Law Requiring Ultrasounds for Abortions Is Struck Down
Oklahoma Judge Says Measure Violates State Constitution

Washington Post Staff Writer

An Oklahoma judge decided Tuesday that doctors do not need to perform ultrasounds and offer women detailed information about the tests before performing abortions, striking down the strictest such law in the country.

Oklahoma County District Judge Vicki L. Robertson ruled that the 2008 law, which included other abortion-related provisions, violated a state constitutional provision that requires laws to address only one subject............

Fears for abortion doc after US Marshals remove protection

By Daniel Tencer

As the battle over the future of late-term abortions in Kansas heats up, reproductive-rights groups are scrambling to restore federal protection to the abortion doctor who wants to replace the late Dr. George Tiller.

Dr. Leroy Carhart of Nebraska, who has announced his intention to take the place of the assassinated Dr. Tiller in providing late-term abortions to Kansas residents, had his U.S. Marshals protection pulled two weeks ago, says a report at the reproductive health news site RHRealityCheck.org..........

On Nixon Tapes, Ambivalence Over Abortion
By CHARLIE SAVAGE
WASHINGTON — On Jan. 23, 1973, when the Supreme Court struck down laws criminalizing abortion in Roe v. Wade, President Richard M. Nixon made no public statement. But privately, newly released tapes reveal, he expressed ambivalence.

Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness,” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases — like interracial pregnancies, he said.

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding, “Or a rape.”............

this is what it was like here

and i don't EVER want it to go back to being like this. i want every woman to have a choice. it's THEIR choice. not a domestic terrorist's who takes a gun and kills a doctor just because the terrorist didn't like what the doctor was LEGALLY DOING. so very much to say. how the domestic terrorists don't give a flying fuck once a child is actually born. really, come on now. we all know they don't give a shite.

i want every woman every where to be safe. to be educated in an all around and complete sex education program. to have birth control available to her. to have health care for her, for her when she is pregnant and for her AND her children. i want anyone who rapes a woman (a crime of POWER NOT of sex. yet people also say sex crime. it's NOT. it's violence for power) to be punished. i also want ALL domestic terrorists to be locked away forever. they're sick and the god they claim to believe in is in fact not a god at all

so please - WE NEVER WANT TO GO BACK TO THIS:
The Deadly Toll of Abortion by Amateurs
By DENISE GRADY
BEREGA, Tanzania — A handwritten ledger at the hospital tells a grim story. For the month of January, 17 of the 31 minor surgical procedures here were done to repair the results of “incomplete abortions.” A few may have been miscarriages, but most were botched operations by untrained, clumsy hands. Abortion is illegal in Tanzania (except to save the mother’s life or health), so women and girls turn to amateurs, who may dose them with herbs or other concoctions, pummel their bellies or insert objects vaginally. Infections, bleeding and punctures of the uterus or bowel can result, and can be fatal. Doctors treating women after these bungled attempts sometimes have no choice but to remove the uterus...........

(and here's a whole slide show)

COMPLICATIONS A woman in Berega, Tanzania, who sought care after a botched abortion. In Tanzania, where abortion is illegal, the maternal death rate is high in part because of failed abortions.

oh no they didn't

oh effing YES they did. and by the way, IF the rapist went to confession HE WOULD BE FORGIVEN and oh by the way again, you don't get excommunicated for rape

oh fuck them

(they wanted a NINE YEAR OLD GIRL to bear twins)

Catholic Church Excommunicates Mother and Doctors Over 9-Year-Old Rape Victim’s Abortion

Posted by: Cara

In Brazil, there is a horrific story of a 9-year-old girl who was raped and impregnated (h/t Falloch’s comment). It’s believed that the rape was committed by her step-father. The girl was not only pregnant at that young age, but also pregnant with twins. And so, as makes perfect sense, she had an abortion. Because she was raped, because she was much to young to have a child, and because the stress of having twins would of course have been far too much for a 9-year-old’s body to handle. And she could have died.

Now, the Catholic Church has excommunicated both the girl’s mother and the doctors who performed the abortion, which likely saved the girl’s life.

Well then. At least they didn’t excommunicate the girl, right? Maybe they decided that she was much too young to have made the decision to have the abortion on her own, or to understand what was happening. But not too young, apparently, to be forced to give birth to the twins caused by her rapist. Not too young to quite possibly die in the process.................

wwjd?

certainly NOT what the right 'reverend' newman is doing

judge, jury AND executioner

oh, and this is SOME separation of church and state too. PLUS and a BIG PLUS it is, it's none of his fucking bid-nez who the fuck his parishioners voted for

sort of wondering if the 'n' word is on the tip of this dude's tongue too.

did a search on the mighty one who judges others (wonder how he feels about pedophiles? wonder how he supports babies born to people who can't care for them?) he's an 'evangelical catholic'. sort of makes sense. and NO i'm not going to link to his site. fuck him

SC priest: No communion for Obama supporters
By MEG KINNARD, Associated Press Writer

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

"Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exists constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law................

oh goddess help us all

i didn't know about what happened in west german in the 1980s. i sure as shite am going to do EVERYTHING within my power to make sure it NEVER EVER EVER EVER happens here. it couldn't you say? look what else has happened and is happening here that you thought never could

i want the right of CHOICE for ALL of my sisters. their bodies are their own. we can NOT let someone else's ideas rape our bodies

If Roe Goes, Our State Will Be Worse Than You Think

By Linda Hirshman

In the 1980s, when abortion was severely limited in then-West Germany, border guards sometimes required German women returning from foreign trips to undergo vaginal examinations to make sure that they hadn't illegally terminated a pregnancy while they were abroad. According to news stories and other accounts, the guards would stop young women and ask them about drugs, then look for evidence of abortion, such as sanitary pads or nightgowns, in their cars, and eventually force them to undergo a medical examination -- as West German law empowered them to do.

Sounds like a nightmare of a police state, doesn't it? Like something that could never happen in this day and age -- and certainly not in the United States? But depending upon the outcome of this presidential election, it could happen here. This is how.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain opposes abortion, believing that life begins at conception. Imagine that he's elected to the White House and, not long after, one of the aging Supreme Court justices dies or resigns..........

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

once again, i'll just state MY position here. i'm NOT pro abortion. never was, never will be. what i AM is pro COMPREHENSIVE sex education and pro contraception. oh, and i'm also pro CHOICE. if you don't want to have an abortion, i support your right to NOT have one. if you try to stop me or my sisters from having one IF we want one, (as big maybelle says) YOU BETTER WATCH OUT

anyway, i don't think this story is out of the ordinary at all. i think it happens ALL of the time
Pro-Life Congressional Candidate Drove Ex-GF to Abortion Clinic

Woman details abortion, relationship with "pro-life" congressional candidate

What a charmer. The Oregonian reports that Congressional candidate Mike Erickson fabricates a bunch of bull how he didn't know he gave his girlfriend money for an abortion, how she wasn't his girlfriend, and how he stopped seeing her after the "doctor's appointment" he drove her to. Lies, lies.

What's funniest to me is that if he came clean and said "I made a choice that hurt me and that's why I became pro-life," he'd sound reasonable. But instead he's chosen to act like his ex-girlfriend's experience is untrue when there's documented evidence she had the procedure and that he continued to see her afterwards..................

never

never ever again.
never
i will NOT allow roe v. wade to be taken away. i will do EVERYTHING in my power to keep abortion safe AND LEGAL.
(what i prefer of course is COMPREHENSIVE SEX EDUCATION. REAL comprehensive sex education. NOT ABSTINENCE ONLY PREACHING. i believe with my whole heart and soul we could cure MOST of the ills of the world with education. it starts there and can only grow. more education, less unwanted pregnancies)

Repairing the Damage, Before Roe

By WALDO L. FIELDING, M.D.
With the Supreme Court becoming more conservative, many people who support women’s right to choose an abortion fear that Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that gave them that right, is in danger of being swept aside.

When such fears arise, we often hear about the pre-Roe “bad old days.” Yet there are few physicians today who can relate to them from personal experience. I can.

I am a retired gynecologist, in my mid-80s. My early formal training in my specialty was spent in New York City, from 1948 to 1953, in two of the city’s large municipal hospitals.

There I saw and treated almost every complication of illegal abortion that one could conjure, done either by the patient herself or by an abortionist — often unknowing, unskilled and probably uncaring. Yet the patient never told us who did the work, or where and under what conditions it was performed. She was in dire need of our help to complete the process or, as frequently was the case, to correct what damage might have been done.

The patient also did not explain why she had attempted the abortion, and we did not ask. This was a decision she made for herself, and the reasons were hers alone. Yet this much was clear: The woman had put herself at total risk, and literally did not know whether she would live or die.........

i don't frighten easily

these fuck wads scare me. i could go on and on about birth control. i could go on and on about abstinance. i could go on and on about the VERY mentally ill who say things like the pill kills babies. i won't. i don't have to

Just in case you still had any doubts about the anti-choice movement's true agenda, the American Life League is letting it all hang out with their latest campaign: The Pill Kills!
From Christina Page at RH Reality Check:
On June 7th, the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that gave married people the right to use contraception, the American Life League, along with Pro-Life Wisconsin and Pharmacists for Life International Associate groups want you to join them in protesting in front of facilities that distribute birth control products. The national day against contraception, Protest the Pill Day '08: The Pill Kills Babies, was started to convince the American people of a simple and imaginative idea: attempting to prevent abortion is abortion too.
The campaign basically says that birth control pills kill babies (yes, seriously) and that pro-choice groups and health care centers like Planned Parenthood are only touting birth control to make lots and lots of money. (Because as we all know, there's nothing more lucrative than offering low-to-no cost reproductive health care.).............

can you imagine a public health school

that doesn't allow for the use of the word 'abortion'? this is 2008, right? this is america right? abstinence? it F**KING DOESN'T WORK. if proper COMPREHENSIVE sex education was taught (and practiced) there would be very little need for abortion indeed!
Health site blocked 'abortion' searches
Johns Hopkins Health Web Site Restores 'Abortion' As Allowable Search Term

A prominent public health school has restored the word "abortion" as an acceptable search term on a reproductive health Web site funded by a federal agency that restricts references to abortions. The move by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health follows criticism from some health advocates and librarians that the restriction amounted to censorship.
The restriction on the POPLINE Web site — "population information online" — had been put in place after inquiries by the United States Agency for International Development, which funds the site, according to a statement from Dr. Michael J. Klag, the dean of the Bloomberg school.
USAID denies funding to non-governmental organizations that perform or actively promote abortion as a methods of family planning in other nations. The policy was started under President Ronald Reagan and was revived when President Bush took office in 2001.
"I could not disagree more strongly with this decision, and I have directed that the POPLINE administrators restore 'abortion' as a search term immediately," Klag said in a statement. "The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and not its restriction."
USAID officials did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment Saturday............

instead of standing in front of clinics

that provide reproductive, abortion, birth control and other gynocological services - taking pictures of and invading the privacy of women who enter those clinics, WHY DON'T YOU STAND IN FRONT OF CLINICS AND DOCTORS OFFICES THAT PROVIDE VIAGRA?

you believe sex is NOT good nor should it be fun. you believe sex is for PROCREATION ONLY. most (no, not all) men who seek viagra are of the age where they and their legally wed opposite gender spouse are well over child bearing age. i think that's OUTREAGOUS. they should NOT BE SEEKING ERECTIONS. ERECTIONS LEAD TO SEX (or at the very least the spewing of seed) and SEX SHOULD ONLY LEAD TO PROCREATION. period
so stand in front of THOSE doctor's offices and harass them and take pictures of THEM and THEIR families and threaten them and their patients and their patients families
Abortion provider must turn over files
By Stephanie Simon, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
One of the nation's few late-term abortion doctors was ordered Wednesday to turn over about 2,000 patient medical records to a Kansas grand jury investigating his practice.Abortion opponents hope that the records will lead to further criminal charges against Dr. George Tiller, who already is facing 19 misdemeanor counts stemming from late-second and third-trimester abortions at his clinic in Wichita.Tiller's lawyers say he scrupulously follows the law. They plan to ask the Kansas Supreme Court to overturn a state district court judge's ruling that Tiller begin handing over files as early as today."It's an unprecedented encroachment upon a woman's right to privacy," attorney Dan Monnat said.Monnat was joined in court by a lawyer from the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights, who filed affidavits from three patients demanding that their medical records remain private. Even though the judge ordered names and addresses removed from the files, the patients said they feared their identities could be deduced from details about their families and medical histories. The antiabortion group Operation Rescue has given the grand jury several photos that it says show pregnant women entering Tiller's clinic; the same pictures are posted online, with the women's faces blurred."Even thinking about the possibility of anti-choice extremists identifying me has caused my partner and I great distress," one woman wrote. The unfolding legal dispute treads familiar ground..........

and here is what is happening

because no one has the stones to impeach king george and the big dick and the rest of their court. women are dying. women are NOT educated about contraceptives. women only get ONE SIDE - ABSTINANCE.

Are U.S. Policies Killing Women?
By Michele Kort, Ms. Magazine
Even as we commemorate the landmark 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade this year, U.S. reproductive-health policies are having an inordinately negative effect outside of our borders. They're causing women to die or be maimed. Harsh words, but true.
For the past 24 years, except during the Clinton presidency, U.S. administrations have maintained a global gag rule against providing counseling or referrals for abortions at U.S.-funded clinics in developing nations. It's a rule that only thwarts safe abortions, while reducing the already limited availability of other family-planning services. The global gag rule has also led to a pullback in overseas delivery of contraceptives, according to recent testimony by Rep. Nita M. Lowey (D-N.Y.) before the House Foreign Affairs Committee:
"U.S. shipments of contraceptives have ceased to 20 developing nations in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. In some areas, the largest distribution centers for contraceptives have experienced decreased access for over 50 percent of the women they serve."
Women's health and rights activists in the U.S. have spent the past two decades fighting against such actions, and advocating on behalf of global reproductive health issues. But progress has come slowly. While maternal mortality has been declining at 1 percent annually, it needs to decline by 5.5 percent a year in order to be three-quarters reduced by 2015 (one of the United Nation's Millenium Development Goals). Sounds like a lot -- but it would require just about $6.1 billion more in annual funding -- the price of three weeks of the Iraq war -- to achieve that goal. Without that commitment, more than 500,000 women will still die annually from childbirth and its complications, with an estimated 70,000 of those deaths due to unsafe abortions..........

it is january 22nd. blog for choice day

Blog for Choice Day

and it is the anniversary of roe v. wade. this year we've been asked why we 'vote' pro choice. well i don't think of myself as 'voting' pro choice. i just think of myself as PRO CHOICE. NO, NOT PRO ABORTION. PRO CHOICE. there is a great difference. i don't advocate abortion. i do advocate birth control and reproductive EDUCATION.

however, when a woman chooses to have an abortion, it is her right to do so. it is her right to feel safe doing so. it is her right for that choice to remain PRIVATE if it is her decision to have it so. it is her right to have a choice if there are health reasons (hers or that of the fetus). it is her right to have a choice if there are circumstances which may make having a child a tragedy. it is her choice and should be respected. it is her choice and NOT some old white rich dude's choice. it is HER choice and not YOUR GOD'S choice.

in almost all cases it is not an easy choice. but it is HER choice to make. it is HER BODY and HER MIND AND HER HEART.

we must never let back room abortions take place again. we must protect this choice we have and not let it be taken away by those who speak false words and judge us as evil. (by the way even those that 'oppose' choice have had abortions. they keep it deeply hidden because of the stigma they perceive. they keep it deeply hidden because of how their families and their men will react. well we all know many many many women who have made the choice to terminate a pregnancy. and yes, they DO come from all walks of life. all religions and all political views)

it's MY choice and i'm not letting YOU or anyone else take it from me

more on my favorite presidential candidate

and by favorite i mean the one that i spend the most attention on because of his LUDICROUS beliefs and statements (plus he has chuck norris on his side. need i say more?)

Mike Huckabee: Homosexual behavior 'is a choice'
David Edwards and Katie Baker
According to presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, homosexual behavior is a choice.
"We may have certain tendencies, but [we choose] how we behave and how we carry out our behavior," Huckabee said in an interview Sunday with Tim Russert of MSNBC's "Meet the Press."
Huckabee is known for his controversial remarks regarding homosexuality; as Russert reminded him, Huckabee once said he felt it was a "aberrant, unnatural and sinful lifestyle."
Although Huckabee asked Russert to understand that "when a Christian speaks of sin, a Christian says all of us are sinners," he asserted that "the perfection of God is seen in a marriage in which one man, one woman live together as a couple committed to each other as life partners."..........

................He believes that a ban on abortion would not be an example of imposing his faith on Americans, but that his pro-life stance is "a human belief. It goes to the heart of who we are as a civilization."
"If you take the life and suction out the pieces of an unborn child for no reason than its inconvenience to the mother, I don't think you've lived up to your Hippocratic Oath of doing no harm," Huckabee said.
Therefore, he said he would support "sanctioning" doctors who perform abortions..............

this is what happens

and everyone knows it
i am NOT preaching on a soapbox that women SHOULD have abortions. what i AM preaching is women MUST HAVE THE CHOICE
Pregnancy deaths increase after abortion ban in Nicaragua

David Edwards and Adam Doster
Under Nicaragua's no-exception abortion ban implemented last year, researchers say that at least three women have died because of complications during pregnancy, while 12 reported cases have yet been analyzed.

The Associated Press detailed the story of one victim, 22-year old Olga Reyes. In her case, the fetus grew outside of her uterus and was unable to survive, prompting excessive bleeding that eventually endangered the mother.

Reyes' husband expressed concern over the limitations Nicaraguan doctors face. "Doctors feel if they interrupt a pregnancy, their liscenses can be revoked," he said through a translator. "They are threatened."

The law was passed last year with support from institutions like the Roman Catholic Church, which asserts that medical advances, not abortion, can alleviate complications of pregnancy...............

these are the sorts of people i am most afraid of

you know what, don't even bother reading what i wrote. go on over to the accidental housewife she says it MUCH better than i even could dream it

these who have power and have no cares about me, my family, my friends, my body, my children, MY decisions.

they don't 'believe' in abortions. they don't think it's my RIGHT to have one if i so choose. YET, they do NOT want to take care of the children that ARE born. they don't care if they are fed or educated or get health care. their caring STOPS at the moment of birth.

tell me what's wrong with THAT picture?
GOP '08 Candidate Huckabee Insanely Compares Abortion to the Holocaust
Posted by GottaLaff at 5:15 PM on October 20, 2007.
GottaLaff: Holy mother of idiots, just stop.

This post, written by GottaLaff, originalyl appeared on Cliff Schecter's Brave New Films Blog
I'm speechless (and for me, that's saying something):
Speaking before a gathering of Christian conservative voters, GOP presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said legalized abortion in the United States was a holocaust.
Not the best analogy, Mike. "Offended" doesn't even begin to describe what I'm feeling.
"Sometimes we talk about why we're importing so many people in our workforce," the former Arkansas governor said. "It might be for the last 35 years, we have aborted more than a million people who would have been in our workforce had we not had the holocaust of liberalized abortion under a flawed Supreme Court ruling in 1973."
Mike Hack-abee, I don't know where to begin. To equate the right to choose and all the circumstances under which that might be necessary, to a holocaust...and all its implications? That's beyond wrong............................

9/11/07 - Convicted Terrorist Released from Federal Prison

Guest front pager Ann Rose is, among other things, a partner in the National Women’s Health Organization, a group of 5 abortion and family planning clinics in the Eastern and Southern United States. She is also the co-founder of Hot Flash Report. -- FC
Convicted anti-abortion terrorists
Don Benny Anderson, and brothers Matthew Moore and Wayne Moore, were released from jail and into a halfway house yesterday, September 11, 2007.
Don Benny Anderson was convicted in 1982 of kidnapping the owner of an abortion clinic and his wife in Illinois. The doctor was forced at gunpoint to make an audio recording urging then President Reagan to oppose abortion, even though Reagan already did. After 8 days in fearful captivity, the couple were released unharmed, but have remained relatively low profile since then. Anderson was released yesterday from Federal Prison into a halfway house near the clinic after spending 24 of his 30 year sentence in jail. The infamous
Army of God claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
While the media is obsessed with foreign terrorists and the Petreaus report and the fear of Iraq, Iran, AlQuida, Osama Bin Laden, and other boogey-men, these three bonafide convicted terrorists will be walking the streets. But wait, these dudes are "White Christians", so never mind. The chilling details of their crimes are below the fold............

anna quindlin brings up a good question

how much time?
(and i KNOW you'd be shocked at how many women would be in stir)

How Much Jail Time?

By Anna Quindlen
Newsweek
Aug. 6, 2007 issue - Buried among prairie dogs and amateur animation shorts on YouTube is a curious little mini-documentary shot in front of an abortion clinic in Libertyville, Ill. The man behind the camera is asking demonstrators who want abortion criminalized what the penalty should be for a woman who has one nonetheless. You have rarely seen people look more gobsmacked. It's as though the guy has asked them to solve quadratic equations. Here are a range of responses: "I've never really thought about it." "I don't have an answer for that." "I don't know." "Just pray for them.".............................

A new public-policy group called the National Institute for Reproductive Health wants to take this contradiction and make it the centerpiece of a national conversation, along with a slogan that stops people in their tracks: how much time should she do? If the Supreme Court decides abortion is not protected by a constitutional guarantee of privacy, the issue will revert to the states. If it goes to the states, some, perhaps many, will ban abortion. If abortion is made a crime, then surely the woman who has one is a criminal. But, boy, do the doctrinaire suddenly turn squirrelly at the prospect of throwing women in jail............................

another side effect in iraq

of couse this never even crossed my mind but it makes sense - that it would happen due to OUR illegal, unjust and immoral invasion of THEIR country

women and children are ALWAYS hurt

Report: Iraq Violence Leading to Abortions, Drug Abuse Among Civilians

Justin Rood Reports:

Pregnant Iraqi women who have been forced from their homes by worsening violence are obtaining illegal abortions because they are unable to get medical care for themselves and their unborn, according to a new report by a national humanitarian group.
A record number of Iraqis -- most of them women and children -- are fleeing their homes to escape the bloodshed of sectarian violence and anti-U.S. attacks, according to a new report by the Iraqi Red Crescent organization, the largest aid group operating in Iraq.
Health care is inadequate and difficult to access for those people, according to the IRC report.
"Pregnant women, infants and children are unable to get...required medical care," states the report, which was translated from Arabic, "and criminal abortion became [sic] the norms." .........
