why didn't kuklo use his OWN name (i have to say if he ALLEGEDLY submitted the article under others names)? how much was kuklo paid by medtronic (allegedly, although i think that part has been proven)? were the actual findings about infuse true or were THOSE altered? really why try to eff up another doctor's (who was supposedly YOUR BUD) name? why didn't the medical journal further check the story?

Discredited Research Study Stuns an Ex-Army Doctor’s Colleagues

Dr. Romney C. Andersen, a Walter Reed Army Medical Center surgeon, was surprised last summer when his neighbor, a fellow doctor, congratulated him on a new medical journal study bearing his name.

“What study?” Dr. Andersen asked.

Soon, he was not the only person asking questions. Army officials, alerted by Dr. Andersen, began an investigation. They uncovered an apparent case of falsified research by a doctor who had befriended Dr. Andersen when they both worked at Walter Reed, treating American soldiers severely injured in Iraq.

The full report of that Army investigation, recently obtained by The New York Times, provides an unusually detailed anatomy of a suspected case of medical research fraud — one all the more disturbing because it occurred at the nation’s premier military research hospital................

...............The disputed journal article was written by a former Army orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Timothy R. Kuklo, who is now a medical professor at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Kuklo, the investigation found, forged the signatures of Dr. Andersen and other Army doctors on his study and never showed it to them before it was published...................

Pentagon’s Spin On GI Bill Is ‘Offensive Nonsense’

Yesterday, ThinkProgress highlighted the latest reason from the Bush administration to oppose a real GI Bill for troops, offered by Senators Webb and Hagel. The Pentagon spokesperson said, in part:
[W]e are certainly concerned that this would be eligible to them after only two years of service. We think pegging it to a longer period of service — the number we have in mind, at this point, is six years of service — that the longer you stay in, the sweeter the benefits are to you. Six years would show a commitment to service. … The last thing we want to do is provide a benefit — or the last thing we want to do is create a situation in which we are losing our men and women who we have worked so hard to train.
Wow. There are a few very serious flaws in this logic:
First, the time of service isn’t a measure of commitment to service. What about the troops who served under six years, did a few tours in Iraq, and came back without a limb, and could no longer serve? Have they shown less of a commitment to America? I would love for this spokesperson to go to Walter Reed and tell anyone there who served three years, but now cannot continue their service, that they haven’t shown a commitment.
Second, no one is leaving the military after two years. I’d note that when you sign up, it’s for an eight year contract, most for four years active..........................

i was running around yesterday morning

doing a few errands before going to my regular sunday brunch with friends. i was only in my car a few minutes here and there.

i didn't hear the WHOLE story but on npr i heard something that boiled that anger up in me again. the reporter/announcer was telling the story of a WOUNDED iraq vet. he was wounded by an ied while trying to rescue others who were also wounded by an ied. the shrapnel came up through his vehicle into his tailbone and part of his spine and intestinal tract. he had to have part of his intestines removed. want to know what happened? the military classified him as NOT BEING DISABLED ENOUGH BECAUSE HE ONLY HAD AN ULCER. yes, i'm serious.

As he lay in the neuroscience unit struggling to recover from one of the worst traumatic brain injuries doctors had seen, he vowed that he'd never come back to Walter Reed.
Last week, he did.
Dunn wanted to thank the doctors, surgeons, nurses, therapists and others who'd helped him survive after most thought he'd surely die.
"This guy here is a miracle," said Solomon Montgomery, a former professional football player turned physical therapist, as he enveloped Dunn in a hug.
"Dude, you look good," said Dr. Stephen Rouse, who restored Dunn's skull using a plastic insert designed by a 3-D computer program.
Since he left the hospital in 2005, Dunn has rebuilt his life. He's living with his dog, Duke, in a condo he bought in Renton, Wash.
His wounds have healed, but scars remain...........

Elizabeth Whiteside, a psychiatric outpatient at Walter Reed Army Medical Center who was waiting for the Army to decide whether to court-martial her for endangering another soldier and turning a gun on herself last year in Iraq, attempted to kill herself Monday evening. In so doing, the 25-year-old Army reservist joined a record number of soldiers who have committed or tried to commit suicide after serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. .........

"I'm very disappointed with the Army," Whiteside wrote in a note before swallowing dozens of antidepressants and other pills. "Hopefully this will help other soldiers." She was taken to the emergency room early Tuesday. Whiteside, who is now in stable physical condition, learned yesterday that the charges against her had been dismissed. ............

Elizabeth Whiteside, a patient undergoing psychiatric treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, should not face a court-martial or other administrative punishment for having endangered the life of another soldier and attempting suicide while in Iraq.
"One of the Army values is integrity, which is defined as doing what is right, legally and morally," Maj. Mervin H. Steals, the investigating officer assigned to conduct a preliminary hearing, wrote in his decision. "The moral thing to do is dismiss these charges, to allow 1LT Whiteside to end her military service and receive the benefits that she will desperately need for the remainder of her life." ............

this soldier, officer, with an EXEMPLARY record COULD get life in prison. her record speaks for itself. she VOLUNTEERED to go to iraq. however, while there, she had a psychiatric episode and attempted to commit suicide. it was in the presence of a psychiatric nurse.

now she is charged with kidnapping, endangering another solider and attempting suicide. the attempting suicide part is true. her doctors at walter reed are on her side. the army is not. they are thinking (quite hard) about prosecuting her.

did you know if you're a psychiatric patient at walter reed, your family is not eligible for the amenities other families are allowed?

After nearly three years as an outpatient at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Staff Sgt. John Daniel Shannon had begun the wrenching process of turning himself into a civilian.
He no longer wore the uniform he loved so much. He sported a short beard and traded his black beret for a baseball cap. Granted a 30-day leave to prepare for retirement as his disability case finally made it through the system, he moved his family to Suffolk, Va., and began to babysit his two kids, clean the house and grow vegetables. Given what had happened to him in Iraq -- the traumatic brain injury from an AK-47 round that shattered one eye and half his skull -- and the chronic post-traumatic stress disorder that followed, that was about all he could handle.
Last week, Shannon, 43, was back at Walter Reed, but not to say goodbye. The doctors' signatures on two time-sensitive forms in his disability file had expired. He would have to be reexamined by his doctors, he was told, and his medical summaries would have to be written all over again. Unfortunately, the sergeant in charge of his disability paperwork had not stayed on top of his case...........

With the fanfare of military music and a jump by paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division scheduled to mark the event, the Army will open an amputee center today at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in an attempt to better rehabilitate the troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who have lost arms and legs.
The $10 million state-of-the-art center at Walter Reed, whose campus is set to close in 2011, features virtual reality rehabilitation equipment, a gait laboratory to help veterans with prosthetics walk and run and a two-story rock-climbing wall -- all tailored to get troops back on active duty or on with their lives as civilians........

but i'm not sure this is the solution. having combat leaders as 'squad leaders' for the wounded at walter reed. the vets at walter reed are recovering. some have VERY serious injuries. i don't think calling squad meetings is a good start. patients need to be individuals. while at walter reed, why not treat them as such? some will continue to be in the military. many will not.

these men and women deserve a solution NOW. not experimentation. stop spending BILLIONS on iraq and other middle eastern countries and SPEND THE F**KING money at home. on our vets AND on our children AND on our elderly AND on education

It was the sort of message that sergeants have delivered to soldiers since time immemorial: Formations would be held three days a week at 7:30 a.m., and attendance was mandatory. "NO EXCEPTIONS!" screamed the e-mail, sent this month by a staff sergeant to his squad.
"I am sick and tired of chasing everyone around when it should be simple," the message read. "This [is] the United States Army NOT the Salvation Army."
Normally, no one in the Army would blink. But the e-mail recipients were stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where many are missing limbs, coping with post-traumatic stress disorder or suffering from brain injuries. The backlash was swift. After fielding a complaint from a soldier's mother, a commanding officer ordered the sergeant to apologize.............

Traveling through Sunni insurgent territory north of Baghdad, the U.S. military convoy was nearing a base when a roadside bomb ripped into the lead Humvee, leaving its gunner, Mike Helms, bleeding and swaying from a strap in the open back.
Helms, 31, a civilian counterintelligence expert with the Army's 902nd Military Intelligence Group, had been sent to Iraq in 2004 to help fill a critical intelligence gap in the area known as the Sunni Triangle. While in Iraq, he lived with soldiers and ate military rations, took fire from mortar rounds and small arms, and clocked hundreds of miles manning a machine gun on the back of a Humvee.
Nevertheless, his status as an Army civilian would leave him stranded in the aftermath of the June 16, 2004, attack, when the bomb hit his Humvee so hard it blew his M-60 off its turret.......

On the military plane that crossed the ocean at night, the wounded lay in stretchers stacked three high. The drone of engines was broken by the occasional sound of moaning. Sedated and sleeping, Pfc. Joshua Calloway was at the top of one stack last September. Unlike the others around him, Calloway was handcuffed to his stretcher.
When the 20-year-old infantry soldier woke up, he was on the locked-down psychiatric ward at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. A nurse handed him pajamas and a robe, but they reminded him of the flowing clothes worn by Iraqi men. He told the nurse, "I don't want to look like a freakin' Haj." He wanted his uniform. Request denied. Shoelaces and belts were prohibited.............

He squelched his typically blistering rhetoric against the war in Iraq. Also MIA, as it turned out, was folkie and antiwar activist Joan Baez, who says she was disinvited from the event by Army officials.
In a letter that appears today in The Washington Post, Baez says Mellencamp had wanted her to perform with him and that she had accepted his invitation.................

Obama questions Bush over VA nominee

Following a Salon.com article published yesterday, which revealed that President Bush's nominee for the Under Secretary for Health at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Michael Kussman, led a task force that found serious problems at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as early as 2004, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has sent a letter to Bush expressing concerns about the nomination.
According to Salon.com, the report revealed that wounded veterans of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were "frustrated, confused, sometimes angry" at the care they received at Walter Reed.
"The report shows that top VA officials were involved in the focus group process back in 2004. Michael Kussman, then the acting deputy undersecretary for health, was co-chair of the VA's Seamless Transition Task Force, which produced the final report," wrote Salon.com on Wednesday. "Not only is Kussman still at the VA, but he is also in line to be promoted."
Kussman was also in charge of Walter Reed in the late 1990s..........

Bush apologizes for Walter Reed conditions

President Bush apologized for the poor conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during a visit to the hospital six weeks after revelations of the facility's dilapidated state, according to an AP report.
"The problems at Walter Reed were caused by bureaucratic and administrative failures," Bush is quoted as telling the hospital's patients and staff. "The system failed you and it failed our troops and we're going to fix it."
Bush continued, "It is not right to have someone volunteer to wear the uniform and not get the best possible care. I apologize for what they went through and we're going to fix the problem."
Some were critical of Bush's visit and handling of the scandal. "I'm convinced he would honor them more if he would refrain from using soldiers as props in political theater," said Ret. Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton. "I would be very happy to see him do the Walter Reed visit more like the commander and secondarily as an inspector general, rather than as a politician."................

Mom Donates Laptops to Wounded Soldiers

WASHINGTON -- Laura Brown, a mother with a son who fought in the Iraq war, is trying to improve conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center _ one laptop computer at a time.
The 50-year-old from Cody, Wyo., was chatting on the Internet with the mother of a wounded soldier two years ago when the mother mentioned she had to print out her son's e-mails and take them to him at Walter Reed because there weren't enough laptop computers to go around..........
