U.S. Promises on Darfur Don't Match Actions
Bush Expresses Passion for Issue, but Policies Have Been Inconsistent

By Michael Abramowitz Washington Post Staff Writer
In April 2006, a small group of Darfur activists -- including evangelical Christians, the representative of a Jewish group and a former Sudanese slave -- was ushered into the Roosevelt Room at the White House for a private meeting with President Bush. It was the eve of a major rally on the National Mall, and the president spent more than an hour holding forth, displaying a kind of passion that has led some in the White House to dub him the "Sudan desk officer."
Bush insisted there must be consequences for rape and murder, and he called for international troops on the ground to protect innocent Darfuris, according to contemporaneous notes by one of those present. He spoke of "bringing justice" to the
Janjaweed, the Arab militias that have participated in atrocities that the president has repeatedly described as nothing less than "genocide." .........

(the following is from december 2006)
China and Darfur
The Genocide Olympics?

NEWSPAPERS HAVE been running harrowing ads on the genocide in Darfur. They feature images of suffering coupled with appeals to President Bush to halt it. But the key to this tragedy lies not in the killing fields of western Sudan nor even in the White House. It is to be found instead in Khartoum, Sudan's booming capital. The sleek new office towers sprouting up in the commercial district explain why Sudan's government has resisted American and European pressure to end the genocide. But they also show why Arabs and Asians -- and especially the Chinese -- have the power to influence Sudan and the responsibility to use it.......

i had no idea

king george and his court wanted us to deny the genocide of armenians in 1915. turkey can deny it all they like. it happened. hey, i'm italian and THEY did some NASTY things throughout history. i don't LIKE it, but i'm NOT going to DENY it. when you deny things such as this it just makes it MUCH EASIER for it to happen again.

i have a question for king george and his court-what next, the holocaust (cause you don't want to piss off the germans)?
AND
to all of those who backed out of supporting this measure. you are a bunch of COWARDS
Panel Labels Armenian Killings Genocide

By Elizabeth Williamson Washington Post Staff Writer
A House panel voted yesterday to approve calling the mass killings of Armenians that began in 1915 genocide, defying the White House, which warned that the measure could damage U.S.-Turkey relations.
The Foreign Affairs Committee passed the nonbinding resolution on a 27 to 21 bipartisan vote.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has promised she will bring the resolution to the full House for a vote.
Turkey, one of Washington's most staunch Islamic allies, lobbied hard to kill the measure, launching a multimillion dollar campaign and threatening to curtail its cooperation in the Iraq war. President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates were joined by eight former secretaries of state and three former defense secretaries in condemning the proposal. ......
