U.S., Shiite forces clash
Accounts vary on whether gunbattle was in mosque

BAGHDAD, Iraq // this year if At least 17 Iraqis were killed last night when U.S. and Iraqi special forces stormed a mosque and clashed with Shiite Muslim militiamen, police officials said, further inflaming the country as its leaders struggle to form a new government and stem sectarian violence.
The American military, clearly worried about exacerbating a combustible situation that many Iraqis are already describing as civil war, denied that American forces had entered the mosque. It said in a statement that 16 insurgents were killed and 15 captured in a nearby combat operation against a terrorist cell.
The differing versions of what happened seemed to underscore growing friction between the American-led military forces and the fractious Iraqi government, on a day that was punctuated with rising sectarian tensions, deepening leadership problems and at least 40 mutilated bodies surfacing in the streets - 30 of them beheaded.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, echoing U.S. commanders, said yesterday that the U.S. could withdraw a significant number of troops from Iraq Iraqi forces are able to assume greater control of the country's security...........

I thought women were smarter then men?
I respected Christine Todd Whitman until she went to work for W.
I really can't imagine how it is they go through life believing all of this all the while 39 headless people were found this weekend. It is absurd.
Condi was talking to those four people in the insane section of the hospital who still support bush. She knows the rest of us are on to her so she just aims at what's left of bush's base.
donviti, i think the count went higher than 39 since you commented. it's sickening. absolutely sickening. i won't say women are smarter than men (but perhaps i'm thinking it. one can never tell with me)
yup she's talking to the madmen (and women)
Silly, unpatriotic Americans! Those people don't exist. Everything is peachy in Iraq. The Iraqi's aren't revolting, they are happy that we are providing a role model for their society.
Wow- this whole lying through the teeth thing is easy when you don't think about the unspeakable truths that do exist. Unfortunately, I think about those truths and I want to smack the shit out of my government. I'm not proud to be an American. I know I'm lucky to have the things that I have and know some semblance of peace, but how can I support a government - and a country - that is secretly worse than any foreign regime???
Ok, I'm done venting for now.
we need to invent a new word or words because this is well beyond cognitive dissonance
I see a U.S. military spokesman said, claiming it was not a mosque, but a 'community center', "It's a matter of perception, I think." So the next time somebody in your community comes barging into First Lutheran with his guns blazing...
Wouldn't life be great if we just lived in Bush's, or Rice's, or Cheney's, or Rumsfield's imaginary dreamworld?
i agree cv rick, and mr shakespeare and mr shock and ms roxy - cause this one (world) is WAY TOO PAINFUL
they sit there and actually say, we are LOVED in iraq, we are HELPING in iraq (i am SURE we do help WHEN and IF we can but i'm talking overall in general). we don't belong there, we NEVER belonged there
