U.S. Speeds Up Bomb Delivery for the Israelis
By DAVID S. CLOUD and HELENE COOPER
WASHINGTON, July 21 — The Bush administration is rushing a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel, which requested the expedited shipment last week after beginning its air campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, American officials said Friday.
The decision to quickly ship the weapons to Israel was made with relatively little debate within the Bush administration, the officials said. Its disclosure threatens to anger Arab governments and others because of the appearance that the United States is actively aiding the Israeli bombing campaign in a way that could be compared to Iran’s efforts to arm and resupply Hezbollah.
The munitions that the United States is sending to Israel are part of a multimillion-dollar arms sale package approved last year that Israel is able to draw on as needed, the officials said. But Israel’s request for expedited delivery of the satellite and laser-guided bombs was described as unusual by some military officers, and as an indication that Israel still had a long list of targets in Lebanon to strike.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Friday that she would head to Israel on Sunday at the beginning of a round of Middle Eastern diplomacy. The original plan was to include a stop to Cairo in her travels, but she did not announce any stops in Arab capitals. ............

Mother, 3 children slaughtered in Basra
Family had fled threats over cooperation with U.S.; violence rends Baghdad
The Associated Press
Updated: 8:58 p.m. ET July 19, 2006
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Assailants slit the throats of a mother and her three children in southern Iraq, where the family had fled to escape threats that they had cooperated with the Americans.
The mother's sister was also slain in the savage attack, which occurred Wednesday in an apartment in the southern city of Basra, police said. Five other family members were rescued before they bled to death.
Officials said the family had fled Baghdad for Basra after receiving threats because they had cooperated with U.S. forces. The officials gave no further details and spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared reprisals by sectarian militias that have infiltrated Basra's police.
Sunni leaders, meanwhile, said 20 Sunnis who work for a government organization that maintains mosques and shrines of that Muslim sect were abducted in two areas of Baghdad. Sunni officials demanded the Shiite-led security forces do more to stop sectarian kidnappings and killings.....

BRING OUR WOMEN AND MEN HOME NOW

excuse me?

did i just read THIS correctly:

.......White House spokesman Tony Snow said Bush would issue a veto because "it's inappropriate for the federal government to finance something that many people consider murder."......

Senate defies veto threat, sends stem cell bill to BushUpdated 7/19/2006 10:15 AM ET
By Andrea Stone, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — The Senate voted Tuesday to expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, flouting President Bush's promised first veto and highlighting an emotional issue for this fall's elections.
The 63-37 vote fell four short of the two-thirds needed to override a veto, which Bush could issue today. He has gone longer without issuing a veto than any president since Thomas Jefferson in 1801-09.

The legislative action caps years of debate over science and ethics. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and some religious conservatives link the research to abortion. Former first lady Nancy Reagan and doctors say it could lead to cures for Parkinson's and other diseases.
The issue has divided Republicans: 19 senators broke with Bush to support the bill, and 50 lawmakers did so when the House voted 238-194 in May 2005. In a Gallup Poll in May, 61% called embryonic stem cell research morally acceptable.....

what a horrible tragedy

my heart goes out to the family and friends of jason cooper, iraq vet. i've never been in a war (or the armed forces for that matter). i cannot imagine what it's like to not only watch people with guns (and other things) fighting each other BUT to have to fear for your own life every second. how CAN one be sane when one returns home from a place such as iraq?

Mother of Suicide Vet Flies Old Glory Upside Down
By Matthew Rothschild, The ProgressivePosted on July 18, 2006, Printed on July 19, 2006http://www.alternet.org/story/39159/
Terri Jones lost her son Jason Cooper just over a year ago.
He was an Army Reservist in the Iraq War.
On July 14, 2005, four months after returning home to Iowa, he hanged himself.
He was 23.
Since then, Jones has been flying her American flag upside down, though someone came on her property once and turned it right side up, and another person stole it.
“We had a flag out the whole time Jason was in Iraq,” she says. “Once he died, my boyfriend Vince turned it upside down to protest everything that’s happening with our government, especially our soldiers being failed when they come home.”
Jones says Jason wasn’t the same when he got back from Iraq.
“He was a really upbeat, happy, funny kid” before he left, she says. “You could tell his smile was gone when he came home.”
He also had a hard time paying attention.
“We did notice right away that he’d space off while you were trying to talk to him,” she says. “His thoughts were floating off somewhere else.”
And the reaction of some of his friends caught him by surprise.
“He was excited to see them,” she says, “and he thought they would be, ‘Hey, Coop, good to see you.’ But instead, the first thing that would come out was, ‘Jas, you shoot anybody?’ He was so taken aback he didn’t know how to answer. He’d just say, ‘I don’t want to talk about it.’ ”
Jones tells me her son was hit by enemy fire. “His flack jacket took 37 pieces of shrapnel,” she says. “He didn’t even get a bruise.”
Jones also told Jennifer Jacobs of the Des Moines Register of one haunting memory he had about an insurgent who executed an Iraqi child in full view of Cooper and other members of his unit.
Jason was having a lot of nightmares and flashbacks, his mother says. “His girlfriend said he’d wake up in night sweats, and she had to take him out for a walk at three in the morning.”..............

a hostility?

a hostility is me being mad at my neighbor and saying so, for mowing the lawn at 11:00 at night. then the neighbor yells at me for my tree branches hanging over their yard. THAT is a hostility. (by the way, that is NOT the case. i get along just fine with my neighbors).

now if i was to invade my neighbor's home and bash the family over the head with shovels or burn their home, well i do NOT consider that a hostility. i consider that an act of terror and so much more.

David Edwards Published: Wednesday July 19, 2006
At today's White House press conference, White House spokesman Tony Snow said that the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is not a war -- after saying it was.
DAVID GREGORY: I don't think that you really answered the part about "Why is this not our war? Why is it just Israel's?"
TONY SNOW: Why would it be our war? I mean, it's not on our territory. This is a war in which the United States... It's not even a war. What you have at this point is hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. I would not characterize it as a war..........

Parents and children hear bomb explosions all night
By Kate King CNN

(CNN) -- The Esseily family was winding up a vacation in Lebanon when the airstrikes began. Nearly a week later, they're still looking for a way to get back to California.
Tony and Monika Esseily and their three children were asleep in their apartment, nearing the end of a month-long holiday, when Israel began bombing Beirut.
"It was an extreme shock when I woke up and -- actually, we heard it," Monika Esseily told CNN. "3:20 in the morning, we got up, and the whole sky was just alit. And I'm like, 'Oh no, oh no, oh no.' "
Beirut's airport was closed after Israel warplanes bombed its runways, and every night is punctuated by the sound of airstrikes. (

"I have two kids [and] a baby, and they're scared. I'm scared," Esseily said. "First time I've ever encountered something like this."........

as you can see we're really making progress

AND at the same time helping them to help themselves (helping them to blow each other up, blow up old men having tea and women running for their lives, babies clutched to their chests)! ain't we grand!!!! gives me a warm fuzzy feeling, i don't know about you

ed naha is right. the fbi is ALL over internet gambling???????? c'mon now. i guess they're taking a break from keeping tabs on the quakers. we are all over this unimportant (unimportant compared to lives being lost and bodies being maimed and babies being blown to bits, all based on lies and stupidity and vengence and goddess knows what else) stuff (don't forget getting involved in the 'roids in baseball affair too) while our country is literally flushing itself down the ter-let.

no stem cell research but money set aside to protect the

Is this the worst Congress ever? Yes, it is. Think about what both houses are doing right now. The Middle East is exploding. Afghanistan is going down the tubes. Iraq is so far down the tubes, their recently-elected government is face to face with the Tidy Bowl Man. The deficit is soaring. People are losing jobs. The stock market is plummeting. Oil is grasping at the $80 per barrel mark. Violent crime is rising across America. So, what are they doing? They're coming down hard on flag burning, gay marriage and internet gambling.Yes, they are. From the folks who gave you Terri Schiavo is alive and well, let's give more tax cuts to the rich, let's deny an increase in the minimum wage for Americans, let's ignore reality, let's condemn French Fries, comes this latest delusional foray into making law. Attack internet gambling. Oh, yeah, and pay all the members of Congress more. For doing less and less.Back in 1948, President Harry Truman not only ran against Republican Thomas Dewey but against a "do-nothing, good-for-nothing Congress."He'd be aghast at this Congress. It's not "do-nothing." It's "do-me." Republican members of congress, awash in a tidal wave of scandals, have achieved true whore status. If you pay them, they will vote. Right now? I'd rather vote for Foxy Brown.Led by the always goofier House, (headed by Dennis Hastert, whose own skin doesn't even want to be near him), these bozos are going to meet less frequently than any other Congress is history..........

who knew king george was a homeboy?

...Yo Blair, what’re you doing? Are you leaving,” Bush said......

yo yo yo my peeps, i simply couldn't resist posting this article. i wonder what king george's imaginary lil' friend jesus thinks of his FOUL language.

Bush caught on tape swearing about Syria

Microphone also picks up other comments — from Mideast to Diet Coke
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - It wasn’t meant to be overheard. Private luncheon conversations among world leaders, picked up by a microphone, provided a rare window into both banter and substance — including President Bush cursing Hezbollah’s attacks against Israel.
Bush expressed his frustration with the United Nations and his disgust with the militant Islamic group and its backers in Syria as he talked to British Prime Minister Tony Blair during the closing lunch at the Group of Eight summit.
See the irony is that what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this s--- and it’s over,” Bush told Blair as he chewed on a buttered roll.

more violence against women

last time i wrote about an issue like this, which coincidentially also happened in turkey, i got a comment asking me to stop picking on turkey. i'm NOT picking on turkey. i am shouting out AGAINST VIOLENCE ON WOMEN in ANY and ALL countries. i certainly AM speaking against a culture which condones such things as honor killings of women. worldwide, this MUST stop now and i'll never remain quiet on the subject.

How to Avoid Honor Killing in Turkey? Honor Suicide

BATMAN, Turkey (July 16) -- For Derya, a waiflike girl of 17, the order to kill herself came from an uncle and was delivered in a text message to her cellphone. “You have blackened our name,” it read. “Kill yourself and clean our shame or we will kill you first.”
Derya said her crime was to fall for a boy she had met at school last spring. She knew the risks: her aunt had been killed by her grandfather for seeing a boy. But after being cloistered and veiled for most of her life, she said, she felt free for the first time and wanted to express her independence.
When news of the love affair spread to her family, she said, her mother warned her that her father would kill her. But she refused to listen. Then came the threatening text messages, sent by her brothers and uncles, sometimes 15 a day. Derya said they were the equivalent of a death sentence............

adopt a greyhound if you can

this happened in england, but it could just have easily happened here.

if you are in the market for a dog (or a cat) try your local shelters FIRST. yup, there are even purebreds there. try the internet for rescue organizations such as
the adopt a greyhound one. try petfinders

you don't need to spend 3,000 on a dog just because they have 'papers'. what the hell difference does THAT make? rescue an animal. they will pay you back a million fold

Revealed: the man who killed 10,000 dogs

Daniel Foggo
THE secret slaughter of at least 10,000 racing greyhounds by one man has been exposed by an undercover investigation.
For the past 15 years David Smith, a builders’ merchant, has been killing healthy greyhounds no longer considered by their trainers to be fast enough to race. He buries them in a one-acre plot at the back of his home in Seaham, Co Durham.
Last week The Sunday Times covertly filmed Smith on two consecutive days receiving greyhounds from trainers before killing them with a bolt gun, dumping them in the plot and covering over the “graves” using a mechanical digger.
He told an undercover reporter it took him three years to fill the field, at which point he simply started all over again. “Within a year the bodies have gone,” said Smith. “It takes me about three years to get across there and by the time I get there I can start back here again and there are only a few bones left.”
According to Sunday Times calculations and testimony of two racing insiders, it is conservatively estimated Smith has killed at least 10,000 dogs.
The scandal, described as the “canine killing fields” by one campaigner, has shocked the government and greyhound industry, which attracts bets of £2.5 billion a year.
Ben Bradshaw, minister for animal welfare, said Smith’s business was “horrendous” and promised an inquiry into the slaughter and potential health and environmental hazard of such a large-scale dumping of dogs’ bodies. Alistair McLean, chief executive of the National Greyhound Racing Club, which governs the sport, described it as a “euthanasia factory” and promised an inquiry. “This is disgraceful. We categorically don’t endorse this kind of thing,” he said.
The RSPCA has previously expressed “grave concerns” about the fate of up to 12,000 retired greyhounds that go missing every year. A spokesman said: “There is no justification for killing these animals simply because they can’t do their job any more.”............
