i don't have a stake in this EXCEPT as a human being with a heart and a soul AND A BRAIN. everyone IS equal. period. stop dancing around END DON'T ASK DON'T TELL. gays have been serving in the military since all time. they have just as much right to serve (should they so wish to) as anyone else. would i serve along side a gay person if i was in the military? would i be a partner to a gay police officer? a gay firefighter? would i sit next to a gay person in my office? at the movies? in a bar? at a wedding? you bet i would. well, as long as they weren't an asshole of course. gay peeps just like straight peeps can be assholes too. don't want to be around straight, gay, trans, bi or whatever if they're an id-jit of course.

As Pressure Grows, Obama Addresses Gay Rights Group
He Promises to End 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

President Obama, struggling to keep promises he made during last year's campaign, renewed his pledge to end the military's ban on openly gay service members as he appeared at a fundraising dinner for the nation's largest gay advocacy group on Saturday night.

"I will end 'don't ask, don't tell,' " Obama said at the Human Rights Campaign dinner. Recounting the ongoing effort to bring full civil rights to gays and lesbians, the president said: "I'm here with a simple message: I'm here with you in that fight."

Obama did not offer specifics on how he would advance the cause of allowing gays to serve openly in the military, or of same-sex marriage, two areas where his inaction as president have disappointed many gay supporters..........

As for my take... Barack Obama just promised us that if he becomes president, he's going to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell, the Defense of Marriage Act, and get ENDA passed. It was a bit surreal. I'm sitting at a fundraiser for the No on 1 effort in Maine (that Obama didn't even bother to mention), and we were all just speechless (actually, hardly speechless - and I thought yelling at the TV was long since over). Obama repeated his campaign promises. That was it.

What's particularly disturbing is how President Obama contradicts himself, and his own administration, when talking to a gay crowd. The president claimed that he's for treating gay couples just like married couples. Then why is he against letting gay couples marry? The president claimed that it doesn't matter if we're at war and working on health care and lots of other important issues, we must forget ahead on gay civil rights. Then why is Obama's own administration putting out the talking point that they can't move ahead on gay rights until the wars are over, until health care is over, until Obama has less on his plate? Even General Jones last week said we can't do DADT because we're at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. But President Obama claimed today that precisely because we're at war it is important to lift the ban now.
