Pregnant women find abortion alternatives

"Creating a culture of life is more than just words."

Gov. Bobby Jindal visited northeastern Louisiana once again Wednesday, this time to sign a bill into law that would require certain signage in abortion clinics in addition to a website to inform women about abortion alternatives.

Jindal signed House Bill 636 by Rep. Frank Hoffman, R-West Monroe, into law Wednesday in front of a crowd at the First Baptist Church of West Monroe.........

and here's the REALLY GOOD part:

"When officers arrest criminals today, they are read their rights," he said. "Now if we're giving criminals their basic rights and they have to be informed of those rights, it seems to me only common sense we would have to do the same thing for women before they make the choice about whether to get an abortion."..........

here's a kick arse review of the transformers movie

REVIEW OF TRANSFORMERS 3: MACHINES ARE SUBJECTS, WOMEN ARE OBJECTS, AND FEMALE LEADERSHIP IS A JOKE

by Caroline Heldman

Cross-posted at Caroline Heldman’s Blog.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” the third installment in this $1.5 billion franchise that just set a new record for a Fourth of July weekend opening, follows what has become a Hollywood action movie tradition of virtually erasing women, despite the fact thatwomen buy 55% of movie tickets and market research shows that films with female protagonists or prominent female characters in ensemble casts garner similar box office numbers to movies featuring men.
Only two featured characters in the large ensemble Transformers cast are women, and none of the Transformers (alien robots, for the uninitiated) are female. And the two female humans consist of an unmitigated sexual object and a caricatured mockery of female leadership.
Let’s start with “the obje.................

you know what?

i'm NOT making excuses for women (and in this case a FIFTEEN YEAR OLD GRRRL) who do coke while pregnant or worse. they need help. they are actual living breathing BORN HUMAN BEINGS.

15-Year-Old Girl Faces Life in Prison for a Miscarriage? Why Conservatives Are Criminalizing Pregnant Women

Rennie Gibbs is accused of murder, but the crime she is alleged to have committed does not sound like an ordinary killing. Yet she faces life in prison in Mississippi over the death of her unborn child.
Gibbs became pregnant aged 15, but lost the baby in December 2006 in a stillbirth when she was 36 weeks into the pregnancy. When prosecutors discovered that she had a cocaine habit – though there is no evidence that drug abuse had anything to do with the baby's death – they charged her with the "depraved-heart murder" of her child, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Gibbs is the first woman in Mississippi to be charged with murder relating to the loss of her unborn baby. But her case is by no means isolated. Across the US more and more prosecutions are being brought that seek to turn pregnant women into criminals.

Missing: 163 Million Women

Ever wonder what happens when societies favor boys over girls?
Editors' note: Science magazine correspondent Mara Hvistendahl was a college student in China when she first saw an elementary school classroom where boys seriously outnumbered girls. Returning to China as a journalist several years later, she set out to investigate how, exactly, an estimated 163 million females came to be missing from the Asia's population—in South Korea, Vietnam, and Georgia, as well as India and China. The compelling result is Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys Over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men, a new book that both shows how Western organizations and scientists played a role in introducing sex selection to Asia and paints a bleak picture of societies where a dearth of women puts everyone at risk.
In the weeks since the book came out, Hvistendahl has been making the rounds, addressing the World Affairs Council, the World Policy Institute, and officials from the US State Department. New York Times columnist Ross Douthat (read our profile of himcited the book's revelations about sex selection to argue against abortion. Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins weighed in, too, claiming Hvistendahl was attacking science over advances in prenatal technologies—to which the author responded with a post suggesting that Dawkins hadn't actually read the book. But many who have agree that it's a thought-provoking look at a mounting demographic problem. The following excerpt is adapted from the book's opening chapter.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

wonder what he would say about abortion

An Anti-Abortion Ohio Legislator's Embarrassing Night Out

by Connie Schultz

Last Tuesday, Ohio Rep. Robert Mecklenborg -- a self-described "Catholic boy from the west side of Cincinnati" -- stood on the House floor to champion the most radical anti-abortion legislation in the country.
"We marvel, don't we?" he said, before voting for the "heartbeat" bill. "We marvel at the march of the penguins as they go to propagate their species under very, very difficult odds and conditions. We marvel at the leaping salmon as they return to their ancestral homes."
He also marveled over the mating habits of loggerhead turtles.
You're not alone if you don't quite see the parallel of wildlife to women's lives.
Not once have I ever looked at a woman of reproductive age -- including our three daughters and daughter-in-law -- and thought: Why, you're no different from fish, birds or reptiles...........

Zack sez, "Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of GORMENGHAST author Mervyn Peake -- not to mention the new illustrated edition of his work and the publication of the long-lost final volume in the series, TITUS AWAKES -- The Guardian has a special tribute with essays by the likes of Michael Moorcock and China Mieville. The pieces range from examinations of the themes and ideas in Peake's work to personal reminiscences about the author and how his work was rediscovered in the last years of his life."......................

Caged and doomed, boy leaves sad account of his life

By Bob Greene, CNN Contributor

Editor's note: CNN contributor Bob Greene is a best-selling author whose books include "Late Edition: A Love Story" and "Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen."
(CNN) -- The answers are starting to emerge. It is hard to imagine them being any more heartbreaking.
On May 22, I began a column by asking the questions:
"Why did no one miss him? Why didn't anyone seem to even notice he wasn't around?"
The body of a boy named Christian Choate, 13, had been found encased in cement and buried in a shallow grave in Lake County, Indiana. Police and prosecutors there alleged that he had been forced to live in a dog cage, and was kept naked except for a diaper. They alleged that his father, Riley Lowell Choate, 39, and his stepmother, Kimberly Leona Kubina, 45, had regularly beaten and kicked the boy, deprived him of food, and chained his hands to the top of the cage. They have been charged with murder, battery, neglect of a dependent and criminal confinement. They have pleaded not guilty; Riley Choate is scheduled to be back in court on Tuesday...........

Hitchcockian crows gossip about mean humans

Even after a year, a slighted crow may gang up with buddies to 'scold' you

By Stephanie Pappas, LiveScience Senior Writer

The common crow knows when you're out to get him — and he's likely to teach his friends and family to watch out for you, a new study finds.
In results that can only be described as Hitchcockian, researchers in Seattle who trapped and banded crows for five years found that those birds don't forget a face. Even after going for a year without seeing the threatening human, the crows would scold the person on sight, cackling, swooping and dive-bombing in mobs of 30 or more..................
