Well, figure he's on a revenge jag dictated by a ghost (who may or may not be the Devil, or completely imaginary, or both), plus he's just had a couple of his former friends done in. So you could say he's in an odd space.
But note all the references in the play to "seeming" and play-acting and deliberate alteration of appearance. Ultimately it's a play about masks, and the skull is what's left when all the masks come off.
i'm not going to pretend to understand most of his works. i'm more a fan of takes offs of his works. like the movie scotland, pa and mazursky's tempest.
Yeah, I have a friend I go to plays with who finds them a challenge. What she's discovered is that the tragedies are easier than the comedies, and the later plays are easier than earlier ones.
