Skeptics who believe that a university is actually a diploma mill often prove their point by enrolling their cats in the university's program and seeing whether the cat can get a degree. Some enterprising Wikipedians have assembled a list of several such cats. ........

Underwater Kite Harnesses Ocean Energy
Written by Susan Kraemer
A completely new concept of underwater wave energy using a simple 7 ton kite turbine design has been developed by Minesto; which is a spinoff from the Swedish military and aircraft design firm Saab. The Deep Green underwater turbine captures the power of the ocean just like a kite in wind. The system could generate 18 terawatthours of energy annually, enough to provide nearly 4 million British households with reliably green electricity every year. UK households now use about a third of what average US households use in energy..................

WND falsely claimed alleged Fort Hood shooter "advised Obama transition"
WorldNetDaily falsely claimed that alleged Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan "advised Obama transition" in the headline of an article by Jerome Corsi highlighting his listing as a "participant" in a report for the Homeland Security Policy Institute (HSPI) at George Washington University's Presidential Transition Task Force. However, Corsi himself acknowledges that there is no evidence that "the group played any formal role in the official Obama transition" -- indeed, the Task Force was initiated in April 2008...................

10 of the Nuttiest Statements Elected Officials Have Made in the Health Care Battle
By Joshua Holland, AlterNet
Even by the standards of our typically debased public discourse, one has to step back and marvel for a moment at the sheer, unmitigated craziness the debate over health care reform has elicited from the right wing.
It hasn't been the usual conservative boilerplate -- blather about "tort reform" or dubious "analyses" predicting the latest proposal would break the budget and blow up the national debt. We've been treated to some truly extreme, and sometimes bizarre, arguments about American health care and even lied to about what the proposed health reform bills contained.
We're accustomed to that kind of hyperbole from hate-radio and the conservative bloggers, but this summer it hasn't been limited to Rush Limbaugh fulminating about socialism or Glenn Beck weepily warning that the Dems' health care legislation are stealthy reparations for slavery.............

TYWKIWDBI: Baseball bat manufacturer "failed to warn" the public...
........A Montana jury has found the manufacturer of Louisville Slugger bats to be liable for damages because of an alleged failure to put adequate warnings on the product to notify the public regarding its dangers.
Hillerich and Bradsby has been ordered to pay $850,000 to the family of 18-year-old Brandon Patch. The teenager was killed during a 2003 baseball game after being struck in the head by a batted ball off an aluminum bat while pitching during an American Legion game in Helena, MT.
The Patch family argued aluminum bats are dangerous because they cause the ball to travel faster than those hit off wooden bats. They said Brandon did not have enough time to react after the ball was hit...
The company has issued a response based on logic and sanity:
Our company did nothing wrong. We made a bat in accordance with the rules. That bat was approved for play by baseball's organizing and governing organizations. In fact, the jury found in our favor, that the bat was not defective...........

Ex-GOP Congressman storms off when confronted over healthcare
By Muriel Kane
Former Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo attempted to argue against Democratic plans for health care reform on Friday by claiming veterans were dissatisfied with their government-run health care. He was confronted by blogger Markos Moutlitsas, who unlike Tancredo is a veteran himself, and reacted by stalking off the set of MSNBC's The Ed Show where both men were guests.
Tancredo had begun by pointing to what he sees as problems with the Medicare system when host David Schuster interrupted him to ask, "So how about the Veterans Administration? The Veterans Administration is a single-payer system. ... That's also a threat to our freedom?".............
............
Moulitsas and Tancredo then began speaking over one another, but Tancredo finally managed to say, "You're not going to try to insult me that way and then pretend like we're just going on and talking about that. You either apologize or I'm off."
"I'm not pretending anything," Moulitsas replied. "I told you straight up." At that point, Tancredo ripped off his earpiece and microphone and left the set.
"This is a threat to Republicans," Markos commented after Tancredo was gone. "They've built an entire ideology predicated on telling people that government does not work. They are terrified of government programs that work, because then people will realize that government's not the enemy."..........

More corporate sponsored, right-wing anti-Semitism...
by Larisa Alexandrovna
..............
No matter the issue, be it tax cuts for the middle class or health care for all, the stupid (and/or paid for) are out protesting against their own best interests.
But stupidity has crossed the line into offensive propaganda.
The photo was taken at today's glue-sniffer rally by ThinkProgress' Lee Fang. The sign above reads “National Socialist Health Care: Dachau, Germany – 1945."
Fox News has aggressively promoted this rally and its talking heads, like Glenn Beck, have aggressively tried to tie health care reform to Nazism. Americans for Prosperity, a corporate front-group sponsored this event.
Too bad for these right-wing haters that Hitler and the Nazis were fascists (right-wing), brought to power by corporate interests under the guise of "Socialism," because if this sign had some basis in fact it would at least be slightly less offensive and not so blatantly anti-Semitic.
But since this sign has no basis in fact and since Nazis were in fact right-wing; and since corporate interests now - just as then - had an interest in seeing piled up dead bodies, this sign is beyond offensive. This is in fact yet another display of the ignorant brandishing propaganda that is anti-Semitic and eagerly embraced as acceptable political talking points. This is not acceptable on any level................

For Glenn Beck, SEIU Is 'Radical, Marxist,' Except When Its Nurses Treat Him for Emergency Abdominal Pains
By Alexander Zaitchik,
Earlier today, a hospitalized Glenn Beck tweeted in praise of the "AMAZING drs/nurses" who have cared for him since the emergency removal of his inflamed appendix yesterday afternoon.
The quality of care he is receiving should not have come as a surprise. When Beck complained of acute abdominal pain during his radio program on Wednesday, he was rushed to a nearby hospital. The security-conscious Beck has not disclosed the name of the facility, but it's a safe bet that it is staffed by proud members of a storied union: New York's Local 1199, aka United Healthcare Workers East, which belongs to the Service Employees International Union. The SEIU has organized all of Manhattan's major hospitals, including every facility to which Beck could have conceivably been sent.
It probably has not occurred to Beck to link his kind, efficient nurses to something as dastardly as the SEIU. As recently as Wednesday, he was busy smearing the union with his usual verbal feces. For the past several months, on radio and television, Beck has cast the SEIU, the country's largest union, as a Toxic Avenger-looking bogeyman in his conspiratorial fantasyland. In the progressive plot of Beck's imagination, the "radical, Marxist" SEIU is conspiring with ACORN "thugs" to destroy the freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and turn this country into North Korea--or worse.........

more msnbc updates on the fort hood tragedy
i'm literally SICK about this. the (alleged) shooter was not only an officer, he was a psychiatrist. earlier it was reported there were more than one gunman, and one of the gunmen was dead. both of those things appear to be untrue. they are now saying maj. nidal malik hasan was THE only (alleged) shooter, and he was not killed. he was shot four times, but will survive.
this is shocking in so very many ways. the first and foremost one is, our soldiers MUST BE SAFE AT HOME. they must be. no question. no argument. this type of thing must NEVER happen.
it is the duty of those in charge to root out any and everyone in the military who does not belong there (and there are many of those. far too many). our men and women deserve at the very least comfort and safety AT HOME well, you can read the story for yourselves
Gunman kills 12, wounds 31 at Fort Hood
Army psychiatrist identified as attacker is captured alive, general says
An Army psychiatrist who opened fire at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 12 people and wounding 31 others, was shot but captured alive, military officials said late Thursday.
The gunman, identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was wounded at the scene but was captured alive and was in stable condition, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of the Army’s III Corps, said at a press conference late Thursday.
Eleven of the victims died at the scene, military officials said. A 12th died later at a hospital, NBC station KCEN-TV of Waco reported. Cone said that most of those who were shot were military but two were civilians.
Cone also said that a female officer who was thought to be the first responder shot Hasan and was herself wounded and had undergone surgery at a hospital. It was not clear if the officer was a military policewoman or a civilian officer............

By Mary Pat Flaherty, William Wan and Christian Davenport
He prayed every day at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, a devout Muslim who, despite asking to be discharged from the U.S. Army, was on the eve of his first deployment to war. Yesterday, authorities said Maj. Nidal M. Hasan, a 39-year-old Arlington-born psychiatrist, shot and killed at least 12 people at Fort Hood, Tex.
.......The Associated Press reported that Hasan attracted the attention of law enforcement authorities in recent months after an Internet posting under the screen name "NidalHasan" compared Islamic suicide bombers to Japanese kamikaze pilots. "To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate," the posting read. "It's more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause."...........

Army says 12 dead, 31 injured at Fort Hood
One suspect killed, two others in custody in incident on Texas base
At least one U.S. soldier opened fire Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 12 people and wounding 31 others, military officials said.
One gunman was shot to death, and two other soldiers were in custody, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone told reporters. It was not immediately known whether the victims were all soldiers or civilians, but Cone said at least one of those killed was a civilian police officer and NBC affiliate KCEN-TV of Waco reported that at least four SWAT officers were among those wounded.

Neda's mother: She was 'like an angel'
By Wayne Drash and Octavia Nasr, CNN
(CNN) -- The night before she was killed on the streets of Tehran, the woman the world would come to know simply as Neda had a dream. "There was a war going on," she told her mom the next morning, "and I was in the front."
Neda's mother had joined her in the street protests that erupted after Iran's disputed June 12 presidential election. But on that fateful morning, she told her daughter she couldn't go with her. As Neda prepared to leave, the mother was filled with anxiety.
"I told her to be very careful, and she said she would."
More than four months after Neda's death, her mother, Hajar Rostami, described the pain her family has endured and how grateful they are to millions across the world who have hailed Neda as a martyr -- a symbol of freedom for Iran. She spoke with CNN by phone in her native Farsi from her home in Tehran a few days ago.
"As a message to everyone, I really want to thank the whole world," she said. "And I don't really know how to thank them, so I ask of you: Please find the right words for me.
"I can't tell you how much it has warmed our hearts, how much it's helped us."..........

Grayson reading names of dead on House floor
By Tony Romm -
Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) is still on the House floor this evening, reading the names and telling the stories of constituents whose struggles with their health insurance providers prevented them from obtaining life-saving care.
The congressman -- famous for describing Republicans' healthcare plan as one that urged sick Americans to "die quickly" -- began his speech Wednesday night by listing districts represented by Republicans and noting how many voters in those districts died because they lacked adequate health coverage.
That tactic, however, almost immediately angered Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), who promptly requested Grayson's remarks be taken down. .....................

Democrats’ healthcare bill would pay for ‘prayer’ treatment
By John Byrne
What do Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) have in common?
A soft spot for Christian Scientists.
The three senators have quietly inserted a provision into the Democrats' healthcare overhaul that would allow the Christian Science church to receive remuneration from the federal government for prayer treatments as medical expenses.
Why are liberal Democrats teaming up with a conservative senator for a provision that would normally be the bane of the Senate's liberal elite? Because the headquarters of the Christian Science church is in Boston........
and from dependable renegade
who says it better than i do (but i think it pretty damn good)
I call EXTREME BULLSHIT!
Let me get this straight: House Democrats are pissing on the health care plan by letting fucking Bart Stupid Stupak (D-Mich.) whip the shit out of the bill because it currently allows for abortions in certain circumstances, but THIS IS FUCKING OKAY?!
Backed by some of the most powerful members of the Senate, a little-noticed provision in the healthcare overhaul bill would require insurers to consider covering Christian Science prayer treatments as medical expenses. The provision was inserted by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R- Utah) with the support of Democratic Sens. John F. Kerry and the late Edward M. Kennedy -- both of Massachusetts, home to the headquarters of the Church of Christ, Scientist.
so THIS is what constitutes "bipartisanship": screwing over women AGAIN, but allowing for bogus religious shit. Fuck Republicans. Fuck Democrats. Fuck 'em all.

Lady Frothenberg Laces Up Her Corset
by digby
Village social secretary Lady Stuart Frothenberg is simply OUTRAGED by that horrible man Alan Grayson and puts her astute observations of human nature and extensive training in psychoanalysis to work to explain why he scares us so:
I didn’t meet Grayson during either of his two Congressional runs a(2006 nd 2008), but I heard plenty about him. My first and only meeting with the Congressman occurred earlier this year, in late March, in Orlando, Fla., when we spoke at the same event.
At the time, a handful of names of possible GOP challengers were already floating around, including former state Sen. Dan Webster and Orange County Mayor Richard Crotty. Both have since passed on the race.
Smart freshmen from difficult districts, when asked about their re-election prospects, will respond either that they are focused on doing their job on Capitol Hill or that they know that they’ll have a tough fight on their hands and will do everything they can to deserve re-election. Some even say something nice (e.g., “he’d be formidable”) about a potential opponent.
Grayson did none of those things. Instead, with not a whit of humility, he proceeded to bash, then dismiss, Webster and Crotty. A Grayson aide has since said in print that potential opponents have decided against challenging the Congressman because “they don’t want to be gutted like a fish.”
That is the most shocking story I've ever heard. What kind of animal would behave in such a way? Oh my Lord, I can hardly breathe!..............
..............Thank you Lord Jesus. I was petrified that there was a pocket of insane voters in Florida who would vote for someone who shockingly referred to a lobbyist as a (dare I say it? ... no) prostitute or who thinks that the Federal Reserve should account for the all the money it's been printing. After all, it's a Republican district and we know how much they loathe insulting rhetoric and emotional language.
Thank goodness Lady Frothenberg has sounded the alarm about this bizarre and frightening man. And thank the good lord in heaven that he will not be among decent people much longer:
So where does Grayson stand politically after his “whore” comment, after saying that Republicans want sick people to “die quickly” and after comparing the nation’s health care system to the Holocaust? In very hot water.
Grayson’s comments resonated with some grass-roots Democrats, but elections in Florida’s 8th district aren’t won by those kinds of voters. Swing voters, and particularly Republican-leaning swing voters, are likely to pick the next Congressman...........

i'm not preaching here. i am stating one of my beliefs. if you can't treat an animal with kindness (even if you are going to kill it for food later), then there is something not quite right with you. if you can be cruel to an animal, you sure as shite will have no problem being cruel to a human (did you know there is a big correlation between domestic abusers also abusing animals? don't believe me? well there are any number of sites out there. here's but one)
Big Meat's Big Day
In Ohio, the humane-farming debate is about to be uncaged.
Ohio voters will hit the polls Tuesday to decide the fate of an agribusiness-backed proposal that would amend the state constitution and create a board of political appointees to act as arbiters of what constitutes proper treatment of farm animals. In the eyes of its critics, the heavily favored measure, called Issue 2, represents the meat industry's preemptive strike against a fledgling nationwide movement toward humane food production.
Big Meat means big money in Ohio, the nation's second-largest producer of eggs (Iowa is No. 1) and a major player in pork and veal. The muscle behind Issue 2 is the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, whose political action committee has raised $4 million to promote the measure. .......Technorati Tags:animal cruelty, livestock care standards board, meat industry, factory farming, humane farming

In the laboratory of the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen . . .
Reaching for an oversized chrome spoon
He gathers an intimate quantity of dried muffin remnants
And, brushing his scapular aside,
Proceeds to dump these inside of his shirt . . .
He turns to us and speaks:
"Some people like cupcakes better. I, for one,
Care LESS for them!"
Arrogantly twisting the sterile canvas snoot of a fully charged icing-anointment utensil,
He poots forth a quarter-ounce green rosetta
Near . . .
(Let's try that again . . . )
He poots forth a quarter-ounce green rosetta
Near the summit of a dense-but-radiant muffin of his own design
Later he says:
"Some people . . . some people like cupcakes exclusively,
While I myself say there is naught, nor ought there be,
Nothing so exalted on the face of God's grey earth
As that Prince of Foods . . . The Muffin!"

a 'reasonable suspicion'?
1,600 people a DAY? by that rate, we're all in deep shite.
who gets 'nominated' to be on that list? someone that complains? i sure complain but i sure am NOT a terrorist. not only wouldn't i think of committing an act of terror, i wouldn't even think of owning a gun much less a weapon of MASS destruction
it's not quite clear where the names come from. are they from someone sitting at a desk in a dark basement with a cigarette dangling out of their lip and scotch on their breath?
