a little background

on yet ANOTHER crack king george nominee (and there are so many, it's hard to keep track)

Bush Surgeon General Nominee (and Methodist Renewal Leader) Charged with Conflicts of Interest

By Frederick Clarkson

George Bush's nominee for Surgeon General has drawn a lot of heat for among other things, his crack-pot anti-gay views as a leader in the United Methodist affiliate of the Institute on Religion and Democracy. But a new report may finally sink his already controversial nomination in a sea of conflicts of interest that have marked his career.
Dr. James Holsinger has also been a longtime leader of the Confessing Movement in the United Methodist Church. The Confessing Movement is a rightwing "renewal group" affiliated with the Washington, DC-based Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD), whose purpose for a generation has been to divide and disrupt the historic churchs of mainline protestantism in the interests of advancing neoconservatism and the religious right.
Holsinger was elected to the highest court in the Methodist Church a time when the IRD-affiliated church "renewal" groups had launched efforts to use church judicial systems to enforce their notions of orthodoxy, particularly on matters related to homosexuality....

just like the proverbial ostrich

bury your head in the sand..........you don't like it? pretend it doesn't exist!

this MAY work if you are three years old. it does NOT work if you are the american public. we should NEVER have allowed all of this to get this far.

it's partially OUR fault. not enough of us questioned the king and his court, or spoke out or said ENOUGH

Ex-Surgeon General Says White House Hushed Him

By Christopher Lee
Washington Post Staff Writer

Former surgeon general Richard H. Carmona yesterday accused the Bush administration of muzzling him on sensitive public health issues, becoming the most prominent voice among several current and former federal science officials who have complained of political interference.
Carmona, a Bush nominee who served from 2002 to 2006, told the
House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform that political appointees in the administration routinely scrubbed his speeches for politically sensitive content and blocked him from speaking out on public health matters such as stem cell research, abstinence-only sex education and the emergency contraceptive Plan B.............

(p.s. ONE MORE TIME..........ABSTINANCE DOES NOT WORK as an effective teaching method for either birth control or sexual health)

Bush nominates anti-gay quack as Surgeon General

Jim gave me this, from United Methodist Daily News. I've excerpted the least complimentary passages.
President George W. Bush has nominated Dr. James W. Holsinger, Jr., 68, currently president of the United Methodist Judicial Council, to become the nation's 18th surgeon general....As word of the nomination spread, media outlets began raising questions about Holsinger's qualifications and past performance, along with questions of continued cronyism on the part of President Bush, as with his previous nominations of Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court and Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General....A Kansas City, KS, native, Holsinger has a Ph.D. in anatomy and a medical degree from Duke University, along with a master's degree in hospital management from the University of South Carolina. He also has a master's degree in biblical studies from multidenominational Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY.Although trained in general surgery and cardiology, and described in President Bush's announcement as a cardiologist, Holsinger has no national board certification in any speciality, according to the web site of the American Board of Medical Specialities.............

............After a stint as chancellor of the medical center at the University of Kentucky, Holsinger was tapped in 2003 by Gov. Ernie Fletcher, also a physician, to serve as the commonwealth's secretary of health.Holsinger's term reached a low point in July 2005 when the Louisville Courier-Journal published a special report showing that Kentucky citizens had the worst health in the United States, primarily through poor individual health habits such as smoking, bad nutrition and lack of exercise. Kentucky ranked second worst nationally for cancer deaths, fifth worst for cardiovascular deaths and seventh worst for obesity, according to the paper.................
