i like to keep fairly anonymous

i'm not ashamed of who i am or my beliefs or my thoughts. i express myself freely to my friends, family and co-workers as i do on my blogs. i just don't choose to share my name with strangers. i'm rather private.

i don't think i'd get fired. i rarely blog about my work and when i do, it's usually in a positive light (i LOVE my job and my co-workers. i also think my company has some rather progressive policies - after all it IS european). my friends know about my blogs and most of them don't read them (why should they bother, they get ME mouthing off in person).

even on social networking sites i don't exactly use my real name. hell, i do NOT want to 'befriend' someone i don't like. i have no patience and i don't suffer fools gladly.

i try not to be cruel although i have attacked the right now and again.

The coming-out stories of anonymous bloggers

By John D. Sutter
CNN

- Blog fans in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, saw PittGirl as their masked superhero -- a comedian and local commentator who jibed the mayor without reserve and ranted freely about her hatred of pigeons.

But despite her effort to keep her real name secret, people started to figure out who PittGirl was.

Feeling pressure to take control of her identity before someone else outed her, PittGirl on Wednesday posted pictures of herself on her blog and introduced readers to her real-world self: Virginia Montanez, a 35-year-old married mother of two who worked in the nonprofit sector.

"My friends and family call me Ginny," she wrote on her blog. "But you can continue to call me Your Majesty, because I've grown accustomed."

On Thursday morning, Montanez was fired from her job because of her online persona, she said.

Montanez's and other online coming-out stories highlight the complicated way people view anonymity on the Internet and the high stakes that come with trying to keep up an online persona.

The reasons people want to be anonymous online vary. Political whistle blowers fear retribution; employees want to separate the personal from the professional; artists want their work to stand up without an attached biography; and some writers like Montanez take on a sort of Everyman quality by keeping their real names off their posts.......

wow michele and i agree!

Idaho GOP leader, Wells Fargo contractor, pulls .357 Magnum on delinquent homeowner
John Byrne

The Republican Party chairman of Boise County in Idaho was arrested Thursday for aggravated assault after he pulled a gun on a man whose house he was photographing.

Charles McAffee, 33, was among Idaho's anti-tax tea-party activists, and is a member of the Idaho Republican Party Central Committee. He was arrested after pulling a handgun on a homeowner whose mortgage his employer sought to photograph for being delinquent. His employer is a contractor for Wells Fargo.

Wells Fargo called McAffee's behavior "horrific and absolutely inexcusable." Via AP:.........

One of McAffee's supporters said the homeowner's account was false:

"McAffee brandished the weapon to de-escalate the conflict," he asserted.

Yes, you read that right: he pulled a gun to de-escalate the conflict............

i think LOADS o' dirty deeds happened on the last watch. way more than this one - although one can't tell from what's happening at town hall meetings. it would almost seem as if THIS president started an unjust, illegal and immoral war (based on LIES LIES AND MORE LIES). it's almost as if THIS president encouraged torture and killing. it's almost as if THIS president allowed his own citizens to suffer after natural disaster. it's as if this president ONLY cared about big bid-nez.

listen, barack obama isn't a god. he has disappointed me time after time. HOWEVER, HE IS FAR FAR FAR better than king george. he strikes me as being more HONEST than king george. more INTELLIGENT than king george.

and barack obama got shafted the day he started. people are now blaming HIM for the wars in iraqafghanistan (yes, really).

Ridge Says He Was Pressured to Elevate Threat Warning
Washington Post Staff Writer

Former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge, the first director of the Department of Homeland Security, says that he was pressured by other Bush administration department heads to raise the national security-threat level on the eve of the 2004 presidential election -- a move he rejected as having such uncomfortable political undertones that it could destroy the administration's credibility.

The disclosure comes in Ridge's new book, "The Test of Our Times: America Under Siege . . . and How We Can Be Safe Again," written with Larry Bloom and published by Thomas Dunne Books, an imprint of St. Martin's Press. It will not hit bookstores until Sept. 1, but a copy of the book was obtained Friday by The Washington Post...........

Tastee Diner target of 'kiss-in' protest
2 women asked to leave after public embrace

By REBECCA ARMENDARIZ, Washington Blade
Two women who say they were asked to leave a Silver Spring restaurant after embracing at the counter will return to the establishment in protest Wednesday evening.

Aiyi'nah Ford said she and her partner Torian Brown finished their meal at the Tastee Diner, which is part of a chain of three area restaurants. Ford said that after she and Brown finished eating and paid, they waited at the counter to give their waitress her tip, and embraced.

Ford said a manager she identified only by the first name Paul, asked if they could "please take that outside." Ford asked Paul if he was serious, and he said that he was. Ford noted that a heterosexual couple was kissing at a nearby booth.

"He proceeded to say that this was a family establishment and that people are trying to eat, as though our embrace would make someone sick," Ford said.

She said the waitress followed the women outside after she received her tip and apologized, adding that the incident was embarrassing and that similar incidents have happened before.

"That was the icing on the cake," Ford said.

Now, Ford, Brown, and close to 80 of their friends have pledged to visit the Tastee Diner Wednesday for a "kiss-in" type protest. .........

Take my 'First Lady's mom is a witch' exposé seriously, conservative pleads

After being mercilessly made fun of by Wonkette, a conservative blogger desperately wants people to take her claim of "African Voodoo" inside the White House seriously.

Over at Townhall, the conservative opinion outlet, writer Kristen Atkinson claimed on Saturday that "The Obama White House is abuzz" over his mother-in-law's allegedly odd behavior.

(How she knows this? "A close friend of Michelle's.")

She goes on to claim that Michelle's mother had turned to Santeria when her late husband was gravely ill, and that recently, fretting for her health, she'd invited an old friend over and conducted some kind of ritual.

In steps Wonkette, snarky as ever.

This story and all of its quotes are true. Jane Mayer of the New Yorker is one helluva reporter and would never make up something this incendiary. Oh… what is that, Intern Riley?… It’s from Townhall, not Jane Mayer of the New Yorker?… THEN IT’S EVEN TRUER.

Of course, blogger Atkinson has a reputation of factual, credible reporting to defend (wait ... does she?) ... And defend her claim, she did ... In, well, this rambling quaff of a tirade:

I posted a very serious article recently in Townhall.com about witchcraft in the White House, and later realized that your website had made a farce out of it. I saw that your staff and readers made a lot of extremely cruel comments about me and my story. Why are you people so rude? Does anybody take anything seriously anymore?............

i know it's happened before. athletes accused of competing as women but really being men. i know that scenario has happened on purpose. HOWEVER, in most cases, i do believe there are athletes who are women, compete as women and they have an unusual genetic makeup. they may have a few male characteristics . they may be built more like a man than a woman YET THEY ARE WOMEN.

this woman is 18 years old. she can run. everyone who is jealous SHOULD JUST GET THE HELL OVER IT.

Gold Awarded Amid Dispute Over Runner’s Sex
By CHRISTOPHER CLAREY and GINA KOLATA

BERLIN — As an 18-year-old runner from a village in South Africa received her gold medal in Olympic Stadium on Thursday night, activity away from the track had put her at the center of an international dispute: doctors here and in her home country were examining test results to determine whether she has too many male characteristics to compete as a woman.

The case of Caster Semenya, who has burst to prominence this season, touched off a debate over whether she should be allowed to keep her medal and, more broadly, how sports officials are supposed to discern the fuzzy biological line between male and female.

Medical experts said assigning sex was hardly as easy as sizing someone up visually. Even rigorous examinations can result in ambiguous findings. Some conditions that give women male characteristics can be discovered only through intrusive physical examinations, and others require genetic analysis.........

C.I.A. Said to Use Outsiders to Put Bombs on Drones
By JAMES RISEN and MARK MAZZETTI
WASHINGTON — From a secret division at its North Carolina headquarters, the company formerly known as Blackwater has assumed a role in Washington’s most important counterterrorism program: the use of remotely piloted drones to kill Al Qaeda’s leaders, according to government officials and current and former employees.

The division’s operations are carried out at hidden bases in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where the company’s contractors assemble and load Hellfire missiles and 500-pound laser-guided bombs on remotely piloted Predator aircraft, work previously performed by employees of the Central Intelligence Agency. They also provide security at the covert bases, the officials said.

The role of the company in the Predator program highlights the degree to which the C.I.A. now depends on outside contractors to perform some of the agency’s most important assignments. And it illustrates the resilience of Blackwater, now known as Xe (pronounced Zee) Services, though most people in and outside the company still refer to it as Blackwater. It has grown through government work, even as it attracted criticism and allegations of brutality in Iraq.........

i'm assuming this is true

i didn't research ANY of it though so i can't be sure. i don't know if the people of fiji have trouble getting themselves clean water. i don't know if the government keeps a tight lid on everything that is said. i don't know a THING about the owners of fiji water. i don't know if in fact fiji water is a good thing or a bad thing. I DO KNOW buying water in plastic bottles CANNOT be better than tap water. if those bottles are made in china it's EVEN WORSE.

i don't drink bottled water unless it's the only thing around. if i'm in the car going somewhere and i am SUDDENTLY HORRIBLY PARCHED, i'll get a water (mostly an iced tea though, i TRY to get it in glass). again, it's rare. at work i have mugs and glasses. after i'm done with my coffees, i'll drink WATER OUT OF A TAP. at home, i drink WATER OUT OF A TAP.

why do we even HAVE bottled water? it's hip, it's cool it's with it?????????????? you could have fooled me. IT'S WATER

if you don't want what is in tap water, BUY A FILTER AND USE IT.

this is a frightening and ugly story. and yes, it's about WATER

so if you drink bottled water (and i think at least 80% of people i personally know DO, please read this story. yes even YOU hipsters and scenesters. READ IT

The Fiji Phenomenon: It's a Human Rights and Environmental Nightmare, So Why Is It the #1 Imported Bottled Water in the US?
By Anna Lenzer, Mother Jones

The Internet café in the Fijian capital, Suva, was usually open all night long. Dimly lit, with rows of sleek, modern terminals, the place was packed at all hours with teenage boys playing boisterous rounds of video games. But one day soon after I arrived, the staff told me they now had to shut down by 5 p.m. Police orders, they shrugged: The country's military junta had declared martial law a few days before, and things were a bit tense.

I sat down and sent out a few emails -- filling friends in on my visit to the Fiji Water bottling plant, forwarding a story about foreign journalists being kicked off the island. Then my connection died. "It will just be a few minutes," one of the clerks said.

Moments later, a pair of police officers walked in. They headed for a woman at another terminal; I turned to my screen to compose a note about how cops were even showing up in the Internet cafés. Then I saw them coming toward me. "We're going to take you in for questioning about the emails you've been writing," they said.

What followed, in a windowless room at the main police station, felt like a bad cop movie. "Who are you really?" the bespectacled inspector wearing a khaki uniform and a smug grin asked me over and over, as if my passport, press credentials, and stacks of notes about Fiji Water weren't sufficient clues to my identity. (My iPod, he surmised tensely, was "good for transmitting information.") I asked him to call my editors, even a UN official who could vouch for me. "Shut up!" he snapped. He rifled through my bags, read my notebooks and emails. "I'd hate to see a young lady like you go into a jail full of men," he averred, smiling grimly. "You know what happened to women during the 2000 coup, don't you?"......

Barney Frank goes toe to toe at health care town hall
(CNN) -- Most Congress members conducting town hall meetings this month have chosen a noncombative posture to deal with angry participants who disrupt the proceedings. Not Rep. Barney Frank.

At a lively two-hour meeting Tuesday night in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Frank gave as good as he got in confronting opponents of overhauling the nation's health care system.

The crowded hall had both supporters and detractors, but the opposing side was much louder and more raucous, booing the Massachusetts Democrat from the moment he was introduced and shouting questions and challenges at him throughout.

"You want me to talk about it or do you want to yell?" he asked over and over when interrupted while trying to answer. Continued shouting brought a sterner rebuke.

"Disruption never helps your cause," he said more than once. "It just looks like you're afraid to have rational discussion.".........

C.I.A. Sought Blackwater’s Help in Plan to Kill Jihadists
By MARK MAZZETTI

WASHINGTON — The Central Intelligence Agency in 2004 hired outside contractors from the private security contractor Blackwater USA as part of a secret program to locate and assassinate top operatives of Al Qaeda, according to current and former government officials.

Executives from Blackwater, which has generated controversy because of its aggressive tactics in Iraq, helped the spy agency with planning, training and surveillance. The C.I.A. spent several million dollars on the program, which did not successfully capture or kill any terrorist suspects.

The fact that the C.I.A. used an outside company for the program was a major reason that Leon E. Panetta, the C.I.A.’s director, became alarmed and called an emergency meeting in June to tell Congress that the agency had withheld details of the program for seven years, the officials said...........

Phoenix police department helped Obama gun-toters, host says

By John Byrne
In a stunning revelation, an online radio host who interviewed an assault-weapon wielding protester outside President Barack Obama’s healthcare event in Arizona said on Tuesday that the Phoenix police department abetted the effort to interview the protester and knew that he planned to carry a gun outside the event.

Speaking on CNN, radio host Ernest Hancock discussed the fact that he’d met with police just days before.

“We worked with the Phoenix police department,” Hancock said, according to a transcript. “They came down to our studio on Friday. We’ve gone through this with them for 15 years.

“They have a squad - used to be called the confrontation prevention squad, now called community service,” Hancock added. “We told them that we’re going to come down, I’m going to do the radio show live, we’re going to be broadcasting it, and I’m going to have a firearm. Law Requiring Ultrasounds for Abortions Is Struck Down
Oklahoma Judge Says Measure Violates State Constitution

Washington Post Staff Writer

An Oklahoma judge decided Tuesday that doctors do not need to perform ultrasounds and offer women detailed information about the tests before performing abortions, striking down the strictest such law in the country.

Oklahoma County District Judge Vicki L. Robertson ruled that the 2008 law, which included other abortion-related provisions, violated a state constitutional provision that requires laws to address only one subject............

Palin's Red Menace
By Richard Cohen

Try this on for size: Palinism. What is it? It is an updated version of McCarthyism, which takes its name from the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin liar, demagogue and drunk, and means, according to Wikipedia, "reckless, unsubstantiated accusations, as well as demagogic attacks on the character or patriotism of political adversaries." As far as we know, Sarah Palin is not a drunk.

But she certainly shares McCarthy's other attributes -- and this one as well: the ability to drive the debate. In McCarthy's day, it was anti-communism coupled with national security, and it hardly mattered that he frequently did not have his facts straight. He got huge amounts of attention anyway.

With Palin, the subject is health care, which in many ways is the Red Menace of our day and lends itself to a kind of political pornography. ..................

Huffington Post | Katherine Goldstein

PETA's new billboard campaign in Florida is raising eyebrows and ire among women and health groups. A drawing on billboards in Jacksonville depicts an obese woman with the phrase, "Save The Whales, Lose The Blubber: Go Vegetarian."

In a press release, PETA stated:

A new PETA billboard campaign that was just launched in Jacksonville reminds people who are struggling to lose weight -- and who want to have enough energy to chase a beach ball -- that going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep them from looking good in a bikini. This past weekend, at the right wing’s RightOnline blogger conference in Pittsburgh — sponsored by Americans for Prosperity — Alternet’s Adele Stan reported that Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher attacked Nancy Pelosi for calling teabaggers “un-American.” (In fact, Pelosi said “drowning out opposing views is un-American.”) Wurzelbacher said that in the good ol’ days, he would have been able to physically “beat” Pelosi:..........

Mental Stress Training Is Planned for U.S. Soldiers
By BENEDICT CAREY

PHILADELPHIA — The Army plans to require that all 1.1 million of its soldiers take intensive training in emotional resiliency, military officials say.

The training, the first of its kind in the military, is meant to improve performance in combat and head off the mental health problems, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide, that plague about one-fifth of troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Active-duty soldiers, reservists and members of the National Guard will receive the training, which will also be available to their family members and to civilian employees.

The new program is to be introduced at two bases in October and phased in gradually throughout the service, starting in basic training. It is modeled on techniques that have been tested mainly in middle schools.......

Police on the scene were standing right next to the gentleman and were keeping a close eye on him. He's well behind a security barrier outside the convention center in a crowd of protesters.

A second man, who appeared to be interviewing some of the protesters, also had a pistol strapped to his leg. He was also being watched by police.

To reiterate, there appears to be NO CAUSE FOR SERIOUS CONCERN from local authorities on scene.

Dick Armey fact check: MoveOn did not run Bush-Hitler ad

-- Stephen C. Webster

MSNBC's liberal anchor Rachel Maddow took to Meet the Press on Sunday morning for a debate over health care reform, but ended up correcting a grievous misstatement by former Republican Majority Leader Dick Armey.

In his opening remarks, Armey claimed that Democratic activist group MoveOn.org had "ran those ads" comparing President George W. Bush to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Armey's group FreedomWorks has stayed busy as of late by promoting Democratic lawmakers' town hall meetings and encouraging "forceful" displays against President Barack Obama's allegedly "socialist" health insurance reforms.

Maddow, who has been on a roll in the fight against health insurance reform misinformation, was quick to provide a counter-weight.

"They didn't," she said, shaking her head. "They never ran an ad that compared..."

"You're gonna get a chance to talk," he said with a smile. "I just looked at the MoveOn.org ad ... It ... It was a horrible thing."

(The ad he's speaking about was later linked by FreedomWorks, without qualification.)

Later in the discussion, Meet the Press host David Gregory asked Armey if he would repudiate Nazi imagery as applied to President Barack Obama............

New Jersey Homeowner Calls Cops on Bob Dylan

Forty Years After Woodstock, Bob Dylan Is Mistaken for a Homeless Man

Bob Dylan was detained by police in Long Branch, N.J. last month, when a young officer failed to recognize him, police said. The officer proceeded to go to earnest lengths to ensure the hooded, disheveled, rain-soaked music legend was, in fact, who he said he was.

Dylan, 68, one of the most celebrated, eccentric artists in American history, was in the area on July 23 as part of a national concert tour -- a fact lost on 24-year-old Long Branch police officer Kristie Buble.

To hear the young New Jersey police officer describe it, the scene was like something out of one of Dylan's epic song-poems: It was pouring rain, Dylan was soaked and wandering alone, far from the traveling home of his entourage of tour buses.

When Dylan wandered into the yard of a home that had a "For Sale" sign on it, the home's occupants became spooked by his appearance and called police with a report of an "eccentric-looking old man" in their yard, Long Branch Police said. One of the occupants even went so far as to follow Dylan as he continued on down the street........

Congressman: 'I've got facts, you've got Glenn Beck'
-- Stephen C. Webster

When Congressman Rick Larsen (D-WA) took his health care forum to the pitcher's mound on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium in Everett, Washington, of course he expected detractors to be lobbing hard balls.

But when a woman began literally reading a list of scary-yet-false claims about the president's health care proposals -- concluding with, "I'm unwilling to throw my health insurance away for them" (meaning the poor) -- Larsen took a deep breath.

First, he clarified that nobody will be forced to buy health care or change their current policies. Then he broke through to his real point: "Some folks will say that's not true. But, I've got facts on my side, you've got Glenn Beck on your side."........
