rick

(as in cv rick), i believe vonda n. mcintyre is my favorite science fiction writer. what a coincidence you wrote about the lack of sci fi books being read AND me finding this just by chance

Classic Tale of Extraterrestrial Medicine from Vonda N. McIntyre -- Free Online

A doctor on an alien planet has only three tools in her medical kit, and they are all living snakes. Using a kind of biotechnology in her own body, she's able to synthesize tailor-made drugs from the snakes' venom after exposing them to people who are ill. Leading a nomadic life, she moves from town to town on an alien world, trying to help out people who are often as afraid of her as they are anxious for her services. Some of you may recognize this as the plot of Vonda N. McIntyre's dreamy, beautiful short story "Of Mist, Grass, and Sand," now available for free on the author's website.............

I love Vonda McIntyre . . . Dreamsnake, anyone?

Thanks for posting this. Science Fiction has boundless possibilities.

I just started Hominids by Robert Sawyer and Brasyl by Ian McDonald.

You should try Nalo Hopkinson as well.

it's very hard to find a vonda book in a bookstore by the way. i ALWAYS check every time i accidentially wander into one of the mega ones. they never seem to have her. it's odd. (i know i can get her stuff on the net so i'm not worried about ME. i'm worried that others won't see her books OUT)

i don't know nalo hopkinson. i'll look for all three

You won't like Hominids. It starts with a rape scene.

no i won't like it but that doesn't mean i would think it not worth reading. if something is well written and is written with a purpose (in the case of a rape scene), or to make a point, or it's important to the story, i'd understand. wouldn't like it, but i'd understand.

(i.e. the lovely bones by alice sebold)

In my opinion, it was an unnecessary rape scene. The author used it as a shortcut to sabotaging a possible relationship between main characters. Lazy technique, I think. I wrote a review on my review site (and Amazon), but I didn't mention the rape scene.

i keep forgetting you have the review site as well. i'll swing on by

i keep forgetting to review on amazon too. i mostly buy knitting books there. they deserve reviews too
