The Golden Girls television program was never much to look at. A foursome of Florida geriatrics getting agitated about pharmacy bills and shoulder pads– who could ever find such a thing interesting? But somehow these perky and absurd women wormed their ways into America’s homes for an 8-year run in the 1980s. Maybe it was our desire to see our grandmothers having fun that encouraged us to watch. Maybe we wanted to believe old age wasn’t dominated by infections and hip problems, loneliness and crushing depression before death finally stomps us out like the acrid end of a damp cigarette.

The most unexpected segment of this show’s fanbase was America’s young men. In the 80s, these were boys too delicate for sports, too awkward for girls, too “artistic” for labor-intensive work and too flamboyant for peer acceptance in high school. With no real adults in sight, these poor children became obsessed with the poorly conceived characters on this show. Desperate for a firm hand in their lives, they gravitated to the subversive undercurrent of masculinity in these aged matrons...........

Krugman Hits Ailes for Fox's 'Deliberate Misinformation' on Health Care Bill

Why ABC News thought bringing in the CEO of a rival network as a pundit was a good idea is beyond me but one of the bright spots was getting to watch Paul Krugman call out Ailes to his face. Krugman hits Ailes for Fox's 'deliberate misinformation' on the health care bill and doing their part to make sure that the general public does not know what is in it.

WILL: So I don't think that when a man gets up and gives a speech full of cognitive dissonance, saying Washington is corrupt, Washington is annoying (ph), Washington is tiresome, Washington is dysfunctional, and Washington should have a much bigger role in American life, I think that -- that breeds, you might say, a kind of distrust and cynicism.............

does anyone understand his reasoning?

what does/do equal rights have to do with wars and security threats (real or imagined that is)? well it may have LOTS to do with both as it turns out. if 'the gays' were treated as equal citizens with equal rights (as EVERYONE not only should be but MUST be) there would be more people in our military.

does boehner think because someone is gay they 1) don't love their country and/or 2) cannot defend their country?

The Congress shouldn't even consider policy changes offering equality for homosexuals while the country is facing a recession and two wars, according to the House Minority Leader.

NBC's David Gregory asked Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) to comment about President Barack Obama's call to end the military's controversial policy known as "Don't ask, don't tell." Rep. Boehner believes now is the wrong time.

"In the middle of two wars and in the middle of this giant security threat, why would we want to get into this debate?" Boehner asked, rhetorically.

"At a time when Americans are asking 'where are the jobs,' why do we want to get in this debate?" he continued.

He added, "While we're fighting over health care and trying to find some way to come to some common ground, why do we want to get into a divisive debate that will do nothing more than distract the real debate that should occur here about helping to get our economy going again and getting American people back to work?".............

Weigh Less, Pay Less: Whole Foods Offers Discount Based On BMI

Several readers have alerted us to a new program whereby Whole Foods will offer steeper employee discounts to people with lower BMIs. Exactly how little they have to weigh to pay only $37 per organic oyster mushroom, after the jump.

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey explains the program in a letter, reproduced below. Apparently it's part of an initiative to reduce health care costs, which is interesting since Mackey is against the health care reforms that would actually reduce costs for all people.............

Baboomska mcGeesk sez, "In 1956, Buddy Holly traveled to Nashville to record several songs. One of the songs he recorded was "That'll Be The Day", but the producer assigned to his sessions (Owen Bradley) hated rock n' roll, and did a terrible job on the song. After that, Buddy traveled to New Mexico and re-recorded "That'll Be The Day" (the version that became the monster hit) at a different studio with his own (superior) arrangement, but according to his contract with Decca, he couldn't release it, because Decca owned all rights to his music. He decided to call Decca, to try reason with them, and he secretly taped his conversation. They refused to give him the rights to his own song, but he went ahead and violated his contract. Here is the conversation he secretly taped."
