hey at&t you have some 'splain'in to do!

i checked my computer speed at

broadband dot gov

(found via Americans: Test your broadband speed, help the FCC keep ISPs honest boing boing..

Doctorow
James from the New America foundation sez, "The FCC launched a consumer broadband test on their blog broadband.gov yesterday. Internet speeds in the US are often 50% to 80% lower than advertised and its vital consumers have reliable information on the actual performance of their connections. One of the two tools the FCC is using is the Network Diagnostic Tool (NDT), an open source tool hosted on MeasurementLab.net (M-Lab). The validity of NDT can be independently verified, and all data is publicly released. M-Lab hosts other test as wells, such as a test to see if bit torrent is being throttled, or how much bandwidth is available." )

the LOWEST speed at&t offers is 1.5 Mbps. here's what i got when i did the test (i'm at my pop's house right now using his at&t wi fi connection. i don't know which one he has but as i said, THE LOWEST is 1.5. 445 Kbps is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy lower than 1.5 Mbps)

ah, but here's how good ol' at&t GETS AROUND THIS: (from their terms shite): AT&T High Speed Internet Plans: SERVICE REQUIRES: DSL modem/gateway/router and qualifying local service from AT&T at time of online order. OTHER CHARGES: A shipping and handling fee applies for the customer self-install kit. Price varies depending upon shipment method. Taxes and additional fees extra. OTHER TERMS: "Up to" speed claim(s) represent maximum downstream and/or upstream speed capabilities. Many factors can affect actual speeds, which will vary and are not guaranteed. In order to enhance reliability and consistency of performance, some lines may be provisioned at less than the maximum speed capability but within the range of speed purchased. See the Terms of Service, www.att.yahoo.com/terms. Service and speed not available in all areas.

but my peeps if ENOUGH of us complain, they'll change. they have to. my pops has cable. i can threaten to change to THEIR wi fi (and follow though of course. a threat isn't any good if you can't back it up. i'm going to test the speed at someone's house who has the cable internet service to see how fast THAT is. )
