Condoleezza Rice at Boston College? I quit

By Steve Almond May 12, 2006
An open letter to William P. Leahy, SJ, president of Boston College.
DEAR Father Leahy,
I am writing to resign my post as an adjunct professor of English at Boston College.
I am doing so -- after five years at BC, and with tremendous regret -- as a direct result of your decision to invite Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to be the commencement speaker at this year's graduation.
Many members of the faculty and student body already have voiced their objection to the invitation, arguing that Rice's actions as secretary of state are inconsistent with the broader humanistic values of the university and the Catholic and Jesuit traditions from which those values derive.
But I am not writing this letter simply because of an objection to the war against Iraq. My concern is more fundamental. Simply put, Rice is a liar.
She has lied to the American people knowingly, repeatedly, often extravagantly over the past five years, in an effort to justify a pathologically misguided foreign policy.
The public record of her deceits is extensive. During the ramp-up to the Iraq war, she made 29 false or misleading public statements concerning Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and links to Al Qaeda, according to a congressional investigation by the House Committee on Government Reform.......

I really liked this letter too. Hopefully, someone with a conscience with snatch him right back up.

The Saudis are actually feminists. Kind of like the US was by liberating Afghani women from their burqas. How can you not see this?

Perhaps Tony Snowwhite should have said, "Aw hell. I'm not grabbing that swarthy little sticky guy simply because I'm not here to actually answer your questions".

The ship, from every angle, is sinking. Picking up the pieces is going to be interesting, to say the very least.

Rose, I find it strange that Catholics, Methodists, Quakers, MANY religious communities in the US have expressed their opposition to this war or have stated that this war does not meet their written 'formal Criteria".

And yet, when do you see them do anything about? If a choice activist sought an academic chair or a high position in a faith based organization, there would be opposition. Yet not about Iraq and the actions done in our name. They should be shunning these clowns! What the hell is up with this? nevermind. Hypocrisy, American style. I know.

I wouldn't go that far Mz. Branford. I mean, Quakers do a lot of sitting in silence. No seriously, a lot of Quakers are like "embedded" journalists, but on our side. If you haven't, check out Voices in the Wilderness. Now THAT'S faith in action! Kathy Kelly's my hero.

Isaroseis: you have your next aural missile over at home. Scroll down a wee bit though.

i admire it too but the trouble is that once he vacates his post it is another post that can be filled by an apologist.

i watched and old movie the other day that was written by hg wells and there was a a line in it where the good guys say they felt guilty for children bringing children into a dreadul world.

the response was "why should we leave the breeding to the evil and ignorant, won't that make things worse."

i found that striking, then again, i am very near 30 years old and at the stage where i am getting more and more amused by children instead of just being pissed off that you can't have a decent conversation with them.

mr rabbit in the midst, tony snowhite! I LOVE IT TO DEATH (so to speak)

and e l b - i know many catholics AND quakers who ARE doing something about their beliefs. not sure if it is actually religious or just personal but it doesn't matter to me. they too are putting their asses where their words are (and getting arrested for it to boot) (yup mr (my favorite uncle) remus - you're right about those wacky quakers)

graeme, i reread his letter and it's even better the second time around.

mr the tub, ah to be 30 again......one can only dream.

i do find the older i get, the less patience i have (for ignorance and what i perceive as WRONGNESS)
