Blackwater's Man in Washington

By Bruce Falconer
Washington Dispatch: Meet Doug Brooks, whose trade group represents the private military industry's biggest players. He makes hired guns sound like U.N. peacekeepers.
By Bruce Falconer

...............The latter had consumed most of Brooks' time over the past week as he gave close to 40 interviews in three days to reporters seeking comment on Blackwater's Baghdad shoot-out. Wasn't he uncomfortable being the private military industry's unofficial spokesman when one of its most prominent players stood accused of murdering civilians? "No, not at all," Brooks said. "What it's given us the chance to do is get out the point of what IPOA is about, to paint a larger picture, put it in context. Yes, we do have contractors working around the world, doing stuff that's dangerous. Sometimes they're armed, and sometimes innocent people get killed." .............

he makes innocents getting killed sound like just another day at the beach. one thing i WILL say about mr brooks, he is GOOD at his job

does anyone else get the creeps at how often the word PEACE is used in relation to these armed goons? (is goons too strong a word? should i use thugs instead? what about sanguinarious cutthroats?

Thugs, goons, mercenaries, and cutthroats are all good. Some interview on television with one of these guys had them trying to sale the idea of their companies being used in a peacekeeping fashion in world trouble spots since many nation either can’t afford or don’t want the hassle of a large standing army. One of the conspiratorial theories being batted about these days has Blackwater and the other guns for hire companies being used to suppress the American people if they ever feel the need to actively oppose the actions of the government. Right now the best information I believe does not have them with enough thugs to even begin to think about such an operation but if they should be contracted out in the future to act as “peacekeepers” they would have to raise enough mercenaries to be a viable force over a large area. While some would disagree I just can’t see the US army going up against civilians just exercising their rights under the Constitution. But a mercenary force only loyal to the guys paying him, that as they say is a whole other matter. Blackwater and the other guns for hire are snakes that could end up biting us all.

Maybe one day they will have to hire them to protect themselves when the people rise up and go after the politicians.

Oh I pray that day comes soon and they don't have enough mercenary's to protect them.

God Bless.

bb and a-p, i'm not naive enough to think these dudes just came into being under king george's regime. they've been around....BUT it seems they are just allowed to run rampant these days.

i don't want the world to be like this. i want us to set an example. i want others to follow. i want us to be GOOD and MORAL and JUST
