USED to roam:
Yellowstone puts 53 wild bison on death row
Wild bison soon to be wild meat By Elizabeth Laden GARDINER — Yellowstone National Park officials lured 53 bison Friday morning to the Stephens Creek bison corrals north of Gardiner within park boundaries. According to a park news release, the bison had crossed the park boundary and moved onto private land. The bison will either be sent directly to a slaughterhouse or to a research facility at Corwin Springs north of Gardiner. Park officials also said they have tried to herd the animals back into the park since early December. In a news release the West Yellowstone-based Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC) condemned the capture and noted that the animals were following their migratory instincts to search for food no longer available in the snow-covered park...........
..........Yellowstone’s bison are “members of the last wild, genetically intact population existing in the United States, and number fewer than 4,600. Most, if not all, will be sent to slaughter without being tested for brucellosis antibodies. The National Park Service is caving in to the unreasonable demands of Montana's livestock industry at the expense of an American icon, our national heritage," said Stephany Seay, BFC’s media coordinator..........
