Apocalypse ... Now? Press Explores Bush's Iraq/Vietnam Link

By Greg Mitchell
NEW YORK After years of mocking those who drew comparisons between the U.S. engagements in Vietnam and Iraq, war supporters are now invoking them – led by commander-in-chief George W. Bush, in a much-publicized speech today at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Kansas City. Now, how will the media respond to the “Vietnamization” of rhetoric on Iraq, as unveiled by President Bush today? At least three major papers quickly sought out critics who have tried to debunk it. USA Today located Stanley Karnow, one of the leading scholars on the Vietnam war. “Vietnam was not a bunch of sectarian groups fighting each other,” as in Iraq. “Does he think we should have stayed in Vietnam?” Robert Dallek, author of several celebrated biographies of recent U.S. presidents, including Lyndon Johnson, told the Los Angeles Times: “"It just boggles my mind, the distortions I feel are perpetrated here by the president."We were in Vietnam for 10 years. We dropped more bombs on Vietnam than we did in all of World War II in every theater. We lost 58,700 American lives, the second-greatest loss of lives in a foreign conflict. And we couldn't work our will," he said............

a good analysis (by Robert Scheer)

of the SHEER (just a coincidence here) lunacy that is the king george and his court administration. and this is just on ONE subject. arming the saudis.

Keeping Enemies Close--and Saudis Closer

Robert Scheer

Go figure: From the White House comes the news that self-styled anti-terrorism crusader George W. Bush wants to sell $20 billion in high-tech military equipment to Saudi Arabia, the source of most of the financing, and fifteen of the nineteen hijackers, for the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. ......

...........White House officials told the New York Times that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates intend to use the occasion of their joint visit to Saudi Arabia "to press the Saudis to do more to help Iraq's Shiite-dominated government." Huh? Why in the world would the Sunnis, who control Saudi Arabia and are frightened to their bones of Shiites throughout the Gulf, be party to consolidating Shiite power in Iraq?
To complete the circle of madness, White House officials tell reporters that the hope of the latest arms sale program is that the Saudis will be so thrilled with their new weapons that they will stop funding the Sunni insurgents who are currently killing Americans............

he says it all in the first paragraph

man do i love him

saving scooter vs sending our men and women into imminent danger

what do YOU think king george and his court care MORE about?

Begging His Pardon

by Bill Moyers
We have yet another remarkable revelation of the mindset of Washington's ruling clique of neoconservative elites—the people who took us to war from the safety of their Beltway bunkers. Even as Iraq grows bloodier by the day, their passion of the week is to keep one of their own from going to jail.
It is well known that I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby—once Vice President Cheney’s most trusted adviser—has been sentenced to 30 months in jail for perjury. Lying. Not a white lie, mind you. A killer lie. Scooter Libby deliberately poured poison into the drinking water of democracy by lying to federal investigators, for the purpose of obstructing justice............

why am i not surprised

the big gonzzz isn't going to be touched? same reason i'm not surprised about any OTHER of king george's nominations for positions. doctors who think being gay can be 'cured'. fema officials who have a background in horses NOT helping people, lawyers who are at the very least ... shady, people who don't think we are destroying our environment, people in charge of the lives of veterans who are getting bonus money and letting our veterans heal in squalor, people who think we used to ride on the backs of dinosaurs and on and on

yeah, the gonzzz isn't gone

Senators Block Vote on Gonzales
Republicans Thwart No-Confidence Bid

By Paul Kane washingtonpost.com Staff Writer

The Senate yesterday rejected a bid to conduct a vote of no confidence in Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, as Republicans declined to defend the embattled presidential confidant but rejected the effort as a political stunt.
On a 53 to 38 roll call, Democrats fell seven votes short of the 60 needed to invoke cloture and begin the debate on a resolution condemning Gonzales. Seven Republicans broke with the administration and refused to support the attorney general............

uh oh, wonder how long gates is going to last

seems like HE may have the semblings of a brain (and for that matter a soul)

Gates appears to break from Bush playbook on Iraq

Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates' message on Iraq has recently seemed to conflict with the White House line, writes the Los Angeles Times.
"During a recent trip to the Middle East, Gates told the Iraqi government that time was running out and praised Democratic efforts in the U.S. Congress to set a timetable for withdrawal, saying it would help prod the Iraqis. He reiterated that point during a meeting with reporters last week," report Peter Spiegel and Julian E. Barnes.
A spokesman for Gates says that the Defense Secretary shares the views on troop withdrawal held by the White House and General David Petraeus, who commands US troops in Iraq. ......
