Even by the standards of our typically debased public discourse, one has to step back and marvel for a moment at the sheer, unmitigated craziness the debate over health care reform has elicited from the right wing.
It hasn't been the usual conservative boilerplate -- blather about "tort reform" or dubious "analyses" predicting the latest proposal would break the budget and blow up the national debt. We've been treated to some truly extreme, and sometimes bizarre, arguments about American health care and even lied to about what the proposed health reform bills contained.
We're accustomed to that kind of hyperbole from hate-radio and the conservative bloggers, but this summer it hasn't been limited to Rush Limbaugh fulminating about socialism or Glenn Beck weepily warning that the Dems' health care legislation are stealthy reparations for slavery.............
Hillerich and Bradsby has been ordered to pay $850,000 to the family of 18-year-old Brandon Patch. The teenager was killed during a 2003 baseball game after being struck in the head by a batted ball off an aluminum bat while pitching during an American Legion game in Helena, MT.
The Patch family argued aluminum bats are dangerous because they cause the ball to travel faster than those hit off wooden bats. They said Brandon did not have enough time to react after the ball was hit...
The company has issued a response based on logic and sanity:
Our company did nothing wrong. We made a bat in accordance with the rules. That bat was approved for play by baseball's organizing and governing organizations. In fact, the jury found in our favor, that the bat was not defective...........
Tancredo had begun by pointing to what he sees as problems with the Medicare system when host David Schuster interrupted him to ask, "So how about the Veterans Administration? The Veterans Administration is a single-payer system. ... That's also a threat to our freedom?".............
............
Moulitsas and Tancredo then began speaking over one another, but Tancredo finally managed to say, "You're not going to try to insult me that way and then pretend like we're just going on and talking about that. You either apologize or I'm off."
"I'm not pretending anything," Moulitsas replied. "I told you straight up." At that point, Tancredo ripped off his earpiece and microphone and left the set.
"This is a threat to Republicans," Markos commented after Tancredo was gone. "They've built an entire ideology predicated on telling people that government does not work. They are terrified of government programs that work, because then people will realize that government's not the enemy."..........

No matter the issue, be it tax cuts for the middle class or health care for all, the stupid (and/or paid for) are out protesting against their own best interests.
But stupidity has crossed the line into offensive propaganda.
The photo was taken at today's glue-sniffer rally by ThinkProgress' Lee Fang. The sign above reads “National Socialist Health Care: Dachau, Germany – 1945."
Fox News has aggressively promoted this rally and its talking heads, like Glenn Beck, have aggressively tried to tie health care reform to Nazism. Americans for Prosperity, a corporate front-group sponsored this event.
Too bad for these right-wing haters that Hitler and the Nazis were fascists (right-wing), brought to power by corporate interests under the guise of "Socialism," because if this sign had some basis in fact it would at least be slightly less offensive and not so blatantly anti-Semitic.
But since this sign has no basis in fact and since Nazis were in fact right-wing; and since corporate interests now - just as then - had an interest in seeing piled up dead bodies, this sign is beyond offensive. This is in fact yet another display of the ignorant brandishing propaganda that is anti-Semitic and eagerly embraced as acceptable political talking points. This is not acceptable on any level................

The gunman, identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was wounded at the scene but was captured alive and was in stable condition, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of the Army’s III Corps, said at a press conference late Thursday.
Eleven of the victims died at the scene, military officials said. A 12th died later at a hospital, NBC station KCEN-TV of Waco reported. Cone said that most of those who were shot were military but two were civilians.
Cone also said that a female officer who was thought to be the first responder shot Hasan and was herself wounded and had undergone surgery at a hospital. It was not clear if the officer was a military policewoman or a civilian officer............

Suspect, devout Muslim from Va., wanted Army discharge, aunt said
By Mary Pat Flaherty, William Wan and Christian Davenport
He prayed every day at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, a devout Muslim who, despite asking to be discharged from the U.S. Army, was on the eve of his first deployment to war. Yesterday, authorities said Maj. Nidal M. Hasan, a 39-year-old Arlington-born psychiatrist, shot and killed at least 12 people at Fort Hood, Tex.
.......The Associated Press reported that Hasan attracted the attention of law enforcement authorities in recent months after an Internet posting under the screen name "NidalHasan" compared Islamic suicide bombers to Japanese kamikaze pilots. "To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate," the posting read. "It's more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause."...........

One gunman was shot to death, and two other soldiers were in custody, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone told reporters. It was not immediately known whether the victims were all soldiers or civilians, but Cone said at least one of those killed was a civilian police officer and NBC affiliate KCEN-TV of Waco reported that at least four SWAT officers were among those wounded.

(CNN) -- The night before she was killed on the streets of Tehran, the woman the world would come to know simply as Neda had a dream. "There was a war going on," she told her mom the next morning, "and I was in the front."
Neda's mother had joined her in the street protests that erupted after Iran's disputed June 12 presidential election. But on that fateful morning, she told her daughter she couldn't go with her. As Neda prepared to leave, the mother was filled with anxiety.
"I told her to be very careful, and she said she would."
More than four months after Neda's death, her mother, Hajar Rostami, described the pain her family has endured and how grateful they are to millions across the world who have hailed Neda as a martyr -- a symbol of freedom for Iran. She spoke with CNN by phone in her native Farsi from her home in Tehran a few days ago.
"As a message to everyone, I really want to thank the whole world," she said. "And I don't really know how to thank them, so I ask of you: Please find the right words for me.
"I can't tell you how much it has warmed our hearts, how much it's helped us."..........

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) is still on the House floor this evening, reading the names and telling the stories of constituents whose struggles with their health insurance providers prevented them from obtaining life-saving care.
The congressman -- famous for describing Republicans' healthcare plan as one that urged sick Americans to "die quickly" -- began his speech Wednesday night by listing districts represented by Republicans and noting how many voters in those districts died because they lacked adequate health coverage.

A soft spot for Christian Scientists.
The three senators have quietly inserted a provision into the Democrats' healthcare overhaul that would allow the Christian Science church to receive remuneration from the federal government for prayer treatments as medical expenses.
Why are liberal Democrats teaming up with a conservative senator for a provision that would normally be the bane of the Senate's liberal elite? Because the headquarters of the Christian Science church is in Boston........
and from dependable renegade
who says it better than i do (but i think it pretty damn good)
Let me get this straight: House Democrats are pissing on the health care plan by letting fucking Bart Stupid Stupak (D-Mich.) whip the shit out of the bill because it currently allows for abortions in certain circumstances, but THIS IS FUCKING OKAY?!
Backed by some of the most powerful members of the Senate, a little-noticed provision in the healthcare overhaul bill would require insurers to consider covering Christian Science prayer treatments as medical expenses. The provision was inserted by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R- Utah) with the support of Democratic Sens. John F. Kerry and the late Edward M. Kennedy -- both of Massachusetts, home to the headquarters of the Church of Christ, Scientist.
so THIS is what constitutes "bipartisanship": screwing over women AGAIN, but allowing for bogus religious shit. Fuck Republicans. Fuck Democrats. Fuck 'em all.

I didn’t meet Grayson during either of his two Congressional runs a(2006 nd 2008), but I heard plenty about him. My first and only meeting with the Congressman occurred earlier this year, in late March, in Orlando, Fla., when we spoke at the same event.
At the time, a handful of names of possible GOP challengers were already floating around, including former state Sen. Dan Webster and Orange County Mayor Richard Crotty. Both have since passed on the race.
Smart freshmen from difficult districts, when asked about their re-election prospects, will respond either that they are focused on doing their job on Capitol Hill or that they know that they’ll have a tough fight on their hands and will do everything they can to deserve re-election. Some even say something nice (e.g., “he’d be formidable”) about a potential opponent.
Grayson did none of those things. Instead, with not a whit of humility, he proceeded to bash, then dismiss, Webster and Crotty. A Grayson aide has since said in print that potential opponents have decided against challenging the Congressman because “they don’t want to be gutted like a fish.”

An Arizona Republican National Committeeman called a Tucson conservative talk radio program last week and advised an Arizona Democratic County Chairperson that if he wanted to learn about crime in Tucson he should "ask the brown people."
Bruce Ash called the Jon Justice show to discuss Proposition 200, an unfunded proposition on the Arizona ballot which would mandate a hiring ratio of 2.4 police officers per 1,000 residents. But for the first few minutes of his on-air time Ash was focused on belittling Jeff Rogers, Pima County Democratic Party Chair. Ash said Rogers "sits in his little house in midtown, with his kids who go to school, with his little job...in his little neighborhood," and then, in a startling assertion, accused Rogers of being "blind to all the crime" because Rogers didn't life in a Hispanic neighborhood:

Ohio voters will hit the polls Tuesday to decide the fate of an agribusiness-backed proposal that would amend the state constitution and create a board of political appointees to act as arbiters of what constitutes proper treatment of farm animals. In the eyes of its critics, the heavily favored measure, called Issue 2, represents the meat industry's preemptive strike against a fledgling nationwide movement toward humane food production.
Big Meat means big money in Ohio, the nation's second-largest producer of eggs (Iowa is No. 1) and a major player in pork and veal. The muscle behind Issue 2 is the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, whose political action committee has raised $4 million to promote the measure. .......Technorati Tags:animal cruelty, livestock care standards board, meat industry, factory farming, humane farming

Angela Chase once claimed that she loved Halloween because it was her "one chance all year to be someone else." This, I suspect, is true for most people, who jump at the chance to be a vampire or Sexy Alexander Hamilton or a giant Cup of Noodles come October 31. But ladies, if this article proves anything, it is that a dumbass bro in costume is still a dumbass bro, and no costume is great enough to cover the stench of douche that emanates from the type of man who would read this article (and find it hilarious..............The author, David Breitman, attacks feminists (naturally—women as human beings, what?!), women who wear masks (clearly covering up a "butterface," the author notes) and "fat chicks," who, the author has many choice words for. This section is so unbelievably bad that it actually out-douches the paragraphs about not sleeping with underage girls because the "she dressed like a whore" defense is no longer holding up in court:...............

Newly released FBI data offer evidence of the broad scope and complexity of the nation's terrorist watch list, documenting a daily flood of names nominated for inclusion to the controversial list.
During a 12-month period ended in March this year, for example, the U.S. intelligence community suggested on a daily basis that 1,600 people qualified for the list because they presented a "reasonable suspicion," according to data provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee by the FBI in September and made public last week.
FBI officials cautioned that each nomination "does not necessarily represent a new individual, but may instead involve an alias or name variant for a previously watchlisted person."............
