if you have a daughter or are an aunt or uncle

to a girl, or have friends who have girls, think about this:

Girls flee circumcision in Kenya
At least 300 girls in south-western Kenya have fled from home and sought refuge in churches in a bid to escape forced female genital mutilation (FGM).

The girls, some as young as nine, are at two rescue centres in rural Nyanza province, police told the BBC.

Female circumcision is banned in Kenya, but remains common in some areas where it is considered to be part of a girl's initiation into womanhood.

The traditional ceremonies take place between November and December.

Security

The girls in Kuria District are now in the care of the two churches and Maendeleo Ya Wanawake, a women's organisation. ...........

education is the KEY to stopping this (and almost everything else. EDUCATION)

It is an abomination and you are right, education is KEY. There is also the bullying that took place, that forced a 15 year old to attempt to circumcise herself. She bled to death.

if we only knew.....

not JUST genital mutilation but everything else.

we're worried about what bag goes with what shoes. that's NOT what we should be concerned about

Whenever I remember that most of the 42 tribes have some form of female initiation, it makes me think that stories like this are a drop in the ocean.
Often, the most publicized are those in Maasai land, and the very low schooling rates there as a result of early marriage(preparation for which is female circumcision!)
I recently found someone starting a school to rescue girls through education as she herself was rescued, called Kakenya's Dream

ps, i know it's a drop in the bucket. women are NOT to feel pleasure OR ANYTHING for that matter. they are bought and sold, even by their families. not just in africa either.

wow, just stopped by your blog. what BEAUTIFUL pictures you have. i will read your posts as well.

the reason i decided long ago to look like i look is because when i was a child, my moms would always show me pictures of women who adorned themselves. especially african women. i knew i couldn't put rings around my neck or the like, but i KNEW i could adorn myself.
