we were NOT going to get raises this year (well our review period for raises comes up in march). i'm not shocked by that and i guess i understand. i'd rather have a job than a raise (and i'd rather my coworkers have THEIR jobs too).

BUT THIS my dears takes stones (and NOT the good kind i mentioned a post or two ago)

Disgusting: Bought Out Merrill CEO Wants $10 Million Bonus

Merrill Lynch & Co. chief John Thain has suggested to directors that he get a 2008 bonus of as much as $10 million, but the battered securities firm's compensation committee is resisting his request, according to people familiar with the situation.

The committee and full board are scheduled to meet Monday to hear Mr. Thain's formal bonus recommendations for himself and other senior executives of the New York company. No decision has been reached, and it isn't known what Mr. Thain will recommend, but the compensation committee is leaning toward denying the executives bonuses for this year, these people said.

Reuters points out that several other Wall Street firms, including Goldman Sachs, will not be giving out bonuses to top executives this year. Though Thain's company was sold to Bank of America after losing a net $11.67 billion this year, Thain argued that it could have been worse........

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid spent the afternoon Monday huddling with Senate leaders and fellow Democrats to try to work out a deal over an update to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. As the FISA update was written, it included a provision for legal immunity to telecommunications companies that facilitated a warrantless wiretapping scheme that Dodd and other Democrats said was illegal...........

Refusing to play 'Whac-a-mole,' White House fires back at Reid

During a White House press briefing today, Deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino had some pointed words for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Responding to comments Reid made this morning at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars about President Bush being in a "state of denial" about the war in Iraq (RAW STORY's coverage is here), Perino fired back that "a quick glance in the mirror" would show that the Democratic senator from Nevada is actually the one in denial..........

...................When asked if verbal sparring between Reid and the White House was appropriate and helpful, Perino replied that the White House would not play "whac-a-mole."
"Look, far be it from us to let us be 'Whac-a-Mole,' and get whacked about the head and not respond. We're going to respond, because it's important for the American people to understand that where we are coming from," she said.
Perino added that the White House was not questioning Reid's patriotism, but had no qualms about resorting to "harsher language" to get its points across..............
