someone needs a psych exam and it IS NOT ms fisher!

JUDGE ORDERS WORLD CAN'T WAIT ACTIVIST TO JAIL PSYCH UNIT

CAROL FISHER REMAINS STRONG AND UNAPOLOGETIC

May 9: Judge Timothy McGinty forcibly incarcerated Carol Fisher in the psych unit of the Cuyahoga County Jail in downtown Cleveland, where she now sits for an indefinite period of time.

In a hastily called hearing yesterday, Judge McGinty made a highly unusual and outrageous decision to force Carol to undergo a state psychological exam as part of her pre-sentencing investigation. From the very start of Carol's case, the judge has openly said that she must have mental problems for resisting an unlawful and brutal encounter with Cleveland Heights police. He went even further in yesterday's hearing, saying that her opposition to the Bush regime makes her "delusional."

The small courtroom on the 21st floor of the Justice Center was ringed with 5 armed court bailiffs. McGinty started off the hearing by making Carol stand up and had one of her attorneys read her t-shirt, which said:

"Wanted for Illegally Crossing Borders: The Bush Regime

"If you are going to insist that crossing borders illegally is a crime which cannot be tolerated, how about George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleezza Rice (and yes, Colin Powell) and the rest of that gang, with their highly illegal, and violent, 'crossing of the border'-into Iraq, among other places?!"

McGinty then said this was proof of her delusion! He also kept saying Carol "wants" to go to jail, and that she has a "martyr complex." When Carol tried to explain why she wouldn't take this test, the judge's only response was, "I do not negotiate with felons."......

Who, it may be asked, was Finnegan?

Friday May 12, 1939 The Guardian
Mr Joyce's Finnegans Wake, (Faber, 25s), parts of which have been published as "Work in Progress" does not admit of review.
In twenty years' time, with sufficient study and with the aid of the commentary that will doubtless arise, one might be ready for an attempt to appraise it.
The work is not written in English, or in any other language, as language is commonly known. I can detect words made up out of some eight or nine languages, but this must be only a part of the equipment employed. This polyglot element is only a minor difficulty, for Mr Joyce is using language in a new way: "Margaritomancy! Hyacinthous pervinciveness! Flowers. A cloud. But Bruto and Cassio are ware only of trifid tongues the whispered wilfulness ('tis demonal!) and shadows shadows multiplicating."

The easiest way to deal with the book would be to become "clever" and satirical or to write off Mr Joyce's latest volume as the work of a charlatan. But the author of Dubliners, A Portrait of an Artist and Ulysses is obviously not a charlatan, but an artist of very considerable proportions. I prefer to suspend judgement. What he is attempting, I imagine, is to employ language as a new medium, breaking down all grammatical usages, all time space values, all ordinary conceptions of context. Compared with this, Ulysses is a first-form primer............

a VERY thorough and a VERY good article on the flds in the la times

there is NOT a doubt in my mind this is all going on and has been for YEARS. there's not a doubt in my mind that no one has done anything about it either. i read somewhere NO ONE has actually been prosecuted for polygamy (in the fundamentalist morman church that is) for over 50 years. i don't care so much how many wives a man has. i DO care if they are underage AND i DO CARE about child sex abuse. as far as i'm concerned take on 100 wives. DO NOT TOUCH A CHILD for marriage OR for abuse. let's find those that do (in the flds AND anywhere else they exist and they DO exist elsewhere) and punish them to the FULL extent of the law. i am not a violent woman but my hackles rise when i even THINK about this type of thing. i also found out about the 'lost boys'. something i never knew. young boys, early teens 13 or so, tossed out of the sect so they won't be competition - so there are enough women to marry to the more senior men.

polygamy faq

When was the last anti-polygamy prosecution?
About 1953, the state of Arizona National Guard raided a polygamous colony called Short Creek on the Utah/Arizona border, and separated the kids from their mothers, and threw the men in jail. The people of the nation were so outraged by it, that there have not been polygamy prosecutions since. (Unless you want to consider Waco to be an anti-polygamous raid.) So while polygamy is not legal, the laws against it are not enforced.

THE ENCLAVE
Blind Eye to Culture of Abuse
Children of a polygamous sect have been exploited, molested for years.
By David Kelly and Gary Cohn, Times Staff Writers May 12, 2006
COLORADO CITY, Ariz. For half a century, while polygamous members of this remote enclave engaged in widespread sexual abuse and child exploitation, government authorities on all levels did little to intervene or protect generations of victims.
Here in the sparsely populated canyon lands straddling Arizona and Utah, members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or FLDS an offshoot of Mormonism live by their own rules. The religious sect of about 10,000 portrays itself as an industrious commune of the faithful, choosing to live apart from a hostile world. But their simple lifestyle and self-imposed isolation have concealed troubling secrets that are only beginning to emerge..........

...........Sam Round polygamist and former Colorado City police chief, moonlighted as a church security officer. He told investigators from the police standards boards of Arizona and Utah who were evaluating his training that between 20 and 25 times he failed to report child sex abuse cases as required by law.As a result, state child welfare agencies were often unaware of molestation allegations and unable to help or intervene on behalf of possible victims. Another result was the reluctance of victims to call police in the first place."I never once considered going to the police," said Sara Hammon, 30, who told of enduring years of sexual abuse at the hands of her father and brothers. ..........

and THIS (same article). how COULD they allow THIS to happen? thirteen days for REPEATED INCESTUOUS ABUSE of his five daughters?

......In 2001, Dan Barlow Jr., son of the Colorado City mayor, was charged with 14 counts of sexual abuse, accused of repeatedly molesting his five daughters, ages 12 to 19, over several years. According to the police report, Barlow confessed to the crimes.Letters begging for mercy poured into Ekstrom's office in Kingman, Ariz. The daughters expressed love for their father and asked that he not get any prison time. They also asked that they not be required to testify against him. FLDS member LeRoy Fischer said Barlow shouldn't be jailed because he was the only locksmith in town and "a prison sentence would only add an additional burden to society."Floyd Barlow, the defendant's son, said his abused sisters "look happy" and could get emotional help from their mother if necessary.Barlow was allowed to plead guilty to a single, lesser charge of sexual abuse, and was sentenced to 120 days in jail most of which was suspended. He served 13 days...................

sgt. jose gomez: death of a solider

Ruby Washington/The New York Times The coffin containing Sgt. Jose Gomez was carried from a funeral home in Corona, Queens, Wednesday, across the street from Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church.

a tragic yet moving tale. a tale of a son's love for his mother-a tale he told his mother of how he was going to school in texas instead of the truth-he was in iraq for his second tour of duty. a tale of a life for his country

Sympathy Flows at Soldier's Funeral in Queens

By MICHELLE O'DONNELL
At Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Corona, Queens, Mary, the mother of God, weeps at the feet of her son in the mural over the altar. Yesterday, Maria, the mother of Sgt. Jose Gomez of the United States Army, wept from her seat in the first pew.
"You, more than anyone, understand the pain of the mother of Christ," the Rev. Thomas Healy said in Spanish to Maria Gomez, whose slender shoulders slumped into the Army officer seated to her right as her husband, Felix Jimenez, wrapped an arm around her. "We are all with you in your pain."
But she was really alone and she seemed to know it, weeping and staring blankly at her son's coffin in the center aisle. She had brought him to the United States from the Dominican Republic when he was 3. Twenty years later, on April 20, he was killed by a roadside bomb in
Iraq, during a second tour of duty there.
His death came 31 months after his fiancée, Analaura Esparza-Gutierrez, 21, an Army private from Houston, was also killed by a roadside bombing in Tikrit, Iraq. Three springs ago, Sergeant Gomez had proposed to her. Now both were gone.
Yesterday, church and state rose up, each in its ritualistic glory, to honor the brief life and sudden death of Sergeant Gomez. Father Healy tenderly anointed his coffin with incense, and gave the young man his final blessings. The ladies of Corona — some in veils — filled the pews. Army officers flanked the right side of the church, and a two-star general presented Mrs. Gomez with the purple star and bronze star that President Bush had authorized her son to receive.
Yet it all seemed to do little to lessen the grief of Mrs. Gomez, who appeared to grow smaller as those by her side supported her.
The loss of Sergeant Gomez hit her especially hard because he had always strived to take care of his mother. He was saving to buy her a house. He had called home on April 19, the day before he died, to have flowers sent to her for Mother's Day.
And he had invented a tale that he was working and studying in Texas to hide the fact that he had been ordered to serve a second tour in Iraq, where the danger had been driven home by Private Esparza-Gutierrez's death............

...........At the church, Father Healy said he was concerned about Mrs. Gomez. He stood near the altar, below a statue of the Virgin of Sorrow.
"Twenty-five hundred of these around the country," he said. "Can you imagine?".........

HAVE 200,000 MISSING AK47S FALLEN INTO THE HANDS OF IRAQ TERRORISTS?
FEARS OVER SECRET U.S. ARMS SHIPMENT

By Emily Nash
SOME 200,000 guns the US sent to Iraqi security forces may have been smuggled to terrorists, it was feared yesterday.
The 99-tonne cache of AK47s was to have been secretly flown out from a US base in Bosnia. But the four planeloads of arms have vanished.
Orders for the deal to go ahead were given by the US Department of Defense. But the work was contracted out via a complex web of private arms traders.
And the Moldovan airline used to transport the shipment was blasted by the UN in 2003 for smuggling arms to Liberia, human rights group Amnesty has discovered.
It follows a separate probe claiming that thousands of guns meant for Iraq's police and army instead went to al-Qaeda
Amnesty chief spokesman Mike Blakemore said: "It's unbelievable that no one can account for 200,000 assault rifles. If these weapons have gone missing it's a terrifying prospect." American defence chiefs hired a US firm to take the guns, from the 90s Bosnian war, to Iraq.

But air traffic controllers in Baghdad have no record of the flights, which supposedly took off between July 2004 and July 2005. A coalition forces spokesman confirmed they had not received "any weapons from Bosnia" and added they were "not aware of any purchases for Iraq from Bosnia". Nato and US officials have already voiced fears that Bosnian arms - sold by US, British and Swiss firms - are being passed to insurgents. .......

NSA has massive database of Americans' phone calls

By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY
The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.
The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren't suspected of any crime.
This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews............

.........The White House would not discuss the domestic call-tracking program. "There is no domestic surveillance without court approval," said Dana Perino, deputy press secretary, referring to actual eavesdropping.
She added that all national intelligence activities undertaken by the federal government "are lawful, necessary and required for the pursuit of al-Qaeda and affiliated terrorists." All government-sponsored intelligence activities "are carefully reviewed and monitored," Perino said. She also noted that "all appropriate members of Congress have been briefed on the intelligence efforts of the United States." ............

Ex-NSA Chief Assails Bush Taps
By Noah Shachtman

NEW YORK -- Former National Security Agency director Bobby Ray Inman lashed out at the Bush administration Monday night over its continued use of warrantless domestic wiretaps, making him one of the highest-ranking former intelligence officials to criticize the program in public, analysts say.
"This activity is not authorized," Inman said, as part of a
panel discussion on eavesdropping that was sponsored by The New York Public Library. The Bush administration "need(s) to get away from the idea that they can continue doing it."
Since the NSA eavesdropping program was unveiled in December, Inman -- like other senior members of the intelligence community -- has been measured in the public statements he's made about the agency he headed under President Jimmy Carter. He
maintained that his former colleagues "only act in accordance with law." When asked whether the president had the legal authority to order the surveillance, Inman replied in December, "Someone else would have to give you the good answer."
But sitting in a brightly lit basement auditorium at the library next to James Risen, the New York Times reporter who
broke the surveillance story, Inman's tone changed. He called on the president to "walk into the modern world" and change the law governing the wiretaps -- or abandon the program altogether.....

moms

well moms of the animal kingdom that is

i saw a show called
growing up wolf (they have different ones, growing up bear, etc) on animal planet on monday. this sanctuary raises wolves (i guess) to re-populate the species. i didn't see the very beginning so i don't quite understand the next part. a few wolves gave birth (they had cameras in the dens) and the humans came in and took a few (six) of the pups. the intention was to hand raise them for four months then return the pups to the pack. the only reason i can see to do that is so these six wolves are used to humans. the females that bore the litters were artificially inseminated. the initial human contact may facilitate later contact (well that is my theory).

anyway, this sanctuary was run by peggy callahan whom i believe is some type of biologist. her husband is also a biologist and helped to hand raise the pups. they have a very young daughter and she was around playing with the pups as well. THE BEST part was they had 26 or 29 (i have forgotten) dogs around that ALSO helped to raise the pups. even the male dogs took over surrogate mothering duties. (the dogs were all rescued and most of them were shepherds but not all. even saw one dog in the pack with three legs!). when those little tiny wolf-lings started to howl in their little tiny wolf-ling voices it brought a tear to my eye. (toward the ending of the show when the pups are about four months old and are in a pen outside, the pack of dogs is hanging around the pen and peggy comes out and starts to howl then all of the pups AND dogs start to howl. WOW WOW and WOW)

little by little the pups were weaned away from living indoors with the family eventually living outdoors all of the time. soon thereafter, they were put in an enclosed pen next to the huge enclosure the pack lived in. the dominant female, rosalind (a white wolf who was NOT one of the mothers) was a worry to peggy. she (rosalind) had killed her own father to seal her status as alpha female in the pack. maya (i have forgotten her name, but it did begin with an m) was one of the mothers whose pups were initially taken away. she cried daily for the return of her pups and when they were placed in the adjoining pen she went nuts (happily that is). the next day the pups were CAUTIOUSLY released into the pack enclosure under the watchful eyes of the staff of the facility. immediately maya ran to her pups and began mothering them. everyone was afraid rosalind might kill the pups. she came over and disciplined all of the pups grabbing them in her mouth but NEVER biting any of them. they immediately knew who the alpha female was and took the proper submissive actions. as it turned out rosalind took over mothering and poor maya was disciplined every time she tried to attend to her pups. when a pup went near her she would sneer and chase it off. it was rather sad BUT THEN, after a bit of time, rosalind had her hands (or paws as it were) full and every once in a while a pup would sneak off to it's real mother, maya. she and the pups were able to bond too.

yesterday, i found this story in the new york times
One Thing They Aren't: Maternal and i learned a thing or two. most of it wasn't new but a few tidbits were

you MUST see the photographs accompanying the article. amazing! they're rather reminiscing of the lovely mr shock or the equally lovely mr shakespeare

Oh, mothers! Dear noble, selfless, tender and ferocious defenders of progeny all across nature's phylogeny: How well you deserve our admiration as Mother's Day draws near, and how photogenically you grace the greeting cards that we thrifty offspring will send in lieu of a proper gift.
Here is a mother guinea hen, trailed by a dozen cotton-ball chicks. Here a mother panda and a baby panda share a stalk of bamboo, while over there, a great black eagle dam carries food to her waiting young. We love you, Mom, you're our port in the storm. You alone help clip Mother Nature's bloodstained claws.
But wait. That guinea hen is walking awfully fast. In fact, her brood cannot quite keep up with her, and by the end of the day, whoops, only two chicks still straggle behind. And the mama panda, did she not give birth to twins? So why did just one little panda emerge from her den? As for the African black eagle, her nest is less a Hallmark poem than an
Edgar Allan Poe. The mother has gathered prey in abundance, and has hyrax carcasses to spare. Yet she feeds only one of her two eaglets, then stands by looking bored as the fattened bird repeatedly pecks its starving sibling to death. ..........

Oh Jacob what a VERY sad story indeed. HOWEVER, I too have some sad news. I was just diagnosed with a terminal illness. Since you have had so much bad news in your life of late, I will not go into further detail about that. I wish to spare you as much as I can. Since I am all alone at this point in my life, I do need to tell you a few other things. One is, my dog was run over by a car two days ago and I am still reeling over that horrid incident. It didn't help that I was the one driving the car at the time. I swear to you Jacob HE USUALLY MOVES out of the way! This time he just didn't. I have a bad back and he weighed 147 pounds but I bent over and dragged him into the back yard. I dug a hole as best as I could and I threw his body in there. By the time I filled in the grave, I could barely stand up. I had to call the police to help me and they called me an ambulance. I was rushed to the hospital where I had several tests done. They also gave me a very big needle (it looked like it was at least six inches long) in my spine. I got a big headache after that Jacob. I wish I had some family to comfort me. When my latest husband died (he was my fifth. The four before him died too. I just have NO luck with men at all) he left me a great deal of money. Since I disowned my children I have no one to share it with. Oh let me get back to my story. In the hospital I got so sick from my headache that the big needle gave me, I vomited all over. It got on me and the bed and the walls and the floor. Oh it was a BIG mess Jacob. I was so sick! Anyway Jacob, they let me go home the next day. I had to have my houseman pick me up. His name is Raul and he works for me and lives above the garage. He was off the day I hit that stupid dog. I let him take the day off because he said something about someone being in trouble. What an idiot I was to listen to him and let him go that day! Boy was I ever sorry! I hired him when my husband first got sick to help me out around the house. He comes from El Salvador or Guatamala or San Salvador or someplace where they speak that mexican language. I don't understand him half of the time, but he is big and strong and he helps me out with the yard and the pool and if I need his help inside the house he will do whatever I ask. Do you know who Fabio is? He sort of looks like Fabio but with black wavy hair. I guess he is handsome if you go for that type. You know what I"m talking about Jacob, don't you? Sometimes I do get very lonely and I do ask him to come in the house even when I don't have too much for him to do. Sometimes I have a drink and I make him have a drink too. Sometimes I don't remember what happens but I always wake up in my bed. Any way Jacob, I disowned my children because they are ungrateful selfish children Jacob. All they want is money money money. I am sure you know the type. I am sure you have come across such people in your life too. I cannot stand them. I do want to share all of my money with someone. Someone who understands me and since I will not be alive too much longer, I wish I had someone in my life. I live in Alabama Jacob. Do you know where that is? We have a lot of trees and very big houses in my section. It has the right kind of people living there if you know what I mean and I think you do. I can tell from your letter you are a good man. You are a man of God. Jacob I do not feel good right now. I think I have the vapors. I think I have to go lay down. I think I have to call Raul in to help me. Jacob, I will tell you this Jacob, and I MEAN this from the very bottom of my heart Jacob, MAY YOU GET EXACTLY WHAT YOU DESERVE

May your God bless you Jacob and watch over you. I am sorry you are an orphan

those damn pheromones!

not that i think this is a funny story (well i do a bit, it's odd) BUT that headline sure did make me laugh. i can see these butch brains in workboots and flannels. too bad i'm not at home where my paint shop is (there's always another day)

Lesbians' brains respond like straight men

.............Heterosexual women found the male and female pheromones about equally pleasant, while straight men and lesbians liked the female pheromone more than the male one. Men and lesbians also found the male hormone more irritating than the female one, while straight women were more likely to be irritated by the female hormone than the male one................

i'm sure you can guess how i feel about 'canned' hunting

well hunting in general, but i WON'T preach about the hunting in general JUST the canned

here is a previous posting i did . a bunch of sick f**ks is what i think

"Canned Hunting" Ban Proposed in South Africa

Leon Marshall in Johannesburgfor National Geographic News
May 8, 2006
The South African government last week moved to ban the practice of "canned hunting"—in which trophy hunters pay steep fees to shoot tame or drugged predators released in small enclosures.
The ban is included in tough legislation announced by South Africa's minister of environmental affairs and tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, during a news briefing at the De Wildt Cheetah Research Center in the Northwest Province (see a map of South Africa).

The newly proposed laws aim to rid the country's lucrative wildlife industry of unethical hunting and breeding practices. They also call for stiff fines and jail sentences of up to five years.
The draft regulations ban "intensive breeding of listed large predators—like cheetahs, lions, leopards, and wild dogs—for any purpose of hunting or sale for hunting," van Schalkwyk said at the briefing. ...........

to my prince charming - I PLEDGE I'M A WEER GIN

there is not too very much to say other than i just don't get it. i dont' get virginity pledges (IF you choose to remain a virgin, that is YOUR decision and i'll respect it BUT don't be taking a crappy pledge because i for one don't care AND i don't believe you either. if you need to make it public, i suspect you have some issues). MOST of all i don't get the BORN AGAIN virgin pledges. chances are if ya did it ONCE, yer gonna do it AGAIN.

virginity pledges

Published by Amanda Marcotte May 8th, 2006 in Sex, Education
Like Tbogg says, lying about sex is as American as baseball and apple pie. A quick perusal of the culture of virginity fetishism will tell you that it’s a system where there’s a great deal of incentive to lie and not really much incentive to tell the truth. After all, if you pledge to stay a virgin, you get a lot of attention and some nice jewelry and if that pledge is a lie, it’s not like anyone is going to finding out you’re fucking on the sly. But on top of that, a recent study shows that the main issue with virginity pledges is they are easily made but also easily broken............

from the harvard study:

"Virginity Pledges" by Adolescents May Bias Their Reports of Premarital Sex

...........Recanting sexual experience: Almost one-third of non-virgins in the first survey who later took a virginity pledge recanted their experience with sexual intercourse in the second survey. Adolescents who took virginity pledges or who later became born-again Christians were more likely to repudiate their earlier reports of having been sexually active. Of teens who reported a sexual experience at the first survey, those who later took a virginity pledge were four times as likely to retract reports of sexual experience as those who still had not taken a pledge at the second survey.Recanting virginity pledges: The analysis also found that 52 percent of adolescent virginity pledgers in the 1995 survey disavowed the virginity pledge at the next survey a year later. Additionally, 73 percent of virginity pledgers from the first survey who subsequently reported sexual intercourse denied in the second survey that they had ever pledged. Adolescents who end their affiliation with born-again Christianity or who had sexual intercourse were the groups most likely to deny their virginity pledges.............

what i'm working on now

here are a couple of the things i'm working on now.

my sock of course (the first i've ever knit). i made sure i got a picture of where i knit the stitch marker RIGHT INTO the sock. (it's at the point where the green meets the blue stripe)i'm a real card, i am! (i'm not worried, it's plastic and i'll just cut it out IF i ever finish). i've not touched it in a while so we'll see when the next time i pick it up is.

an illusion skull scarf for my friend pete. if you look at it straight on, it's just stripes, HOWEVER if you look at it at a certain angle - BANG - A SKULL. five more repetitions to go! i may reverse the color scheme on the next panel and alternate from thereon in. don't know yet

the strips are the beginning stages of some beads i am attempting to make. the strips are torn silk and i painted them with fabric paint. i got the idea from watching a show on the diy network. once dried (i did them yesterday so they were still wet) i may embellish them more with paint or rubber stamps or metallic ink. then i will roll them around a dowel or some such thing (first rubbing a thin coat of fabric glue on them). after they are dried i may embellish further or not. i may coat them with a sealant or not. i'll have to wing it.

another cool kid!

if molly shoul were my daughter, i couldn't tell you how proud i'd be! on the other hand, i guess i understand the position of the principal. the school administration COULD let ms shoul perform the song with a disclaimer - something to the effect of, we are allowing ms shoul to practice her RIGHT to free speech even though we here at school may NOT condone it........i KNOW some parents would complain if the song were performed. BUT if this song is not allowed, NO OTHER 'political type' songs should be allowed either. by that i mean RIGHT leaning ones of course

Principal bars Coral Springs student from singing anti-Bush song at talent show
By Jamie Malernee South Florida Sun-Sentinel Posted May 5 2006
A 10-year-old Coral Springs girl won't be allowed to sing a controversial President Bush-bashing ballad at her school talent show after her principal deemed it inappropriate and too political. The song, Dear Mr. President, performed and co-written by the singer Pink, criticizes the president for the war in Iraq and other policies, including his stance on gay rights.Parent Nancy Shoul says her daughter Molly should be lauded for choosing lyrics that are full of substance rather than pop music fluff. She said the principal's ban sends a bad message and violates her daughter's right to free speech."If this was a student singing a pro-administration song, no one would quibble with it," Shoul said. "The principal is just running scared and doesn't want to upset any parents."The principal of Park Springs Elementary, Camille Pontillo, could not be reached for comment Thursday. In an e-mail provided by the mother, Pontillo explained that the song Molly "chose to sing is a political song and does use the word hell in it." A Broward County School District official said the principal has every right to determine what music her students should hear at a school function."This is a fifth-grade student that wants to perform a song filled with lyrics about drug use, war, abortion, gay rights and profanity," said district spokeswoman Nadine Drew. "This is an elementary school that includes kindergarteners and pre-K students."............

i have never heard this song. i'm going to give it a listen in the near futher though!
the lyrics to the 'controversial' song:
"Dear Mr. President"(pink - feat. Indigo Girls)
Dear Mr. President
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions
if we can speak honestly
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep
What do you feel when you look in the mirror
Are you proud
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me whyDear Mr. President
Were you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
How can you say
No child is left behind
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell
What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
Let me tell you bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you bout hard work
Hard workHard work
You don't know nothing bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh How do you sleep at night
How do you walk with your head held high
Dear Mr. President
You'd never take a walk with me
Would you

Hayden, Likely Choice for CIA Chief, Displayed Shaky Grip on 4th Amendment at Press Club

By E&P Staff

Published: May 06, 2006 1:30 PM ET

NEW YORK Gen. Michael Hayden, expected to be named new director of the CIA, replacing Porter Goss as early as Monday, displayed a shaky awareness of the Fourth Amendment in an appearance at the National Press Club in Washingnon, D.C., on January 23, E&P reported at the time.

Hayden, the former national director of the National Security Agency, was much in the news at the time as a defender of the NSA's domestic spying program.

Hayden, now principal deputy director of National Intelligence with the Office of National Intelligence, was NSA director when the NSA monitoring program began in 2001.

As the last journalist to get in a question at the Press Club, Jonathan Landay, a well-regarded investigative reporter for Knight Ridder, noted that Gen. Hayden repeatedly referred to the Fourth Amendment's search standard of "reasonableness" without mentioning that it also demands "probable cause." Hayden seemed to deny that the amendment included any such thing, or simply ignored it. He directly said "no" it did not include "probable cause."

This caused Landay to reply, "The legal standard is probable cause, General."

my pops is 79 and still kicks ass. well up until a little while ago he did. in a week or so, he's going in for hip replacement surgery. after that it's off to rehab for a bit (we don't know how long yet). he'll be incapacitated for a while though. he can barely stand up. it hurts me to see him like this. he has always been a very active person. he walks daily (he knows EVERYONE in the hood and then some). this operation is a good thing. i am looking forward to him NOT being in constant pain. he never complains though. i remember when i was young, he went to work (he was a teamster at that time) with two broken ribs. SOOOOOOOOOOO someone has to mow his lawn! well, i already TOLD my brother in law, big bubba, HE was going to come over every weekend and mow that lawn. oh i forgot to say my pops is obsessive about his yard. he doesn't have the greenest grass or prettiest flowers BUT he is always the first one out to mow or snow blow or sand and salt or whatever. i'm not exaggerating; he IS the first one out there. friday, i stopped by his house and left him a note NOT to mow the lawn the next morning. i'd be over between 9 and 10 on saturday morning and i'd mow the lawn (well the front. we'd let the back go for another week). i arrived at 8:45 and of course as expected he was already outside doing something or other. i was barely out of the car and the FIRST thing he said to me was, 'you could have worn better shoes'. i had a pair of flip flops on. 'one can't mow the lawn in flip flops?' i thought to myself but let it go. i dragged him back in and made him a tea and myself a coffee. i needed a moment or two to collect my thoughts before the big morning of yard work. oh, there were lawn chairs he kept on his screened in porch for the winter he wanted to bring outside. i told him I WOULD DO IT. of course they were already outside when i arrived saturday. and one wonders where i got my stubbornness (and if you can imagine my mother was the stubborn one!). now i'm ready to start, we go outside and i take one of those chairs from the back yard and bring it to the front so he can supervise me mowing his lawn. he started the mower for me and showed me something about pulling this bar back that made it keep running. he showed me how to prime it and he showed me this lever to push down that made the wheels turn automatically (after i engaged those wow, what a difference. of course i didn't do it right away though, dope that i am). so i mow the front lawn going in concentric squares. i didn't do the spots around his bushes good enough of course, so he had to get up and do them himself. i had to keep glancing over at him (while he WAS in the chair) and every time i did, i just burst out laughing. you sort of had to be there, to see ME mowing a lawn with an actual lawn mower. i got specific explicit instructions on how far to mow on either side. to the edge of the neighbor's house on the left and to the line of the big tree in back for the house on the right. the mower stalled a few times and some type of height adjustment had to be made and then it was smooth sailing. i stopped the mower and looked over to the chair. he was NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. he was back in the garage bringing out his leaf blower. he blew every speck of grass off of the sidewalks and driveway. then he blew it off of tapparentlyer. apparantly that job was too complicated for me to handle or understand. hell as it turns out it got WICKED WINDY later in the day and the damn grass shards or whatever the hell they are called WOULD have blown away any damn way. just as i was about to go back in the house, he looked at my feet and said, 'see!!!'. i looked down and not only were my pink fuzzy flip flops all green (don't be sad, they were last years and on their last legs. i'll make new fuzzy ones this year) but MY FEET AND TOENAILS WERE ALL STAINED GREEN. damn the geezer was right about the shoes! we have one more weekend before he goes in for surgery. i'm calling big bubba up and telling him it's HIS turn next! i'm done, i've had it, finis!!!

GIMME A PIGFOOT (and a bottle of beer)
(1933) Wesley "Sox" Wilson
Up in Harlem on a Saturday night
Where the highbrows get together, it's just to tight
We all gather at the Harlem Strut
And what we do is tut tut tut
Ol' Hannah Brown, from way cross town
Keeps drinking her liquor and she brings them down
Just at the break of day
You could hear old Hannah say
I wanna pigfoot and a bottle of beer
Send me daddy, cos I don't care
I feel just like I wanna clown
Give the piano player a drink
Cause he brought me down
He just send me right off to sleep
Check all your razors and your guns
I'm gonna be arrested when the wagon comes
I wanna pigfoot and a bottle of beer
Send me cos I don't care oh no
Send me cos I don't care
I wanna pigfoot and a bottle of beer
Send me daddy, cos I don't care
I feel just like I wanna clown
Give the piano player a drink
Cause he brought me down
He's got rhythm when he stomps his feet
He moves me right off to sleep
Check all your razors check your guns
I'm gonna be arrested when the wagon comes
I wanna pigfoot and a bottle of beer
Send me cos I don't care oh no
Send me cos I don't care

Spies Among Us
Despite a troubled history, police across the nation are keeping tabs on ordinary Americans
By David E. Kaplan
5/8/06
In the Atlanta suburbs of DeKalb County, local officials wasted no time after the 9/11 attacks. The second-most-populous county in Georgia, the area is home to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the FBI's regional headquarters, and other potential terrorist targets. Within weeks of the attacks, officials there boasted that they had set up the nation's first local department of homeland security. Dozens of other communities followed, and, like them, DeKalb County put in for--and got--a series of generous federal counterterrorism grants. The county received nearly $12 million from Washington, using it to set up, among other things, a police intelligence unit.
The outfit stumbled in 2002, when two of its agents were assigned to follow around the county executive. Their job: to determine whether he was being tailed--not by al Qaeda but by a district attorney investigator looking into alleged misspending. A year later, one of its plainclothes agents was seen photographing a handful of vegan activists handing out antimeat leaflets in front of a HoneyBaked Ham store. Police arrested two of the vegans and demanded that they turn over notes, on which they'd written the license-plate number of an undercover car, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, which is now suing the county. An Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial neatly summed up the incident: "So now we know: Glazed hams are safe in DeKalb County."......

literally WEEP Bush's best moment in office? this says it ALL

Reeling in big perch
Sun May 7, 2006 11:01 AM BST
BERLIN (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush told a German newspaper his best moment in more than five years in office was catching a big perch in his own lake.
"You know, I've experienced many great moments and it's hard to name the best," Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001.
"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound (3.402 kilos) perch in my lake," he told the newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.....

FBI Puts SOA Watch under “Counterterrorism” Surveillances
By Matthew RothschildMay 4, 2006
The FBI has been keeping tabs on SOA Watch, the human rights group that monitors the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia.
In fact, the FBI has elevated its concern to “priority” level, claiming that the group is subject to “counterterrorism” monitoring, according to documents released on May 4 by the ACLU and its Georgia chapter.
SOA Watch was founded by Father Roy Bourgeois back in 1990, and it organizes annual protests at Fort Benning that now draw about 10,000 protesters. (The School of the Americas, in a PR stunt, has changed its name to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.)....

.............The FBI itself recognizes the nonviolent nature of the group, according to one memo from October 2003. “The leaders of the SOA Watch have taken strides to impart upon the protest participants that the protest should be a peaceful event,” the FBI document states.
The FBI denies doing anything wrong in its investigation of SOA Watch.
“Our reaction is the same to all the other ACLU allegations about FBI spying,” says Bill Carter, a spokesperson for the agency. “The FBI does not investigate individuals based on First Amendment activities. The FBI investigates only when we have information that an individual or a group may be involved either in violent activity or national security issues.”...........

what ME worry?

in honor of someone who has been working with endangered species

Endangered Species List Expands to 16,000

In the update of its Red List of Threatened Species released today, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) says that more than 40 percent of species that have been assessed worldwide are threatened with extinction.
These include a quarter of the world's coniferous trees, an eighth of its birds, and one-third of its amphibians.
Also listed are a quarter of all the mammal species that were assessed for the survey.
For the first time, polar bears and hippopotamuses are now designated as threatened.
Polar bears, the IUCN said, are likely to become one of the most notable casualties of global warming, which is melting sea ice on which they roam in search of Arctic seals.
Without enough ice, the bears risk being trapped on land, where they face starvation. Or they may drown in attempts to swim long distances. .....
