Grass-Roots Group of Troops Petitions Congress for Pullout From Iraq

By Ann Scott Tyson Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, October 25, 2006; Page A13
More than 100 U.S. service members have signed a rare appeal urging Congress to support the "prompt withdrawal" of all American troops and bases from Iraq, organizers said yesterday.
"Staying in Iraq will not work and is not worth the price. It is time for U.S. troops to come home," reads the statement of a small grass-roots group of active-duty military personnel and reservists that says it aims to give U.S. military members a voice in Iraq war policy..

....."Just because you put on the uniform of our country doesn't mean you've given up your rights as a citizen," said J.E. McNeil, a lawyer for the group and executive director for the Center on Conscience & War, a Washington organization that protects the rights of conscientious objectors......................

....Navy Seaman Jonathan Hutto of Atlanta was the first service member to sign the appeal.
"I hear discussions every day among my shipmates about the war in Iraq and how it doesn't make any sense at this point," said Hutto, who is based in Norfolk and served from September 2005 until March on a ship off Iraq's coast. "There is no victory in sight, and war is still inevitable." He said he opposes the war because of its human and economic tolls, adding that the billions of dollars should be spent on jobs and education at home.
Marine Corps Sgt. Liam Madden, 22, served in Iraq's restive Anbar province from September 2004 until February 2005 and found his opposition to the war intensified after he returned to the United States. "I don't think any more Iraqis or Americans should die because of the U.S. occupation," he said, expressing disappointment that Iraqi elections in January 2005 did not lead to a decline in violence................

You people are idiots. Jonathan served off of the "coast of Iraq"??? What clue does he have about war? Did he voluntarily sign up to join the United States Navy? No one forced him to be there. Maybe he didn't understand what being in the military meant??? My best friend served in the Marines from the beginning and my husband, who is in the navy, in the middle of the desert, right now is an actual hero. They join and follow the orders of their Commander in Chief because they know what is right and choose to protect the ones that they love at all costs, even those idiots who don't understand where their freedoms come from. Nobody made the crybabies who joined the military for the "free benefits" sign those papers. I did it myself, I was there, they make it VERY clear what you are expected to do. If you signed those papers thinking you were getting a free ride, then you really are stupid and the American people don't need you defending what you don't even understand. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, if you don't believe in this government and what all of these Marines, Sailors, Soilders and Airmen have sacrificed to give you the freedoms that you so liberally enjoy without a second thought, then you can all go to hell!

i respectfully disagree with you. i am CERTAIN mr hutto served on that ship HONORABLY. he did his duty (as all who signed did). if they are still in the service (which i think they are) they will CONTINUE to do their duty. however, they, like MOST of the rest of us, KNOW WE SHOULD NOT BE IN IRAQ. we have NO BUSINESS in iraq. they DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH 9/11.

most EVERY single service member i have spoken to (and i have spoken to quite a few) think it's a mistake as well.

we helped to start that civil war over there. we are now paying the consequences

the 'decider' my big fat ass. the man is an absolute joke around the whole wide world. he and his court are directly responsible for the deaths of 2,810 (as of 2:33 am) men and women (OUR men and women) in iraq.

FOR WHAT? you tell me FOR WHAT?

Jonathan Hutto IS NOT A HERO. I served for 26 years in the Service and I knew what I was getting into. I never questioned policies because, like the hundreds of thousands of patriots before me, I only impose policies. This is the way of the military. Your IDIOT "HERO" was just another person looking for welfare, found the consequence of signing not to his liking and wants to get out by creating hate and discontent within the ranks.
Spend the money for domestic issues? I'm all for it IF we are the only peace-loving people in this planet. Unless you have another place to go when our country gets overwhelmed by Muslim militants, I suggest that you wake up and smell the gun powder. WE ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS PLANET, LADY. And there are countries out there who will destroy us in a heartbeat if we weaken our military might. Do us a favor both of you and leave our country - go live in your own dream world out there somewhere.

anonymous #2, first, thank you for serving your country for 26 years (and i do mean that most sincerely).

and the second thing i'd like to say is; i'm so sorry you're full of hate for other cultures AND full of fear. the iraqis did NOT attack us. they had NOTHING to do with 9/11. i personally think our invasion of THEIR country was unlawful (and more).

i think when young men (and women) join the military they DO know they will be expected to defend their country. i don't think they expect to be shipped off to a distant land FOR NO REASON other than to line a bunch of old white men's pockets.

last i heard anonymous #2, this was america and i am (STILL, at least for the time being) ALLOWED TO SPEAK MY MIND
thank you for visiting my blog.
