American Family Wants Asylum in Finland

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) — An American family with three small children has applied for political asylum in Finland, immigration officials said Friday.
The five family members came to Finland on Tuesday from Germany, said Minna Serradj from the Directorate of Immigration.
"It's very unusual for a U.S. citizen to apply for asylum," Serradj said, declining to give details in line with a policy to protect asylum seekers. "I don't remember when we last had Americans applying."
Serradj declined to comment on local media speculation that the parents possibly were seeking to escape serving in the U.S. armed forces in Iraq..............

The speculation mentioned that they might be a service couple seeking to escape an Iraqi deployment is at least in my mind a real possibility. I saw during my time in the National Guard it turn from an organization that knew its part-time, weekend duty soldiers had families and civilian jobs that came first and were willing to work drill weekends around your civilian jobs to an organization whose actions, and in some cases words, let you know your civilian concerns came second to the Guard. There are many service couples in the armed forces and many have had both mom and dad overseas at the same time. Couples are suppose to have childcare plans approved by the units involved for such a possibility but such plans can fall through due to many reasons. There is a chance that this couple's child care plan fell through and that they have no reasonable backup other than putting their kids in foster care. All this is speculation but given what I have seen the army just may not give a damn about that family forcing them to extreme actions.
i know we can't pick and choose our wars. i know if you're in the guard you signed up and have to do your duty.
HOWEVER, we're talking iraq here. it's immoral, it's evil, it's ILLEGAL and it's just plain WRONG
