Famed crime boss James 'Whitey' Bulger arrested in Santa Monica

Legendary Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger, who has been on the run for more than a decade, was arrested Wednesday in Santa Monica, multiple law enforcement sources told The Times.

Bulger, 81, has been the subject of several books and was the inspiration for "The Departed," a 2006 Martin Scorsese film staring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson.

Bulger fled Boston in late 1994 as federal agents were about to arrest him in connection with 21 killings, racketeering and other crimes that spanned the early 1970s to the mid-1980s.............

(Reuters) - On the run for 17 years, the accused Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger and his longtime girlfriend were finally caught in California by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday.

They were arrested without incident at a residence in Santa Monica, the FBI said in a statement, just days after the agency renewed its public campaign to capture Bulger and his 60-year-old girlfriend Catherine Greig.

The 81-year-old former fugitive has been wanted on 19 counts of murder committed in the 1970s and 1980s, drug dealing, extortion, money laundering and conspiracy. He is the older brother of William "Billy" Bulger, a former president of the Massachusetts State Senate..................

Fugitive mobster James “Whitey” Bulger was arrested Wednesday night in Santa Monica, the FBI said early this morning.
Richard DesLauriers, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston office, and Steven Martinez, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, released a statement this morning saying, “FBI agents have arrested Top 10 fugitive James “Whitey” Bulger and his companion Catherine Greig in California. Recent publicity produced a tip that led agents to a residence in Santa Monica, California, where they located Bulger and Greig Wednesday evening. “
The statement said Bulger and Greig “were arrested without incident.”
Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the US Attorney’s office for the Central District of California, said via e-mail that Bulger and Greig are expected to make an initial appearance in federal court in Los Angeles this afternoon.
The FBI office in Washington also confirmed via Twitter this morning that Bulger, 81, who had been on the run for 16 years and is charged with 19 murders, was arrested in Santa Monica with Greig, 60, who was also a fugitive................(Globe File
