'NYT,' AP Among Those Hit By Computer Worm
NEW YORK The New York Times and The Associated Press were among several
media companies affected by a computer worm Tuesday that targeted corporate
networks with the Windows 2000 operating system, company officials said.Times
spokeswoman Catherine Mathis said the paper "experienced difficulties with our
computer systems," but added that "it was very hit and miss...and did not affect
the production of the paper." Mathis noted [in an interview with E&P] that
newsroom computers at the Times' Manhattan offices were affected, but said other
company systems such as those at the Times-owned Boston Globe or the company's
computer service center were not. "Our IT people administered patches and the
problem was rectified."Along with the Times and AP, the problem also struck ABC
and CNN. ABC News producers had to use electric typewriters Tuesday to prepare
copy for their "World News Tonight" broadcast, according to spokesman Jeffrey
Schneider. The worm is causing the most problems at companies with large,
networked computer systems, rather than among individual computer users, David
Perry, a security analyst at Trend Micro Inc., a computer security company, said
Tuesday.Microsoft Corp. released a "critical" patch Aug. 9 for the
vulnerability, which is most severe on Windows 2000 systems. Those computers can
be accessed remotely through the operating system's "Plug and Play" hardware
detection feature. Protective patches, plus instructions for remedying infected
systems, are posted on Microsoft's Web site....................
