Nikolas Kozloff: C Street Family -- Sex Scandals, Moral Hypocrisy, and Far Right Agenda in Central America
BUZZFLASH GUEST COMMENTARY
by Nikolas Kozloff
As the Republican Party implodes, the public is becoming aware of a secretive Christian society known as the Family or the Fellowship. The group was founded in 1935 in opposition to FDR's New Deal and its adherents subscribe to a far right Christian fundamentalist and free market ideology. A minister named Abraham Vereide founded the Family after having a vision in which God visited him in the person of the head of the United States Steel Corporation (no, I'm not making this up). The Family has a connection to house on C Street in Washington, D.C., known simply as C Street. Officially registered as a church, the building serves as a meeting place and residence for conservative politicians.
Few members of the fellowship talk about the group's mission. The organization organizes the annual National Prayer Breakfast that is attended by the president, members of Congress, and diplomats from around the world. Earlier this year, Obama presented his Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships at the event. According to Jeff Sharlet who wrote a book about the group, the Family's philosophy is based on "a sort of trickle-down fundamentalism," that believes that the wealthy and powerful, if they "can get their hearts right with God ... will dispense blessings to those underneath them." True believers in market orthodoxy, Family members think that God's will operates directly through Adam Smith's "invisible hand.".................
but neo-nazis. naw. we love 'em! they won't disturb a thing. they won't find it hard to serve next to people of color or people who are not of the same beliefs they are. and of course the people of color, the people who have a different belief system and even the people with brains and souls and real courage who are the same color as the neo-nazis - they will find it quite easy to serve side by side with them, right?
what's wrong with THAT picture?
p.s. who would YOU want covering YOUR back? timothy mcveigh or lt. dan choi?
US military: Gays not welcome; white supremacists 'OK?'
Recently, an Army National Guardsman and Arabic translator who openly challenged the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, was recommended for discharge by a military administrative board because he has publicly said that he is gay. Yet a watchdog group claims dozens of US military personnel have been spotted on a white supremacist social networking Web site in an apparent violation of Pentagon regulations prohibiting racist extremism.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a hate-group watchdog based in Alabama, will present a report to Congress today and urge them to investigate evidence "that racial extremists are infiltrating the U.S. military in order to ensure that the armed forces are not inadvertently training future domestic terrorists."
The SPLC also notes:
In recent months, SPLC investigators found approximately 40 personal profiles that listed "military" as an occupation on the Internet forum New Saxon, which is operated by the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement. One individual, who claims to be serving in Afghanistan, lists as his favorite book The Turner Diaries, which was written by neo-Nazi leader William Pierce. The book served as a blueprint for the Oklahoma City bombing by Gulf War veteran Timothy McVeigh. Another individual said he was about to be deployed overseas and was looking forward to "killing all the bloody sand niggers." Still another spoke of his hatred for undocumented immigrants......

U.S. Wiretaps Were of Limited Value, Officials Report
By ERIC LICHTBLAU and JAMES RISEN
WASHINGTON — While the Bush administration had defended its program of wiretapping without warrants as a vital tool that saved lives, a new government review released Friday said the program’s effectiveness in fighting terrorism was unclear.
The report, mandated by Congress last year and produced by the inspectors general of five federal agencies, found that other intelligence tools used in assessing security threats posed by terrorists provided more timely and detailed information. Most intelligence officials interviewed “had difficulty citing specific instances” when the National Security Agency’s wiretapping program contributed to successes against terrorists, the report said.............

Remember how I have often said that the extreme right confuses patriotism with nationalism and that the latter is the antithesis of democracy? Looks like some of these nationalists have gotten to take their hate on the road, under the banner of the US flag:
Favorite book: “Mein Kampf”
Favorite movie: the Nazi propaganda film “Triumph of the Will”
Interests: “white women”
Dislikes: “anyone who opposes the master race”
But there’s one other thing that dozens of members of newsaxon.org, a white supremacist social networking website, have in common: They proudly identify themselves as active-duty members of the U.S. armed forces.
Added Mark Potok, editor of the Intelligence Report, a magazine produced at the law center: “The Pentagon really has shrugged this off and refused to look at this in any serious way.”
On the newsaxon.org website, which Potok termed “a racist version of Facebook run by the National Socialist Movement,” many participants list their branch of service, base location and hometown on colorful pages festooned with Nazi art and Confederate battle flags. Some say they have served or will soon be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Several include pictures of themselves in camouflage combat uniforms."..........
here is my posting from july 6th
i had a couple of pictures up. the first was the growth, the second was right after it was removed (it was cut off with a scalpel)
it is squamous cell carcinoma. it's a very fast growing kind to boot. within the two weeks between it being removed and my second appointment, it grew back BIGGER. yesterday i had it removed by liquid nitrogen. it's somewhere between 400 and 600 degrees below zero. it stings a bit. nothing i couldn't handle. after a short while, it DOES hurt. it sort of throbs. i think it's actually your skin defrosting. again, nothing i couldn't handle (of course i had some stoli to help me)
the doctor (and later the nurse told me again), it will bubble, blister and OOZE. these are all good things (according to them). well here are two more pictures. one is the day before the cryosurgery and the second is the day after (today).
i know they're icky and disgusting. the after picture looks like there is an alien being growing on my arm
i am posting this in hopes
1) it will help someone else know what will happen when they go through this
2) because it's cathartic to me. to talk about it
3) because i need ideas on how i can repair my tattoo when the scar heals. (oh hell yeah i'm thinking about that ALREADY)
well i go back in two more weeks. if this didn't work i have to go into the hospital for surgery. they really dig deeply i guess. i'll just have to wait it out and hope and pray this does it.
i'll keep posting pictures between now and my next visit. sorry it's disgusting but i think it's important i do this.
the black box in the knitting fairy tattoo pictures is the effected area (so far. let's hope that's IT)
note: i think that tattoo saved my life. this is how i discovered i had skin cancer. one of her shoes just didn't heal. then it started to rise, like a blood blister but there was no blood (yeah, i poked it with a needle). finally i broke down and called a dermatologist. so now you know.
i DO know some civilizations (such as the mayans) did intentionally shape the skulls of their babies/children so they would look a certain way as adults.
could it be true? i'm thinking YES it could be. HOW could it be though? are we THAT insane?
this is fairly long. it's a must read though. it's about our country and OUR LIVES
Why the FBI Squelched an Investigation of a Post-9/11 Meeting Between White Supremacist and Islamic Extremists
By Mark Levine, AlterNet
The recent shooting at the Holocaust Museum serves as a stark reminder to us all that murderous racial and religious hatred still endures in America. One would expect the FBI to infiltrate and prosecute individuals and organizations that threaten domestic terrorist acts. But as this investigative report details, the large FBI bureaucracy, from the bottom to the very top, may well be more concerned with covering up its agents' own illegal misconduct than it is with actually protecting Americans from terrorist attack.
If the leader of the White Supremacist Organization was uncomfortable meeting the brown-skinned supporter of the Islamic terrorist group in Florida, he tried not to show it. After all, the two men had a common agenda, and in the up-coming War Against the Jews, the Islamic Extremist had agreed, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." It was January 2002 -- a mere four months after 9-11 -- and both men were intent on following up on that deadly terrorist attack with a "summit meeting" to discuss how their respective organizations could cement an alliance to cause more death and destruction in the United States and around the world.
It was the first meeting between the men. To break the ice, the White Supremacist mentioned his admiration for Adolf Hitler. The Islamic Extremist readily agreed that he shared that admiration and looked forward to joining with the White Supremacist in the goal of fomenting civil war in the USA. They both approved of suicide bombings. And they discussed how the White Supremacist Organization could launder money and provide financial assistance to the Islamic Terrorist Organization, which had already received arms shipments from Iran...........

Pool accused of turning away minority kids
Swim club denies any wrongdoing in statement on Web site
HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. - In a statement posted on its Web site Thursday afternoon, a swim club said accusations that it discriminated against a day camp for minority children were untrue. The Valley Club doesn't have the capacity to deal with outside groups and returned money to more than one day camp, the club said.
Alethea Wright, director of Creative Steps, a summer camp for minority children, said the organization paid for weekly swim time at the pool. But during a trip there June 29 some of the children said they heard people asking what "black kids" were doing at the club, Wright said...........

Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., issued a statement calling the allegations "extremely disturbing" and said he was looking into the matter........
...........Private school lends a hand
Girard College, a private Philadelphia boarding school for children who live in low-income and single-parent homes, has offered to host the children for the summer, and a meeting was scheduled later Thursday to work out the details. "We had to help," admissions director Tamara Leclair told WCAU, a NBC affiliate station. "Every child deserves an incredible summer camp experience."................
yeah right, like that would have EVER happened with my parental units (not a chance. they taught me to stand up for myself. be myself. accept my mistakes. own up to my mistakes. correct my mistakes). my father didn't make a fortune in the casino bid-nez either.
who is worse? someone who touts the 'sanctity' of marriage then knocks boots with a babe who has been a neighbor AND a family 'friend' AND has daddy pay her and her husband off OR the cuckolded husband leaking the story to the media? answer is i have NO idea who is worse. they're all worse. they're all OFF MY CHRISTMAS CARD LIST
Senator’s Parents Gave Mistress Thousands
By DAVID STOUT
WASHINGTON — Senator John Ensign’s wealthy parents gave almost $100,000 to his former lover and her family, ostensibly out of concern for their welfare and as part of a “pattern of generosity,” his lawyer disclosed Thursday. A statement by his lawyer, Paul Coggins, on behalf of the Mr. Ensign, a Republican from Nevada, said that in April 2008 the senator’s parents each gave $12,000 apiece to Cindy Hampton, her husband, Doug, and two of their children in the form of a single check for $96,000...........

Australian govt memo, 1968: Women become "spinster battle axes;" "men usually mellow"

Nat sez, "Spinster battlaxe Skud passed me this 1968 minute from the Director of the Trade Commissioner of Australia explaining why women are ineligible for postings. It's a jawdropalicious blast from the sexist past:
Even conceding these points, a woman could not stay young and attractive for ever, and later on could well become a problem.

i think they stepped in it this time. changing the COMPLEXION and all
By David Edwards and Daniel Tencer
A swimming club in suburban Philadelphia called the police on a Fox television crew attempting to report on allegations the club had rejected inner-city children because of the color of their skin.
More than 60 children enrolled in day-care in the basement of a Northeast Philadelphia elementary school were told to pack up and not return, after the Valley Swim Club in Montgomery County accused them of changing the “complexion” and “atmosphere” of the club.
Most of the children enrolled in the day care are black or Hispanic.
When Fox’s Philadelphia affiliate showed up at the club, “we were ordered off, we were told it’s a private club and we’re not welcome,” Fox reporter Claudia Gomez said.
The Valley Club’s president, John Duesler, said in a statement: “There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club.”
One day-care attendee told the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia that he had overheard parents at the club complaining about the new children’s race.............
Swim Club Accused Of
Officials at a daycare accuse a club in Montgomery County of discriminating against the minority kids in their program.
They're inner city children spending the summer in the basement of a Philadelphia elementary school.
But every Monday afternoon, they were supposed to get a welcome break at the Valley Club in Huntingdon Valley, where they'd get to swim for an hour and a half.
But after only one Monday, the plan derailed.
"I get a phone call from the board chair saying, you're no longer going to be able to swim here,” Alethea Wright of Creative Steps, Inc.
She says the board president of the Valley Club didn't explain why. But she says the reason was obvious to her.
"The other members were taking their children out while our children were there swimming,” Wright said.
But she couldn't ignore it after several black children in her daycare program allegedly overheard a white mother complaining.
The daycare had paid for the entire summer upfront, but they got their check for $1,950 back in full..................

Here is Destino, the collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dalí. Production began in 1945 and the film didn't premier until 2003. Apparently, it will finally see an official home DVD release in 2010 along with a documentary about the two artists' history together. Destino (Wikipedia) (Thanks, Kirsten Anderson!)
Abusive "coal-thugs" try to break up anti-mountaintop-removal festival
Posted by Cory Doctorow,
Apollo sez, "This is a YouTube video of some West Virginia pro-coal thugs (dressed in Massey issued uniforms) crashing the peaceful 23rd annual Mountain Keepers Festival. The festival is a gathering of West Virginians who live in the hollows that are being destroyed by Mountaintop Removal mining, and their fellow advocates from all over the country. At one point the most vile of the thugs threatens a man and his child verbally and with a throat slitting gesture. Simply appalling."

Refers to nonexistent ‘department of law’
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has a new plan for dodging “spurious” ethics charges — if winning the White House is considered a plan.
In an ABC News interview released Tuesday, the onetime Alaska commander-in-chief signaled that if she succeeded in a presidential run, life would get easier.
“I don’t think it will be the day after day after day of ethics violation charges that are frivolous, that are ridiculous,” she quipped. “I think on a national level your department of law there in the White House would look at this, the things we have been charged with, and automatically throw them out, not make somebody hire their own personal attorney to get out there and fight.”.........

Audra Shay, Vice Chair of the Young Republicans, replied to a comment on her Facebook page which declared the “need to take this country back from all of these mad coons” with “You tell em Eric! lol.”
The remark was caught by John Avlon at The Daily Beast. A screenshot of the Facebook comment can be seen here. Avlon says that Shay is the most likely candidate to be elected chair of the Young Republican group.
“On Wednesday, Shay—a 38-year-old Army veteran, mother, and event planner from Louisiana who has been endorsed by her governor, Bobby Jindal—was holding court on her Facebook page, initiating a political conversation by posting that ‘WalMart just signed a death warrant’ by ‘endorsing Obama’s healthcare plan,’” Avlon notes. “At 1:52, a friend named listed as Eric S. Piker, but whose personal page says his actual name is Eric Pike, wrote ‘It’s the government making us commies… can’t even smoke in my damn car… whats next they going to issue toilet paper once a month… tell us how to wipe our asses…’”
Piker then posted again. “Obama Bin Lauden [sic] is the new terrorist,” he penned. “Muslim is on there side [sic]… need to take this country back from all of these mad coons… and illegals.”
In reply, Shay wrote: “You tell em Eric! lol.”.............

Carl's Jr. seeks "Hot Chicks Eating Burgers" on craigslist
Samhita linked to this campaign briefly last week, but we've got more to say about this.
That's right, folks. A reader alerted us to this craigslist ad casting call from Carl's Jr. and Hardee's burgers telling women that they could win $1,000 and a trip to Vegas if they submit a video of themselves eating one of their burgers and is "hot" enough for their marketing campaign.
Carl's Jr.'s tagline is literally "More than just a piece of meat." So let's send them an email letting them know what that actually means to us. Or perhaps we can think of a good counter-campaign by sending them videos of what we really think of Carl's Jr. Any bright ideas?.........

And this year's Prometheus Hall of Fame winner was Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. These books and these writers are all incredibly humbling company to find oneself among. .........

Insane Sarah Palin, Late At Night On July 4, Threatens To Sue Entire Internet, Via Twitter
How did you spend the Fourth of July? Maybe having a BBQ with friends and family, watching a fireworks show, and generally enjoying a happy patriotic holiday? Batshit-insane American Quitter Sarah Palin ended her own special “Independence Day” by posting a series of desperate grammar-challenged nonsense and vicious threats on her Facebook and Twitter pages. Really.
(Also: Sarah, you idiot, when do you plan to give up your Twitter name AKGovSarahPalin? Because, you know, you just quit being governor ….)
It is unwise to dwell on the past or be obsessed with an unknown future, but we should all appreciate the wonderful present — a present in which Sarah Palin is nothing more than a punchline. Because, had things gone very differently in November, this dangerous delusional numbskull would’ve been just an Ambien overdose away from the presidency..........
and i felt it appropriate for me to post it. i discovered i had cancer (i was in such a state of shock i didn't write down exactly what the doctor said). you may have looked at the pictures of my newest knitting fairy tattoo, which i posted not too long ago. well one of her shoes not only didn't heal, the skin started to raise. after a couple of weeks (3 actually), i called to make an appointment with a dermatologist. well the first one i called couldn't see me till december (eff that, what if i was stupid enough to wait???????). the second could see me in about a month. i opted for that one. i went to see him and he said to me, 'that's cancer'. that was THE LAST thing i expected. i though perhaps i was allergic to the color ink they used OR an ingrown hair or two. i NEVER EVER though cancer. never. i have to go back this thursday and get more taken off.
(oh, start thinking about how i can fix her up when the wounds heal. i really am going to get the scars covered in more ink)
pics are sort of disgusting but i wanted to chronicle my ordeal. when i get the exact results from the biopsy i'll post exactly what it is. like i said, i was in SUCH a state...........

Sunscreen's Shady Business
Are you getting burned by sunny claims?
"DON'T BE A PALEFACE!" That was the slogan for an iconic 1958 Coppertone ad—the one with the frisky puppy tugging at the pigtailed girl's bathing suit, revealing her perfect tan line. Not anymore. In the past 30 years, the incidence of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, has jumped 159 percent, and in just the past decade, the number of Americans diagnosed with skin cancer has increased by nearly a third. Epidemiologists blame several factors—ozone depletion, migration to the Sunbelt, the popularity of tanning beds and tropical vacations. Whatever the reason, the skin-care industry hasn't missed a beat: Transforming suntan lotion into sunscreen and sunblock, it's gone from promising sun worshippers enviably rich tans to guaranteeing solarphobes no color at all.So if you've ventured into the sun protection aisle lately, you've probably noticed a distinct shortage of fun in the sun. SITTING at a Father’s Day barbecue on the day before a sold-out three-night stand at the Wiltern Theater here, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco was talking about his 13-year-old son, Spencer, a drummer in a rock band called the Blisters. Over the past five years Mr. Tweedy, the son of a railroad worker from St. Louis, whose toes touched bottom on the way to rock greatness, had come to an understanding about himself that applies to Spencer too: “I told him: ‘You are not a rock star. You get to do rock star things.’ ”In his button-down shirt and with a Brewers cap hiding a mop of hair while he talked in a borrowed office a few steps from a friend’s party, he couldn’t have seemed less the alt-rock god. Still, it took him some painful years to find a place to stand between the nice guy at the barbecue and the bandleader at the Wiltern. .........................
