Accounts of Prosecutors' Dismissals Keep Shifting

By Dan Eggen Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, March 17, 2007; Page A01
More than two weeks after a New Mexico U.S. attorney alleged he was fired for not prosecuting Democrats, the White House and the Justice Department are still struggling to explain the roles of President Bush, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and other key officials in the dismissals of eight federal prosecutors last year.
Yesterday, the White House retreated from its four-day-old claim that former counsel Harriet E. Miers started the process two years ago by proposing the firing of all 93 U.S. attorneys.

"It has been described as her idea . . . but I don't want to vouch for origination," press secretary Tony Snow said. "At this juncture, people have hazy memories.".........

since it IS st patrick's day

it wouldn't be complete without a unicorn story!

The unicorn was driving, drunk tells police

A man accused of drunk-driving and crashing his truck into a lamp post told police a unicorn had been at the wheel when it careered off the road, local media reported Wednesday.
Phillip Holliday, 42, pleaded not guilty to felony charges of criminal endangerment and drunk-driving when he appeared before a court in the western state of Montana on Tuesday, the
Billings Gazette reported.
The court heard that Holliday has five previous convictions, four felonies, 35 misdemeanors and 53 traffic violations -- including 28 convictions for driving with a suspended license.
His March 7 crash in Billings was witnessed by two police officers, said prosecutor Ingrid Rosenquist, but Holliday still insisted a unicorn was driving when he slammed into the street lighting, shortly after jumping a red light.............

the unicorn song (for BETH)

words and music Shel Silverstein, new verse Andrew McKee
A long time ago, when the Earth was green There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen They'd run around free while the Earth was being born And the loveliest of all was the unicorn
There was green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born The loveliest of all was the unicorn
The Lord seen some sinning and it gave Him pain And He says, "Stand back, I'm going to make it rain" He says, "Hey Noah, I'll tell you what to do Build me a floating zoo, and take some of those...
Green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born Don't you forget My unicorns
Old Noah was there to answer the call He finished up making the ark just as the rain started to fall He marched the animals two by two And he called out as they came through Hey Lord,
I've got green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn I just can't find no unicorns"
And Noah looked out through the driving rain Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games Kicking and splashing while the rain was falling Oh, them silly unicorns
There was green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees Noah cried, "Close the door because the rain is falling And we just can't wait for no unicorns"
The ark started moving, it drifted with the tide The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried And the waters came down and sort of floated them away That's why you never see unicorns to this very day
You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born You're never gonna see no unicorns

they don't give a shite

they never DID give a shite, nor will they EVER give a shite. lies lies more lies then coverups. yeah, they're being questioned. perhaps a head or two will roll over this. BUT the heads that roll will be scapegoats. NOT the REAL ones responsible for the OUTING OF A COVERT CIA AGENT (which of course is TREASON)

White House official: No probe launched into Plame leak

Andrew Bielak

In testimony given today before the house oversight committee, James Knodell, Director of the Office of Security at the White House, revealed that the the administration had never launched an internal probe to determine the source for the outing of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame in 2003. In addition to revealing a deep reluctance on the part of the administration in determining the party responsible for the leak, Knodell's testimony directly contradicted a prior statement from President Bush promising a full internal probe.
Ms. Plame Wilson, who in testimony earlier today confirmed her status at the time of the scandal as a covert CIA official and struck down assertions that she designed her husband's 2002 mission to Niger, told the committee, "My name and identity were carelessly and recklessly abused by senior officials in the White House and State Department. I could no longer perform the work for which I had been highly trained."...........

............"Also, [the] third panel featuring Victoria Toensing, apologist for White House leaks, was fascinating as her previous claims that 'Plame was not covert' and that 'she didn't serve overseas with five years prior to the leak' had been demolished by Plame-Wilson's earlier testimony," Friedman added. "She attempted to mitigate throughout her testimony that Plame-Wilson was not covert 'under the provisions of the statute.'".........

snoop, NO NOT THAT one

the wire is the most amazing show on television. season four is finished and they say season five (which just started filming) will be the last. that is a tragedy. all four seasons were different. all four focused on a different element of baltimore. from drug dealers to longshorement. the constant theme is the PO-LEESE.

snoop is an amazing character. you can tell she (at first i thought snoop was a male. it's very difficult to tell she's a woman) came up through the streets and not some performing arts high school. she is a stone cold killer on the show working her magic (chill inducing) with a NAIL GUN.

turns out snoop did some time. she did some time for killing another woman. snoop was 14 at the time. FOURTEEN. talk about tragedy.

i wasn't there. i don't know what went down. i do know my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of kia toomer.

i also know 'the wire' is the absolute best there is out there.

BALTIMORE
The thing is, Felicia "Snoop" Pearson's life wasn't supposed to look like this. At all. Some folks think it shouldn't look like this. An eye for an eye, and all that that entails.

But on rare occasions, fate decides to indulge in a little rearranging of centrifugal forces, turning lives inside out and granting the object of its attention a massive, cosmic do-over.............

..........Four years out of prison, age 24, Snoop wasn't living a life lined up along the straight and narrow. She was back in the game, peddling drugs, running with the rough boys, an undersize woman with an oversize swagger. Not much good was coming her way.
Until the night that Snoop spotted "Omar," the gay thug on the acclaimed HBO show "The Wire," at a club. Or maybe he spotted her. Accounts differ............

"They saved my life," Felicia "Snoop" Pearson says of the producers of HBO's "The Wire" who hired her to play a hardened street character very much like, and named after, her.

NOT to make light of this really (the death of daniel pearl was horrific and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends). but my point is mohammed DID brag about his roles in terrorist activities BEFORE being tortured. i would confess to just about anything while being tortured as i'm sure most everyone else would as well.

i am sure he had a hand in many evil activities but we ALREADY knew this.

Detainee says he beheaded U.S. reporter

By Carol Rosenberg
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - Khalid Shaikh Mohammed confessed to murdering Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, personally slicing off Pearl's head and holding it up for a video that appeared on the Internet, according to a revised transcript of a hearing held last weekend at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
"I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan," Mohammed told a panel of military officers who'll decided whether he should be held as an enemy combatant. "For those who would like to confirm, there are pictures of me on the Internet holding his head."
Pentagon officials had deleted Mohammed's description of Pearl's death from a transcript of the hearing that was originally released Wednesday. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the deletion had been made to give officials time to brief Pearl's family. Once that had been done, a revised transcript was posted on the Defense Department's Web site, defenselink.mil. ...........

Kucinich: 'Impeachment may well be the only remedy which remains to stop a war of aggression against Iran'

Ron Brynaert

During a speech on the House floor on Thursday, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) declared that "impeachment may well be the only remedy which remains to stop a war of aggression against Iran." The 2004 presidential candidate, who is running again in 2008, told RAW STORY that his House floor statement "speaks for itself."
"This House cannot avoid its constitutionally authorized responsibility to restrain the abuse of Executive power," Kucinich said on the floor today. "The Administration has been preparing for an aggressive war against Iran. There is no solid, direct evidence that Iran has the intention of attacking the United States or its allies."..............

Pentagon Issues Dire Look At End of '06 in Iraq

By Ann Scott Tyson Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, March 15, 2007; Page A15
The Pentagon yesterday released its bleakest assessment of Iraq yet, reporting record levels of violence and hardening sectarian divisions in the last quarter of 2006 as rival Sunni and Shiite militias waged campaigns of "sectarian cleansing" that forced as many as 9,000 civilians to flee the country each month.
Weekly attacks in Iraq rose to more than 1,000 during the period and average daily casualties increased to more than 140, with Iraqi civilians bearing the brunt of the violence -- nearly 100 killed or wounded a day, according to statistics in the Pentagon's latest congressionally required quarterly report on security in Iraq.................

for NO legal, legitimate or MORAL reason. we destroyed families, land, businesses. we are ABANDONING those that have helped our military members (i was dumbfounded when i watched 60 minutes this weekend and saw how we were not taking care of those assisting our miltary as translators. the iraqis that have helped us are as good as dead and begging us to help them. take them to america. we of course are spitting in their faces.). Left Behind

Scott Pelley On The Plight Of Iraqis Who Helped The U.S.

(CBS) When U.S. troops invaded Iraq, they had a major handicap – they didn’t speak the language. There would have been no progress, and likely more American dead, had it not been for Iraqi citizens who volunteered to serve our armed forces as translators. Many thousands of Iraqis believed in the cause. They signed on as drivers, construction workers and office workers. But now they and their families are being hunted down by insurgents bent on killing them for collaborating. No wonder many are fleeing Iraq, desperate for asylum. But as they appeal to the U.S., many feel they’re being left behind. .......

A humanitarian crisis of historic proportions

Nearly 2 million Iraqis have fled to Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey—another 1.8 million have been displaced within their country's borders.

The humanitarian crisis that didn’t evolve as expected at the start of the Iraq war is now in full swing, says the International Rescue Committee, after surveying needs in Syria and Jordan, where desperate Iraqis have taken refuge from the chaos at home.

Iraqi Refugees Overwhelm Syria
Migrants Who Fled Violence Put Stress on Housing Market, Schools

By Scott Wilson Washington Post Foreign Service Thursday, February 3, 2005; Page A18
ALEPPO, Syria -- Sabbah Zaker had a small, sturdy construction company in the Iraqi city of Mosul, and although he did not agree with the U.S. invasion, he accepted a $10,000 contract last summer to renovate schools and health clinics across his ethnically mixed home town. A few months later, his name began appearing on the walls of his neighborhood as a warning from insurgents not to cooperate with the Americans. .............
.......We cannot continue like this," said Abdelhamid Ouali, the representative for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Syria. "The situation is terrible, and we are obliged to do something."
Hoping to help the fleeing Iraqis without encouraging their flight, the U.N. agency arranged "temporary protection status" that prevented the Iraqis from being deported but did not trigger the financial aid and relocation assistance that goes to official refugees. Almost two years ago, the agency set up large tent cities and health clinics for thousands of people. The facilities were mothballed when the mass exodus did not immediately materialize. .......

Violence, Poverty Underscore Story of Iraqi Refugees in Jordan

by Jon Elmer
For those who have fled the chaos of home to settle indefinitely in Amman, making do and maintaining hope of someday returning to a peaceful Iraq are elusive ways of life.
Amman; July 22, 2005 – Hisham Jamil is unequivocal when asked why he and his wife have chosen a life of unemployment in a foreign country over the life they built together in Baghdad.
"You know why we left," he said as he walked hand-in-hand with his wife, Hamsa, down a busy street here in Jordan's capital. "The whole world knows why we left. We can't live in Baghdad anymore; it is as simple as that. Life is impossible."...........

Video: Special report on Iraq's growing refugee crisis

David Edwards

In a Channel 4 News special, Jonathan Miller reports on the millions of Iraqi refugees fleeing their homeland in the wake of an ongoing war.
"They've escaped from hell in Iraq, but now they're stuck here in limbo," reports Miller on the roughly one million Iraqi refugees who have fled to Syria. "Many are destitute, most are illegal. They can't get health care, there's no schooling, and no jobs. And there's always that looming threat of summary deportation."
In Jordan, as in Syria, Iraqis who flee the war are not officially recognized as political refugees, but instead are considered temporary visitors, thus denying them any permanent residence or work permits. Jordan has currently stopped accepting refugees...........

Gonzales: 'Mistakes Were Made'
But Attorney General Defends Firings of Eight U.S. Attorneys

By Dan Eggen and Paul Kane Washington Post Staff Writers Wednesday, March 14, 2007; Page A01
Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales took responsibility yesterday for "mistakes" related to the firing of eight U.S. attorneys last year but rejected calls for his resignation from Democrats who accuse him of misleading Congress.
"I acknowledge that mistakes were made here. I accept that responsibility," Gonzales said. He said he did not know the details of the plan to fire the prosecutors, but he defended the dismissals: "I stand by the decision, and I think it was a right decision.".........

Pi Fans Have Their Day

By ERIN McCLAM

This is a story about love. About inscrutable complexity and remarkable simplicity, about the promise of forever. It is about obsession and devotion, and grand gestures and 4,000-word love letters.
It is about a curious group of people with an almost religious zeal for a mind-numbing string of numbers. Actually one number, made up of a chain that is known - so far - to be more than one trillion digits long.
They are the acolytes of the church of pi.................

and you may well wonder what the heck ez has to do with pi. well LOTS. i have heard much of ez but i never saw one of her books or saw her old pbs show on knitting. last monday, i got a copy of the old pbs show "knitting workshop" on dvd. two dvds. the first is four hours long, the second is two hours long. the first has two parts

part 1 is four half hour lessons. ez talks of wool and gauge and casting on and winding wool and increasing and decreasing. she also shows you how to knit a hat

part 2 is four half hour lessons. ez shows you how to knit two different kinds of sweaters. one is a yoke sweater the other is a norwegian dropped shoulder sweater (she even shows you steeks although that word never is uttered).

i have NOT watched the second dvd yet. i'm savoring it.

ez passed a few years ago but i LOVE HER. her daughter meg swansen is carrying on her work AND her knitting camp.

ez is rather like the julia child of knitting. she throws out a lot of conventional thinking and tells you to do what YOU want, what feels good to YOU. oh, as long as you follow just a FEW tiny rules.

and that brings me back to pi

ez had invented and/or refined many knitting patterns based on mathematical formulas INCLUDING her sweater formulas (proportions. yoke to body. sleeve width and length to body).

she is VERY famous for her
pi shawl

All the world is in love with Pi

i happened to see amy winehouse on letterman last night

she was mesmorizing. she actually does her eyemakeup a bit like mine - 'doe eyes' i believe is what they called it in the 50s. the black liner extended in a 'wing' past the ends of your eyes. she looks like she belongs in another era, she sounds like whisky and smoke.

i liked her a great deal. i have to run a few errands later today (i'm off of work this week - YAHHHHHHHHHHHH) and buying her cd is one of them.

That Winehouse Buzz? Believe It

By J. Freedom du LacWashington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, March 13, 2007; Page C01

Some singers have whiskey-soaked voices. Amy Winehouse has a whiskey-soaked oeuvre.
"They tried to make me go to rehab / I said, 'No, no, no,' " the British soulstress sings at the outset of her marvelous new album, "Back to Black." A punchy single with shimmering, '60s-style girl-group production flourishes, "Rehab" tells of Winehouse's refusal to heed a former manager's sobering advice. "I always keep a bottle near," she belts.

Booze is to Winehouse's music and public persona what sex is to R. Kelly's. Her drunken behavior has become the stuff of tabloid legend -- at least in England, where Winehouse has been a star since her 2003 debut, "Frank." (The album was never released stateside.) No
story about her is complete without noting that affinity for alcohol. Not since Dean Martin has liquor been such a career gold mine. Only in her case, it's Cuervo Gold.........

why shouldn't people who just HAPPEN to be gay have the right to the SAME happiness people who are NOT gay have? i see no reason.

General Pace: 'Homosexual acts immoral'

David Edwards

In and interview with the Chicago Tribune today, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace said that he thinks "homosexual acts are immoral."
"My upbringing is such that I believe there are certain things, certain types of conduct, that are immoral. ... I believe that homosexual acts between individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts," he said.
Keith Olbermann, host of MSNBC's Countdown, calls Pace's remarks "tomorrow's administration scandal." ...............

............This month and next, though, are prime time. It's sugar-shack season. Maple trees are tapped, sap drips into buckets that are then collected on sleighs pulled by Belgian horses, and wood fires blaze to reduce the thin, watery sap into a sweet amber liquid.
Faucher won't begin tapping his trees until tomorrow; he always waits "until the decline of the moon of March." But that first step in the sugaring process is already well underway in the United States' four top maple-sugar states: Vermont, Maine, New York and New Hampshire, in that order
