sara libby makes a point

i had NO idea eunice johnson died. i sure knew casey johnson died. what did casey do? get arrested, make out with tila (meghan's bff), fight with ex grrrlfrends, have her trophy adopted daughter taken away by her mother and on and on (i don't mean to be cruel here. i am just saying there is NO reason we all needed to keep a non newsworthy person in the news. OUR faults on that one.)

Beauty in Black & White: Casey Johnson and Eunice Johnson Die on Same Day

Props to Salon’s Joan Walsh for noting the eery coincidence of the news of Eunice Johnson, widow of the man who created Ebony magazine, and Johnson & Johnson heiress Casey Johnson dying breaking on the same day. More than their similar but unrelated names, the two women were striking symbols of the world of beauty.

Eunice Johnson gave Ebony its name, created a makeup line and fashion shows, and held some high-profile positions at Johnson Publishing, the publishing house that puts out both Ebony and another influential black magazine, JET. The company she helped launch and run said: “Under her direction, Mrs. Johnson made a tremendous impact on the fashion industry, showcasing the best in style on African-American models of various shapes, sizes and skin tones.”..........

not ALL women in the arab world are silent. nadine bedair isn't. she's very brave for speaking out. i'm sure i see some not so veiled threats in at the very least the words of sheik mohamed gama’i.

here's a rather comprehensive article on seitan

while the author calls it 'the next big thing', it's no where near 'NEW'. vegetarians and vegans have known about it for YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS. i've been making it and eating it forever.

where did i 'DISCOVER' it? well, in an asian restaurant of course! it wasn't on the menu. it was saved for those ...who knew....

there was a WHOLE different menu. duck, chicken, pork, shrimp, and on and on. oh, and none of it contained duck or chicken or pork or shrimp. it was ALL seitan. and it was ALL DELICIOUS.

unlike tofu (although if you freeze tofu for a couple of weeks then defrost it, it changes consistency. it turns CHEWY and that's a GOOD thing), seitan is chewy and meat-like in appearance. well more so than other meat substitutes.

Juicy and Tender, Seitan Is Quite Possibly the Best Fake Meat -- But There Is a Downside
By Anneli Rufus, AlterNet.

What if the next big thing to revolutionize the lives of vegans and vegetarians was waiting in the wings? What if this next big thing was amazingly high in protein, amazingly low in fat and carbs, relatively low in sodium, and cholesterol-free, yet with a taste and texture more like real meat than any other analogue ever devised? What if the next big thing was chewy and exuded meaty juices and sometimes even required a knife to cut?

Imagine, then, its power as a secret weapon to convert carnivores and to solace those guilt-ridden vegans and vegetarians who still dream of bacon, brisket, sloppy joes, beef Stroganoff, souvlaki, pepperoni, pigs-in-blankets, corned-beef hash and chicken drumsticks: things that tofu cannot replicate, not even with the best imagination in the world. ............

and from fatfree vegan kitchen here's a recipe i've been making for at least 15 or 20 years (i saw a similar recipe called 'kofu ribs' in vegetarian times but i can't seem to find that original recipe. that's where i got my original ideas from. i don't think fatfree vegan kitchen existed yet. well not in it's current form)

barbecued seitan ribz

it's not MY exact recipe but it's CLOSE. for the nut butter, i use cashew butter. it gives it an extra somethin' somethin'. i also use chopped REAL onions. really. it MAKES my ribs. they just magically turn sweet after they've been cooked.

‘N-Word’ Sign Dogs Would-Be Tea Party Leader

By David Weigel

Dale Robertson, a Tea Party activist who operates TeaParty.org, is getting stung for an old photo — taken at the Feb. 27, 2009 Tea Party in Houston — in which he holds a sign reading “Congress = Slaveowner, Taxpayer = Niggar.”

After the ResistNet listerv promoted “Liberty Concerts” to be held by TeaParty.org, a source passed on this photo of Robertson, after the jump.

Update: Josh Parker of the Houston Tea Party Society tells me that Robertson was booted out of the event for this sign......................

Entire staff quits after congressmember defects to GOP

By Daniel Tencer

Parker Griffith, the Democratic House representative from northern Alabama who last week announced he was jumping ship to the Republicans, has lost his entire staff.

Saying her old boss had made a "mistake," Griffith's now-former chief of staff, Sharon Wheeler, announced Monday that the House representative's entire congressional staff -- from press secretary to interns -- had resigned in protest of their boss's new political leanings.

Wheeler sent out a "sharply-worded" statement Monday announcing the staff's intentions and implying that Griffith had abandoned northern Alabama's long history of voting for Democrats, The Hill reports.

"Alabama's 5th district has deserved and has benefited from great Democratic conservative leadership since Reconstruction. And until now they had it,” The Hill quoted Wheeler as saying...

Brit Hume: Tiger Woods must become Christian to be forgiven

By David Edwards and Gavin Dahl

Buddhism is inferior to Christianity when it comes to forgiveness of sins, according to Fox News pundit Brit Hume. Tiger Woods should turn his back on Buddhism and become a Christian to be forgiven for cheating on his wife, Hume told Fox News' Chris Wallace Sunday.

"The extent to which he can recover seems to me depends on his faith," said Hume. "He is said to be a Buddhist. I don't think that faith offers the kind of redemption and forgiveness offered by the Christian faith. My message to Tiger is, 'Tiger turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world."........

the three are innocent!

just because they spew hate and untruths and helped stoke a WHOLE country into a deeper homophobia hole,, THEY'RE INNOCENT I TELL YA! and we should forgive them, unlike the gays whom we should KILL. they were duped. they didn't know if they said gays were the devil and gays are evil and gays assault young children and gays aren't human, people would take them seriously (i can't believe that part of it but hell, yes, these people ARE taken seriously here there and everywhere, to my deep sorrow and embarrassment as a fellow 'human')

here's what one of 'em said..........."“That’s horrible, absolutely horrible,” he said. “Some of the nicest people I have ever met are gay people.”

yup, some of his BEST FRIENDS ARE GAY

let me tell these three and everyone here and in uganda something. if YOUR god hates gays so very much (along with goddess knows who and what else) then i want NO PART of YOUR god. and by the way, didn't your god create man (and of course WOMAN) IN her/his image? and remember this: whatsoever a man soweth, that he shall also reap

After Americans Visit, Uganda Weighs Death for Gays

By JEFFREY GETTLEMAN

KAMPALA, Uganda — Last March, three American evangelical Christians, whose teachings about “curing” homosexuals have been widely discredited in the United States, arrived here in Uganda’s capital to give a series of talks.

The theme of the event, according to Stephen Langa, its Ugandan organizer, was “the gay agenda — that whole hidden and dark agenda” — and the threat homosexuals posed to Bible-based values and the traditional African family.

For three days, according to participants and audio recordings, thousands of Ugandans, including police officers, teachers and national politicians, listened raptly to the Americans, who were presented as experts on homosexuality. The visitors discussed how to make gay people straight, how gay men often sodomized teenage boys and how “the gay movement is an evil institution” whose goal is “to defeat the marriage-based society and replace it with a culture of sexual promiscuity.”.............

.............The three Americans who spoke at the conference — Scott Lively, a missionary who has written several books against homosexuality, including “7 Steps to Recruit-Proof Your Child”; Caleb Lee Brundidge, a self-described former gay man who leads “healing seminars”; and Don Schmierer, a board member of Exodus International, whose mission is “mobilizing the body of Christ to minister grace and truth to a world impacted by homosexuality” — are now trying to distance themselves from the bill..........

wtf?

companies don't have to 'name names' (of the chemicals they use that is) if it COULD harm their bottom line? WHAT ABOUT OUR LIVES???????????????????

Use of potentially harmful chemicals kept secret under law
By Lyndsey Layton

Of the 84,000 chemicals in commercial use in the United States -- from flame retardants in furniture to household cleaners -- nearly 20 percent are secret, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, their names and physical properties guarded from consumers and virtually all public officials under a little-known federal provision.

The policy was designed 33 years ago to protect trade secrets in a highly competitive industry. But critics -- including the Obama administration -- say the secrecy has grown out of control, making it impossible for regulators to control potential dangers or for consumers to know which toxic substances they might be exposed to.

At a time of increasing public demand for more information about chemical exposure, pressure is building on lawmakers to make it more difficult for manufacturers to cloak their products in secrecy. Congress is set to rewrite chemical regulations this year for the first time in a generation.

Under the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act, manufacturers must report to the federal government new chemicals they intend to market. But the law exempts from public disclosure any information that could harm their bottom line.....................

Bette Midler: Rare Footage of The Divine Miss M Performing at the Continental Baths

Posted by Richard Metzger

Although for myself, I can’t even comprehend not liking Bette Midler—for me it was love at first sight—I am told that she is an acquired taste; and one that my darling wife—who has great taste in music and everything else, I hasten to add—has not acquired. This morning, I was blasting her first LP, The Divine Miss M from 1972 while Tara was running errands—I haven’t heard it in years—and it simply knocked me out. Produced by Barry Manilow, Ahmet Ertegun and the Grammy-award winning producer Joel Dorn, with a crack set of session musicians and back-up singers like Cissy Houston and Melissa Manchester, The Divine Miss M is nothing less than the unveiling of a very major talent on the world, as Midler’s 40+ years at the top of her profession attest to. She didn’t write any of the songs, but trust me, she owns them all. She’s one of those people who just oozes talent and concerning the quality of her voice and its incredible power, well, she belongs in that smallest circle of all singing, all dancing, all acting diva divas, like Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli and the great Broadway talents like Ethyl Merman. She’s got the lungs, no two ways about it.,,,,,,,,,,

Safety of Beef Processing Method Is Questioned

By MICHAEL MOSS

Eight years ago, federal officials were struggling to remove potentially deadly E. coli from hamburgers when an entrepreneurial company from South Dakota came up with a novel idea: injecting beef with ammonia. The company, Beef Products Inc., had been looking to expand into the hamburger business with a product made from beef that included fatty trimmings the industry once relegated to pet food and cooking oil. The trimmings were particularly susceptible to contamination, but a study commissioned by the company showed that the ammonia process would kill E. coli as well as salmonella..........

instead of 2.4 million going to help kill gays

or at the VERY LEAST to discriminate against them, and toward discriminating against women and worse, you COULD have given your dirty money to a more worthy cause. but no. you gave it to someone who in my opinion is far away from someone with a good soul. i don't understand why people give money to pastors of mega 'churches'. it is incomprehensible to me. i know a LOT of people don't even have enough to live comfortably, yet they give (and the giving part doesn't bother me as to the WHO they give it to)

Fuck You, I Won’t Do What You Tell Me!
by Sweary

Just to get it out of the way, I’m going to start by telling you that I’m not surprised that the Bishop of Limerick has had to resign over his atrocious mishandling of child sex abuse cases. Nor am I shocked that a parish priest in Kerry has publicly put forward his support for a convicted sex offender, despite not having been in court when evidence against the man was examined. And I’m hardly flabbergasted at the news that a Cork-based Presbyterian minister has condemned an LGBT-friendly carol service as “crossing the line”. This is what I’ve come to expect from Irish men of the cloth - blinkered stupidity and a depressing distance from the sense of justice and morality that we suppose them to be weighted with. So no need to bitterly reply, “What else did you expect?” I expected nothing else. That doesn’t mean this shit isn’t worthy of comment, though.

But dismissive comment. We’re an enlightened people - no, let me stop you there before you snigger and snort. We are. We live in times of Information and Education, where knowledge is prized and available to everyone. Libraries are cheap, internet access is cheap, informed cop-on is cheap. We’ve grown up, have we not? So why the fuck do we need these moral guardians, these purveyors of a fear and loathing badly masked behind snippy concern and quivering shoulders? No one needs to preach to me guff about the true path. My moral compass is just fine. As should yours be....................
