sonia sotomayer

i will attempt to keep an open mind here. she certainly HAS the credentials (unlike let's say harriet miers). i am half excited and half pissed.

she made the ABSOLUTE WRONG decision on a case close to home. it's called 'the douche bag' case. a connecticut high school student referred (NOT by specific name(s)) to her school's administrator(s) as douche bags because they had put some type of music presentation on hold or cancelled it. she did this on her OWN personal blog OFF OF SCHOOL GROUNDS. not too many people saw it. a handful. she ran for student office and was elected. as punishment THE EFFING DOUCHE BAGS (i'm not in high school, i can call them douche bags) wouldn't allow her to assume her office. as i said, EFFING DOUCHE BAGS. you can read the entire story at the cool justice report. and more here. andy thibault has done a grand job of reporting this travesty of justice.

p.s. - so i hate to say this. am i glad his nominee is a woman? yes, i am. like i said, i HATE that it matters (to me). although i take comfort in knowing the woman MUST be able to do the job.

Sotomayor’s Anti-Student “Douchebag” Ruling

again, i will try to keep an open mind here. i WANT her to be great. i want obama's decision to be THE right one (then again, a lot of the decisions he's made are NOT the right ones in my personal opinion. i knew that going in though. i didn't know to what extent though)

Sotomayor’s Rulings Are Exhaustive but Often Narrow
By ADAM LIPTAK
WASHINGTON — Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s judicial opinions are marked by diligence, depth and unflashy competence. If they are not always a pleasure to read, they are usually models of modern judicial craftsmanship, which prizes careful attention to the facts in the record and a methodical application of layers of legal principles.........

Obama Hails Judge as ‘Inspiring’

By PETER BAKER and JEFF ZELENY
WASHINGTON — President Obama announced Tuesday that he would nominate Sonia Sotomayor, a federal appeals judge in New York, to the Supreme Court, choosing a daughter of Puerto Rican parents who was raised in a Bronx public housing project to become the nation’s first Hispanic justice............

he's doing it again

and everytime he does it, it's MORE frightening than the last time. now he's nominating the devil to be assistant attorney general

MSNBC host: Bush holding judges hostage to get 'torture memo' writer DoJ job
David Edwards and Nick Juliano
President Bush has decided to withdraw 84 executive branch nominees, including federal judges, effectively making them pawns in his political ploy to get one "ultra-conservative" lawyer approved to the justice department. MSNBC host Dan Abrams called out the president, who already will be leaving a right-leaning judiciary as his most lasting legacy.
"Steven Bradbury, the author of the secret memos that authorized torturing detainees, the man who decried that Harriet Miers did not have to testify about the fired U.S. attorneys scandal has been nominated to be assistant attorney general, in particular, a job that‘ is supposed to provide a political guidance on the legality of presidential actions," Abrams said Thusday night as part of his ongoing series,
Bush League Justice. "According to Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, Congress refusal to confirm him, has lead the president to pull 84 of his nominees for positions in the executive, judicial branches including judges, an order that came from the President‘s Chief of Staff."...........

constitution?

we don't need no stinkin' constitution!!!
i need to know, i want to know, how the hell they keep getting away with this shite

When executive privilege becomes executive disdain

The Bush administration, which has been pushing presidential power to new extremes, is reportedly developing an even more dangerous new theory of executive privilege. It says that if Congress holds White House officials in contempt for withholding important evidence in the U.S. attorney scandal, the Justice Department simply will not pursue the charges. This stance tears at the fabric of the Constitution and upends the rule of law.
Congress has a constitutional right to investigate the purge of nine U.S. attorneys last year. And there is no doubt that the investigation has unearthed improprieties: Several administration officials have already admitted illegal or improper actions involving the politicization of the country's chief law enforcement agency.
But the administration has been extraordinarily defiant toward Congress' legitimate requests for information. The low point came recently when Harriet Miers, the former White House counsel, refused even to show up in response to a congressional subpoena...........

thousands of our men and women are dead

TENS of thousands of THEIR men and women and children are dead. even more are displaced. BILLIONS of dollars are going down the drain. corruption is rampant. goddess only knows what the mercernaries are doing.

people are being slaughtered in darfur (and worse)

and yet the ONLY time some members of congress (republicans in this case) react is when someone chooses to use the word 'liar' in a king george context?

what the f**k is wrong with THAT picture?
Congressmembers rule: No calling Bush a liar

Michael Roston
A Congressional Democrat has been reined in for calling President George W. Bush a 'liar' during a Thursday hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, according to the Monday edition of the newspaper Roll Call.
"Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.) offered a lengthy criticism of Bush’s record toward the end of Thursday’s hearing, which included a statement that Bush lied about the reasons for going to war with Iraq in 2003," writes Susan Davis. "Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah) offered an objection on the grounds that Watt’s words were 'unparliamentary' and violated House rules on debate and decorum that forbid personal attacks on Members, the president or vice president."
The exchange occurred just before the end of the hearing that expected to receive testimony from former White House Counsel Harriet Miers, who failed to appear. She cited the White House's exercise of 'executive privilege.'
Davis notes that a problem then occurred.........

E-Mails Show Machinations to Replace Prosecutor

Administration Worked for Months to Make Rove Aide U.S. Attorney in Arkansas
By Dan Eggen and Amy GoldsteinWashington Post Staff Writers Friday, March 23, 2007; Page A01
Two months before Bud Cummins was fired as U.S. attorney in Little Rock, a protege of presidential adviser Karl Rove was maneuvering with the Justice Department to take his place.
Last April, Tim Griffin, a Rove aide and longtime GOP operative, sent the attorney general's chief of staff a flattering letter about himself written by Cummins, the prosecutor he was trying to replace, internal e-mails released this week show. Rove and Harriet Miers, then the White House counsel, were keenly interested in putting him in the position, e-mails reveal...........

...........Some of the thousands of pages of e-mails released this week underscore the extraordinary planning and effort, at the highest levels of the Justice Department and White House, to secure Griffin a job running one of the smaller U.S. attorney's offices in the country........

Accounts of Prosecutors' Dismissals Keep Shifting

By Dan Eggen Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, March 17, 2007; Page A01
More than two weeks after a New Mexico U.S. attorney alleged he was fired for not prosecuting Democrats, the White House and the Justice Department are still struggling to explain the roles of President Bush, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and other key officials in the dismissals of eight federal prosecutors last year.
Yesterday, the White House retreated from its four-day-old claim that former counsel Harriet E. Miers started the process two years ago by proposing the firing of all 93 U.S. attorneys.

"It has been described as her idea . . . but I don't want to vouch for origination," press secretary Tony Snow said. "At this juncture, people have hazy memories.".........
