U.S. trades justice for oil

By Susan Cohen Tue May 16, 6:40 AM ET
Sometimes, holding your nose just isn't enough. You have to do the whole "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" monkey routine. That's what Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice and the rest of the Bush administration want us to do about their Libyan decision.

Rice would have us believe that
Iran and
North Korea will follow Libya's lead in giving up weapons of mass destruction. That's a bad joke because Iran and North Korea do have weapons of mass destruction or soon will have them. That's real power.
Libya had nothing except some stuff it purchased from Pakistan that might some day, somehow, have been used to make nuclear weapons. They traded nothing of value for full exoneration for blowing up Pan Am 103.
The secretary of State also says we will now be discussing human rights, freedom of speech and expression, and "political reform consistent with
President Bush's freedom agenda" with Libya. This is even a worse joke. Anyone in Libya who criticizes or even questions the wisdom of Col. Moammar Gadhafi has the life expectancy of an ice cube in the desert.
No, our new embrace of the murderous and megalomaniacal Gadhafi is all about oil. He has it and we want it, and we will pay even more than $70 a barrel for it. We will pay with our own security and with our national dignity.
No one in the world will be fooled byRice's attempt to put a blanket of respectability over this deal. Gadhafi blew up an American plane, and my daughter was on it. He has never shown any remorse for this act of terrorism; indeed, he has never even admitted Libya was responsible. The Bush administration just pretends he did in order to get around that sticky little point. ...............

over 50 years ago, Fidel Castro took over Cuba and threw out the mafia, United Fruit, and several hotel companies. We refuse to forgive what we percieve as a debt Cuba owes to American Companies for property seized and revenue sacrificed. To this day we maintain embargo and deny our citizens the right to visit Cuba (it's beautiful, by the way, and coming from Mexico the Cuban Authorities stamp a blank piece of paper the size of your passport - instead of the passport - as a keepsake).

However, for the deaths of 270 humans (189 Americans), our president says, "no biggie, you're forgiven." What??!?!? Forgiven?

Take money from the mob and your embargo'd forever. Kill Americans and it's no big deal.

It's so sickening. And there are bone heads who buy the line that Gadhafi's so-called "coming around" is proof that we did the right thing starting a war in Iraq!

In 1982, I worked with a woman whose finance, a college professor, was considered the last of the true 1960s radicals--and a lofty genius at that. I once listened to him extolling the virtues of Gadhafi strictly on the basis that he opposed Ronald Reagan's America. (This was pre-Pan AM, but the professor was supposed to be a genius!)

The one thing that has truly carried over from the 60s, as far as I'm concerned, is the observation that the world is a freakin' Ball o' Confusion!

there is evidence gadhafi NEVER had wmd to begin with (the beginning of the makings of 'em sure, but NOT the actual weapons).

he has his oil and we want it.

he is evil and as i said absolutely NO better than saddam.

why? i just cannot fathom this. i cannot fathom many things this regime has supported and not supported.

i am NO fan of fidels BUT cuba NEVER should have been closed to us.

That's true; Ghadafi has caused lots of trouble in England in the past as well.

Michele sent me here.

hi jean-luc! ghadafi WAS responsible for blowing up pan am 103. that alone is reason enough for NONE of the world to put him on their christmas card list. he's EVIL.

Michele sent me to see you, Rose.

While the oil production of Libya isn't sufficient to interest the US and Bush, I suspect the 30-40 billion barrels still under the sand might interest them. It's a sad state of affairs but I don't see it changing under this administration. Oil will decide foreign policy as long as we have to import such a large proportion of our oil.

I'll take your word for the syphilis thing, Rose.
