Medical research is part of the military's combat mission, too

Washington Post Staff Writer

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, AFGHANISTAN - On most days of his six-month deployment, surgeon David H. Zonies was lucky just to get outside and see the sun. Often, his only break from work was 30 minutes on the treadmill in the physical therapy department.
Every day, a half-dozen casualties arrived at the Joint Theater Hospital here, nearly all needing surgery in the next 24 hours, many missing limbs, a few barely clinging to life. The 36-year-old Air Force major was the "trauma czar." His job was to coordinate the patients' care and operate on about a third of them.
At the end of October, however, Zonies took two days away from the job. He exchanged blue scrubs for a brown flight suit, flew to Kandahar Airfield 350 miles to the southwest and presented two papers at a medical conference..........

In Ratatat's Dreams

By Maddie Oatman

The first time I saw Ratatat live, the energy of the music prompted me and my college friends to sing through most of the experience—not an unusual reaction for a concertgoer, except when you take into account that Ratatat's songs have no lyrics. A combination of rhythmic force and the lyrical personality of the central riff made us feel encompassed by a rock or hip-hop ballad—soon the entire room was shaking along to the beat............

WND on DADT: Officer asks to be relieved of command over repeal

by: Pam Spaulding

Tue Dec 28, 2010 at 15:45:36 PM EST

"I did not give up my constitutional rights and freedom of religion when I joined the military. I don't believe in subjecting myself to all of the behavior modification and sensitivity training. They're going to try to push the position that this is an acceptable lifestyle." -- an unnamed Army lieutenant colonel, who, according to WND, has "asked to be relieved of command rather than order his troops to go through pro-homosexual indoctrination."..................

Harry Potter Actress Refuses to Testify Against Family

LONDON -- The brother of a British Muslim actress who starred in the Harry Potter films pleaded guilty to assaulting his sister, after beating her, forcing her to flee her family home and calling her a "slag" for dating a Hindu man.

Afshan Azad, who played Hogwarts student Padma Patil in four of the movies, refused to testify Monday against her 28-year-old brother, Ashraf, 28, and her 54-year-old father, Abul. Both were found not guilty of threatening to kill her.

During the May 21 row at the family's home in Manchester, England, the 22-year-old actress' father allegedly shouted that he would murder the young actress. Scared for her life, she escaped out of her bedroom window and ran to the police, the Manchester Evening News reported.......

In ‘Daily Show’ Role on 9/11 Bill, Echoes of Murrow

And does that make that comedian, Jon Stewart — despite all his protestations that what he does has nothing to do with journalism — the modern-day equivalent of Edward R. Murrow?
Certainly many supporters, including New York’s two senators, as well as Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, played critical roles in turning around what looked like a hopeless situation after a filibuster by Republican senators on Dec. 10 seemed to derail the bill.
But some of those who stand to benefit from the bill have no doubt about what — and who — turned the momentum around...................
