Supreme Court decided that a category of speech -- child pornography -- was so unredeeming that it did not merit the protection of the First Amendment. Justices gave no indication Tuesday that they were ready to add another.
In an oral argument on animal cruelty that touched on bullfighting, cockfighting, fattening geese to make pate de foie gras and even a hypothetical "human sacrifice channel," the court searched for the limits of the Constitution's guarantee of free speech. The justices indicated that Congress had gone too far in its attempt to protect animals from abuse.
The Obama administration asked the court to reinstate a 10-year-old federal law that bans the production and sale of videos that show torture, mutilation and death of animals. The primary focus of the law was to ban "crush videos," which appeal to a sexual fetish by showing women stepping on or otherwise torturing small animals............

Xbox Signed by Sarah Palin Will Only Set You Back $1.1 Million (Plus Shipping)

by Jennifer Van Grove

eBay’s dmorrill321, otherwise known as David Morrill, is one determined seller.

After three separate attempts to list an Xbox 360 reportedly signed by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin were thwarted by eBay, Morrill is back at it for a fourth try. But this time, he’s dotting his “i”s and crossing his “t”s.
Morrill believes that he’s finally satisfied eBay’s requirements, and that the Xbox in question, which has a starting minimum bid of $1.1 million (plus $15 for shipping), will not be delisted again.

Buffy Sainte-Marie Native American Folk Legend
August 29, 2009 - In a career spanning more than four decades, Cree Indian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie has recorded numerous albums and written Oscar-winning songs. In the 1960s folk revival, she was a folk icon among Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. On her first album in 13 years, Running for the Drum, she expands on the inventive mix of Native American rhythms, electronica and folk music she began many years ago.
The second track of the new album, "Cho Cho Fire," is a driving rock song featuring a 30-year-old field recording.
"The Black Lodge Singers were at a powwow maybe 30 years ago," Sainte-Marie tells host Scott Simon. "My nephew went to the meeting in Saskatchewan and recorded a snippet of them when they were kids. And they have gone on to become one of the most beloved powwow groups in the world. I took a snippet of this 30-year-old cassette, and I embedded it into a new song I was writing called 'Cho Cho Fire.' ".............

When she's not making music, Buffy Sainte-Marie leads the Cradleboard Teaching Project, which provides Native American curricula for schools.

Scientist reproduces Turin shroud
The Shroud of Turin has been reproduced by an Italian scientist in another attempt to prove that the cloth bearing an image of Christ's face is a fake.
A professor of organic chemistry at the University of Pavia said he had used materials and techniques that were available in the Middle Ages.
These included applying pigment to cloth and then heating it in an oven.
Tests 20 years ago dated the fabric to between 1260 and 1390, but believers say it is an authentic image of Christ.
The linen cloth, measuring about 4.4m by 1.1m (14.4 by 3.6 feet) holds the concealed image of a man bearing all the signs of crucifixion, including blood stains.
The tests in 1988 have been repeatedly challenged, and scientists remain unsure how the image came to be on the cloth.
Scientist Luigi Garlaschelli, who is due to present his findings to a conference on the paranormal at the weekend, said many people believed that the shroud "has unexplainable characteristics that cannot be reproduced by human means"..........

Obama pwns Bush-Cheney on Iran;
First day of Talks Yields Significant Confidence-Building Steps

For 8 years, Bush-Cheney practiced what I call "belligerent Ostrichism" toward Iran. They refused to talk to Tehran. They wanted to ratchet up sanctions on it. Bush sent 2 aircraft carriers to the Gulf to menace Iran. Bush's spokesmen professed themselves afraid of Iran's unarmed little speedboats in the Gulf. Aside from issuing threats to attack and destroy Iran the way they did Iraq, Bush-Cheney had nothing else to say on the matter. During the 8 years, Iran went from being able to enrich to .2% to being able to enrich to 3.8%, and increased its stock of centrifuges significantly. Bush-Cheney gesticulated and grimaced and fainted away at the horror of it all, but they accomplished diddly-squat.

Barack Obama pwned Bush-Cheney in one day, and got more concessions from Iran in 7 1/2 hours than the former administration got in 8 years of saber-rattling.

In a Guinea Seized by Violence, Women as Prey
By ADAM NOSSITER
CONAKRY, Guinea — Cellphone snapshots, ugly and hard to refute, are circulating here and feeding rage: they show that women were the particular targets of the Guinean soldiers who suppressed a political demonstration at a stadium here last week, with victims and witnesses describing rapes, beatings and acts of intentional humiliation.

“I can’t sleep at night, after what I saw,” said one middle-aged woman from an established family here, who said she had been beaten and sexually molested. “And I am afraid. I saw lots of women raped, and lots of dead.”
One photograph shows a naked woman lying on muddy ground, her legs up in the air, a man in military fatigues in front of her. In a second picture a soldier in a red beret is pulling the clothes off a distraught-looking woman half-lying, half-sitting on muddy ground. In a third a mostly nude woman lying on the ground is pulling on her trousers...........

Right fears secret abortions for 13-year-olds in reform

By Alex Koppelman

Wednesday night brought the latest installment of everyone's favorite political drama: "Michele Bachmann tries to warn Americans about a threat that isn't real." Speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives, the Minnesota Republican warned parents everywhere that if Democrats' healthcare reform legislation passes, school clinics will become controlled by Planned Parenthood and turned into sex clinics that promote abortions free of parental consent for 13-year-old girls (video of Bachmann's comments is below).
Bachmann said:
And written in this bill is a provision whereby Planned Parenthood could become a proprietor for school-based clinics in every school across United States. These have been more accurately called school sex clinics ... And as a matter of fact, the bill goes on to say what's going to go on -- comprehensive primary health services, physicals, treatment of minor acute medical conditions, referrals to follow-up for specialty care -- is that abortion? Does that mean that someone's 13 year-old daughter could walk into a sex clinic, have a pregnancy test done, be taken away to the local Planned Parenthood abortion clinic, have their abortion, be back and go home on the school bus that night? Mom and dad are never the wiser...

Report: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was born a Jew
