watch it

way way way back when i was coming up (meaning when i was a teenager and a youngER woman), planned parenthood saved many a friend's life (in one way or another). to this day, it is saving my friends lives. friends who work but don't have health insurance, friends who are in school and not under their parent's plans. planned parenthood is a health care provider for women. plain and simple. you defund it, you kill women. that's it. nothing more to say

Scandal in Fitzwalkerstan: Federal probe, full recount required in high court race
 Cap Times editorial madison.com
..................
Wisconsinites should respond with equal skepticism to the news that Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus, a former Republican legislative staffer who worked for Prosser when he served as Assembly speaker and with Gov. Scott Walker when he was a GOP rising star, has found all the votes that justice needs to secure his re-election and that the governor needs to claim a “win” for his agenda.
There is no need for a conspiracy theory. The facts raise the questions that election observers are now asking.
The clerk, who has a history of secretive and erratic handling of election results, says she forgot to count the votes of Brookfield, the county’s second-largest city, in the total for Tuesday’s Supreme Court election.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Waukesha County clerk has drawn criticisms in the past
DEE J. HALL | dhall@madison.com
..................
In 2006, Nickolaus, who was elected Waukesha County clerk in 2002, was criticized for posting election returns that temporarily skewed results of a Republican primary for the 97th Assembly District. At the time, Nickolaus told reporters some returns from the city of Waukesha were entered in the wrong column.
And last summer, the Waukesha County Board ordered an internal audit of her office, citing concerns Nickolaus was secretive and refusing to cooperate with the county's technical staff in a security review of the computerized election system.
Some officials also were critical of Nickolaus' decision to stop posting municipal results to save time. Auditors who looked at the Waukesha County system found 26 of 62 counties surveyed also did not post local results — a step that might have revealed the missing Brookfield numbers..................

Kathy Nickolaus in Waukesha forgot to save? Really?

by ColdFusion04

It was with great interest that I watched the press conference of Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus.  You see, my "day job" is in the field of information technology, and I was tuned in to her every word regarding her use of Microsoft Access to tabulate the county wide vote totals.
So I decided to make a little voting database in Microsoft Access 2010 and 2007, to test her story.
Results.......................

.........
Nickolaus says repeatedly that she imported the data into Access, but through a process of "human error", she "forgot to save".  Then come the tears, repeatedly, throughout her presser.
Here's the problem.  Microsoft Access (any version) doesn't ask you to save. When you enter data into a table, it automatically updates the underlying database.  If you close the database accidentally, the data you entered (or imported, in the case of Nickolaus) remains.  If you stop to take a phone call from your buddy the governor (for example), your data will still automatically save.
For further proof, I asked my 8 year old daughter to try to enter data in my little Access voting system mock up, and not save it.  She couldn't do it.  She tried all sorts of things, and the votes still saved....................

27-year-old with slim résumé resigns from state government

Brian Deschane is gone from state government, but he won't soon be forgotten.
Deschane, the 27-year-old son of a prominent supporter of Gov. Scott Walker, resigned from his state job following public criticism over his appointment to an $81,500-per-year job in the Walker administration. He informed officials at the state Department of Commerce, where he had been named administrator of environmental and regulatory matters in February.
"He has resigned," said agency spokesman Tony Hozeny.
Hozeny said he didn't believe Deschane gave a reason for leaving the government job...............

New Hampshire politician now charged with rape got elected despite violent past
By Sady Doyle
Jeffrey Gray is an elected member of the Salem, New Hampshire Planning Board charged with kidnapping a woman, keeping her in his house in Windham, NH for three days, and sexually assaulting her. But this isn't the first time Gray has been accused of terrorizing women -- in fact, his history of violence against women goes back a startling 13 years.
He allegedly met his latest victim after she responded to roommate want-ad that he posted on Craigslist. Many of the trial details are sealed to protect the identity of his victim, though news reports indicate that he held her against her will and raped her over the course of several days before he drove her to Boston's Logan Airport and she was able to contact authorities...........

Why There's No Such Thing as Humane Meat
By Sunaura Taylor

I recently debated Nicolette Hahn Niman at an art event in California. Niman is a cattle rancher and author of Righteous Porkchop. I am a 28-year-old disabled artist, writer, and vegan. The event was held in a largely inaccessible building in front of an audience that had just dined on grass-fed beef—a rather ironic scenario for a wheelchair-using animal advocate like me!
My perspective as a disabled person and as a disability scholar profoundly influences my views on animals. The field of disability studies raises questions that are equally valid in the animal-rights discussion. What is the best way to protect the rights of those who are not physically autonomous but are vulnerable and interdependent? How can society protect the rights of those who cannot protect their own, or those who can’t understand the concept of a right?..................

Ex-Congressman in Libya to ‘Help’ Once Proposed Arming Gadhafi

By Noah Shachtman

Former Congressman Curt Weldon traveled repeatedly to Libya during the last decade, becoming so close with the Gadhafi regime that the firm Weldon worked for even floated the idea of selling arms to Tripoli.
So now that Gadhafi is under assault from NATO airstrikes and rebel ground troops, it should come as no surprise that Weldon is back in Libya, “to try to help negotiate a political settlement with Gadhafi and family,” according to CNN.
And while Weldon’s there, the controversial former vice chair of the House Armed Services Committee is looking to do a little image repolishing for himself.
It wasn’t long ago — April, 2008, to be exact — that Weldon was boasting in a report that he had become the “1st non-Libyan Board Member of the Ghadaffi Foundation.”...................

Weldon: I'm not in Libya to undermine Obama
Posted by Ben Plesser
Former congressman Curt Weldon is expected to meet with Muammar Qaddafi in Libya sometime this week, and says he plans to ask the embattled leader to step aside.
Weldon was part of a congressional delegation to Libya in 2004 and has visited the country several times. His current visit is a private mission at the invitation of the Qaddafi government, but with the knowledge of the White House and members of congress, Weldon told CBS News producer Ben Plesser and a reporter from the Wall Street Journal.
Sitting in the lobby of his hotel in Tripoli Wednesday, the former congressman seemed aware of the fact that his visit to Libya, and his meeting with Muammar Qaddafi would draw criticism back home..............

Who Is Curt Weldon and Why Is He Meeting Gadhafi Again Today? - Lisa Flam

Former U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon has met with Moammar Gadhafi several times before, and he'll meet face-to-face with the Libyan leader again.

Weldon, a Republican from Pennsylvania, met today with Gadhafi's chief of staff in Tripoli and is scheduled to talk to the leader himself later today, New York's WPIX-TV reported from Libya.

Writing in today's New York Times, Weldon said he's leading a private delegation to Libya and is hoping to persuade Gadhafi to "step aside."

"First, we must engage face-to-face with Colonel [Gadhafi] and persuade him to leave, as my delegation hopes to do," Weldon wrote. "I've met him enough times to know that it will be very hard to simply bomb him into submission............

Glenn Beck suggests Soros connected with Japan disaster, NZ earthquake, Ivory Coast civil war, Hamas, a union mtg, and the shooting of a poet's son in Mexico

Actually, my title doesn't do this justice. He's claiming that all the issues are related to each other - they're not "isolated incidents."

The guy is nuts, or the biggest con man out there nowadays.  You have to wonder whether his apocalyptic meanderings are part of the reason Fox isn't renewing his contract.  Did Fox worry that some nutjob, convinced the world was going to end, might eventually do something crazy?  Beck already has the inspiration of one violent nutjob, at least, under his belt, according to Media Matters..................

Sarah Palin Took a Government Handout and Bristol Palin Raked It In

Did you know that Sarah Palin's TV reality show, "Sarah Palin's Alaska,"was government subsidized?" Yup, Palin's reality show took advantage of state tax credits that Palin herself created as Governor in 2008.

Palin's reality show received a $1.2 million subsidy from the state. Under a state subsidy created by the Legislature in 2008 and signed into law by Palin, Alaska allows film and TV producers to recover 30 percent or more of the money they spend on filming in the state............

The Assize of Nuisance

Alice Wade, who lived in 14th Century London, could not countenance the smell of her own poo.

In an era when many of her fellow citizens relieved themselves in chamber pots and surreptitiously tipped the stinking contents out the window, she had a toilet in its own small room.
But 700 years ago, a toilet was a hole cut in a wooden platform over a cesspool. The smells that emanated were most foul.
So she rigged up a wooden pipe that connected her toilet to a rainwater gutter that flushed a nearby public latrine.....................

what's wrong with this picture?

By PZ Myers | Sourced from Pharyngula

Wait—Liberty University gets half a billion dollars a year in federal aid? And they have almost 50,000 students? I feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if thousands of minds suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.
I looked a little further and discovered, though, that Liberty is actually a mid-sized private college with an on-campus enrollment of about 12,000 — they're sucking in all that money because they're deeply involved in that lucrative on-line 'education' game, where they shuffle students through a series of web pages and declare them S-M-R-T, smart. I was made suspicious when I looked at their list of faculty in chemistry and biology and was surprised to see that their total number of chemistry/biology faculty is 21, while my university has a total combined chemistry and biology faculty of 15…for a student body of fewer than 2,000........................

Alleged rape victim in Libya tells mother of ordeal, threat
(CNN) -- Eman al-Obeidy, the woman who claims forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi raped her, spoke Tuesday with her mother, who has come to her defense, for the first time since her ordeal began.
Al-Obeidy told Aisha Ahmad that a court employee pulled a weapon on her when she went to a courthouse.
Al-Obeidy, who burst into a Tripoli hotel last month to tell her harrowing story to journalists, told CNN's Anderson Cooper in an emotional phone interview that the administrative court employee threatened her life.............

Alleged Libyan Rape Victim Eman al-Obeidy On CNN: ‘I Refused To Be Silent’
by Mark Joyella

In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Eman al-Obeidy, the woman whose story of brutal sexual assault at the hands of Muammar Gaddafi’s soldiers, said she was told she would be forced to retract her accusations on Libyan state TV. She said she was told to change her story, saying it wasn’t Libyan soldiers who abducted and raped her, but members of the revolution. She would not cooperate. “I refused to be silent,” she said.

Asked how she was treated in captivity, al-Obeidy said “they cursed at me, and told me I was a traitor, because I spoke the truth.”..........

Fringe conservative: Welfare makes African Americans ‘rut like rabbits’
By Eric W. Dolan
The United States should abandon all welfare programs because they have led to the destruction of marriage and harm black children, according to the Director of Issue Analysis for Government and Public Policy at the American Family Association (AFA).
"We have spent over $16 trillion fighting the war on poverty, and it’s time to run up the white flag of surrender," Bryan Fischer said in blog post on the AFA's website. "Poverty has won."
Fischer added that welfare had destroyed the African-American family by providing incentives for fornication instead of marriage. "It’s no wonder we are now awash in the disastrous social consequences of people who rut like rabbits," he wrote...................

Florida Bill Will Force Women to Look at Their [Redacted]

By Kate Sheppard

Florida lawmakers apparently aren't allowed to say the word "uterus" on the House floor. But next week those same lawmakers will be considering legislation that will force Florida women to look at their you-know-whats before they can obtain an abortion.
The bill in question, HB 1127, would make Florida women seeking abortions subject to both an ultrasound and a doctor's detailed description of what's in there.  I'm guessing the doctor might even be forced to—gasp!—use the word "uterus" as he or she performs the ultrasound.
"How do you ban the word 'uterus' at the same time you're debating a bill that would force women to look at a picture of their uterus?" asks Stephanie Kunkel, executive director of the Florida Association of Planned Parenthood Affiliates..............

After Maine’s governor removes labor mural, feds demand their money back

By Stephen C. Webster
Whoops: The governor of Maine's decision to remove a pro-labor mural from the state's Department of Labor may cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, all because he wanted to "send a message."
Apparently unknown to Maine's recently elected Republican governor, the mural targeted by his ire was initially paid for by a federal grant -- the terms of which he violated by having it removed.
And now, according to the Associated Press, the U.S. Department of Labor has officially demanded reimbursement.
The grant, awarded in 2008 to pay for the 37-foot-long mural, fulfilled 63 percent of the $60,000 historical art project...............
