i've posted about chiquita before

from the links below you can see i've talked about them (and none too favorably at that) SEVERAL times

it was quite obvious to me, a lay observer, they got a hand slap when they deserved giant fines and jail time and sanctions and more.

so our good friend larisa alexandrovna (well i don't KNOW her but i do respect her and read her) and muriel kane, have the REST of the story

The Department of Justice, Corporations, Buying the Law – Part II: Strange Bargains

By Larisa Alexandrovna and Muriel Kane
Bush US Attorney arranged lenient plea deal with company paying terrorists; Lawyer who helped secure plea deal? Obama’s future Attorney General

When the US Justice Department announced in March 2007 that Chiquita Brands had pleaded guilty to “one count of engaging in transactions with a specially-designated global terrorist” and would be paying a $25 million fine, observers were astonished at the lightness of the sentence.

Between 1997 and February of 2004, Chiquita made $1.7 million in payments to a right-wing paramilitary group, the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), in regions where it had banana-growing operations. During that period, AUC conducted a “dirty war” against Colombia’s left-wing FARC guerrillas, marked by widespread murders of union leaders and farmers, as well as trafficking in cocaine and heroin...........

Shell settles Nigeria deaths case

The execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other people sparked a global outcry

Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to pay $15.5m to settle a lawsuit which accused the oil firm of complicity in rights abuses in Nigeria.

The case, due for trial in the US next week, was brought by relatives of a group of anti-Shell activists executed in 1995 by Nigeria's military rulers.

The families say Shell helped the government to punish the campaigners.

But the company insists it did nothing wrong and said the payment was part of a "process of reconciliation".

Shell official Malcolm Brinded said: "This gesture also acknowledges that, even though Shell had no part in the violence that took place, the plaintiffs and others have suffered."........

they say they have NO choice

they do. it's greed. it's pure and simple greed. the almighty dollar. the green back. i've written about chiquita several times before. how they funded BOTH sides and how THEY WERE COMPLICIT in deaths and torture and displacements. what happened to them? a slap on the wrist is all

what will happen to shell (if they are found guilty that is)? hmmmmmmmmmmmm, i wonder

ANYTHING FOR A BUCK

Suit: Shell complicit in execution of Nigerian rights activist
Stephen C. Webster
A landmark human rights lawsuit, accusing Royal Dutch Shell of complicity in the execution of author and human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa some 14 years ago, will proceed to trial in a New York courtroom.

The Center for Constitutional Rights and Earth Rights International, along with Mr. Wiwa's son, allege the International oil company "financed, armed, and otherwise colluded with the Nigerian military forces that used deadly force and conducted massive, brutal raids against the Ogoni people of the Niger Delta."

They claim Shell was complicit in the 1995 military executions of nine activist leaders, including Ken Saro-Wiwa.

king george and his merry band o' whiteboyz

locked up people for far less than what we KNOW (and they admitted they did) chiquita did regarding terrorist organizations. (it started way before king george's rule. i'm just wondering why THEY weren't punished during his reign since they did in fact associate with terrorists. others had to pay by being jailed with NO direct charges, no representation, no contact with their families AND some were tortured as well. seem fair to you?)

30 pieces of silver? hmmmmmmmmmm
(this is my seventh posting on chiquita. i'm not even going to link to the other ones. they all say the same thing. chiquita supported BOTH sides of TWO TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS. they paid a few pence for the cloth to wipe the blood off of their hands and now they want to just walk away. i'm sickened by it. that's it in a nutshell)

Chiquita seeks dismissal of Colombia death lawsuit
By CURT ANDERSON
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Chiquita Brands International asked a judge Friday to dismiss lawsuits claiming the banana company paid Colombian paramilitary groups that killed hundreds or even thousands of people.

Lawyers for Chiquita insisted that the money it paid over a seven-year period to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia had no direct connection to massacres, kidnappings, assassinations and acts of intimidation committed by the group in banana-growing regions.

"There are no allegations that Chiquita was directly involved in any of these incidents," said Gregg Levy, an attorney for Cincinnati-based Chiquita.

The company acknowledges a subsidiary had paid the right-wing paramilitary group _ known by its Spanish acronym AUC _ and another group. But its lawyers contend the company was essentially extorted by the groups that controlled areas where its bananas are grown.

But lawyers for the Colombian plaintiffs claim in the lawsuits that Chiquita should be held liable for billions of dollars in wrongful death damages, alleging it paid both the AUC and the left-wing Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. The U.S. lists both as terrorist groups........

i have posted about

chiquita many times in the past. this disturbs me a GREAT DEAL

remember, chiquita SUPPORTED TERRORISTS (terrorists who KILLED other people.) remember, chiquita got a SLAP ON THE WRIST

no, my second disagreement with barack obama is eric holder.

Obama goes Bananas...

Apparently, Eric Holder has been nominated as US AG in the Obama administration. This is a sad choice, when so many far more capable people, who don't represent corporate terrorism, should have been considered instead. Holder accepted Obama's offer today.

We all know that Holder helped pardon Marc Rich and after, feeling so badly about it, declared he was done with public service for good.

What bothers me more about Holder is his most recent client, Chiquita Brands, which paid right-wing terrorists and death-squads in Columbia off as part of a protection racket. Chiquita settled with the US government for this and other ongoing human rights violations. Apparently feeling so guilty after the Rich pardon - so much so, that Holder contemplated never going into public service again - he instead represented a corporation funding terrorists in order to turn a buck. Nice, eh?.......

BuzzFlash Editor's Blog: Bush Lets Enablers of Terrorism Go Free, As Long as They are GOP Corporations. The Case of Chiquita.
Submitted by mark karlin on
We haven't finished with Judges David Sentelle and Laurence Silberman and how these Federalist Society, partisan hacks sitting on the D.C. Appellate Court have often had more influence on the direction of our government than Congress as they act as rubber stamp judicial bench advocates for the GOP. We'll be wrapping up our first series on the BuzzFlash editor's blog next week.
But we came across a story that we've posted on BuzzFlash at least a couple of times that we just had to comment on, how the Bush adminsitration gives you a pass if you are a corporate enabler of terrorists.
Read on.
November 18, 2007
On November 14th, we posted a
CNN news article on BuzzFlash with the headline, "Colombian families' suit says Chiquita liable for torture, murder." In the CNN bullet points about the article, you can read, "Chiquita admits paying a group that the U.S. labeled a terrorist organization."
In fact, Chiquita struck a deal with the Bush Administration earlier this year that it would plead guilty to directly paying a terrorist organization, allegedly for the "protection" of its banana fields in Colombia. Naturally, the Bush White House let Chiquita, a member in good standing of the Republican corporate cartel, off with a slap on the wrist. They fined them $25 million, pocket change to Chiquita..........................

wow you kill people (from BOTH the left and the right)

(and everything in between) and you get placed on super secret double secret probation

i want to leeevvvvvveeeeeee in a-mer-i-caaaaaaaaaaaa

By Pablo Bachelet McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Chiquita Brands International, the Cincinnati-based company famous for its banana brand, on Monday made the first $5 million installment on a $25 million fine that it's agreed to pay as part of a guilty plea to charges that it supported a right-wing terrorist group in Colombia.
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth approved the plea deal during a court hearing at which a prosecutor said that Chiquita had made payments to both left-wing and right-wing terrorist groups to buy protection for its employees and facilities in Colombia.
In addition to the fine, the plea agreement places the corporation on five years probation and requires that it set up an internal ethics training program. Last week, the Justice Department decided that no Chiquita executives would be charged.
"This was a difficult situation for the company,'' James Thompson, Chiquita's general counsel, said after the hearing. "We were being extorted and we had to protect the well-being of our employees and their families.''
But Jonathan Malis, the Department of Justice prosecutor, called the payments "morally repugnant'' and said the company may have protected the lives of its workers but "fueled violence everywhere else.''......

why is it some can 'associate' with TERRORISTS while others have their phones tapped for being on some kind of MEANINGLESS 'list' somewhere? why is it a company can be responsible for THOUSANDS of DEATHS and TORTURE and they get a slap on the bannana?

Ex-Chiquita Execs Won't Face Bribe Charges

By Carol D. Leonnig Washington Post Staff Writer
The Justice Department notified Chiquita Brands International yesterday that it will not seek to criminally charge its former top executive and other former high-ranking officers over the company's payment of bribes to a Colombian organization on the State Department's list of terrorist groups.
The multibillion-dollar banana company pleaded guilty earlier this year to making $1.7 million in illegal payments to a right-wing Colombian paramilitary group from 1997 to 2004. Until now, three of its officers were under investigation for authorizing and approving the payments to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, known as AUC, after federal prosecutors warned them in April 2003 that such bribes violated the nation's anti-terrorism laws...........

In Terrorism-Law Case, Chiquita Points to U.S.
Firm Says It Awaited Justice Dept. Advice

By Carol D. Leonnig Washington Post Staff Writer

On April 24, 2003, a board member of Chiquita International Brands disclosed to a top official at the Justice Department that the king of the banana trade was evidently breaking the nation's anti-terrorism laws.
Roderick M. Hills, who had sought the meeting with former law firm colleague
Michael Chertoff, explained that Chiquita was paying "protection money" to a Colombian paramilitary group on the U.S. government's list of terrorist organizations. Hills said he knew that such payments were illegal, according to sources and court records, but said that he needed Chertoff's advice.
Chiquita, Hills said, would have to pull out of the country if it could not continue to pay the violent right-wing group to secure its Colombian banana plantations. Chertoff, then assistant attorney general and now secretary of homeland security, affirmed that the payments were illegal but said to wait for more feedback, according to five sources familiar with the meeting..........
