U.S. Weighing Readiness for Military Action Against Iran

By Ann Scott Tyson Washington Post Staff Writer
The nation's top military officer said yesterday that the Pentagon is planning for "potential military courses of action" as one of several options against Iran, criticizing what he called the Tehran government's "increasingly lethal and malign influence" in Iraq. Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said a conflict with Iran would be "extremely stressing" but not impossible for U.S. forces, pointing to reserve capabilities in the Navy and Air Force.
"It would be a mistake to think that we are out of combat capability," he said at a Pentagon news conference. Speaking of Iran's intentions, Mullen said: "They prefer to see a weak Iraq neighbor. . . . They have expressed long-term goals to be the regional power." .......

what a wonderful invention, gauze that helps stop blood loss. AND the company that invented it is in MY state

Nanoparticles Help Gauze Stop Gushing Wounds
By Aaron Rowe
Medical gauze hasn't changed much since World War I: Medics can only stuff it into a gushing wound and pray.
Now chemists have infused cotton gauze with nanoparticles, giving it a vastly improved ability to halt blood loss -- even in tight spots like the neck or groin where it's hard to apply pressure. The new material could help save lives on the battlefield and in civilian situations, where trauma victims often bleed to death before they can be transported to a hospital or other medical facility.
"We are currently testing bandages because hemorrhage is a leading cause of death in military trauma patients," says Richard McCarron, head of trauma and resuscitative medicine at the
Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, Md. "The recent tests with Combat Gauze indicate that it decreased blood loss and improved survival." The lifesaving fabric McCarron refers to is made by Z-Medica, a medical products company based in Connecticut. According to Z-Medica CEO Ray Huey, the new product has already saved two lives. ......

..........................Ironically, the solution to the heating problem lay in replacing QuikClot with a material that has been used in medical tests for more than 50 years. The key ingredient in the new gauze is kaolin clay, which is often used to make pottery and happens to be rich in aluminosilicate nanoparticles -- which trigger blood clotting. ..............

Rush Limbaugh Calling For Riots In Denver
Talk Show Host Wants America To See Actions Of 'Far Left'

DENVER -- Talk show host Rush Limbaugh is sparking controversy again after he made comments calling for riots in Denver during the Democratic National Convention this summer.
He said the riots would ensure a Democrat is not elected as president, and his listeners have a responsibility to make sure it happens.
"Riots in Denver, the Democrat Convention would see to it that we don't elect Democrats," Limbaugh said during Wednesday's radio broadcast. He then went on to say that's the best thing that could happen to the country. Limbaugh cited Al Sharpton, saying the Barack Obama supporter threatened to superdelegates that "there's going to be trouble" if the presidency is taken from Obama.
Several callers called in to the radio show to denounce Limbaugh's comments, when he later stated, "I am not inspiring or inciting riots, I am dreaming of riots in Denver."
Limbaugh said with massive riots in Denver, which he called "Operation Chaos," the people on the far left would look bad..........

how much did YOU pay for gas this week?

i know it was about $.20 more than last week (here in the hartford area). how much higher will it go? putting THAT aside, did you know YOUR king george is ALLOWING THE OIL COMPANIES TO DECIDE THE POLICIES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? those that deal with countries who have committed act of terror against us (and our allies). do you care? are you outraged?

Libya Seeks Exemption for Its Debt to Victims
By ERIC LIPTON
WASHINGTON — One by one, top executives of American oil companies met privately over the last year with Libya’s leader, Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, often in his signature Bedouin tent, as they lined up contracts allowing them to tap into the country’s oil reserves. But now, the new allies are working Capitol Hill, trying to weaken a law that threatens those deals. The Libyan government, once a pariah, and the American oil industry have hired high-profile lobbyists, buttonholed lawmakers and enlisted help from the Bush administration, all in an effort to win an exemption from a law that Congress passed in January that is intended to ensure that victims of terrorist attacks are compensated.
The law allows victims of state-sponsored terrorism to collect court judgments by seizing foreign assets in the United States or money from those governments held by American companies doing business with them. If Libya loses a half-dozen court cases still pending, $3 billion to $6 billion could be at stake, according to lawyers’ estimates.....

Vt. soldiers can’t get home from Iraq
By Erin Kelly - Gannett News Service
WASHINGTON — Vermont soldiers who have completed their tours of duty in Iraq cannot get home because of flight delays caused in part by the recent bankruptcy of ATA Airlines, the Vermont congressional delegation said Wednesday.
Sens. Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch wrote to the Pentagon this week to try to help two Vermont soldiers whose parents contacted the lawmakers about their sons’ plight. The soldiers, whose names the lawmakers did not disclose for privacy reasons, are stuck in Baghdad.
“After completing their service to our country overseas, our men and women deserve a safe return home without delays,” the delegation wrote Tuesday in a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
The delays are partly the result of ATA Airlines’ announcement early this month that it was discontinuing service and filing for bankruptcy. The military had hired ATA Airlines to ferry troops between the U.S. and overseas bases. The Indianapolis-based airline had been contracted to fly 70 military charters through September, which Air Force Times reported earlier this month.
Still, the Vermont lawmakers said the Pentagon should be doing more to help service men and women find alternative flights home despite ATA’s woes and other bankruptcies and maintenance problems that have hit the airline industry in recent weeks.........

instead of REAL scientists

who have morals and value the truth, why doesn't king george and his court hire let's say former horse breeders and the like to fill the positions of 'epa scientists'? he's done it with other government positions. given them to his buds who are IN NO WAY QUALIFIED.

king george says we don't have to do ANYTHING about emissions until 2025. the part where our scientists have been told to lie or at best hide the truth, is not news. we've heard of that before. the EXTENT to which it is happening IS news. let's bring those weasels (king george and his court) up on charges. let's make them accountable

EPA scientists complain about political pressure
Survey shows hundreds of EPA scientists complain about political pressure

H. JOSEF HEBERT
Hundreds of Environmental Protection Agency scientists say they have been pressured by superiors to skew their findings, according to a survey released Wednesday by an advocacy group. The Union of Concerned Scientists said more than half of the nearly 1,600 EPA staff scientists who responded online to a detailed questionnaire reported they had experienced incidents of political interference in their work.
EPA spokesman Jonathan Shradar attributed some of the discontent to the "passion" scientists have toward their work. He said EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson, as a longtime career scientist at the EPA himself, "weighs heavily the science given to him by the staff in making policy decisions."
But Francesca Grifo, director of the Union of Concerned Scientists' Scientific Integrity Program, said the survey results revealed "an agency in crisis" and "under siege from political pressures" especially among scientists involved in risk assessment and crafting regulations..........

Senate Republicans Block Pay Disparity Measure

By Lori MontgomeryWashington Post Staff Writer

Senate Republicans yesterday blocked legislation to make it easier for women and others alleging discrimination to sue their employers over unequal pay, blasting the measure as an attempt by Democrats to score political points before the fall presidential campaign.
The vote was delayed until 6 p.m. so the Democratic presidential contenders could make it back after a day of campaigning in Indiana.
Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.) gave showcase speeches on the Senate floor.
Other Democrats spent much of the day hammering Republicans for opposing the measure, which aims to reverse a Supreme Court ruling from last May. "Politically, it's the dumbest thing they could ever do," said
Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.), who chairs the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Women "are a majority of the vote," he said. "Issues like this will matter in this election." .........

What the Family Would Let You See, the Pentagon Obstructs

By Dana Milbank

Lt. Col. Billy Hall, one of the most senior officers to be killed in the Iraq war, was laid to rest yesterday at Arlington National Cemetery. It's hard to escape the conclusion that the Pentagon doesn't want you to know that. The family of 38-year-old Hall, who leaves behind two young daughters and two stepsons, gave their permission for the media to cover his Arlington burial -- a decision many grieving families make so that the nation will learn about their loved ones' sacrifice. But the military had other ideas, and they arranged the Marine's burial yesterday so that no sound, and few images, would make it into the public domain.
That's a shame, because Hall's story is a moving reminder that the war in Iraq, forgotten by much of the nation, remains real and present for some. Among those unlikely to forget the war: 6-year-old Gladys and 3-year-old Tatianna. The rest of the nation, if it remembers Hall at all, will remember him as the 4,011th American service member to die in Iraq, give or take, and the 419th to be buried at Arlington. Gladys and Tatianna will remember him as Dad. ......

code pink, eve ensler, jodie evans, v-day (NO, NOT valentines day), hurricane katrina and a dream come true

Oh When CODEPINK Came Marching In (To New Orleans On Eve's V-Day)
by Linda Milazzo

For my entire life - years before Hurricane Katrina - I fantasized about New Orleans. I dreamed of being decadent in the French Quarter in clubs where my music heroes played. I dreamed of tasting the food, studying the architecture, hearing the accents, and being cradled in the arms of the city – in the cream, black, brown and white blended arms of the city. I wanted to earn my beads at Mardi Gras, search the bayous for magic, and be transformed beyond the boundaries of my physical world. But the rigors of my life quashed my momentum and I didn’t visit the one American city I'd always longed to see -- until just last weekend -- nearly three years AFTER the hurricane.
Thanks to the brilliant Eve Ensler, and our intrepid CODEPINK cofounder, Jodie Evans, my dream of seeing New Orleans finally came true. On April 11th & 12th, Eve Ensler created “V To The Tenth” -- the tenth anniversary celebration of V-Day (Ensler’s global movement to end violence against women and girls). Not surprisingly, Jodie Evans, a longtime friend of Eve, and proponent of women's rights, was a sponsor of the V-Day event. As a result, an international call went out to CODEPINKers to travel to NOLA to celebrate V-Day. Over one hundred men and women signed on. This time I HAD TO GO!! ........

one HELL of a letter to the editor (from rod driver - Rod Driver is a retired University of Rhode Island mathematics professor and a former state representative. )
and mr driver, i'll bet if you asked people on the street why we're in iraq, you'll get a LOT of 'because of 9/11' in there. people STILL actually believe that (less and less but they are STILL out there).

Rod Driver: A Web tour of Bush lies on Iraq
Rod Driver
SOME 33 PERCENT of Americans, according to polls, and most in Congress still support President Bush’s war in Iraq.
And I can’t blame them if they lack Internet access and depend on the mainstream media for news. They may still be unaware that (1) George Bush and his friends wanted war with Iraq years before 9/11 and (2) Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.
If you don’t have Internet access, please visit a library and go to the Web site of “The Project for a New American Century” (
www.newamericancentury.org). Still displayed there are letters written in early 1998 to then-President Clinton and congressional leaders urging U.S. “willingness to undertake military action” against Iraq. The letters were signed by Elliott Abrams, Richard Armitage, William Bennett, John Bolton, William Kristol, Richard Perle, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, James Woolsey and others who would come to power with George W. Bush three years later.
Upon first taking office, in January 2001, President Bush immediately sought reasons to attack Iraq (
www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2005-09-02-WMD-indepth_x.htm).
And one year after the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001 — with all but one of the hijackers being from Saudi Arabia —- George Bush started saying “Iraq is the central front in the war on terror.” Bush, Vice President Cheney, Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and others made similar statements dozens of times. ..............

Munitions maker accused of selling faulty grenades to FBI
Fed indictment says munitions maker sold FBI faulty grenades, bribed fed official, paid for strip club visit
A Georgia munitions manufacturer has been indicted on charges alleging it sold faulty "stun" grenades to the FBI, including one that injured three agents, federal authorities announced Monday.
Pyrotechnic Specialties Inc., chief executive officer David J. Karlson and three employees are charged with conspiracy, money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the government, the U.S. Attorney's office announced. Court appearances were scheduled Monday.
The indictment said the company contracted with the Department of Defense from 1996 and 2007 to manufacture diversionary grenades, also known as "flash bang" or "stun grenades." The MK141 grenade creates a bright flash and a loud noise to disorient an enemy.
The MK141 was developed by the Navy for use by Navy, Marine and Army forces, with a different model developed for use by civilian law enforcement agencies. The Navy contracts for the MK141 were valued at $15 million.
Four years ago, federal officials said, a design flaw was discovered in the Navy design of the grenade and the Department of Defense issued a stop-work order a year later so the flaw could be corrected.........

the only reason i can figure out

why in the world they WOULDN'T want to release the visitor logs if if osama his own damn self was listed in them. why else would they lie, conceal, stall and whatever the hell else they're doing? they're just visitor logs for goddess' sake. it's NOT like the conversations were taped or anything (is it??????????) hmmmmmmm
White House challenges court ruling on release of visitor logs
The Bush administration is challenging a court ruling that White House visitor logs are public documents, saying releasing the records would infringe on the separation of powers.
White House documents are normally exempt from public records laws, but a federal judge ruled in December that Secret Service visitor logs must be released. The court sided with a liberal watchdog group that sought records showing visits by prominent religious conservatives to the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney's residence.
The Bush administration appealed and lawyers were scheduled to argue the case Monday before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Government lawyers argue the president and vice president must be able to receive visitors and solicit advice privately. They portrayed the request for Secret Service records as an end-around, saying those same logs maintained by the White House would never be considered public documents............

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed/ Commentary by Chez Pazienza

Ben Stein has a message for Darwin: “Fuck you!”
It seems incomprehensible that Stein — former Nixon speech writer, game show host, eye drop pitchman and Neil Cavuto love interest — could find a way to further cement his reputation as the smartest dumb person alive, but, bless his heart, he’s done it. This weekend saw the theatrical release of a full-length documentary presented and narrated by Stein: Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed casts the man with the velvet monotone as a sort of Michael Mooresque troublemaker — a mischievous imp out to rankle the establishment and challenge the suffocating status quo, all in the name of getting to the truth that they don’t want you to know about.
And against which authority figure is Stein playing the role of the uppity insurgent?

..........On the April 18 edition of CNN's The Situation Room, during a report on the release of Sen. John McCain's tax returns, an on-screen chart showed McCain's income to be significantly lower than that of Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton when combined with the income of their spouses. However, the chart did not include any income that McCain's wife, Cindy -- who has not released her tax returns -- earned separately. As CNN political correspondent Dana Bash reported moments earlier of Cindy McCain, "Some estimates actually put her worth at about $100 million." While the chart was displayed, on-screen text read: "Comparing their wealth."........

Top Bush aides pushed for Guantánamo torture
Senior officials bypassed army chief to introduce interrogation methods

Richard Norton-Taylor
America's most senior general was "hoodwinked" by top Bush administration officials determined to push through aggressive interrogation techniques of terror suspects held at Guantánamo Bay, leading to the US military abandoning its age-old ban on the cruel and inhumane treatment of prisoners, the Guardian reveals today.
General Richard Myers, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff from 2001 to 2005, wrongly believed that inmates at Guantánamo and other prisons were protected by the Geneva conventions and from abuse tantamount to torture.
The way he was duped by senior officials in Washington, who believed the Geneva conventions and other traditional safeguards were out of date, is disclosed in a devastating account of their role, extracts of which appear in today's Guardian.
In his new book, Torture Team, Philippe Sands QC, professor of law at University College London, reveals that:

Clinton Slams "Activist Base of the Democratic Party"--Private Remarks Reveal Contempt for Dems
by Dean Powers

Almost 24 hours have passed since the Huffington Post published a damning audio of Clinton disparaging the “activist base of the Democratic Party,” and the New York Times has absolutely ignored it. By this time last week, the Times had written about 258 stories about Obama’s “elitist” views, as revealed in, like, 16 words in San Francisco.
Just after her defeats on Super Tuesday last February, Hillary
told the VIPs, "We have been less successful in caucuses because it brings out the activist base of the Democratic Party. MoveOn didn't even want us to go into Afghanistan. I mean, that's what we're dealing with. And you know they turn out in great numbers. And they are very driven by their view of our positions, and it's primarily national security and foreign policy that drives them. I don't agree with them. They know I don't agree with them. So they flood into these caucuses and dominate them and really intimidate people who actually show up to support me."...........

further delving into

the pentagon supplying talking heads to msm outlets. this time, it's MORE than television (i posted the link to the original nyt article yesterday)

Pentagon's Media Manipulation on War Extended to Newspapers
By Greg Mitchell
NEW YORK The New York Times today published a massive piece by David Barstow on how the Pentagon for years has secretly deployed a large crew of retired military officers to flood the airwaves – network and cable – to offer pro-war talking points to the unsuspecting viewers (see other E&P articles on this site). The focus is on TV, not print, but Barstow does reveal that the Times itself published “at least” nine op-eds by members of the Pentagon’s military/media cabal, and the Pentagon helped two of them craft a Wall Street Journal piece. What may go overlooked, however, is that all of the leading newspapers also frequently quoted the same cabal members, always in support of the war and the administration. This is not to place the papers in the same category as the TV outlets which used these people 1) regularly 2) gave them true prominence and never asked questions and 3) often paid them per appearance. However, it will be interesting to trace how these same “analysts” got the talking points delivered via newspapers, as well. What follows are just some examples that E&P has identified so far, which happen to emerge from the pages of The New York Times. Other papers widely quoted the retired military officers, but the Times' archives is easier to search for this purpose. And, in fact, most of the "analysts" identified by name in the Barstow article today were never quoted much if at all by the paper previously..........

Hormones Tied to Traders' Deal-Making, Study Finds

By Rob Stein Washington Post Staff Writer
It should come as no surprise that Wall Street traders work in a testosterone-saturated world, but scientists now have the first direct evidence that these Masters of the Universe may be bigger slaves to their hormones than anyone realized. By measuring young male traders' hormone levels as they brokered high-stakes deals, the researchers showed that they tended to make more money on days when their testosterone levels were high. That suggests that the hormone makes them more likely to take profitable risks, but also that it may play a role in pumping up economic bubbles.
The small study also found that traders' levels of the stress hormone cortisol tended to fluctuate with the volatility in markets, indicating that it could be a factor in making brokers more cautious during downturns, helping to puncture speculative bubbles. .......

U.S. Commanders Seeking to Widen Pakistan Attacks
By MARK MAZZETTI and ERIC SCHMITT
WASHINGTON — American commanders in Afghanistan have in recent months urged a widening of the war that could include American attacks on indigenous Pakistani militants in the tribal areas inside Pakistan, according to United States officials.
The requests have been rebuffed for now, the officials said, after deliberations in Washington among senior Bush administration officials who fear that attacking Pakistani radicals may anger Pakistan’s new government, which is negotiating with the militants, and destabilize an already fragile security situation.
American commanders would prefer that Pakistani forces attack the militants, but Pakistani military operations in the tribal areas have slowed recently to avoid upsetting the negotiations.
Pakistan’s government has given the
Central Intelligence Agency limited authority to kill Arab and other foreign operatives in the tribal areas, using remotely piloted Predator aircraft. But administration officials say the Pakistani government has put far greater restrictions on American operations against indigenous Pakistani militant groups, including one thought to have been behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
American intelligence officials say that the threat emanating from Pakistan’s tribal areas is growing, and that Pakistani networks there have taken on an increasingly important role as an ally of
Al Qaeda in plotting attacks against American and other allied troops in Afghanistan, and in helping foreign operatives plan attacks on targets in the West. The officials said the American military’s proposals included options for limited cross-border artillery strikes into Pakistan, missile attacks by Predator aircraft or raids by small teams of C.I.A. paramilitary forces or Special Operations forces. ..........

1. Major training center for terrorists2. Gives safe passage to a number of terrorist groups, including al Qaeda and the Taliban3. Was directly involved in financing the attacks of September 114. Its major military intelligence organization, ISI, deeply rooted in support for terrorist activities5. Was directly involved in training the terrorists involved in attacking Britain on July 76. Is the major proliferator of WMD to terrorist groups and countries extremely hostile to the US 7. Is the major supplier of weapons to North Korea, Iran, etc.8. Its ISI assassinates its own political leaders 9. Its ISI is involved in the assassinations of Western journalists, including reporter Danny Pearl.10. Is heavily involved in the drug trade, specifically the heroin trade.........

A PENTAGON CAMPAIGN Retired officers have been used to shape terrorism coverage from inside the TV and radio networks.

In the summer of 2005, the Bush administration confronted a fresh wave of criticism over Guantánamo Bay. The detention center had just been branded “the gulag of our times” by Amnesty International, there were new allegations of abuse from United Nations human rights experts and calls were mounting for its closure. The administration’s communications experts responded swiftly. Early one Friday morning, they put a group of retired military officers on one of the jets normally used by Vice President Dick Cheney and flew them to Cuba for a carefully orchestrated tour of Guantánamo.
To the public, these men are members of a familiar fraternity, presented tens of thousands of times on television and radio as “military analysts” whose long service has equipped them to give authoritative and unfettered judgments about the most pressing issues of the post-Sept. 11 world.
Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity, though, is a Pentagon information apparatus that has used those analysts in a campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration’s wartime performance, an examination by The New York Times has found............
