A Greek Bishop’s Anti-Semitic Tirade
By ROBERT MACKEY

Updated | 7:19 p.m. Leaders of Greece’s small Jewish community objected on Wednesday to televised remarks by a Greek Orthodox bishop who blamed the country’s financial problems on a conspiracy of Jewish bankers and claimed that the Holocaust was orchestrated by Zionists.
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece complained to church authorities about the anti-Semitic remarks made by the Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus during an interview on Greek television on Monday, according to a statement (in Greek) on the group’s Web site.*..................

Angry Haitian mobs lynch 45 ‘witches’ over cholera outbreak
By Agence France-Presse

PORT-AU-PRINCE — Angry Haitian mobs have lynched at least 45 people in recent weeks, accusing them of spreading a cholera outbreak that has killed over 2,500 people across the country, officials said Wednesday.
The number included at least 14 suspected sorcerers previously known to have been lynched in the far southwestern region of Grand'Anse as local people feared they were spreading cholera with a magical substance. The area has been largely spared by the outbreak................

House GOP Crushes Bill That Would Protect Against Child Marriage

On Thursday night, hours before passing the tax cut compromise, House Republicans thwarted a bill that aimed to protect girls around the world from being coerced into child marriage. They opposed it because, they claimed, it might fund abortions.
The bill's sponsor, Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN), was blindsided. After the Child Marriage Protection Act passed the Senate with zero objection on Dec. 1 -- a rare feat these days -- it didn't seem like there was much to worry about.
But just before the vote began, Republican leadership blasted out a "whip alert" to GOP staffers with a message: Vote no. The alert claimed the bill cost too much and that a competing bill, introduced just the day before, would be better..............

blessed be to you all on this winter solstice

Caned woman dies, cleric arrested

A Muslim cleric has been arrested in northwest Bangladesh following the death of a woman who was publicly caned as punishment by an Islamic court for an extra-martial affair.
Local police chief Azizul Haq Sarker said Sufia Begum, 50, was accused of having an affair with her stepson and sentenced by a religious court in her village in Rajshahi district.
He said: “Village elders tied 10 canes together and beat her legs.”
The woman who carried out the beating for the elders has also been arrested.
Begum was whipped 40 times on November 12..................

Part Goofy, Part Glorious, All Man
By GIA KOURLAS
The first thing you should know about Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo’s current engagement at the Joyce Theater is that there isn’t a nutcracker in sight. The second is that a stage filled with snow isn’t all there is to the notion of seasonal festiveness.  This superb male group, known as the Trocks, appeared in all of its mallerina glory — that is, man plus ballerina — on Friday in a program of repertory works that included “Les Lac des Cygnes” (“Swan Lake,” Act II), as well as the New York premieres, both staged by Elena Kunikova, of the pas d’action from “Harlequinade” (1997) and “Valpurgeyeva Noch” (or “Walpurgisnacht”) from 2009............

Rare lunar eclipse to start early Tuesday morning

ARI ALTSTEDTER

A blood red moon awaits those determined to stay awake for the total lunar eclipse that starts at 1:33 (ET) Tuesday morning. It's the first one to fall on the winter solstice in more than 300 years, according to NASA.
Lunar eclipses happen about two times a year, but this one is unusual. Dec. 21 is the winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year. An eclipse hasn't fallen on the date since 1638, and will not happen again until 2094..,

Solstice Lunar Eclipse

Dec. 17, 2010:  Everyone knows that "the moon on the breast of new-fallen snow gives the luster of mid-day to objects below."
That is, except during a lunar eclipse.
The luster will be a bit "off" on Dec. 21st, the first day of northern winter, when the full Moon passes almost dead-center through Earth's shadow. For 72 minutes of eerie totality, an amber light will play across the snows of North America, throwing landscapes into an unusual state of ruddy shadow..............

we are ALL equal. we all MUST have the SAME rights. not MORE rights, THE SAME RIGHTS. that is ALL ANYONE WANTS. there is NO agenda. there is NO master plan. we all must have the SAME rights.

thank you to those who voted for the civil rights of all of our military members. thank you to those who have served in the past and are serving now and will serve in the future (gay, straight, to the left or the right or anything in between. JUST THANKS is all)

'Don't ask, don't tell' is repealed by Senate; bill awaits Obama's signing
Washington Post Staff Writer

The U.S. military will for the first time in history allow gays to serve openly after the Senate voted Saturday to repeal "don't ask, don't tell," the policy that has required such troops to hide their sexual identity or risk being expelled from the services.
While opponents said repeal would create a battlefield distraction that could endanger troops, supporters drew parallels to the military's decision to end racial segregation in the 1950s and the admission of women to military service academies in the 1970s.
"This is the defining civil rights initiative of this decade," said Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. "Congress has taken an extraordinary step on behalf of men and women who've been denied their rightful integrity for too long."....................

DADT passes Senate, bill on way to President for signature. Historic civil rights victory.

UPDATE: 3:30PM 65-31 DADT bill passes the Senate. Next stop, Obama for signature. Then the hard work begins... read below. GOPers Burr (R-NC) and Ensign (R-NV) voted with us as well, after first voting to kill the bill by filibuster.

Please join us in thanking all the troops and vets who got us here.

UPDATE: The final Senate vote on DADT is expected at 3pm Eastern. We should easily win that. Then the bill goes straight to the White House for the President's signature, from what I understand.

And here's the vote count. We got all the Ds, exception Manchin, who chickened out and didn't vote at all (history repeats itself and West Virginia takes a proud stand against the major civil rights bill of the day, again). And we got the following Rs: Snowe; Collins; Murkowski; Voinovich; Brown; Kirk...............

it's that time of the year again...........................
