The amount of trade in the US, they said, was ten times higher than the next-highest countries, China and the UK. Nearly 75 percent of trades were in elephant ivory; another 20 percent were exotic birds. Primates, cats, and other animals made up the difference.............

There’s no way around it.
Yes, you can parse words, but when Sarah Palin can’t call anti-abortionist killers domestic terrorists, you have a vice-presidential candidate who – along with her support for the secessionist and neo-Confederate Alaskan Independence Party – is indeed a true supporter of domestic terrorism and anti-American activities.
Murderers of medical personnel and clinic staffs who provide abortion have websites, as you know, with lists of names of people – primarily doctors – to be shot. When Brian Williams of NBC asked Palin if such murderers were domestic terrorists she danced around the question by first, yet again, bringing up Bill Ayers and then – while she had time to think about how to code her support of the anti-abortion killers – deny that they were terrorists.
This is perhaps the most underreported (except for some Internet sites), shocking, and threatening to U.S. security exchange of the election (along with the widely overlooked and documented strong relationship between the Alaskan Independence Party anti-U.S. secessionists and the Palins).

Palin begins her answer with an exasperated sigh, recites her Ayers talking points for the 1000th time, and then finally returns to the question by using coded words that are well known to violent anti-abortion extremists. She "sort of, maybe" finds the killing of "innocents" not right, but she says firmly "I don’t know if you are going to use the word terrorist there." And, be reminded, that to the criminal anti-abortion fringe, doctors and nurses who perform abortions are not "innocent Americans"; they are murderers to the likes of Sarah Palin..............

Police: McCain volunteer made up robbery story
By JOE MANDAKPITTSBURGH (AP) — A McCain campaign volunteer made up a story of being robbed, pinned to the ground and having the letter "B" scratched on her face in what she had said was a politically inspired attack, police said Friday.
Ashley Todd, 20-year-old college student from College Station, Texas, admitted Friday that the story was false, said Maurita Bryant, the assistant chief of the police department's investigations division. Todd was charged with making a false report to police, and Bryant said police doubted her story from the start.
Dressed in an orange hooded sweat shirt, Todd left police headquarters in handcuffs late Friday and did not respond to questions from reporters. The mark on her face was faded and her left eye was slightly blackened when she arrived in district court.
Todd was awaiting arraignment Friday on the misdemeanor false-report charge, which is punishable by up to two years in prison. She will be housed in a mental health unit at the county jail for her safety and because of "her not insignificant mental health issues," prosecutor Mark Tranquilli said.
Todd initially told investigators she was attempting to use a bank branch ATM on Wednesday night when a 6-foot-4 black man approached her from behind, put a knife blade to her throat and demanded money. She told police she handed the assailant $60 and walked away....

FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) -- A Republican county election clerk distributed copies of an apparent chain letter referring to Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama as a "young, black Adolf Hitler" to two employees but later told police she intended it to be a joke.
The employees, who had voted for Obama in Indiana's Democratic primary, discovered the letters at their desks after returning from Labor Day weekend, Deputy Sheriff Doug Cox said in a police report made public this week. One of the workers complained, and surveillance video showed Johnson County Clerk Jill Jackson placing an item one worker's desk at 5:27 p.m. on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, Cox said.
"She admitted to being responsible for the letter, but only did it as a joke," Cox said. Jackson told police she had intended to speak with the workers upon returning to work but forgot.
Jackson could not be reached for comment Thursday. She told the Daily Journal in Franklin, which first reported the letter's contents, that the issue was a personnel matter.
Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner said Jackson did not violate any laws. One of the employees also filed a complaint with County Coordinator Kathleen Hash, who said Thursday she didn't know the status or disposition of the complaint.
Officials from both parties called the incident unsettling..........

Leading the way in the District were the Army, Navy and Air Force, whose employees ignored 158 tickets for $28,000 in 2007. Most were racked up by recruiters working at the Armed Forces Recruiting Center near 13th and L streets NW........

A plumbing license is not the only license "Joe the Plumber" is having troubles with. The former Mesa resident has a suspended driver's license and outstanding court fines in Arizona, according to Mesa Municipal Court records.
"Joe," whose real name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, was referred to more than 20 times by Republican Sen. John McCain in Wednesday night's presidential debate for questioning Democratic Sen. Barack Obama's tax policy.
The man portrayed by McCain to be the typical, hardworking American revealed this week that he actually does not have a plumbing license, and now court records show he should not have a driver's license either, making it potentially even harder for him to get to work.
Wurzelbacher, who lived in Mesa in 2000 and had an Arizona driver's license, had his driver's license suspended by the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division on May 4, 2000, following a nonpayment of a court-imposed fine for civil traffic violations, according to court records.
America's new political icon, who owes nearly $1,200 in back taxes, according to public records, still owes more than $700 to the Mesa court system.
Records show he was cited for failure to stop at a red light and for failure to provide proof of insurance on Feb. 9, 2000, in a black Dodge truck at the intersection of Dobson and Baseline roads in Mesa........

Shortly after Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) chose Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) as his running mate, Palin said she is not one to attribute global warming to being man-made. Since then, she has walked that statement back slightly, saying that indeed, man’s activities have contributed to climate change but adding the caveat that “weather patterns are cyclical.”
When asked to name some specific man-made causes of global warming yesterday during an interview with a local NBC affiliate in Las Vegas, Palin couldn’t name one, and instead reverted back to her new talking point that it doesn’t really matter:................

How do you sell someone as a no-frills hockey mom who sold the state plane and fired the official cook and hunted her own moose meat, and then try to explain wardrobing her in clothes from Neiman Marcus -- a store occasionally referred to by aggrieved, frugal shoppers as Needless Markup? How do you, in barely two months, lavish her with fashion swag worthy of a starlet and valued at more than her annual governor's salary of $125,000?
This is not careless image management.
This is ill-advised and ill-informed.

The charges included costs for hotel and commercial flights for three daughters to join Palin to watch their father in a snowmobile race, and a trip to New York, where the governor attended a five-hour conference and stayed with 17-year-old Bristol for five days and four nights in a luxury hotel.
In all, Palin has charged the state $21,012 for her three daughters' 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights since she took office in December 2006. In some other cases, she has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.
Alaska law does not specifically address expenses for a governor's children. The law allows for payment of expenses for anyone conducting official state business.

Maintenance workers reported about 7:45 a.m. finding a 75-pound bear cub dumped at the roundabout near the Catamount statute at the entrance to campus, said Tom Johnson, chief of university police.
“It looked like it had been shot in the head as best we can tell. A couple of Obama campaign signs had been stapled together and stuck over its head,” Johnson said.
University police called in N.C. Wildlife Resources officials to remove the body and help in the investigation. Bear season is currently under way in Western North Carolina......

Photographer Joe Eddins and I headed over to the closest one and found a steady line of voters hoping to cast ballots early. Most seemed to be Obama supporters and several had come from the rally. Nearly all the voters were black.
Also at the polling site was a group of loud and angry protesters who shouted and mocked the voters as they walked in. Nearly all were white.
As you can see from these videos, no one held anything back. People were shouting about Obama's acknowledged cocaine use as a young man, abortion and one man used the word "terrorist." They also were complaining that Sundays are for church, not voting...........

yesterday on my way home from work
i was listening to npr (as i normally do. only that or college stations. NEVER 'regular radio'). it was the tail end of a political show. some republicans were on. what was unusual was they were saying they were going to vote for barack obama. i also heard a few callers say the same thing as well. the callers were disenfranchised with the way mccain's/sarevil's campaigns were going. the callers said they were sick of the negativity. they wanted mccain to talk more about the issues than what was wrong with the 'man' barack obama. they had no problems with mccain tearing obama's POLICIES apart, just NOT the man. i was quite heartened to hear them all.

Appeals Court Halts Release of 17 Guantanamo Detainees
Washington Post Staff WriterA federal appeals court Monday blocked the release of 17 Chinese Muslims into the United States from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, until it can hear further legal arguments in the case.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit stayed a federal judge's order releasing the men, and it ordered oral arguments in the government's appeal, to be heard Nov. 24.
U.S. District Judge Ricardo M. Urbina ordered the government Oct. 7 to release the men, all Uighurs, who have been held at Guantanamo Bay for nearly seven years. The same panel temporarily stayed Urbina's order a day later.
The government has been trying to find new homes for the Uighurs for years. It no longer considers them enemy combatants and provided no evidence in court that they posed a security risk. The men cannot be returned to their homeland because they face the prospect of being tortured and killed. China considers the men terrorists.......

Until last night, when McCain was finally asked, point-blank, about his relationship to Liddy and the similarities between that relationship and the Obama-Ayers relationship he has attacked so harshly.
Who finally asked the question? The New York Times? The Washington Post? CNN's "best political team on television"?

David Letterman asked McCain about Liddy, putting the nation's journalists to shame in the process.
For years, political professionals, academics, and media watchdogs have lamented the fact that some Americans get their news from late-night comedians and other entertainment. As it turns out, that might be a good thing.
Unfortunately, after Letterman broke the media's embargo on questioning McCain's relationship with Liddy, reporters quickly pretended it never happened -- or, if they did mention it, downplayed the significance of the relationship. Time's Mark Halperin described Letterman "hound[ing]" McCain over his Ayers attacks, adding, "The late-night host doesn't let up on where the former Weather Underground leader fits into the campaign." But, inexplicably, Halperin didn't so much as mention that Letterman confronted McCain about his relationship with Liddy. Several news reports that did mention the Liddy exchange described him as a Watergate felon -- omitting Liddy's much more recent statements about shooting law enforcement personnel...............

``For this meeting to be a success, we must welcome good ideas from around the world,'' Bush said as he welcomed French President Nicolas Sarkozy and European Commission President Jose Barroso to Camp David, the presidential retreat in rural Maryland, for dinner and three hours of talks.
The conference agenda will include ideas on how to prevent future crises in a way that preserves the free-market system, Bush said. ``It is essential we preserve the foundations of democratic capitalism,'' he said. He said leaders from both developed and developing nations would be included.
Sarkozy and Barroso, in separate statements, welcomed Bush's invitation.
``We want to work hand in hand with the Americans to create the capitalism of the 21st century,'' Sarkozy said. ``The meeting should be held rapidly, perhaps before the end of November. Since the crisis started in New York, maybe we can find the solution in New York.''.....

Abortion ban returns to ballot in South Dakota
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Two years after South Dakotans rejected a nearly total ban on abortion, voters on Nov. 4 will decide another sweeping but less restrictive ballot measure that would probably send a legal challenge of Roe v. Wade to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The initiative would outlaw abortions but includes exceptions for rape, incest and pregnancies that threaten the life or health of the woman. Some voters said they wanted those exceptions when they rejected the tougher 2006 measure 56 percent to 44 percent.
Opponents say the new measure would jeopardize the patient-doctor relationship because physicians could be criminally charged for exceeding its bounds. They also argue that its exceptions are too narrowly defined and that it would force some women to carry an unhealthy fetus.
Leslee Unruh, the executive director of VoteYesForLife.com and the measure's main proponent, said it's legally sound.
Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, said the initiative could threaten legalized abortion in every state, especially if it goes before a 2011 or 2012 Supreme Court that would probably tilt to the right if Sen. John McCain becomes president.......

A Kansas City grandmother is suing John McCain and Sarah Palin for promoting hate speech. Mary Kay Green told KSHB that some statements at McCain campaign rallies terrify her as much as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
"I know the secret service is on this case, but John McCain and Sarah Palin can stop some of this by a statement that they abhor these death threats and will not tolerate them," said Green.
The 66-year-old civil attorney, a lifelong Democrat, claims in the suit that the McCain campaign has intentionally and recklessly portrayed Barack Obama as a terrorist.
Green said, "You have to take these things seriously.".......

Grandmother sues McCain for hate speech

A Kansas City grandmother is suing John McCain and Sarah Palin for promoting hate speech. Mary Kay Green told KSHB that some statements at McCain campaign rallies terrify her as much as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
"I know the secret service is on this case, but John McCain and Sarah Palin can stop some of this by a statement that they abhor these death threats and will not tolerate them," said Green.
The 66-year-old civil attorney, a lifelong Democrat, claims in the suit that the McCain campaign has intentionally and recklessly portrayed Barack Obama as a terrorist.
Green said, "You have to take these things seriously.".......

Gun shop stages 'Pre-Osama bin Biden' sale

A New Mexico gun shop owner says that he is "proud to offend" supporters of Barack Obama with its sign outside the store which reads "Pre-Osama bin Biden sale! Today, 7 PM - MIDNITE."
And even while the sale is over, the sign remains.
"If this sign offended people, I am damn proud of it," said shop owner Cope Reynolds in an interview with The Daily Times. Reynolds explained that "a lot of it is because of his Muslim upbringing."
"His name is Osama, er ..." began a store patron during an interview. "I mean, Barack Hasam Obama."
"It's actually Hussein Obama," said the cameraman.
"Hussein Obama," continued the patron. "That is a Muslim name."
