they don't want their library expanded BECAUSE POOR KIDS MAY USE IT

(yes, really)

Library Expansion in Posh NY Hood Goes On

By Rocco Staino -- School Library Journal,

A year after SLJ reported on the contentious dispute over a proposal to add a children’s room to the East Hampton Library in New York, the kids of the posh summer community are no closer to seeing it become a reality. Library Director Dennis Fabiszak has said that the East Hampton Village Board of Zoning Appeals has expressed concern that an expanded children’s collection would lead to more library usage by those who live in the less affluent areas of Springs and Wainscott.

As recently as July 2, the village zoning board is still requiring that the library submit to an environmental review, adds Fabiszak. The local zoning board has taken this position despite a statement from the consul for the New York State Department of Environmental Conversation (NYSDEC) stating that the library is an “educational institution” and according to regulations is exempt from such a review. The NYSDEC letter to the zoning board reaffirmed a prior determination from the state’s Department of Education.......

Media Matters Running Ads Attacking Lou Dobbs’ Birther Obsession — On CNN!

Okay, this is an intriguing new frontier in political media criticism. Media Matters, which has been attacking CNN for not reining in Lou Dobbs’ birther obsession, has now purchased air time to run a TV ad attacking “CNN’s Lou Dobbs problem” — during Dobbs’ show!

A Media Matters spokesman tells me the group has bought a week of ad time on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News in D.C., New York, and Atlanta, beginning Tuesday. The catch: Media Matters has specifically purchased time to air the ad during Dobbs’ show — putting CNN in the position of either running the spot or nixing it and making this a bigger story..........

Cowardice Among 'Christian' Leaders: Why the Churches Are Largely Mum on Torture
By Ray McGovern, Consortium News

Anyone harboring doubts that the institutional Church is riding shotgun for the system, even regarding heinous sin like torture, should be chastened by the results of a recent survey by the Pew Research Center.

Who but the cowardly crew leading the "Christian" churches can be held responsible for the fact that many of their flock believe torture of suspected terrorists is "justified?"

Those polled were white non-Hispanic Catholics, white Evangelicals, and white mainline Protestants. A majority (54 percent) of those who attend church regularly said torture could be "justified," while a majority of those not attending church regularly responded that torture was rarely or never justified.

I am not a psychologist or sociologist. But I recall that one of the first things Hitler did on assuming power was to ensure there was a pastor in every Lutheran and Catholic parish in Germany. Why? Because he calculated, correctly, that here would be a force for stability for his regime...........

Exxon Spends More on Lobbying than Entire Clean Energy Industry Combined

by Brian Merchant, Brooklyn, New York

Guess it pays to be the biggest oil company in the world--even though their profits are at the lowest they've been in six years, Exxon still managed to spend more money on lobbying efforts for the climate bill than the entire clean energy industry combined.

Even with their gargantuan effort, the oil company still felt slighted in the version of the climate bill that passed the House last month (coal and agriculture got far more free permits to pollute than the oil company). Perhaps they at least got a consolation prize? Maybe an "I Spent $15 Million on Lobbying and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt" tee, or something?.............

i've sort of kept out of the health care debate for the most part

i think big bid-nez runs that just like they run everything else. they're calling the shots and will continue to do so. period

what gets me is the bullshite that's coming out of some of the 'conservatives' talk shows or writing or radio or whatever. they're spewing not only falsehoods but outright evil. they're attempting to scare the shite not only out of the median population but ESPECIALLY OUT OF THE ELDERLY

they're telling the elderly the president and his buds are out to PULL THE PLUG on 'em just as soon as these proposed changes take effect

Talk Radio Campaign Frightening Seniors
Provision for End-of-Life Counseling Is Described by Right as 'Death Care'

Washington Post Staff Writer
A campaign on conservative talk radio, fueled by President Obama's calls to control exorbitant medical bills, has sparked fear among senior citizens that the health-care bill moving through Congress will lead to end-of-life "rationing" and even "euthanasia." The controversy stems from a proposal to pay physicians who counsel elderly or terminally ill patients about what medical interventions they would prefer near the end of life and how to prepare instructions such as living wills. Under the plan, Medicare would reimburse doctors for one session every five years to confer with a patient about his or her wishes and how to ensure those preferences are followed. The counseling sessions would be voluntary................

shite, now come on

i don't work for the government (but we're still subject to the patriot act. don't get me started on what we have to do because of that). i work for an international financial institution/insurance company.

not only do we have a clear desk policy (we have to have our computers locked, our drawers locked, all papers with work related data on them locked up/off of our desks if we are going to be away from the desk for an hour or over. that includes locking everything up tightly each night. we have tight security to get into the building as well. cameras and security personnel all over. 24/7 (i know because i go in at 3 or 4 am). yet we can't leave a work related paper on our desks over night. oh, we're checked on it from time to time. people do walk around and check. we get notified if we've violated that policy. it's (adhering to it) also a part of our annual/midyear review process. they ARE serious about protecting the data of our customers....

AND all sorts of sites are blocked from our laptops (most of us have laptops with docking stations). no social networking sites like facebook. no youtube. no flickr. no blogger. AND CERTAINLY NOT ANY SITE WITH PEER TO PEER SHARING CAPABILITIES.

i can't imagine an organization responsible for the safety of the citizens of the united states of america being less careful than my company - BUT IT'S TRUE
File Sharing Leaks Sensitive Federal Data, Lawmakers Are Told
Washington Post Staff Writers

The indiscriminate use of a popular online data-sharing technology has led to the disclosure of sensitive government and personal information -- including FBI surveillance photos of a Mafia hit man, lists of people with HIV, and motorcade routes and safe-house locations for then-first lady Laura Bush, a congressional panel was told on Wednesday.

The information is often exposed inadvertently by people who download the technology to share music or other files, not realizing that the "peer-to-peer" software also makes the contents of their computers available to other users, experts said.

The issue is so pressing that the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), said he would introduce a bill to ban such software from all government and contractor computers and networks..........

Tennessee state senator Stanley resigns, admits affair
By Chas Sisk
State Sen. Paul Stanley resigned from the legislature Tuesday, telling a Memphis radio station that he stood by his socially conservative record despite the sex-and-extortion scandal that forced him from office. Stanley, a Republican from the Memphis suburb of Germantown, will leave office effective Aug. 10, a date he said was picked to give him enough time to wind down constituent business. Stanley was chairman of the Senate's Commerce, Labor and Agriculture Committee.

The announcement comes more than a week after a court hearing in Nashville named Stanley as the victim in an reported extortion plot that centered on nude photos of McKensie Morrison, a 22-year-old Austin Peay student who interned in his office.

Stanley acknowledged in an interview with WREC radio host Ben Ferguson that he had an affair. ............

Paul Stanley, Tennessee State Senator, Quits After Affair With 22-Year-Old Intern

ERIK SCHELZIG

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Tennessee lawmaker resigned from the state Senate on Tuesday after his extramarital affair with a 22-year-old intern was revealed by an investigation into an extortion case.

"Due to recent events, I have decided to focus my full attention on my family and resign my Senate seat effective August 10," Republican Sen. Paul Stanley wrote in his resignation letter.

Court records show that Stanley, 47, told agents investigating a blackmail case that he had a sexual relationship with intern McKensie Morrison. Her boyfriend, Joel Watts, is charged with trying to extort $10,000 from Stanley in April. Investigators say Watts demanded the money in exchange for not releasing to the media explicit photos of Morrison that Stanley had taken in what appears to be Stanley's apartment.

The senator, a married father of two who represents suburban Memphis, had signaled he would remain in the legislature, but he said Tuesday that he decided to step down about an hour before submitting his resignation letter. ........

The inhabitants of Brass City wake up, sad and devastated, each and every morning. No one is sure why, and people won't talk about it, mostly because they don't know how to explain it.

Jeremy is fresh out of rehab, trying to put his life back together, but his thoughts are becoming distorted. He can't help but "see" more than he wants to, and a shadowy figure seems to be having the same problem. Cleaning up has never been so difficult, but it's never been so important, either.

Who knew less than 140 characters could potentially cost more than $50,000, in the form of a defamation lawsuit?

That's something Amanda Bonnen is discovering the hard way.

In May, the Chicago resident did what many of Twitter's millions of users do--she tweeted a complaint. Specifically, she tweeted THIS complaint:

Today, Horizon Group Management filed a lawsuit against her, alleging that her statement damaged the company's business reputation.

According to the complaint filed in Cook County court today, Bonnen "maliciously and wrongfully published the false and defamatory Tweet on Twitter, thereby allowing the Tweet to be distributed throughout the world.".............

what do chimney sweeping and using a tanning bed have in common?

they are both a no no

(we didn't need a study to know about tanning beds. i have yet to understand why people use them. my friends use them. i ask them why and i don't get a good answer. years ago i stopped going out in the sun. i am not a fair woman, but i put two and two together and decided it may be late but i WAS going to protect my skin. as some of you are aware, i'm dealing with a bout of skin cancer on my arm, now. my doc thinks he got it all but we're still in the 'we're waiting to see' phase. anyway, DON'T SIT IN THE SUN, DON'T SIT IN A TANNING BED. just DON'T)

Study: Tanning beds as deadly as arsenic

LONDON – International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas. For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The new classification means tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

The research was published online in the medical journal Lancet Oncology on Wednesday, by experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization.................

the nutmeg grater: do i believe this?

because i'm very interested

i wanted to post more about daniel boyd and his family. remember they have NOT been convicted of anything. they (he and his two sons) have only been charged with some crimes.

this story is a strange one though. odd. not odd that someone would convert to islam but odd in that someone would convert (from a suburb in america that is) and go all jihad (if that's true of course. it had NOT been proven yet). it's odd someone from a suburb, a born american, would convert and become VERY strict to the point of not wanting to attend prayer in a mosque because the mosque wasn't strict enough.

i do hope mr boyd and those arrested with him get a fair trial. if they are guilty they should be punished accordingly. (if not, they should be let go)

i have always said and will always say i am more afraid of homegrown terrorists than those in afghanistan, iraq, iran, africa, south america, europe or anywhere else on earth.

whether they be white supremacists or abortion foes or lunatic christian evangelical fanatics or yes even radical muslims.....i am afraid of those HERE more than anywhere else.

oh and i'm betting there are far far far far far far far far far far far far far more NON muslim terrorists in the united states than muslim ones. no doubt about it

From Suburban D.C. Childhood To Indictment on Terror Charges Washington Post Staff Writers
Daniel Patrick Boyd, once a defensive lineman at T.C. Williams High School, is an unlikely symbol of

the homegrown terrorist threat. The son of a Marine, Boyd spent his early years in the Washington suburbs living a typical American childhood. Recently, he blended with his family into a picturesque suburb of Raleigh, N.C., where he gardened and was friendly with his neighbors.

But law enforcement officials, including four SWAT teams that deployed to Boyd's home this week, point to the Muslim convert as the latest example of a radicalized American who exported jihad. Boyd, 39, is scheduled to appear in federal court in North Carolina on Thursday with his two sons and four other young men he allegedly instructed in militant techniques......

Jason Torchinsky is a guest blogger on Boing Boing. Jason has a book out now, Ad Nauseam: A Survivor's Guide to American Consumer Culture. He lives in Los Angeles, where he is a tinkerer and artist and writes for the Onion News Network. He lives with a common-law wife, five animals, too many old cars, and a shed full of crap.

One of my dogs, Virginia, went blind late last year. I knew it was coming; she has glaucoma, and lost sight in one of her eyes a while before. We'd been keeping the other eye alive with lots and lots of medicine, but the vet told us it was just a matter of time. So, when the morning came and I found her running around crazily all over the house, nose to the ground, I shouldn't have been surprised.

Still, I was pretty alarmed. And while I read lots on the internet about this, and even saw the articles that said not to panic, the dog will adapt, those articles were almost invariably written by the sort of hyper-caring earth-mother women who could say taking care of a limbless, eyeless, incontinent sea lion was an easy, rewarding experience anyone could do. I didn't really buy it.

So, when she went blind, I did end up going a bit nuts. She's a profoundly sweet-natured and smart dog, and seeing her struggle, without benefit of understanding why, was wrenching. I looked into research into artificial vision, surgeries, other medications; everything was either a pipe dream, insanely expensive, and almost nothing guaranteed any vision retention. It was crazy, and while I was being an idiot, Virginia was out there, rewiring her little brain to make it work.

US charges seven with terrorism

Seven people in the US state of North Carolina have been charged with plotting terror attacks abroad, including Israel and Jordan.

Prosecutors say the alleged ringleader Daniel Boyd, 39, trained in Afghanistan and fought there between 1989 and 1992.

They say he then set up his own training and fundraising organisation, and even recruited his two sons.

The seven are accused of conspiring to kill, kidnap and maim but not of carrying out actual attacks.

There has been no reported response from the defendants.

Mr Boyd lived in a lakeside home near Raleigh, North Carolina, from where he ran a dry-stone walling business.

His sons, aged 20 and 22, are among those charged.

'Military practice'

The indictment says Mr Boyd is a veteran of training camps for militants in Pakistan and Afghanistan............

Daniel Boyd, Six Others In North Carolina, Charged With Terror Conspiracy

MIKE BAKER

RALEIGH, N.C. — A father, his two sons and four other North Carolina men are accused of military-style training at home and plotting "violent jihad" through a series of terror attacks abroad, federal authorities said Monday.

Officials said the group was led by Daniel Patrick Boyd, a married 39-year-old who lived in an unassuming lakeside home in a rural area south of Raleigh, where he and his family walked their dog and operated a drywall business. But two decades ago, Boyd, who is a U.S. citizen, trained in terrorist camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan and fought against the Soviets for three years before returning to the United States.

An indictment released Monday does not detail any specific terrorist plans or targets overseas, although it claims some of the defendants traveled to Israel in 2007 with the intent of waging "violent jihad" and returned home without success................

Isn't it time to dismantle the metal detectors, send the guards at the doors away and allow Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights by being free to carry their firearms into the nation's Capitol?

I've been studying the deep thoughts of senators who regularly express their undying loyalty to the National Rifle Association, and I have decided that they should practice what they preach. They tell us that the best defense against crime is an armed citizenry and that laws restricting guns do nothing to stop violence.

If they believe that, why don't they live by it?

Why would freedom-loving lawmakers want to hide behind guards and metal detectors? Shouldn't NRA members be outraged that Second Amendment rights mean nothing in the very seat of our democracy?..........

Whale Wedged on Cruise Ship Bow

A rare whale was discovered wedged on to the bow of a cruise ship when it docked in a Canadian port.

The 70ft fin whale, a threatened species in Canada, was found when the Sapphire Princess docked at the Port of Vancouver, the cruise company said.

It said it had "strict whale avoidance" measures and it was unclear where, when or how the whale became stuck.

Tourists looked on as the dead whale was examined by fisheries department staff.

The cruise ship had arrived from Alaska about 0630 local time on Saturday...........

Revealed: the secret evidence of global warming Bush tried to hide

Photos from US spy satellites declassified by the Obama White House provide the first graphic images of how the polar ice sheets are retreating in the summer. The effects on the world's weather, environments and wildlife could be devastating

Graphic images that reveal the devastating impact of global warming in the Arctic have been released by the US military. The photographs, taken by spy satellites over the past decade, confirm that in recent years vast areas in high latitudes have lost their ice cover in summer months.

The pictures, kept secret by Washington during the presidency of George W Bush, were declassified by the White House last week. President Barack Obama is currently trying to galvanise Congress and the American public to take action to halt catastrophic climate change caused by rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

One particularly striking set of images - selected from the 1,000 photographs released - includes views of the Alaskan port of Barrow. One, taken in July 2006, shows sea ice still nestling close to the shore. A second image shows that by the following July the coastal waters were entirely ice-free................

Racist Web Posts Traced to Homeland Security

By KIRK SEMPLE

After federal border agents detained several Mexican immigrants in western New York in June, an article about the incident in a local newspaper drew an onslaught of vitriolic postings on its Web site. Some were racist. Others attacked farmers in the region, an apple-growing area east of Rochester, accusing them of harboring illegal workers. Still others made personal attacks about the reporter who wrote the article.

Most of the posts were made anonymously. But in reviewing the logs of its Internet server, the paper, The Wayne County Star in Wolcott, traced three of them to Internet protocol addresses at the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees border protection.......
