why did this twelve year old die?

i'll tell you why, because his family had NO DENTAL INSURANCE. yes, that's right, he died from a bad tooth.

why can't we as human beings understand how each of us DESERVES the right to proper medical care and that does include dental care.

i know many people who WORK FULL TIME and have NO coverage. some of them have children and that means their children aren't covered either. that to me is CRIMINAL.

we are spending BILLIONS on killing people in iraq (don't even tell me ONE of you believes king george and his court actually IS trying to build a 'DEMOCRACY' over there. it's NOT a culture that thrives in a 'democracy'. hell, we ain't thriving in OUR democracy right now either). why can't we use that money (or a large part of it) to care for our nation's elderly AND children?

it's immoral
it's soul-less

to the family and friends of deamonte driver - i am sorry for your loss

For Want of a Dentist
Pr. George's Boy Dies After Bacteria From Tooth Spread to Brain

By Mary OttoWashington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, February 28, 2007; Page B01
Twelve-year-old Deamonte Driver died of a toothache Sunday.
A routine, $80 tooth extraction might have saved him.

If his mother had been insured.
If his family had not lost its Medicaid.
If Medicaid dentists weren't so hard to find.
If his mother hadn't been focused on getting a dentist for his brother, who had six rotted teeth.
By the time Deamonte's own aching tooth got any attention, the bacteria from the abscess had spread to his brain, doctors said. After two operations and more than six weeks of hospital care, the Prince George's County boy died

I just blogged on the same thing.
I completely agree with you. This broke my fucking heart. What is wrong with us?

The problem is the American Welfare system. Not for the poor but for professionals like Doctors and Dentists.
There just are not enough Doctors or Dentists to go around. And thes there are just want to make as much money as they can.
But clearly you don't need to go to school for 20 years to pull a tooth. The only real to this situation of white-collar greed is some good old fashion capitalism. Lets Nurse Practicioners, PA's, and Dental Hygentists do some work that Doctors and Dentists just don't want to do.

Bye the way I go to medical school.

it's the fault of many yet no one will step up to the plate. as i've said before NO CHILD, rich or poor should ever suffer. it's on ALL of us

The problem is the wall we've erected to intentionally deny health care to the needy - - - making it hard to access, making it an imposing obstacle for the poor.

We've taken care decisions out of the hands of doctors and nurses, and put in the unfeeling hands of a 'system' of paper pushers propelled by plausible deniability on any consequences.

It's never anyone's fault, it's just the system . . makes me sick.

you said it rick. the doctors and nurses have VERY little say anymore

two examples:

a couple of years ago, when i went to pick up one of my meds at the pharmacy it was NOT what my doc prescribed. they told me this is what the INSURANCE COMPANY wanted me to have. SHITE. they did check with my doctor of course and it was the same med, just made by another company. still, that was NOT what i was prescribed BY MY DOCTOR

2- i had surgery a while back. my doc told me insurance was NOT going to pay for me to stay overnight but he wanted me to stay. so we would work something out (like him leaving me 'in recovery' overnight instead of 'checking me in'). turns out when i stopped being groggy, i wanted to go home and i did. but of course that is NOT the point. a medical PROFESSIONAL wanted me to stay overnight. the insurance company said no

and rick, i HAVE insurance. can you imagine if i didn't????????????

It's sad. It's fucking criminal. God Bless America!

Rose, I can imagine. I'm uninsured, because I can't afford $325 a month.

Maybe this year.

jamie, if we don't vote in a change in 2008 WE DESERVE THIS KIND OF TREATMENT!

oh rick damn! i was uninsured for 1 1/2 years. working the whole time, but uninsured. it was NOT pretty. damn i'll keep my fingers crossed for you

Thanks, Rose.

By the way, I'm getting really annoyed by crap-slinging nitwits who continually say that more capitalism is the answer to all the problems their privatization heroes have foisted on us. Get a clue, put your copy of Atlas Shrugged back on the bookshelf where it belongs, and take a look at what's happening in the world.
