Contractors investigated in shooting of Afghan civilians

From Mike Mount and Suzanne Simons
CNN
WASHINGTON (CNN) — The U.S. military in Afghanistan is investigating a group of military contractors who shot and wounded two Afghan civilians in Kabul earlier this month, according to the military.

The contractors worked for a company called Paravant, which is affiliated with Xe, the new company name for the security contractor Blackwater Worldwide, according to sources familiar with the incident. Paravant is owned by Erik Prince, who is also the owner of Xe.

“The contractors were involved in a vehicle accident in Kabul at approximately 9 p.m. May 5. While stopped for the vehicle accident, the contractors were approached by a vehicle in a manner the contractors felt threatening,” according to a U.S. military press release.

“The contractors fired upon the vehicle, reportedly wounding two Afghans,” the statement said.

The wounded Afghans were taken to a hospital, according to the release.

The press release did not identify the contracting company. A spokesman for the U.S. Military’s Central Command, which oversees combat in Afghanistan, said, “Because the incident remains under investigation, there’s no further information available beyond the information in the press release.”

But a senior source in the contracting industry said that, while off duty, the four contractors were allegedly drinking before the accident...........

Real Live Astronauts are Watching ‘Star Trek’ in Outer Space - Right Now
By Rebecca Cathcart
Right about now in outer space, three men are crouched in a node of the International Space Station, watching J.J. Abrams’ reboot of “Star Trek” on a laptop. They chose the node, said NASA spokeswoman Nicole Cloutier, because it was “dark and quiet” and would be “a good spot” for three “Star Trek” fans to hunker down for the ultimate viewing experience.

“They just ended their crew day,” said Ms. Cloutier, “so they’re watching it now, or just finishing it up. They can go all day without seeing each other, so this is a good chance to get together.”

Michael Barratt, the American astronaut, requested the film before boarding a space-bound shuttle in March, said Ms. Cloutier. He told NASA officials that he was a lifelong admirer of the TV series and did not want to miss this latest big-screen installment while off-planet. It was beamed up to them - really - after being reformatted by NASA technicians in a five-hour procedure Thursday night and beamed up Friday morning.

Feds Bust Yacht Pimped Out With Endangered Animal Hides, Tusks
By Tim Elfrink in News
Listen up, foreign billionaires who enjoy pimping out your pleasure yachts with the finest in endangered African animal skins: You might want to keep that luxury boat away from Florida. Surrounded by stuffed lions, mounted, roaring tiger heads and massive carved ivory tusks, U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta announced this morning a major bust of illegal, poached African creatures found on a yacht in the Port of the Everglades.

"Personally, I think these are rather creepy," Acosta admonished the animal poachers of the world. " I wouldn't want to have them in my home.".....

........When they walked into the yacht, inspectors found nearly every surface covered in illegal fur or poached ivory: two leopard-hide rugs, seven ivory tusk ornaments, rugs made from zebra, tiger and jaguar skin, even an anaconda purse. Everything found on board is illegal, thanks to the international Lacey Act, which banned products made from endangered species after 1973........

An Army spokesman confirmed Thursday that Maj. Steven Hutchison is the oldest member of that branch to be killed in combat.

According to The Associated Press' database of soldiers killed in Iraq, Hutchison is the oldest member of any branch killed in combat operations.

Hutchison, of Scottsdale, died on Sunday after a homemade bomb went off near his vehicle in Al Farr, Iraq. .....

Why The Beastie Boys Made A Star Trek Cameo

By Meredith Woerner

it's sure as shite time!

last saturday i was out at brunch. i saw a mom and son having a bite and a beverage. the son was quite obviously gay. i really wasn't watching their interactions. i happened to be outside having a smoke while they were leaving. mom grabbed a hold of her son and gave him a hug and a big sqeeze. she then walked to her car with her arm around his waist. she got in the drivers side, he, the passenger side.

i watched them drive away with a tear in my eye. i was quite touched.

this is eye opening

The FBI's Least Wanted

Special agent Bassem Youssef was one of the FBI's up-and-comers—fluent in Arabic, ambitious, with a record of spotting threats and cracking terrorist cells. So of course the bureau sent him to rot in a desk job.

—By Bruce Falconer

The FBI's highest-ranking Arabic-speaking agent is a ghost. He goes to work each day, but walks the halls like an empty suit. Fellow agents whisper about his loyalty and talk about throwing him "off the roof." Bassem Youssef, after all, is the whistleblower at the center of two of the FBI's biggest ongoing scandals: its rampant abuse of national security letters to access confidential information on US citizens, and its failure to recruit Arabic-speaking agents. He's sued the bureau for discrimination and has been sidelined to a paper-pushing job. Yet he won't quit—he remains determined, he says, to fight the war on terror, even if he has to battle his bosses to do it.

It wasn't always so. In the mid-1990s, if you were to call the FBI and ask for Bassem Youssef, the switchboard operator would tell you there was no such person. Known in those days by his alias, Adam Shoukry, Youssef was a star counterterrorism specialist, one of only a few agents in bureau history whose work was deemed so sensitive that the attorney general allowed him to go undercover within the FBI itself. Almost a full decade before the 9/11 attacks, he managed to penetrate "Blind Sheikh" Omar Abdel-Rahman's Islamic Group, which carried out the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. (Some of its key members later joined Al Qaeda, which Youssef identified as a threat long before it was on most intelligence agents' radar.).........

Obama Shifts on Abuse Photos
Releasing Images of Detainee Mistreatment Would Endanger U.S. Troops, President Says

Washington Post Staff Writer
A month after making public once-classified Justice Department memos detailing the Bush administration's coercive methods of interrogation, President Obama yesterday chose secrecy over disclosure, saying he will seek to block the court-ordered release of photographs depicting the abuse of detainees held by U.S. authorities abroad.
Obama agreed less than three weeks ago not to oppose the photos' release, but he changed his mind after viewing some of the images and hearing warnings from his generals in Iraq and in Afghanistan that such a move would endanger U.S. troops deployed there. .......

Undersupplied US soldiers forced to steal water in Iraq

By David Edwards and John Byrne
You thought the lack of armor-plated Humvees was bad.

US soldiers are now being forced to steal water in Iraq. With supplies tight, and the number of trucks carrying potable water even tighter, troops have resorted to stealing water from civilian contractors. Many have also reportedly suffered from dysentery because they were forced to drink untreated water from Iraqi wells.

The shocking news aired Wednesday on Houston-based CBS affiliate KHOU.

It gets worse. Soldiers say the situation has become so dire they were forced to raid the United States’ own airbase in Baghdad for bottled water. They found the water stored in pallets held by civilian contractors, who were supposed to be distributing it.

“It really hit me the day I was with my commander and we’re stealing water,” Army Staff Sgt. Dustin Robey told the station, describing his mission to collect water at the Baghdad International Airport. A second soldier said he’d also stolen water from civilian contractors: “We’d just run out and start grabbing cases of water and start throwing them in the gunner’s hatch,” Private Bryan Hannah quipped.

Soldiers averred that they’d been given two to three liters of water per day by their commanders. But according to the Army’s own field manual, the human body can lose as much as four gallons of water daily in the desert.

Two to three liters isn’t enough, Robey said. “You’ll see guys throw up, you’ll see them pass out.”..........

Sgt. charged with 5 deaths in Liberty shooting
By Michelle Tan - Staff writer

A sergeant from the Bamberg, Germany-based 370th Engineer Company, 54th Engineer Battalion, has been charged with shooting and killing four soldiers and a naval officer Monday at Camp Liberty, Iraq.

Sgt. John M. Russell, 44, first joined the Army National Guard in 1988; he went into the active Army in 1994. He is charged with five counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault.

Russell, who was on his third Iraq deployment, remains in custody in Iraq.

U.S. officials in Iraq also revealed that two of the five service members killed were officers and doctors, one from the Army and the other from the Navy. Both were assigned to the 55th Medical Company at the Liberty Combat Stress Control Center.

The other victims were enlisted soldiers.

Special agents from Army Criminal Investigation Command continue to investigate the shootings.

The Army also has initiated an AR 15-6 investigation to determine if there are adequate mental health facilities in Iraq, said Lt. Col. David Patterson, a spokesman for Multi-National Corps-Iraq.

The suspect was referred to counseling the week before the shootings and his commander determined that it was best for him not to have a weapon, said Maj. Gen. David Perkins, a spokesman for Multi-National Force-Iraq.......

Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film As 'Fun, Watchable'

an interesting article and insight into

whole foods. sure, whole foods is one of the stores i shop at. i'm not naive enough to believe they're the be all and end all of corporations. after all they ARE a corporation, dreadlocks, noserings or not. i do have to say, the last time i talked to a few employees about working conditions they were VERY positive. that was a while ago though.

one thing is for sure. whole foods is ALL about making money and profit. a bit may go to charity or into profit sharing but we all know the bulk goes into the coffers of the big guys. always has, always will

Is Whole Foods Just Another Evil Corporation?
By Sharon Smith, CounterPunch.

Whole Foods Market is a highly profitable corporation that far outperforms its competitors, while maintaining an aura of commitment to social justice and environmental responsibility.

Its clientele is attracted not only to its brightly lit array of pristine fruits and vegetables, organically farmed meats and delectable (yet healthy) recipes, but also to the notion that the mere act of shopping at Whole Foods is helping to change the world.

In 2007, Whole Foods launched its "Whole Trade Guarantee," stating its aim as advancing the fair trade movement -- encouraging higher wages and prices paid to farmers in poor countries while promoting environmentally safe practices.

In addition, Whole Foods announced that 1 percent of proceeds will be turned over to its own Whole Planet Foundation, which supports microloans to entrepreneurs in developing countries. Meanwhile, the company's Animal Compassion Foundation seeks to improve living conditions for farm animals, while stores periodically hold "5 Percent Days," when they donate 5 percent of sales for that day to an area nonprofit or educational organization.............

............

Using a carrot and very large stick, Mackey managed to "convince" Whole Foods workers across the country to vote in 2004 to dramatically downgrade their own health care benefits by switching to a so-called consumer-driven health plan – corporate double-speak for the high-deductible/low-coverage savings account plans preferred by profit-driven enterprises.

Mackey advised other executives in the same 2004 speech, "[I]f you want to set up a consumer-driven health plan, I strongly urge you not to put it as one option in a cafeteria plan, but to make it the only option."...........

Soldier kills at least 4 in clinic shooting
By Michelle Tan - Staff writer

An American soldier got into a verbal altercation with staff at a combat stress clinic on Camp Liberty, Iraq, returned to the clinic and shot five people Monday, killing at least four soldiers, said an Army official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The soldier, whose identity had not been released Monday evening, was in custody, officials said.

The Associated Press reported late Monday that the accused shooter was a sergeant.

The shooting occurred at Camp Liberty, a large U.S. base on the western edge of Baghdad near the city’s international airport.

According to the Army official, details of the incident continue to emerge as investigators continue their work, but preliminary reports show the soldier was was being escorted to the clinic, for reasons not yet explained. Once inside, he got into a verbal altercation with the staff and was asked to leave. The soldier and his escort got back into their vehicle and began to drive away, according to the Army official.

At some point during the drive, the soldier got control of his escort’s weapon and ordered the escort out of the vehicle, the Army official said. The soldier then drove back to the clinic, walked in and began shooting, the official said.

Army reports show five people were shot; four of them, all soldiers, were killed. Their identities have yet to be released, pending notification of their families............

Tennessee state senator calls guns in bars a ‘dreamy scenario’

Ordering a shot in a Tennessee bar may never be the same again.

The Tennessee House has passed a bill that would allow guns to be carried in bars where alcohol is served. Law abiding citizens should be allowed to carry guns in bars, Tennessee State Senator Doug Jackson told Fox’s Brian Kilmeade on Monday, calling armed drunks in bars a “dreamy scenario.”

“If we look at other states and their experiences, what we see are millions and millions of citizens that are allowed to do so and they do so without incident or problem,” said Jackson.

“You can sit back and dream up all sorts of scenarios in your mind,” he continued. “I would just point out that 40 states allow citizens to carry guns where alcohol is served. Thirty-three states have laws similar to Tennessee that allow guns to go where alcohol is served and they do so without incident.”

“Senator, you ever seen a bar fight?” asked Kilmeade.

“Yes,” he said.

“You ever been in one?” the host pressed......

we know a us soldier killed five and wounded more at camp liberty in iraq. we know he was apprehended. we know it happened at a 'stress' clinic. not much else

i am very sorry for these losses. my heart goes out to all of these men and women and their families.

Official: U.S. soldier kills 5 at Camp Liberty

BAGHDAD — A U.S. soldier opened fire at a counseling center on a U.S. base Monday, killing five fellow soldiers before being taken into custody, the U.S. command and Pentagon officials said.

The shooting occurred at Camp Liberty, a sprawling U.S. base on the western edge of Baghdad near the city’s international airport and adjacent to another facility where President Barack Obama visited last month.

A brief U.S. statement said the soldier “suspected of being involved with the shooting” was in custody but gave no further details. Nobody else was hurt, the military said. It was unclear what provoked the shooting.

In Washington, Pentagon officials said the shooting happened at a stress clinic, where troops can go for help with the stresses of combat or personal issues. It was unclear whether those killed were workers at the clinic or were there for counseling. No details were released about the gunman.

“Anytime we lose one of our own, it affects us all,” U.S. spokesman Col. John Robinson said. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all the service members involved in this terrible tragedy.”.......

CBS Sports' Feherty suggests "any U.S. soldier" would attack Reid and Pelosi

Washington, D.C. - Today, Media Matters for America demanded an apology for columnist and CBS golf analyst David Feherty's assertion that "if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."

"Mr. Feherty's violent comments about Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid are disgusting," said Eric Burns, President of Media Matters. "Suggesting that our troops would attack the leaders of the very democracy they've sworn to sacrifice their lives for is an insult to their integrity, honor, and professionalism. CBS Sports should demand its golf analyst apologize to our soldiers."

In a feature for the April issue of D Magazine, five writers - including Feherty - were asked to explore "how the Bushes will affect our lives in Dallas." Feherty wrote in his piece:

From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this, though: despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death. ...........

Except the couple's cringe-inducing yard sign and Confederate flag aren't actually funny, given what happened Thursday evening to 7-year-old Donald Coffey Jr.

The Muhses followed through on their sign's promise – although, it's not at all clear yet that Coffey, his father and friends were actually trespassing when they stopped their vehicles near the Muhses' house. Not that trespassing would make shooting a shotgun at total strangers in pitch blackness even remotely sane, necessary or legal.

Donald Coffey Jr., his father and friends were on their way back from joy riding near a levee and swimming in the Trinity River around 9 p.m. Thursday when homeowners Gale and Sheila Muhs fired at them with a 12-gauge shotgun, police say..........

html mencken gets all hot and bothered by marie jon (who was writing about god telling us who we can and cannot fuck and when and how and how women rush home after work to clean and men are somehow stuck on freeways. hey, i don't get it either). but html mencken soon gets a karate chop to the nuts (so to speak). you MUST read it, it is WICKED FUNNY!
(note: of course html mencken has a sense of humor, but sadly NO, marie does not. her shite is serious. well i don't think it's serious but SHE does. hey marie, when did god tell you who to fuck?)

OH MY GOD

by HTML Mencken

Marie’s talking about SEXYOUALL INTERCOURSE! BOIOIOIOIOINNNNNNNNG!!!

Here I am, rather like a wingnut, home alone on a Saturday night. GF worked late, it rained here all day.. bleh. And Marie, sly vixen that she is, totally knew it. She knew that Tintin would make fun of a Warner Todd Bukkit post, which would in turn make me click through and then click again until until I wound up at WTB’s personal site, stunned to see Marie there making sexy talk (which she never does at Renew America). It was like walking into a backwoods methlab to find Megan Fox parked on the couch looking glamorous and chattin about jetset shit. Marie caught me by surprise, and when I was weak.

God’s plan for marriage includes companionship and sexual enjoyment. It is undeniable that the Almighty created marriage as the place where both man and woman meet their sexual needs. Within Holy Matrimony, there is a deep abiding love that is naturally expressed in the act of intimacy.

You know, when I mentally strike out the “God” and “marriage” crap, this is pretty steamy stuff.

However, at times, life can become complicated and hurried. Many couples become distracted to the point where they spend less quality time together within the bedroom.

Today’s women often work and are tired after a long day. When they walk into the door, they immediately begin tending to the children, cleaning, helping with schoolwork, and preparing the evening dinner. Men frequently get up early to hit the freeways. They spend eight or more long hours at work before their tedious commute in heavy traffic to return home. All of this stress takes a toll on marriage. Too often, couples collapse into bed with hardly enough thought or energy to say good night.

This gets it all wrong, Marie. First of all, in a proper relationship between liberals, neither person “works;” both simply cash the welfare checks sent to them by Barack Hussein Hitler who coerces the money from those hardluck wealthy people who never can seem to catch a break. I admit it can be a chore to walk to the mailbox and back, but somehow we manage the task and have energy reserves left for tantric sex. Then there’s the “children” thing. Sorry, Marie: again, this is not applicable. I’ve had all my kids aborted. No distractions that way, plus it comports with liberalism’s longterm goal to make the white race extinct. Then there’s the commute thing. Pfft. Silly Marie, liberals use public transport! So, yeah baby, I gots the energy.........
