i'm going to be the FIRST one in line to see this!

black dynamite found via boing boing

NSFW, contains nudity and sexual references) Goddamn, Black Dynamite looks good. It's hard to imagine this movie not being awesome, if it's anywhere close to what the trailer promises in glorious "anamorphic duovision." Every second of the preview looks great. Movie just sold for $2MM at Sundance, to the jive motherfuckers at Sony. Worth its weight in CIA ghetto smack. This analysis of the essential elements of blaxploitation by the filmmakers is ROFL-arious:
# Stick it to The Man: Black paranoia is usually right in there. There's usually this conspiratorial thing that The Man is plotting your doom. There's a lot of real blaxploitation movies that involve a plot to exterminate black people. It's a constant storyline. In these movies, white people spend 95% of their time coming up with plots against black people..................

drunken negro cookies indeed.

after seeing this (and i believe the two women and the one man who say kefalinos spews racial slurs) anyone who shops in this bakery is OFF OFF OFF of my christmas card list

UPDATE: "Drunken Negro Face" Cookies On Sale at Greenwich Village Bakery
[UPDATE BELOW] At at a time when any decent baker should have been selling racially harmonious black and white cookies by the truckload, one Greenwich Village bakery popular with celebrities and shows like Sex and the City has outraged neighbors by selling a "Drunken Negro Face" cookie in, um, "honor" of President Obama. [Video below.] A shocked customer tells My Fox NY that Ted Kefalinos, proprietor of Lafayette French Pastry, asked her, "Would you like some drunken negro heads to go with your coffee? They're in honor of our new president. He's following in the same path of Abraham Lincoln; he will get his."

Later, her friend stopped by the bakery and said Kefalinos corrected her about the name of the cookies—they're actually drunken "N-word" cookies. She says the backwards baker then repeated the dark suggestion that, like Lincoln, President Obama "will get what's coming to him." Go Secret Service, go!

And it gets worse when Fox's Arnold Diaz goes into the store with a camera and microphone to confront Kefalinos, who suddenly makes Joe the Plumber look like a Rhodes scholar. "I called them Drunken Negro Heads. What's the problem with that?" Kefalinos asks the newscaster with a smirk. "On Inauguration Day I thought it would be cool to change the name to Obama Heads. I just changed it for the day." We suppose Burning Cross Bananas Foster was too complicated to mass-produce...........

more faux and more flush

sure, i believe there is recividism

sure, i believe some (perhaps a lot) of the people we're holding in places like gitmo ARE terrorists and should NEVER in a million years be set free. i ALSO believe in the united states constitution and the other laws we abide by like the geneva convention. i believe we are a free and wonderful nation. i believe we should NEVER torture. i believe all who are incarcerated should be charged, have counsel and be brought to a trial. i believe that rarely happened during the king george years.

i believe our msm should NEVER take the word of anyone without first investigating it. sure, it's ok for a news source to say, 'the pentagon reported 63 acts of recidivism', but then they MUST follow it up by 'however, we have not confirmed that figure' OR 'the pentagon also claimed 2 acts of recidivism two weeks ago'. i want the WHOLE picture not just a pinpoint.

Pentagon's terror 'recidivism' claims blasted as 'propaganda'
David Edwards and Stephen C. Webster
Ever wonder how many of President Bush's terror war detainees were released, only to "return to the fight"?

"Their numbers have changed from 20, to 12, to seven, to more than five, to two, to a couple, to a few, 25, 29, 12, and then 24," quoted Keith Olbermann on Thursday's edition of Countdown.

The latest figure, 61, which was carried unchallenged by CNN, the MSNBC host noted, appears to be nothing but "propaganda."

A study published by Seton Hall Law Professor Mark Denbeaux on Jan. 15 finds the Pentagon wrongly altered its figures on terrorist 'recidivism' 43 times, with the latest figure being "the most egregiously so."

Obama Overturns 'Mexico City Policy' Implemented by Reagan

U.S. Can Now Give Federal Funding To International Family Planning Groups That Provide Abortion Services

By JAKE TAPPER, SUNLEN MILLER and HUMA KHAN
President Obama signed an executive order today reversing the ban that prohibits funding to international family planning groups that provide abortions, as first reported by ABC News.

Under the hotly debated "Mexico City Policy," the U.S. government could not provide funding for family planning services to clinics or groups that offered abortion-related services overseas, even if funding for those activities came from non-government sources. It essentially barred recipients of U.S. foreign aid from promoting abortion as a method of family planning.

If organizations received government funding, they would "agree as a condition of their receipt of federal funds that such organizations would neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations."......

Obama Lifts Global Abortion 'Gag Rule'
Mexico City Policy Forbids Funding for International Groups That Perform or Provide Information About Abortion
By Rob Stein and Michael Shear
Washington Post Staff Writers
President Barack Obama today signed an executive order lifting a ban on U.S. funding for international family planning groups that perform abortions or provide counseling about the procedure.

The order rescinds the Mexico City Policy, also known as the "gag rule," which President Ronald Reagan originally instituted in 1984 and President Bill Clinton rescinded and President George W. Bush revived in 2001.

The decision had been eagerly expected by family planning groups, women's health advocates and others, who hoped it would restore millions of dollars of funding to programs providing health care, contraceptive services, HIV prevention and other care around the world. ..........

here's the press release

Routes is an eight week cross-platform game that debuts online from Channel 4 Education. Routes, produced in partnership with the Wellcome Trust, takes players on an immersive journey into the world of genetics, evolution and the human genome, in a bid to find out what makes us human.

Embedded in the game, award-winning comedian Katherine Ryan explores her own genetic make-up, and tests her DNA to find out whether it is her genes or her environment that define who she is. Can genes make you fat? Do they hide critical information about disease? Can Katherine blame her genetic make-up for the fact that she gets drunk on two beers?

As players delve deeper they are forced to explore these questions by solving puzzles, playing mini games, trading tips and collaborating on challenges, and as the broader game unravels the players will uncover a compelling mystery that lies at the heart of Routes itself. Who owns your genes? What are the pros and cons of exploring your genetic make-up? Do your genes determine who you are, or does our environment play a greater role?

The Routes website goes live in January 2009 at www.routesgame.com

Whistleblower: NSA spied on everyone, targeted journalists
David Edwards and Muriel Kane

Updates: Sen. Rockefeller believes NSA may have spied on him; Ex-NSA analyst believes program a remnant of 'Total Information Awareness'

Former National Security Agency analyst Russell Tice, who helped expose the NSA's warrantless wiretapping in December 2005, has now come forward with even more startling allegations. Tice told MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on Wednesday that the programs that spied on Americans were not only much broader than previously acknowledged but specifically targeted journalists.

"The National Security Agency had access to all Americans' communications -- faxes, phone calls, and their computer communications," Tice claimed. "It didn't matter whether you were in Kansas, in the middle of the country, and you never made foreign communications at all. They monitored all communications."

Tice further explained that "even for the NSA it's impossible to literally collect all communications. ... What was done was sort of an ability to look at the metadata ... and ferret that information to determine what communications would ultimately be collected.".......

Army accuses KBR contractors of 'negligent homicide' for electrocution

Stephen C. Webster
United States Army investigation has accused former Halliburton subsidiary KBR, along with contractors the company used and two of the firm's supervisors, of 'negligent homicide' in the electrocution of a soldier, according to a published report.

"[A]n Army criminal investigator says the manner of death for Staff Sgt. Ryan Maseth, 24, has been changed from accidental to negligent homicide because the contractor failed to ensure that 'qualified electricians and plumbers' worked on the barracks where Maseth died," reports the Associated Press.

"Maseth, 24, of Shaler, Pa., outside Pittsburgh, was electrocuted on Jan. 2 when an improperly grounded electric water pump short-circuited and flowed through the pipes," reported ABC in March 2008. "Since the coiled hose was touching his arm, he was hit with an electrical jolt and went into cardiac arrest and died.".................

Intelligence Pick Calls Torture Immoral, Ineffective
Washington Post Staff Writer
Retired Adm. Dennis C. Blair, President Obama's nominee to lead the U.S. intelligence community, told Congress yesterday that torture "is not moral, legal or effective" and that "there will not be any waterboarding on my watch."

Blair, nominated to be director of national intelligence, used his confirmation hearing to outline a new approach to counterterrorism and told the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence that he would not support "any surveillance activities that circumvent" the law.

"I believe we are in a new era in the relationship between the two branches of government," Blair told committee members, who over the past eight years were frequently denied information by the White House. Blair, the former head of U.S. Pacific Command who spent two years in the 1990s as an associate CIA director for military support, appeared headed for unanimous approval...........

and then we also have this! we MUST follow international humane laws. we are human beings NOT soul-less heartless evil-doers. we don't want OUR people to be tortured. we call those that do such things savages. we became those savages for eight years. we will now start to become human beings once again and i for one am comfortable with that

Army manual that bars 'waterboarding' now single standard
A US Army field manual that bars the use of "waterboarding" and other harsh interrogation techniques was set forth Thursday as the single standard for interrogations of prisoners.

President Barack Obama ordered the change, which brings to a close the CIA's secret prisons and special interrogration authorities for "war on terror" detainees.

The manual, known as FM 2-22.3, was revised and reissued by the army in September 2006 amid a storm of controversy over abuses of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and other detention centers.

It cites the Geneva Convention's prohibition of "cruel, inhman and degrading treatment" of prisoners...........

Obama Starts Reversing Bush Policies
Guantanamo Order Readied; Lobbying Rules Tightened

Washington Post Staff Writer
President Obama moved swiftly yesterday to begin rolling back eight years of his predecessor's policies, ordering tough new ethics rules and preparing to issue an order closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which has been at the center of the debate over the treatment of U.S. prisoners in the battle against terrorism.

Acting to address several promises he made during his campaign, Obama met with top generals about speeding the withdrawal from Iraq and gathered his senior economic advisers as he continued to push for a massive spending bill to create jobs.

He also signed a series of executive orders and directives intended to slow the revolving door between government service and lobbying, and ordered his administration to share information more freely with the public............

it's blog for choice day

it's also the anniversary of roe v wade.

the topic this year is:
What is your top pro-choice hope for President Obama and/or the new Congress?

i'll tell you what mine is, if you tell me what yours is!

first off, i'm going to start by saying (as i always start off by saying.....) i am NOT pro-abortion. what i AM is; PRO-CHOICE. my body and my sisters' bodies are our own. it's OUR decision.

as we used to say back in the day, KEEP YOUR LAWS OFF OF MY BODY

here we go

my hope for president obama and the congress (and everyone else) is: (and this is THE most important thing regarding choice. when one is WELL informed and WELL education about ALL OF THE CHOICES, one can make THE BEST decision possible)

STOP WASTING MONEY ON ABSTINENCE ONLY EDUCATION. not only does it NOT work (how many times do studies have to prove that i ask you?) it also stops our children and our teens from learning about birth control and safer sex practices. both are absolutely essential for a healthy society and culture. since abstinence does NOT work, would you rather have your sons and daughters practicing birth control and safer sex than getting pregnant and/or contracting stds? i know what my choice is: teach our children well. teach our children thoroughly. teach our children ALL of the options NOT just the ONE THAT DOESN'T WORK.

comprehensive sex education for all (and yes, this includes all the nations we help with this. hiv/aids funding. when we dish out that dough we make ABSTINENCE ONLY preaching a condition. that is RIDICULOUS)

............The other day I wrote about how the GeoEye-1 satellite would be taking images of President Obama’s inauguration from 423 miles up — in space. This could have only worked on a clear day, so that clouds weren’t blocking the view. Good news: It was a clear day, and the pictures (above and below) look great.

The pictures show the view from the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the surrounding areas. See those things that look like ants? Yeah, those are people — millions of them............

what an exhausting day yesterday was

like a dope i didn't take yesterday off. i knew i could watch from my pc at work. i was flitting from site to site and the streaming vids just weren't doing it for me. way too choppy and they kept freezing. i decided to go to the cafeteria at about 11:00 to see if they had it on the flat screens distributed about. not only did they, they had it on GIANT movie screens (i didn't know they had the screens in there. i should have known because i've seen the projectors on the ceiling). there was only ONE problem - but it was a BIG one.

THEY HAD THE CHANNEL SET TO FAUX 'NEWS'. i couldn't believe my eyes and ears but yup - they did (i later found out another area of the building had msnbc on. DAY-UM i would have gone there).

i sat in that chair from 11 until president obama gave his speech. i cried the WHOLE time as well. it wasn't bad at 11. i was the only one in there. it was REALLY BAD at 12 when the cafeteria was full. a few very nice people who sat with me (strangers) provided me with napkins so i could wipe my face.

i just felt alive again. energized.

NOT

a lawsuit is one thing

but this nurse should be behind bars. this is NOT the first iud she has (allegedly - 'accidentally') YANKED OUT

Whoops! Anti-Choice Nurse “Accidentally” Pulls Out Women’s IUDs

As both the Courthouse News Service and RH Reality Check report, an openly anti-choice nurse is currently in the process of being sued, along with the practice she works for. The plaintiff is a patient who had her IUD “accidentally” removed by the nurse, who then refused to put it back in.

The plaintiff says she went to Rio Rancho to have the strings on her IUD shortened.

The complaint states: “As soon as Defendant Olona began speaking to (the plaintiff), she questioned her about her choice of contraception.

“As Defendant Olona began the procedure, (the plaintiff) felt Olona pull on the strings of the IUD. (The plaintiff) felt a distinct pulling on the strings followed by a sharp pain in her uterus similar to a very strong menstrual cramp.

“As that happened, Defendant Olona stated, ‘Uh oh, I accidentally pulled out your IUD. I gently tugged and out it came.’ She then explained, ‘I cut the string than went back and gently pulled and out it came. It must have not been in properly.’

“Olona then stated, ‘having the IUD come out was a good thing.’ She asked (the plaintiff) if she wanted to hear her ‘take’ on the situation. Without receiving a response, Defendant Olona stated, ‘I personally do not like IUDs. I feel they are a type of abortion. I don’t know how you feel about abortion, but I am against them. What the IUD does is take the fertilized egg and pushes it out of the uterus.’...................

fuck hbo

this is why you can no longer see the 'this land is your land' video (youtube) i posted a few ago (and of course a ton of others posted as well)

really, FUCK YOU HBO
(and the same goes to the inauguration committee who made this asinine decision in the first place. THIS IS AMERICA WE ALL DESERVE TO SEE THIS FOR FREE)

HBO owns Obama's inaugural concert. If you took any photos or videos you'd better destroy them now.
Joe Sudbay (DC) ·
This land is their land.

HBO has been busy. Not only did they pick a fight with the Obama Inaugural Committee over openly-gay Bishop Gene Robinson (HBO censored Robinson's invocation, so no one will be seeing it), they've been scouring the Internet to make sure no one sees evidence of yesterday's Obama inaugural event.

Yesterday, I posted a clip of Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen singing "This Land is Your Land" at the "We Are One" Obama inaugural concert. Perhaps you've heard of the concert - it's that amazing event down on the Mall set to kick off the inauguration of our next president. But that song is HBO's song. They took down my video claiming copyright infringement. That's the spirit, HBO. You own the inaugural concert at the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall which is is officially part of the swearing in of our next president. Nice.

I get that HBO has rights, but when they're broadcasting news -- and the concert was news -- they need to relax. It's not like I copied one of their stupid shows (and after "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City," most are pretty stupid.) And, the Presidential Inaugural Committee should have thought through the concept of letting a corporation own Obama's inaugural concert. Again, it was at the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall and was an official event of the inauguration of our president. We all own that, not HBO.

YouTube sent this email:

This is Your Land: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-PCpRWqXv8)
Class act, HBO. God forbid people get to see Pete Seeger sing "This Land is Your Land." And, doesn't this violate the spirit of the idea that corporate America doesn't own D.C. anymore??...................

The Audacity of the Presidential Inauguration Committee: or This Land is Whose Land?

Susan Brison

I was looking forward to watching the Inaugural Concert with my son this afternoon. Really looking forward to it. I'd heard that it was being broadcast on HBO, but I'd also heard that it HBO would let non-subscribers watch it for free.

It wasn't obvious to me, though, how, as a non-HBO subscriber, I would be able to watch it, so I paid very close attention to the channels I do get -- CNN and MSNBC, among others -- in the hour leading up to the concert. The talking heads kept alluding to the upcoming concert, in ways that led me to expect they would be broadcasting it.

The first sign that something was amiss came when, during the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner, the talking heads just kept on talking, saying things like 'people are holding their hands over their hearts . . . they seem to be very moved . . . .' And then, at the conclusion of the National Anthem, the reporters abruptly cut away from the concert entirely, explaining that the Presidential Inauguration Committee had sold exclusive rights to broadcast this extraordinarily, historically, inclusive "We Are One" concert at Lincoln Memorial to HBO. So those of us who hadn't had the foresight -- or the financial wherewithal -- to subscribe to HBO (or to one of the cable or satellite dish companies that had worked out an agreement with HBO) would not be able to see or hear it...........

they must be

psychic. how else would they know what barack obama's agenda is? he's not even president yet (although he WILL BE in a few short hours). i guess i'll have to take my king george how many days in office backwards countdown clock off of my sidebar, huh?

(oh, i stopped by the grassfire site and it's absolutely frightening. it is something i would imagine hitler would have come up with had the internet been around back then. and no, i'm not exaggerating. that's exactly what this strikes me as)

350,000 conservatives pledge to block Obama's 'socialistic' agenda
Muriel Kane
A conservative group, Grassfire.org, announced on Monday that its online petition pledging "patriotic" opposition to President-elect Barack Obama has gathered 350,000 signatures. (By presstime, the groups website was claiming a total of 371,453.)

Grassfire's founder, Steve Elliot, stated, "This is not a personal attack on Barack Obama. On the contrary, this is a call to action for conservatives who profess love for our country and respect for our institutions. Our disagreements with the President are based in ideology and public policy only. From this firm foundation we are mounting a patriotic, resilient, conservative resistance to Obama's agenda."

However, the group's attempt to present itself as moderate and principled is undercut by its own website, which is much shriller in tone and appears designed to create a sense of alarm among conservatives...........

MLK: Why I Cannot Be Silent

I come to this magnificent house of worship tonight because my conscience leaves me no other choice. I join with you in this meeting because I am in deepest agreement with the aims and work of the organization which has brought us together: Clergy and Laymen Concerned about Vietnam. The recent statement of your executive committee are the sentiments of my own heart and I found myself in full accord when I read its opening lines: "A time comes when silence is betrayal." That time has come for us in relation to Vietnam.

The truth of these words is beyond doubt but the mission to which they call us is a most difficult one. Even when pressed by the demands of inner truth, men do not easily assume the task of opposing their government's policy, especially in time of war. Nor does the human spirit move without great difficulty against all the apathy of conformist thought within one's own bosom and in the surrounding world. Moreover when the issues at hand seem as perplexed as they often do in the case of this dreadful conflict we are always on the verge of being mesmerized by uncertainty; but we must move on.

Some of us who have already begun to break the silence of the night have found that the calling to speak is often a vocation of agony, but we must speak. We must speak with all the humility that is appropriate to our limited vision, but we must speak. And we must rejoice as well, for surely this is the first time in our nation's history that a significant number of its religious leaders have chosen to move beyond the prophesying of smooth patriotism to the high grounds of a firm dissent based upon the mandates of conscience and the reading of history. Perhaps a new spirit is rising among us. If it is, let us trace its movement well and pray that our own inner being may be sensitive to its guidance, for we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness that seems so close around us...........................

Don't Miss These Brilliant Essays on Gaza
By Jan Frel, AlterNet.

The events in Gaza have resulted in the producution of more media than any one person could digest in a lifetime. And since few of us have more than a small part of the day to learn about what's going on, it's almost certain that you might have missed some of the absolutely superb essays written in recent weeks that give the big picture.

Here's a quick guide to some of the best essays I've read on Gaza and the larger questions posed by the recent violence.

Israeli Uri Avnery in CounterPunch argues that after witnessing the events in Gaza, even through the distorted lens of televised mass media, "seared into the consciousness of the world will be the image of Israel as a bloodstained monster, ready at any moment to commit war crimes and not prepared to abide by any moral restraints. This will have severe consequences for [Israel's] long-term future, our standing in the world, our chance of achieving peace and quiet."

Chris Hedges has a sublime touch when it comes to writing about the insanity we are capable of when warmaking consumes a society. We all saw, and most of us, if you believe the polls, personally experienced this madness most recently during the onset of the U.S. invasion in Iraq.........

Wealthy men give women more orgasms
Jonathan Leake, Science and Environment Editor

Scientists have found that the pleasure women get from making love is directly linked to the size of their partner’s bank balance.

They found that the wealthier a man is, the more frequently his partner has orgasms.

“Women’s orgasm frequency increases with the income of their partner,” said Dr Thomas Pollet, the Newcastle University psychologist behind the research.

He believes the phenomenon is an “evolutionary adaptation” that is hard-wired into women, driving them to select men on the basis of their perceived quality.
The study is certain to prove controversial, suggesting that women are inherently programmed to be gold-diggers.

However, it fits into a wider body of research known as evolutionary psychology which suggests that both men and women are genetically predisposed to ruthlessly exploit each other to achieve the best chances of survival for their genes.

The female orgasm is the focus of much research because it appears to have no reproductive purpose. Women can become pregnant whatever their pleasure levels. ................

GAZA CITY The Palestinian doctor provided Israeli TV viewers with regular updates on Gaza fighting's human toll. But Friday's report was different — with sobs he told how his three daughters and a niece were killed by an Israeli shell.

"I want to know why my daughters were harmed," Ezzeldeen Abu al-Aish said on Channel 10. "This should haunt (Israeli Ehud Prime Minister) Olmert his entire life."

Throughout the 21-day war, Abu al-Aish has brought accounts of war's tragedy to Israeli living rooms, making him for many the voice of Palestinian suffering.

During the broadcasts, Abu al-Aish also often spoke of his fears for his eight children as Israeli shells punished not only the Hamas militants they were targeting but civilians who live in the crowded enclave. His wife reportedly died recently of cancer.
