i did read about a young man jumping from the george washington bridge

and dying. i thought it was tragic then and i knew none of the circumstances. now, with this story, it is far far far worse than even i could have imagined.

when are we going to be able to accept each other for who we are? when are we going to NOT be afraid of someone because they may be a bit different than we are?

this story is so unsettling. to the family and friends of tyler clementi, i am so very sorry for your tragic loss.

how ANYONE could videotape and live broadcast that video tape................................

the wapo article is ap so i can't print any of it. read it at the link

Victim of Secret Dorm Sex Tape Posts Facebook Goodbye, Jumps to His Death
By EMILY FRIEDMAN

A Rutgers University freshman posted a goodbye message on his Facebook page before jumping to his death after his roommate secretly filmed him during a "sexual encounter" in his dorm room and posted it live on the Internet.
Items belonging to 18-year-old Rutgers student Tyler Clementi were found by the George Washington Bridge last week, according to authorities. Clementi's freshman ID card and driver's license were in the wallet.
Clementi's post on his Facebook page, dated Sept. 22 at 8:42 p.m. read, "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry."
Clementi's body has not been recovered, but police have pulled an unidentified male body from the Hudson River just north of the bridge.
Paul Mainardi, the attorney representing the Clementi family, released a statement confirming Clementi's suicide..............

and the two students (allegedly) responsible for videotaping mr clementi MUST be charged with a hate crime. what are they currently being charged with you ask? why the simple and highly inadequate INVASION OF PRIVACY

Sept. 29) -- Two Rutgers University students have been arrested on charges they illegally streamed video of a classmate's gay sexual encounter over the Internet. The alleged victim in the case committed suicide, his family confirmed.

According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan, freshmen students Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, N.J., and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton, N.J., have been charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for using a camera to view and transmit a live image of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi on Sept. 19. Clementi, a resident of Ridgewood, N.J., was a freshman at the university and Ravi's roommate.Ravi has also been charged with two additional counts of invasion of privacy for allegedly attempting to use the camera to view and transmit another encounter involving Clementi on Sept. 21.

Rutgers police said their probe began after they learned that a camera had been placed in a student's dorm room without his permission.............

Private Moment Made Public, Then a Fatal Jump
That night, the authorities say, the Rutgers University student who sent the message used a camera in his dormitory room to stream the roommate’s intimate encounter live on the Internet.
And three days later, the roommate who had been surreptitiously broadcast — Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old freshman and an accomplished violinist — jumped from the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River in an apparent suicide.
The Sept. 22 death, details of which the authorities disclosed on Wednesday, was the latest by a young American that followed the online posting of hurtful material. The news came on the same day that Rutgers kicked off a two-year, campuswide project to teach the importance of civility, with special attention to the use and abuse of new technology.
Those who knew Mr. Clementi — on the Rutgers campus in Piscataway, N.J., at his North Jersey high school and in a community orchestra — were anguished by the circumstances surrounding his death, describing him as an intensely devoted musician who was sweet and shy..........

How terribly tragic. I think this warrants a hate crime charge as well. But the prosecutor would have to prove the roommate would not have posted the tape if the sexual encounter was hetero, but posted it only because it was gay.

If it had been a young woman taped having sex with her boyfriend, she might still have jumped off the GWB, but I wonder if it would have made the news.

yes debra, that won't happen (being able to PROVE it was a hate crime). i know what

stray, i think they WOULD have had news coverage if it was a woman too. i hope we never get to find that out. i know there are plenty of people who are unknowingly filmed. it's ugly and wrong. it's NOT funny or a joke. THAT (to most people) is private and should remain so

I would argue that it's not even to do that much with filming. Children can be absolutely savage toward each other, even and especially the 18 year old college freshman kind, because now sexuality (of any kind) is in the mix, as well as the misapprehension that they are now adults and thus have the right to behave any way they want. This has always been the case, it's just that now technology ups the ante.
